Iphoto thumbnails disappear with each reboot

My iPhoto thumbnails disappear any time I reboot or log out of iPhoto.
I use the rebuild command and get them back, but they don't  stay.
Is this a problem with iPhoto or the address where the thumbnails are stored?

My iPhoto library is in the correct location on my laptop hard drive.
This all started with editing photos.
I backed up to time machine, then deleted @350 photos from a recent download.
iPhoto froze up with this, and I did a force quit.
Re opening iPhoto came back with all black thumbnails.
I option-command opened iPhoto and rebuilt the data, and the thumbnails.
The photos are there, but every time I log out of iPhoto, the thumbnails are gone again, and I have to rebuild.
So...  I restored from a journaled copy of iPhoto photos, from time machine.  The problem persisted.
To restore however I had to move my iPhoto library (30 Gigs)  to an external hard drive because I did not have enough
room on my hard drive to restore from time machine.
The data is all there, but the thumbnails just won't  persist.
I think it is haunted.
thanks

  • IPhoto thumbnails disappear - missing photos

iPhoto crashed a few days ago, and I had to rebuild the library. After this was done, my events were all out of order but the photos were still in tact. However, there were about 100 photos in one event that were missing. They were represented by black squares. The thumbnails would show for an instant while I was scrolling through the event, but then the thumbnails would disappear and turn black. When I selected a photo, it showed a black exclamation warning sign.
I back up to Time Machine, so I tried to restore my iPhoto library from an older backup. Those same 100 photos seem to be corrupt in every single backup since the photos were taken. To make it even harder for me to understand, I actually viewed these 100 photos in iPhoto last week and they were fine, so I know they haven't been corrupt since they were imported to iPhoto.
    Are these photos recoverable?

The exclamation mark is an indication that the link/file path between the thumbnail and the master photo has been broken. Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
    2 - apply Option #4, Rebuild Database.

  • Tracker Icon Disappears with PC Reboot

    Hello All,
I am preparing to roll out Shared Review for technical documentation at our company. I have done a number of test cases successfully with some users.
I am using Acrobat 9 Pro Extended to initiate the shared reviews.
Users have Reader 8 or above which seems to work fine EXCEPT:
One case is stumping me where a user keeps losing his Tracker Icon from the system tray when he reboots. (It is really convenient to access your reviews from via the Tracker Icon without having to navigate to your review PDF copy so I am trying to fix this:
This user has Acrobat 7 and Reader 9 on his PC
He had to set reader as his default client because when he received an invitation to join a test Shared Review, the browser tried to open it in Acrobat 7 and would not work - Adobe says you have to have Acrobat 8 or Reader 8 or above for Shared Review.
So after setting default to open with Reader, he was able to join the review. So far so good.
The tracker Icon appeared in the system tray. Still OK
He saved the browser copy to a working drive.
He opened the review copy from his working drive. He is connected to the review. All is fine.
When he shuts down his laptop and then reboots later, the Tracker icon has disappeared.
I know he can get to Tracker by opening Reader and clicking View | Tracker...However, for this rollout to be successful I would like to solve this problem so he can access Tracker from his system tray.
I have a feeling that having Acrobat 7 on his machine is causing a problem. I tried a human at Adobe Support specific to Acrobat - they won't help unless I own the latest version of Acrobat.
    Any ideas out there?
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Hello George,
Thanks for your response. Yeah I have a feeling that he will have to either use the workaround or upgrade his Acrobat program. I'll wait for a bit to see if anyone else in the forum chimes in on this.
    Thanks.

  • Lsdaq reporting name changes with each reboot on OS X Tiger

I am using the PCI-6713 and PCI-6251, and I have recently ported a
DAQmx program on Windows to a DAQmx Base program on Mac OSX Tiger.
The problem that is killing me is that on reboot the the cards
change their device names on reboot.  For example, sometimes when
I reboot the computer 6713 is Dev1 and 6251 is Dev2 but other times
6251 is Dev1 and 6713 os Dev2.  Has anyone else experienced this
problem?  Can it be fixed or is it something I have to work around?
    Brandon

    Brandon,
    Thanks for contacting National Instruments.
I was not able to replicate this issue on a MAC OSX Tiger. I installed the PCI-6713 and PCI-6251 on the MAC and rebooted it a number of time. The device name stayed the same for the two boards. The driver that I was running on was DAQmx Base 1.5.
What version of the DAQmx Base driver are you running? Do you see the same issue on another MAC system? Are there other boards on the remaining PCI slots and are they being removed at any time?

  • Losing two settings from UltraNav with each reboot

Every time my X220 reboots, I lose settings for Momentum/glide and Slow Motion (they become unchecked). Sleep and hibernation do not affect settings, only reboot. Driver used is 16.2.14.0.
    Anyone else have this issue?
    Solved!

I am not sure the cause of this problem, and I cannot reproduce it here, but could you please check to see if you have software called "RapidBoot Shield" installed on your system, and if so, uninstall it?  It could potentially cause this type of problem.

  • Updating Thumbnails... each time I open iPhoto

    Hello-
Every time I open iPhoto, it updates the thumbnails. I have tried the following to no avail:
    1) Remove the iPhoto preferences from home/library/preferences,
    2) Remove the iPhoto cache from home/library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto
    3) Rebuild the Thumbnails (command-option while opening iPhoto)
    4) Repair permissions (command-option while opening iPhoto)
    5) Repair database (command-option while opening iPhoto)
Please let me know if you have encountered this and what you did to fix it. Thank you.

I'm experiencing the same issue with iPhoto 9.3.  I rebuild the library using each of the four option (only one can be used at a time with iPhoto 9.3)
with no success.  It was the only library of my 15 libraries that exhibited this issue.  Lastly I rebuild the library with iPhoto Library Manager and iPLM crashed.  Evidently that one library is damaged in such amanner that It can't be rebuilt by iPLM nor merged into an new library. iPLM crashes with the following mesage:
This is the console message I get each time iPLM fails to merge the library:
    06/15/12 4:42:25.950 PM iPhoto Library Manager: *** Assertion failure in -[AUAppleEvent sendWithMode:timeout:], /Volumes/Ratbert/Users/bwebster/Projects/UberProject/CarbonUtils/AUAppleEvent.m :372
06/15/12 4:42:34.153 PM Console: ISGetIconFamilyFromStorage: seed mismatch for 2c510003, actual seed is 625558ec
I have no idea what it means.  I imported the Masters folder from the problem library into a new library.  There were 15 files that could not be imported although they were formats that iPhoto does recognize, jpg, psd and CR2.
    Go figure.

  • Before I downloaded Lion every time I would upload a pic from iphoto there would be two files.  One that was 1.8MB and another that was 50KB.  Now I can only find the 1.8MB one.  Did this option disappear with Lion?

Before I downloaded Lion every time I would upload a pic from iphoto there would be two files.  One that was 1.8MB and another that was 50KB.  Now I can only find the 1.8MB one.  Did this option disappear with Lion?  I really need this option!

Sorry but this is not clear.
    When you would "import" what?
two files would show up in "images".
Do you mean in the All Images search in the Finder?
    IF so:
1.Never interact with photos that are in iPhoto via the All Images Search. This does not understand the iPhoto Library and it's very, very easy to damage the library this way.
    2. What you were seeing was the original file you imported and the thumbnail created by iPhoto for viewing on the iPhoto Window. That thumbnail is not designed for user access.
What are you trying to do ultimately?

  • When I upgraded my iPhoto thumbnails, my photos disappeared.  How can I recover them?  I have iPhoto '08.

When I upgraded my iPhoto thumbnails, my photos disappeared.  How do I recover them?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 10 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

What format are they? Tiif? Jpeg? You can compress them with a lot of apps - including Preivew and just about any graphics editor out there. I'm not sure that 45mb would crash iPhoto thogh, are yo sure that's the cause? I know that some folks have mentioned pixel dimensions causing issues, as can color profiles.

  • IPhoto: strange behaviour with preview thumbnails

Is there a simple way in iPhoto 8 to rebuild the thumbnail database?
I recently noticed a strange behaviour iPhoto 8 has with previews: In some of my event categories, iPhoto does not display the correct preview thumbnail of the picture, but a preview thumbnail of another event. When I click on the thumbnail, it reloads the appropriate preview and it does not happen again - with that picture. Also, if I double click an event to open it, the small thumbnail of the event's key photo that is to be displayed in the title bar (next to the All Events button) is not always correct.
    Thank you for your help!
    Stefan

I have similar problems (lately) with iPhoto 6.0.6 -- thumbnails do not equal the images they 'thumbnail' of.
Sometimes when it opens, it (recently) asked me to rebuild the thumbnails, but not always.
Can I force a thumbnail rebuild using the command you gave - Apple-option while opening iPhoto? In iPhoto 6.0.6 this primarily forces a new selection of a library.

  • My desktop photo disappears when I reboot iMac, replaced with Mac default image. please help?

My desktop photo disappears when I reboot iMac...replaced with default apple image. does anyone know a fix?

First, try to delete the Desktop settings file. First, open Finder, select Go menu > Go to Folder, and type ~/Library/Preferences. Then, delete "com.apple.desktop.plist" and "com.apple.systempreferences.plist", and restart your computer. Finally, change the wallpaper and see if it stays after restarting your computer
If that does not work try
open the Applications Support folder and then look for the Dock folder and open that. There are two files, one of which is "desktoppicture.db". Move this file to the trash and securely delete it. Restart the computer. A new "desltoppicture.db" will be created on startup.
Finally, reset your desktop picture again using System Preferences.

  • IPhoto6 - after a full reistall of Snow Leopard, iphoto does not display thumbnails. I've restored from time machine, rebuilt the library and run through the rebuild thumbnails function with no success. The files are there, I just get a dotted outline.

iPhoto6 on iMac running SL - after a full reistall of Snow Leopard, iphoto does not display thumbnails. I've restored the library from time machine, rebuilt the library from iPhoto and run through the rebuild thumbnails function with no success. The files are there, I just get a dotted outline instead of the thumbnails. Does anyone have any other ideas on how to restore the thumbnails?

    Try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • When I email from iPhoto, separate emails with a photo on each, the email received on an iPad  shows the first picture opened is shown in all the other emails.

When I email from iPhoto separate emails with a different photo on each, the email on my iPad opens each photo attachment as the same photo sent on the first email.  This only happens when I use iPhoto to email.  My daugther was sending pictures this way and at first it worked but now it does this same thing.  Any suggestions?

First try this:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and do the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Second, if the above fails  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos and check to see if the problem persists.

  • My iphoto has disappeared and photo library

I have been looking at similiar problems but nothing seems to be exactly like my problem.  My iphoto has disappeared from my doc.  There is no "iphoto" in the applications.  When i go to my iphoto library I get this message. "There is no application set to open the document "iphoto Library".  I do not have back-up for photos.  I do not want to lose them if at all possible.  I do have my start up disks for my computer.
    HELP!

Well put in the applications install Disc.   Received this message:
"The installation failed."  An unkown installation error occurred.
The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail.
Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.
I tried this several time and have come up with the same message each time.!

  • Thumbnails disappeared

I've spent the day collecting all my photo folders and importing the images to iPhoto albums. After each transfer I checked and found all thumbnails. Now a couple of hours later I find that a number of my albums show blank icons for each thumbnail image. Iphoto indicates the correct number of images, and the iphoto library contains all the images. However, despite my rebuilding the thumbnails (AplAltiphoto app) I still cannot get the thumbnails to appear. I've read many of the postings on this problem, tried all the suggestions but none works.
    Any further recommendations?

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
