Iphoto thumbnails are disappearing....

Some of my thumbnails have disappeared. When I click on the photo all I get is a circle with a question mark in it. Are the photos gone for good? I recently moved from a PC to a Mac and have imported most of the photos from an external hard drive. thanks for your help

Well, tried that (took over 4 hours)... about 20 pictures are missing--- from the same event. I no longer have these pictures on a photo card (and as yet have not hooked up Time Capsule as my permanent back-up). Any other thoughts as to where the missing pictures disappeared?? They are not life or death but they were there last week.

  • IPhoto thumbnails are blank, but maximized photo shows up.

I had to power of my iMac while iPhoto was uploading some photographs. When I turned it back on, iPhoto prompted me to restore the library. I said yes. Now the thumbnails aren't appearing, and when you double click a photo to maximize it, it briefly shows up with the grey yeild "!" icon and then the photo shows up, but the thumbnails are still grey. Is there a fix for this?

    Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.
2 - Run Option #2, Rebuild Thumbnails.  It could take more than one pass to get the job done.

  • IPhoto thumbnails are missing

A few hours ago I imported a new movie into iMovie. Something went wrong and now all of my iMovie thumbnails are missing from iPhoto in the event area. The only movies I see are ones I imported, nothing from iPhoto is showing anymore. When I click on the camera icon and go to the folder where my movies are in iPhoto nothing shows up. And for some reason my movie is stalling now when I play it where as before it was playing smoothly, well the movie I have so far.
I have tried to delete the iMovie cache file, it took 3 hours to rebuild my thumbnails and they were still not there. I deleted the new files I imported into iPhoto and emptied the trash. Any idea how to fix it? I don't really need all the old thumbnails back as long as I can reinsert them and it doesn't look like iMovie can see them anymore. I wouldn't even care about that if my current movie wasn't stalling, I can hear the sound but the picture pauses. Anyone?

In many cases this helps - might do so now too.

  • Using iphoto photos are disappearing

As I scroll down in photo, the image of the photo disappears.

the image of the photo disappears.
Are the thumbnails turning black? Or what do you mean exactly?
    What is your iPhoto version?
Back up your iPhoto library and try to rebuild it, see Old Toad's post:

  • My iPhoto thumbnails are trashed photos...

... and yet when opened, produce the larger version of photos - in order - not trashed at all.
Apologies if this is repeated anywhere; I'm quite ignorant and tend not to fiddle with things hidden (like directories), but I'm at a loss as to what to do.
Out of the 7000+ photos I kept on my MBP up to last week, I trashed about 4000 and this is what has happened.  Photo Browser looks fine when emailing, with everything where it should be, but iPhoto (version 8.1.2) presents the first 200-odd thumbnails as photos and movies I thought I'd gotten rid of and, when clicked upon, the photos I kept are 'underneath'.
It's time for me to clear this machine out and reload what I need, but I'm a little wary of starting this and maybe losing the vital photos.
Could anyone offer me a reason?  A solution?  (In really easy-to-follow steps?)
    Thanks,
    Louise

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails

  • IPhoto thumbnails disappear - missing photos

iPhoto crashed a few days ago, and I had to rebuild the library. After this was done, my events were all out of order but the photos were still in tact. However, there were about 100 photos in one event that were missing. They were represented by black squares. The thumbnails would show for an instant while I was scrolling through the event, but then the thumbnails would disappear and turn black. When I selected a photo, it showed a black exclamation warning sign.
I back up to Time Machine, so I tried to restore my iPhoto library from an older backup. Those same 100 photos seem to be corrupt in every single backup since the photos were taken. To make it even harder for me to understand, I actually viewed these 100 photos in iPhoto last week and they were fine, so I know they haven't been corrupt since they were imported to iPhoto.
    Are these photos recoverable?

The exclamation mark is an indication that the link/file path between the thumbnail and the master photo has been broken. Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
    2 - apply Option #4, Rebuild Database.

  • Iphoto thumbnails disappear with each reboot

My iPhoto thumbnails disappear any time I reboot or log out of iPhoto.
I use the rebuild command and get them back, but they don't  stay.
Is this a problem with iPhoto or the address where the thumbnails are stored?

My iPhoto library is in the correct location on my laptop hard drive.
This all started with editing photos.
I backed up to time machine, then deleted @350 photos from a recent download.
iPhoto froze up with this, and I did a force quit.
Re opening iPhoto came back with all black thumbnails.
I option-command opened iPhoto and rebuilt the data, and the thumbnails.
The photos are there, but every time I log out of iPhoto, the thumbnails are gone again, and I have to rebuild.
So...  I restored from a journaled copy of iPhoto photos, from time machine.  The problem persisted.
To restore however I had to move my iPhoto library (30 Gigs)  to an external hard drive because I did not have enough
room on my hard drive to restore from time machine.
The data is all there, but the thumbnails just won't  persist.
    I think it is haunted.
    thanks

  • When I upgraded my iPhoto thumbnails, my photos disappeared.  How can I recover them?  I have iPhoto '08.

When I upgraded my iPhoto thumbnails, my photos disappeared.  How do I recover them?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 10 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

Could someone help me restore my photos?  I was trying to "restore my database" in iPhoto when it shut down - now my thumbnails are distorted, logged under a new name, and when you click on a thumbnail it opens as another photo.  I was following another "helpful hint" hold down the option and command key and restart iPhoto - select the top three and you should be able to get rid of the dreaded exclamation point.  My MAC ran through the first two options dealing with thumbnails, but crashed during the "restore database"  step and now I have a mess.  Help, please.  Thank you.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Apple does not allow this.  So somehow, you have used some non-allowed process.
I assume you mean "some older version" of iOS.

  • Lion iPhotos are black - thumbnails are fine

    Hi
I bought a MacBook Pro two days ago. I transferred material from my MacBook running Snow Leopard. Then I installed Lion on the new MB Pro.
When I started up iPhoto the first time, Lion ran a translator program so the pics I'd transferred over via Migration Assistant would work with Lion. Now, the thumbnails are fine but most of the pictures are all black -- or blank -- when you click the thumbnails.
Any help on this would be appreciated.

Closing the lid all the way on a Macbook or Macbook Pro puts the computer tp sleep.
    Hope this helps

  • I upgraded from iPhoto to Photo and my pictures are disappeared ?

I upgraded from iPhoto to Photo and my pictures are disappeared - why ?

My question was so long, so I narrowed it down
I can't open my photos via Photos, and I made sure that they are on my Capsule - so I (think) I have them. But I can't import them to Photo.
How do I open iphoto Library with Photos?

  • Missing iPhoto Thumbnail Images in iMovie Project Library

    Okay, here goes...
I'd created a short movie and have it in iMovie's project library. The movie included video footage from a dv camera as well as video from my digital photo camera. I recently reorganized and merged several events folders in iPhoto from my vacation, which included parts of the video used in the iMovie short movie project. Now, when I select the project in iMovie, some of the thumbnails are missing from the video sequence to the right of the project name.
It still plays (thankfully), but it's irritating me that I cannot figure out why the thumbnails have disappeared.
Does it have something to do with merging iPhoto files? If so, or even if not, how do I fix this and have the thumbnails reappear?

Something similar is happening to me. I created a project a couple of months ago in iMovie '08, and now the "upper window" thumbnails are showing with an exclamation mark - but just the video clips! The photos are still there. You can see the thumbnail with the exclamation mark and when you drag the cursor through it to see it play, it only does in the little damaged thumbnail but not in the screen. After touching it, it becomes black. It does not play at all when the project is played completely. I someone finds out how to solve this, please advise.
    Thanks so much.
