Iphoto thumbnails rotation

Ever since I have updated iphoto a  number of my thumbnails are rotated in the incorrect orientation.
I do find iphoto very slow and processor intensive.  What the **** is it doing in the background.
How do I turn off faces??

You can't turn off Faces.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Iphoto thumbnails

iphoto thumbnails all the same...click on thumbnail...see a photo not same image as thumb...and upside down. I want to delete every picture and restart...how?

Better to just fix the thumbnails, no?
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. It can take 3 or 4 goes for this to work

  • Iphoto thumbnails disappear with each reboot

My iPhoto thumbnails disappear any time I reboot or log out of iPhoto.
I use the rebuild command and get them back, but they don't  stay.
Is this a problem with iPhoto or the address where the thumbnails are stored?

My iPhoto library is in the correct location on my laptop hard drive.
This all started with editing photos.
I backed up to time machine, then deleted @350 photos from a recent download.
iPhoto froze up with this, and I did a force quit.
Re opening iPhoto came back with all black thumbnails.
I option-command opened iPhoto and rebuilt the data, and the thumbnails.
The photos are there, but every time I log out of iPhoto, the thumbnails are gone again, and I have to rebuild.
So...  I restored from a journaled copy of iPhoto photos, from time machine.  The problem persisted.
To restore however I had to move my iPhoto library (30 Gigs)  to an external hard drive because I did not have enough
room on my hard drive to restore from time machine.
The data is all there, but the thumbnails just won't  persist.
    I think it is haunted.
    thanks

  • No thumbnail rotation in Bridge CS4 under Win7/64bit

Bridge CS4 was working fine under Vista 64bit.  After updating to Windows 7 64bit thumbnail rotation does not work (neither using [] shortcuts, nor the tolbar arrows).  My computer has a GeForce 8600GT, to date in terms of updates.  I tried resetting the preferences, purging the cache etc to no avail.  Any suggestions?
    TIA

Memory can also mean inadequate page file, memory problems, or cache.  Also, since it is a new computer don't rule out defective RAM.

  • No audio on iPhoto thumbnails in browser

    Help!
None of my iPhoto thumbnail clips are playing audio in the browser. But if I drag them into the project timeline, they DO play audio. What am I missing?
They USED to play audio in the browser...now nothing!

Yes, I have had the same problem for weeks now. I tried the last suggestion on this now archived thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10875206&#10875206) which I thought was the best answer yet, but deleting the .plist for Imovie and then repairing permissions didn't work. I have seen another listing indicating that if you have "too many" movies on your hard drive (and thence your event library), your imovie can't handle it. (this individual said that he deleted some videos and it worked fine again-- he could again hear sound in his event browser). But then why does apple sell me a product that doesn't work with the few videos (less than 50GB) that I have in this huge1TB drive iMac they also just sold me? Long and the short of it, I can't find any guidance on how large is "too large" of a video library for Imovie's event browser to handle, assuming that is the problem. I too would welcome any additional guidance on how to solve this very annoying problem.

  • When I upgraded my iPhoto thumbnails, my photos disappeared.  How can I recover them?  I have iPhoto '08.

When I upgraded my iPhoto thumbnails, my photos disappeared.  How do I recover them?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 10 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • IMovie '08 crashes on iPhoto thumbnail creation (at launch)

ok, I've finally figured out that if I say No to creating thumbnails from iPhoto at launch, iMovie will open okay. But, presuming I want them, any time I launch and say Yes it freezes and than crashes. And I see no way to manually generate them after iMovie opens. Help!

There are several threads in this forum about the iPhoto thumbnail creation bug in iMovie 7.1. The only way around this so far is to put all your iPhoto video clips into the iPhoto trash (but not empty the trash). Then add a few back at a time, launching iMovie after each addition. This "small bites" approach allows iMovie to create the thumbnails without choking/crashing.
Unfortunately, this workaround isn't feasible for those of us with large video collections in our iPhoto library.

  • Iphoto 11 rotation issue.. Please Help..

I'm having an issue with iphoto with the way it's displaying images. For some reason when I view the contents of an event it will rotate and stretch images randomly even when the thumbnails are displayed the correct way round. There seems to be no reason why this is happening,
I have been through all the rebuild options in iphoto and have rebuilt the library using iphoto library manager but it's still happening.
Sometimes when I launch iphoto it isn't an issue straight away, I have to look through several events before it starts rotating images...

One the chance that it might be a preference file in your account that is the culprit first start with this:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If that doesn't do the job it could be a preference file other than iPhoto's.  Here's how to test that:
    Trouble Shooting Preferences
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
    1 - close all applications.
2 - open your Home/Library folder and Option-drag (copy) the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
3 - select the contents of your Home/Library/Preferences folder and drag them into the Trash bin in the Dock.  You will be asked to provide your Admin password.
    4 - reboot.
5 - run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed
6 - If the problem is fixed:
    A - open the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.
B - Open the Preferences  folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace or Skip button.
    D - reboot.
7 - If the problem is NOT fixed, drag the contents of the Preference folder on the Desktop into the Home/Library/Preference folder and replace the entire contents that were created by clicking on Replace.
    8 - reboot.

  • IPhoto has rotated and distorted a lot of my old photos

Something strange has happened to some of my older photos. The photos are in portrait orientation, like they're supposed to, but the image itself is rotated and stretched (as you can see in the image). After looking at the distorted image in full screen, the thumbnail is also distorted. Rebuilding the library didn't fix the problem. Is there a way to fix this?

    First, try this:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder:
    User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.
If this doesn't help give this a try:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
If all photos appear normal in this new library we know it's not damaged image files and that the problem lies with your existing library.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • How does iPhoto handle rotating images? 'Revert to Original' Issue

I use iPhoto for all my images, and need to get my head around how it stores images, particularly when edited. If I rotate a photo, for example from horizontal to landscape, then I think it stores the old version, and the new version. I can use the menu to 'Revert to Original' - which shows the unrotated image.
According to iPhoto, my library size is 24.8gb.
According to Finder, the library size is 34.2gb
I would like to reclaim this nearly 10gb back, as if I have rotated a photo, I do not need the original version! It would also be nice to change the iPhoto behaviour, so when you rotate an image, it does not create a new file.
I have heard of iPhoto diet, but that does not work reliably for newer versions.
I use iPhoto 7.1.4 (the latest) and any help or advice would be appreciated.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The best way to do what you want for future photos is to upload the photos from the camera to a folder on the desktop, rotate the file there before importing into iPhoto. There are 3rd party applications that can losslessly rotate image files. Also do not turn on the Auto-Rotate feature of your camera if it has one.
For those that are already in the library the only way to do what you want is to replace the original file with a copy of the edited file inside the library package and then do a revert to original on that file.
To facilitate replacing the original files with a copy of the edited (modified) files put all of the files you want to replace into one Event. That will put them all in one folder within the Originals folder and Modified folder. Then copy the contents of the Modified subfolder into the corresponding Originals subfolder.
You run a big risk of damaging the library if an error is made during the process. It's really not recommended. In other words *proceed at your own risk and make a backup of the library before proceeding*.
The reason the finder reports a larger library is that it is reporting the original, thumbnail and modified files as well as the database, cache and data files.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Iphoto thumbnails ok but have triangle with an exclamation mark when I click on the thumbnail so can't view it as a bigger picture.

In my iPhoto the thumbnails are all present but when I click on them the bigger picture is not visible and I can see a triangle with an exclamation mark in it. Has anyone got any suggestions?

That means iPhoto has lost the link to the original file.
    What version of iPhoto?
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
(A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.)
Have you used any apps to "clean" or "tune up" your Mac recently?
Have you deleted any images from 'All My Files' or 'All My Photos'?

  • IMovie '11 freezes while trying to generate iPhoto thumbnails

So I need to move videos from iPhoto to iMovie '11. iMovie said I had to generate thumbnails before I could do that so I pressed ok. The pop-up window shows "generating thumbnails Processing Event: iPhoto Videos Time Remaning: " the window said it would take a few minutes, but after two hours, there has been no progress made (at all) in the progress bar and there isn't even a number after time remaining. I've been trying to look up answers but no luck. It's like the application has frozen, but I don't get the spinning rainbow and the force quit pop-up doesn't indicate that there are any problems. I've already tried updating, force quitting(that is the only way I can quit), deleting com.apple.iMovie.plist and relaunching the program, shutting down my computer, and now I'm out of ideas. Anyone have any more trouble shooting tips?

    Hi
iMovie is an Non Destructive Video Editing application - and works like this
as an example: in Project's there are NO movie at all - just a text document pointing to where video, photos and Audio is stored and HowTo play it (parts of it) into the Movie You are making.
So if raw material is moved or if Library documents got corrupted - iMovie get's lost and can't save it self.
MY GUESS - is that iPhoto Library file got mixed up one way or another. So by forcing iPhoto to sort this out - usually helps. And You do this by (TAKES LOT'S of time - 6 to 12 hours most common to me)
    • Close all programs - and Mac till Turned OFF
    • Connect Mac to Mains/Mains adaptor (AS THIS TAKES TIME)
    • Start up Mac
    • Start iPhoto - BUT KEEP - alt- and cmd-keys down during full up-start.
    • SELECT All Options
    • Let Your Mac be - till done - NO surfing or any other background processes
    When done
    • Start iMovie and see if it now finds all parts.

  • I lost all my photos in iPhoto after I updated the iPhoto thumbnails.  How do I get my pictures back?

After I updated the thumbnails, my iPhoto could not even open, but when I did, all my photos were gone.  Is there a way to recover those photos that I lost?

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto Thumbnails and Photos Not Displaying After Restore

    Hi,
I recently reset my iMac to overcome an indexing problem.  I backed up my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and once the Mac was rebuilt I copied the iPhoto file back across from the backup to the iMac.
When I ran iPhoto and selected the iPhoto library to use, I get the Events thumbnails grid but there is no content other than the name of the event.
If I click on an Event I then get:
Clicking on a photo gives me:
I tried copying and importing the iPhoto file again, but the same thing happens.
I can see by inspecting the Media folder under the Import to Library option that all the photos are there.
I've tried rebuilding and repairing the iPhoto database by holding down Option/CMD when opening iPhoto and selecting options 3, 4, 1 and 2 in that order but still hasn't helped.
Anyone know why they're not displaying?
Thankfully, when I backed up the iPhoto library I also "exported" all the photos as individuals to my Cloud storage, so I also have another backup - but I'd rather not use this second backup if possible as I want to keep my Events as per the main backup.
I also have a 3rd backup (yes, I'm paranoid about my photos!) on Time Machine (didn't use that for the restore as I was told it would re-introduce the indexing errors).
    Thanks in advance.

I'm guessing this is as it should be?
That looks good, your original image files are still in the iPhoto Library but need reconnecting.
I've tried rebuilding and repairing the iPhoto database by holding down Option/CMD when opening iPhoto and selecting options 3, 4, 1 and 2 in that order but still hasn't helped.
Then try the last resort and rebuild with iPhoto Library Manager.  You can download it here, the free trial will suffice for this:  Fat Cat Software – iPhoto Library Manager
