IPhoto Thumbnail Discovery.....Now What?

I have been struggling with trying to understand why, in many of my Events, not all, the thumbnails show up with the grey exclamation mark when enlarged. After studying the iPhoto Library, I discovered that all of the Events that were producing this problem had been renamed from the default name "Roll # in the information pane (in iPhoto Application) after importing from the camera. iPhoto Library appears to create a new folder called "iPhoto Originals" where it places these events which seems to "orphan" these photos.
I rebuilt the photo library with all options including "Recover orphaned photos in the iPhoto Library folder". It asked "do you want to import orphaned photo", I said yes. All of photos in the "iPhoto Originals" folder were imported into a new default Event named by the oldest photo date. It also created a new Album called Recovered Photos.
The Events referencing the "orphaned" photos still exist with the same problem. How can I recreate the original Events with the newly imported original photos with out creating the original problem?
• Should I delete the photos from orphaned Events and then move the recovered photos into the that Event?
• Should I delete the orphaned Event entirely, create a New Event and then move the recovered photos into the that Event?
• Most importantly, how can this condition be avoided in the future. iPhoto Help suggest you can rename an event in the information pane, however, as I have discovered this appears to "orphan" the Event.
Thanks in advance for suggestions

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
As to prevention: Do you have a particular naming scheme? Does that use any ? / * type characters?

So, you have two versions of iphoto? One from the old machine and one from the new?
If so, forget about opening with the older version of iPhoto.
    For the newer version:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.

That shows you that iPhoto is working correctly and whatever issue you are having is based in your original library.

  • I had Snow Leopard and upgraded to Mavericks, and did the various up-grades.  Today when I went to open iPhoto, I got a message "iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it".  Now what?

I had Snow Leopard, and up-graded to Mavericks, and did the various up-grades in iPhoto to become compatible with
Maverick.  Today, when I tried to open iPhoto I got this message: "iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do
not have permission to make chages to it".  Now what?  I can't access my iPhoto Library.

First open the iPhoto Library package with the Finder as shown in this screenshot:'
Look for the file named iPhotoLock.data and move it to the Trash in the Dock. Launch iPhoto and see if that helped.
If not Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Deleted Image Capture and iPhoto...oops...Now What?

Hi, all. Like the title suggests, I removed Image Capture and iPhoto from my computer several months ago, thinking, "when will I ever need to hook up a digital camera?" Heh. The installer disks are with my parents several hundred miles away, and so getting them re-installed that way would be at best a hassle, plus it appears that iPhoto can't be re-installed once deleted without the original version installed to upgrade from. So, now what? Is there some place I can download Image Capture, in particular? I'm not a big user of iPhoto (hence the deletion), but getting Image Capture back would be...good. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Greg Turnipseed

Hi, Allan. The versions of iPhoto I tried to install came off the OS installer disks. I'd tried installing the version that came with 10.3 with the intent of running Software Update and pulling it up to the latest version (I still have the 10.3 disks here), but it didn't work. I also tried installing the version that came with 10.5 the last time I was at my parents', but it claimed that it couldn't find a copy of iPhoto to upgrade. I'm sure with iLife, that wouldn't be a problem, but I haven't purchased iLife.
I was afraid the only place to find Image Capture would be on the installer disk. I'll pester my parents for it the next time I'm down there.
    Thanks for your help,
    Greg

My iPhoto closed unexpectedly and now it says "Rebuilding the iPhoto Library database". What is going on and are my photos still going to be there?

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what were you doing when iPhoto closed unexpectedly?
how big is your library, i.e. how many photos?
how long has the rebuilding been going on?
do you have a recent backup of the library made just prior to this occurring?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

I got my Macbook Pro from another user (different apple id) and now i'm not able to update iPhoto and iMovie. What can i do?

You need to contact Apple and transfer that computer, the serial number, into your name and your Apple ID. Then you should be able to update the included Apple Apps from the App store. No need to Re-buy them again.
    Caveat to the above.
If your Mac did not originally come with Lion Preinstalled, early releases of early 2011 models and older, and originally had Snow Leopard installed the original owner should of supplied the Mac OS X System Discs with the system. If that person didn't you should order them from Apple at a small fee, and don't lose them.

iPhoto stores your photos in the iPhoto Library, by default it is in your Pictures folder. Double-click the iPhoto Library in "Pictures". Did you restore your documents and data, including the Pictures folder from your backup after the drive has been wiped?

Using mountain lion operating system, downoaded iphoto 9.4 update, aperature 3.4.3 update and still cannot access photo stream.  now what??

With Aperture, you should be able to use Photo Stream now, but you need iPhoto 9.4.2 > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1608
After updating iPhoto to the latest version, open System Preferences > iCloud and tick Photo Stream. Finally, you will have to turn on Photo Stream on iPhoto and Aperture choosing Photo Stream on the sidebar of both programmes
