IPhoto sync produces chaos

I have just updated iPhoto tov9.4 and my iPhone 3GS to iOS 6.  When I sync my photos using iTunes, it finds a lot of scans I deleted a year ago and has also scrambled the album contents.  To start with it doubled the number of photos on the phone, so I synced to an empty folder to clear the phone and rebuilt the iPhoto database. But I still get these old items on the phone.
I have restored the phone to it's as new state and then loaded apps and data from their original sources, avoiding using "Restore from Backup", since this may also contain the corrupted data.  After many hours of reconstituting the phone, I now am back to square one, with the corruption still present.
It looks like the iPhoto 9.4 library upgrade is responsible.

To answer my own question:
I eventually rebuilt the iPhoto library using the iPhoto Library Manager, File>Rebuild option.  It takes a long time but removes a lot of old stuff that must have accumulated over many years.   My iPhone photos with version 9.4 are now syncing normally.
I got this tip from Terrance Devlin, so many thanks to him:

  • Intermittent iPhoto sync problem

I've had an iPhone 4 for the past 4 months. Recently (around when I upgraded to iLife 2011), iPhoto sometimes does not "see" my iPhone. I'll plug it in, iTunes will open and start to sync, but iPhoto just sits there and the iPhone doesn't pop up in the side bar.
I've found that if I open up Image Capture and let it "scan" the iPhone for photos, iPhoto will recognize the iPhone when Image Capture finishes scanning. This takes about 5 minutes though, and is obviously just a nasty workaround.
Has anybody else experienced intermittent problems with iPhoto sync?
On topic feature request: I find that when iPhoto DOES recognize the device, the sync process is far from automated. It keeps asking me weather or not I want to import photos that have already been imported (why would I ever want to do that!?), and it then asks me if I want to delete photos from the iPhone as it imports. I think the default behavior should be like iTunes music sync. It just "updates" iPhoto with new photos, and leaves everything else alone. It would be nice to see this sync process built into iTunes so I don't have to worry about two applications syncing properly when I plug in my phone.

  • Aperture 3.1.3 and iPhoto sync problems

Upgraded to Aperture 3.1.3. Then upgraded to Lion. Tried to sync my iPhone and it got as far as photo's and got a -50 Sync error. Went to iTunes and turned off photo sync and the phone syn'd perfectly. Went back to iTunes turned photo sync back on, and got an error again. Went to iTunes turned off sync and checked the option to remove my photo's from the phone. Sync worked fine. Turned the photo sync back on, and it errored out when it was trying to reload the pictures. Turned off the Aperture photo sync and changed it to iPhoto. The next sync it reloaded my 1,500 photos without a hitch.
Bottom line: I explained all I have gone through so you can understand that it is not a corrupt photo library on the phone, and iPhoto sync'd fine, so it certainly appears that Aperture is once again the problem.

I am getting the same "Unknown error (-50)" when trying to sync photos from my Aperture 3 library now.
I did not upgrade to Lion (waiting for a 3rd party driver I need to be updated first for it), but I did update iTunes to 10.4 (80) recently and that is when I noticed the issue.
I haven't had this issue before. It syncs everything else but when iTunes goes from "Analyzing Photos" to "Optimizing Photos" in the sync process it reports that it is unable to sync because of an "unknown error (-50)"
To resolve the problem, I tried the following:
I repaired my Aperture library database (using Option+Command when launching Aperture 3).
Deleted the "iPod Photo Cache" folder inside my Aperture library. It had to resync all my photos again, this time it worked, but the next sync it had the same error again.
Updated my iOS to the latest version.
Did a Repair Disk Permissions on my Mac.
I changed USB cables and ports (using only ports directly on my Mac Pro).
Tried syncing with only iTunes running.
Doing all the above made no difference, I am still getting the error message and it won't sync new photos back to my iPhone 4 now.

  • Disable iPhoto Sync

How can the iPhoto sync be disabled. I want only to share photos through network streaming. This is not documented in Apple Support or the Apple TV manual/users guide. Somehow, I've got iPhoto in sync mode in iTunes. I want to disable this mode, then switch to streaming.

To stop the Syncing, do the following
    Go to Mac HD
    Go to Applications
    Open image capture
Next to the apple icon in the top left hand corner click on image capture
    Click on preferences
Change the top drop down box to no application

  • MobileMe-iPhoto Sync

iPhoto syncs with photos I have on MobileMe. But when it does it makes a copy of any files I have on MobileMe, and puts that file in the iPhoto Library. I don't need copies of things I put on MobileMe added to my iPhoto Library, it takes up too much space, and I often upload to MM from other means (Like photos exported from Lightroom), and I don't need copies stored in iPhoto also. Is there a way I can make it so iPhoto won't copy files from MM to itself without turning off the preference "Copy items to iPhoto Library" (assuming that would stop iPhoto from copying items from MM). I like having iPhoto copy files to itself when imported (Keeps my wife from deleting photos when she cleans up her desktop). Or, is there a way to make iPhoto not sync from MobileMe to itself at all?

I just really want to be able to allow photos to be uploaded to me somehow and have them automagically find their way back into the proper event in iPhoto.
Simply, this is not a feature at this time.

  • IPhoto sync to iPhone and iPad.  Memory difference?

I'm not sure where to post this question... I have an iPhone 4S and an iPad 2.  I sync both to iPhoto.  Both show the same number of photos.  Why do the photos take twice as much memory on the iPhone as the iPad?  Note this is after sync and again, both devices show the same number of photos and both have the same photos and videos.
    Thanks

Make sure you devices are signed into the correct iCloud account in Settings>iCloud, then check Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Default Calendar (in the Calendars section).  Here be sure you have selected the calendar under your iCloud account ID as your default.  If everything is correct and it still won't sync your calendar, go through the additional troubleshooting steps in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3999.

  • Why won't all the photos from iPhoto sync onto my iPhone 5?

I am trying to put all the photos from iPhoto on my Mac onto my iPhone 5. Through iTunes, I select sync photos with iPhoto, then sync all photos, albums, events and faces. There are 285 photos in my iPhoto library and I would like to sync them all, but after the sync when I look at the photos on my phone, only 187 synced. What am I doing wrong?

I find the easiest way to transfer photos from iphoto or your computer in general onto your iPhone is to select the ones you want and click share then either iMessage or email them to yourself, its much faster and I don't know about you but i find iTunes to be a real pain when you sync photos because it always messes up your albums on your phone!

  • IPhoto "sync" from MacBook Pro to Mac Mini

    Hello all,
Looking for some creative advice. We have a Mac Mini as a media server where the family likes to view iPhoto stuff as well use them for the screen saver. But my wife (the family iPhoto Manager) must have the iPhoto library local on her MacBook Pro (it is large and slow to load from a remote drive). I see the multitude of ways to share the files with the Mac Mini but as soon as she closes the lid on her MBP they are no longer accessible by the media server.
Any suggestions for a good simple Apple or third-party file sync utility that may work? Any other creative ideas?

There is no way to sync libraries. What you can do is mirror your wife’s Library on the Mac Mini - to do this, simply use a back up utility like DejaVu Chronosync to back your wife’s Library up to the Mini. Then share the Mini’s Library.
The advantage of this is that after the first back up, these apps will only copy the changes to the library on the Mini, and so it will be quite a fast process.

  • IPhone 4 iPhoto sync issue

Last week my camera roll synced with my iPhoto just fine. Had the iPhone 4 for only 1 and a half weeks. 1st iPhone ever but still have a second gen iPod Touch. This week none of my pictures taken from this weekend are syncing with iPhoto. Changes since last week, I took a few pictures with photo swap but I uninstalled that. I've also taken 1 screenshot but this issue started before that screenshot. I also have synced my iPod touch once or twice with the same iMac.
Everything in the camera roll but that screenshot was taken with the built in camera. I have a couple of videos in there. I've reset the phone a couple of times. I reset iSync. The other weird thing is that every time I open iPhoto it says my iPhone is connected and I can unmount it even when the iPhone is not connected. If I close iPhoto after unmounting the non-existent iPhone it is mounted again when I reopen iPhoto all without actually having my iPhone connected at any point.
Any suggestions? It's pretty unacceptable when I thought I could rely on my iPhone as a decent digital camera.

Try this:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • Delete in iPhoto - Sync iPad - why reimport?

I know the answer must be somewhere, cannot find it though. I delete pictures in iPhoto, then do a sync with my iPad. The pictures I have deleted come back on the importscreen with the question if I want to import these pictures on the iPad. No! Those are the pictures I deleted and want to have gone from the iPad as well. This could go on and on?

The system is designed so that the iPad is a slave of the Mac and iPhoto. It assumes that you will want to preserve the high quality images in iPhoto and simply use the low quality preview images on your iPad. If you don't want that don't use iPhoto.

  • Cannot delete iphoto synced photos

    Hi people,
Somehow Iphoto has synced more than 2 gigabyte worth of photos from my macbook to my iphone 3gs and there is apparently no way for me to delete them from my phone.
If i try to delete the photos i've taken with my iphone (those located in camera roll) i've only got to press the little bin. But if i try to use the same method on the iphoto imported photos (located in 3 different folders like camera roll) there is no bin.
Anybody else got this problem or got some answer?

    Thanks for the answer
But I've been looking for something like a photo tap in itunes but can't seem to find it. The top taps when selecting iphone in itunes are (my itunes is in danish, so i'm not sure what the taps are called in english mind) "overview, info, applications, ring tones, music, film, tv shows, podcasts and itunes-u.
Do you know where to find that photos tap?

  • IPhoto sync's only some pictures from iPhone

    Hi,
    I'm using iPhoto 9.6 and a iPhone 6 with 8.1.
I have about 600 pictures on my iPhone and 0 in my iPhoto library. When I connect the iPhone to the MAC, iPhoto only allows me to import 95 of the pictures.
How can I import all 600 pictures from the iPhone to iPhoto?

Have the missing photos been taken on the iPhone or have they been synced to the iPhone? If they have been synced to to iPhone using iTunes, you cannot download them using USB. Mail them to your Mac or share them to a Photo Stream. You can only download photos using a USB connection that are in the Camera Roll.

  • IPhoto sync fails

My iPad syncs with my iPhoto.    Every few days the photos are gone from my iPad.   This may be because it's full.   Whether or not it finds photos, iTunes shows my iPad to have 10.3 GB free (except when I have photos synchronized, the gray "10.3G" is just a sliver).
I go into iPhoto and delete the cache files, I switch what is supposed to Sync, and usually nothing happens to get my photos back.   So I keep up for a day or two and finally it synchronizes again, after asking me if I mind deleting the (nonexistant) photos on my iPad.
    Right now the capacity show:
    59.17 GB
    Audio 20.5 GB
    Video 4.7 GB
    Apps 23.1 GB
    Books 0.02 GB
    Other 0.67 GB
    Free 10.3 GB.
My iPad is set to sync photos from iPhoto, with All photos, albums, Events and Faces (why faces?).   No videos.
I just opened iPhoto and it is showing two, apparently empty, copies of my iPad.

There is no way to sync photo from your iPad to your Mac via iTunes.

  • HT4236 Iphoto syncing issue from Mac to gen. 1 IPAD.

I synced my photos from my iphoto on my Mac to my 1 gen. IPAD. I watched all of the photos being synced one by one. Once this was completed I tried to view my photos and there was nothing there that I had just synced. When I go to my summary page on my IPAD using ITunes, the memory was actually taken out of "other" instead of photo (the amount of memory it would have used the sync all of the photos I did). What would cause this, where can I view the photos? Has anyone else out there had this issue?
    Thanks!
    West Palm

This is a long shot but close iPhoto, go to your Pictures folder and open the iPhoto package with the Finder as shown in this screenshot
Look for a folder named iPod Photo Cache
Move it to the Trash in the Dock. That's a folder that will be recreated then next time you sync.
Launch iPhoto and try syncing the iPad again.

  • IPod/iPhoto syncing problem HELP!!

I am writing this in desperation. I tried to sync my 30GB iPhoto library onto my iPod video. iTunes started filling up my hard drive. I had 8GB of free space on my hard drive, and now I have nothing. However 25GB of my iPhoto stuff made it to the iPod. I am wondering - does syncing iPhoto with iPod make iTunes double up the iPhoto? Does it place the entire library in the iTunes folder?
If I freed up more space, and the syncing completed, would the hard drive get back to its original state?` Is iTunes just occupying the space for syncing reasons?
    Please help!! Thanks so much!!!

I am also having this problem with an 80G iPod. Anyone out there with a suggestion?
