Iphoto - thumbnails wrong

Hello,
I recently reinstalled my system fresh and ending up exctracting master copies of my old iphoto library (show package contents > masters). I imported all of those pictures into the new iphoto via file import. This was just fine (it took awhile but it worked. I haven't been able to verify with ALL of my pics survived the jump). Anyway my question or problem is when looking through the pictures (under "photos" on the left side bar). Most of the pictures work, but there seems to be like blasts of pictures that have a preview of 1 pic or several (extracted from a specific event) and then once opened displays an entirely different event. I'm not sure if there is a way to fix a problem such as this.
I did some reasearch on here and there was a similiar problem not the same I believe. ikarus84 mentioned a solution to that problem not sure if this will work for me, or if this was out of context.
"Finally I found the solution myself.
I tried first to fix it with the iPhoto Library Manager, but it hang up after hours of work because after restarting iPhoto to change the iPhoto Library, iPhoto tried to rebuild the thumbnails cache, which took again hours and ended every time in a hang up.
The solution is:
1. I deleted the files:
Thumb64Segment.data,
ThumbJPGSegment.data and
the folder "Thumbnails"
2. Then I used CMD-ALT during start of iPhoto to use the options:
Rebuild the photos small thumbnails
Rebuild all of the photo thumbnails

any help will be apprciated.
Thanks.

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. It can take 3 or 4 goes for this to work

  • Iphoto thumbnails disappear with each reboot

My iPhoto thumbnails disappear any time I reboot or log out of iPhoto.
I use the rebuild command and get them back, but they don't  stay.
Is this a problem with iPhoto or the address where the thumbnails are stored?

My iPhoto library is in the correct location on my laptop hard drive.
This all started with editing photos.
I backed up to time machine, then deleted @350 photos from a recent download.
iPhoto froze up with this, and I did a force quit.
Re opening iPhoto came back with all black thumbnails.
I option-command opened iPhoto and rebuilt the data, and the thumbnails.
The photos are there, but every time I log out of iPhoto, the thumbnails are gone again, and I have to rebuild.
So...  I restored from a journaled copy of iPhoto photos, from time machine.  The problem persisted.
To restore however I had to move my iPhoto library (30 Gigs)  to an external hard drive because I did not have enough
room on my hard drive to restore from time machine.
The data is all there, but the thumbnails just won't  persist.
    I think it is haunted.

  • No audio on iPhoto thumbnails in browser

    Help!
None of my iPhoto thumbnail clips are playing audio in the browser. But if I drag them into the project timeline, they DO play audio. What am I missing?
They USED to play audio in the browser...now nothing!

Yes, I have had the same problem for weeks now. I tried the last suggestion on this now archived thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10875206&#10875206) which I thought was the best answer yet, but deleting the .plist for Imovie and then repairing permissions didn't work. I have seen another listing indicating that if you have "too many" movies on your hard drive (and thence your event library), your imovie can't handle it. (this individual said that he deleted some videos and it worked fine again-- he could again hear sound in his event browser). But then why does apple sell me a product that doesn't work with the few videos (less than 50GB) that I have in this huge1TB drive iMac they also just sold me? Long and the short of it, I can't find any guidance on how large is "too large" of a video library for Imovie's event browser to handle, assuming that is the problem. I too would welcome any additional guidance on how to solve this very annoying problem.

  • When I upgraded my iPhoto thumbnails, my photos disappeared.  How can I recover them?  I have iPhoto '08.

When I upgraded my iPhoto thumbnails, my photos disappeared.  How do I recover them?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 10 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • IMovie '08 crashes on iPhoto thumbnail creation (at launch)

ok, I've finally figured out that if I say No to creating thumbnails from iPhoto at launch, iMovie will open okay. But, presuming I want them, any time I launch and say Yes it freezes and than crashes. And I see no way to manually generate them after iMovie opens. Help!

There are several threads in this forum about the iPhoto thumbnail creation bug in iMovie 7.1. The only way around this so far is to put all your iPhoto video clips into the iPhoto trash (but not empty the trash). Then add a few back at a time, launching iMovie after each addition. This "small bites" approach allows iMovie to create the thumbnails without choking/crashing.
Unfortunately, this workaround isn't feasible for those of us with large video collections in our iPhoto library.

  • Does anyone elses iphoto thumbnails show the wrong photos in album ?

This is a relatively new problem i am having.... when i open an album and the zoom is over c.20% or you change the zoom the thumbnails show the wrong photo. when you open to edit, the correct photo opens. This is veeeerrrry annoying. can anyone shed any light on this ?

    Hi slipstream1,
I don't know why that started happening for you.
    Try this:
    Close iPhoto
Navigate to where you have the iPhoto Library on your hard drive
Drag the three thumbnail files found loose in the root of the Library folder to the desktop
Hold down the Command and Option keys while launching iPhoto until you get the rebuild window
Choose the options to rebuild the thumbnails
Hopefully this will fix it for you.

  • Serious iPhoto thumbnails

    Hello!
I am getting quite worried about my iPhoto 9 library. A few days ago my iMac - unusually - locked up while iPhoto was open (I'd had an extremely rare kernel panic earlier in the day) and I was forced to do a hard reboot. Ever since then, iPhoto has failed to display thumbnails for (apparently any) photos: they either appear as blank grey boxes or as pixellated repetitons of one single, seeming random photo. However, when these thumbnail fails are clicked, the actual photo opens, so these all appear to be present and correct (thankfully!). I tried opening iPhoto with cmd-alt held to rebuild the thumbnail cache, but this did not work: the restore process quit before completion. I then tried restoring iPhoto from my Time Machine backup but this also - initially - to restore the thumbnails, until I tried to quit the app. This launched a lengthy thumbnail restore process, which initially appeared to have worked. However, on examining things, I found that some grey blank boxes were still present, which when clicked on produced a triangle error, and other thumbnails were the wrong way round. So I trashed this version of the library, and went back to the original pre-restore version (which I'd kept), and had another go at rebuilding the thumbnail cache using cmd-r. After the progress bar had chugged promisingly away for more than an hour, I was suddenly presented with a lengthy succession of 'such & such a photo not present' errors, each offering only 'cancel' and 'find photo' options. Not having any real idea which photos were in dispute I clicked cancel on each, thinking I would sort it out later. However, after the 20th or so error, and fearing the process might continue for hours, I force quit iPhoto in disgust.
The question is: what do I do know? I have run Disk Utility but it claims my HD is "okay" and fails to find any errors. I suppose one obvious next step would be restoring to an earlier point using Time Machine, but I am lacking in enthusiasm after what happened last time...
    Any insights greatly appreciated!

So if I restore to a sufficiently early date with Time Machine I should be able to fix this issue and be presented with a fully thumbnailed up library?
In theory, yes. However, I wouldn't worry about the thumbnails, they can be rebuilt. It's the ! that would worry me.
I find myself also wondering why, if the database is corrupt, it is not responding to the cmd-r repair routines within iPhoto?
Because it's too bunged up for the tools available. At that point my suggestion is
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto thumbnail corruption

I’ve got a few problems with iPhoto database corruption. I’m using the latest version.
    1. The thumbnail jpegs in the /data folder have gotten corrupted and some of the links to the originals are not intact. The roll numbers have also disappeared.
    2. When I get the prompt that “the file can’t be found, would I like to find it” I find it, but can’t select it because the filename is grayed out in Finder. Why won’t iPhoto or Finder let me select the file? The file exists and I can look at it in Preview, Photoshop, etc., so I know it’s intact and not corrupted.
    3. I’ve rebuilt the database, thumbnails, etc. a couple of times and still get thumbnail corruption (wrong image in the thumbnail–not the same as the actual jpeg). Is the only way to fix this to copy the actual image somewhere else, delete it in iPhoto and quit iPhoto and then import it back again to let iPhoto re-create the data and thumbnails and links?
As a side point, why does the program name the thumbnail the same as the actual file? Doesn’t having duplicate file names which are actually different files on the system seem like it could lead to problems?

    June:
Once you get back up and running with a viable library check out the tip at the end of my signature. It can provide an easy recovery to this type of database corruption.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Importing into iPhoto - thumbnails but no full-size pics

I'm setting up a new iMac with OS X Lion (10.7.2) and iPhoto '11 (9.1.5).
I've Imported to Library over 1,000 photos from iPhoto '08 (7.1.5) from the originals folder. They show up fine and I can see them as Events (after autosplitting) and Photos but when 1 choose one and click on it, I see a black screen. At the top is the date taken (top left) and on the right 6 of 6 (for example) showing how many are in the event. At the bottom are the thumbnails. When I show information, I can see how it was captured, the pixels and the file size plus a photo number and a date.  When I resize with the zoom bottom left , I can see a thumbnail of what is happening but no full siz photos.
Can anyone suggest what is wrong or what I am doing wrong?
Thanks in advance for the help you may be able to offer.
    John

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'

  • Iphoto thumbnails open blank with second user

We have a two user macbook pro. When we load new photos onto iphoto on one 'side' the photos load fine and can be seen by that user. When we switch sides to the other user the thumbnails are there but they open blank. This seems to be a new problem. The thumbnails always open fine with the user that loads the photos, but not with the other user.
Both users are using the same iphoto library.
Any ideas, do I have a setting wrong somewhere ????

    Thanks Terence,
I have found by right clicking on the photos the problem is permissions. If I rebuild as you say I think it will temporarily fix the problem as I have done this before and it does. As it starts to rebuild it asks to fix the permissions and voila its fixed though it does go through the process. My problem is that I need to rebuild every time I upload photos.
When one user uploads the photos it seems to create a folder in the iphoto library but the permissions within that particular date folder are allocated to that user rather than all users. I have the library in the shared user account and the permissions I have set for the iphoto library as everyone read write access. How do I get it to upload and give permission to all users when it does. Is there a setting somewhere?
    Thanks

  • IPhoto thumbnails inaccurate

Please help, sorry if this has been asked but did a search and a few troubleshooting steps listed but still having the issue.
iPhoto 6 working for about 2 months since I got the imac, but now when I view my photos it is showing the wrong picture on the thumbnail for at least 50 of the photos. When I open that thumbnail it shows the correct picture. Know this because the thumbnail is a picture from 3 years ago and the picture was taken last month.
    Troubleshooting steps:
    1. Clicked rebuild but did not fix
    2. Updated arrange order but pictures are in correct order but thumbnails still inaccurate.
    3. Moved/renamed the iphoto library, did option-iphoto, created new library, imported from old library. Now have double the photos (many duplicates) and still have thumbnail issue.
Had 6000 photos, now after import have 12000.
    4. Moved/renamed iphoto library, did a restore from a usb drive and it also has the thumbnail issue.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
    thanks,

    IMAC   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Thanks for the quick reply and helpfulness. New to apple and the mac terminology, but loving every minute!
    see anwers embeded below:
However, from your troubleshooting steps, I suspect
things are not rather more complicated.
    1. Clicked rebuild but did not fix
    Where did you click rebuild?
This is the popup gui that comes up sometimes when I start iPhoto. Is there a way to call this directly?
    3. Moved/renamed the iphoto library, did
option-iphoto, created new library, imported from old
library. Now have double the photos (many duplicates)
    and still have thumbnail issue.
    What's 'option-iphoto'
I think it was the alt option key and then click the iphoto icon or it might have been the two keys (alt and apple)and iphoto icon. After doing this it came up with a dialogue box saying something like rebuild or import.
The reason you have duplicates is that iPhoto creates
a thumbnail of each file as it's imported. I suspect
that when you imported from the old library, you
brought over the full sized pics and the
    thumbnails.
Good call, I think I imported then selected the top level iphoto library. If I do an import again should I just select the iphoto library/data directory which from researching think has the original images or refer to your next question below?
Do you still have the old library?
Yes, have the old library and also a backup from a week ago on another drive.

  • IPhoto thumbnails are missing

A few hours ago I imported a new movie into iMovie. Something went wrong and now all of my iMovie thumbnails are missing from iPhoto in the event area. The only movies I see are ones I imported, nothing from iPhoto is showing anymore. When I click on the camera icon and go to the folder where my movies are in iPhoto nothing shows up. And for some reason my movie is stalling now when I play it where as before it was playing smoothly, well the movie I have so far.
I have tried to delete the iMovie cache file, it took 3 hours to rebuild my thumbnails and they were still not there. I deleted the new files I imported into iPhoto and emptied the trash. Any idea how to fix it? I don't really need all the old thumbnails back as long as I can reinsert them and it doesn't look like iMovie can see them anymore. I wouldn't even care about that if my current movie wasn't stalling, I can hear the sound but the picture pauses. Anyone?

  • IPhoto: thumbnails, links, originals

Photo thumbnails do not distinguiish which are originals and which are links to originals.  If one inadvertantly deletes and original, the thumbnail still looks fine but I know or no way of recreating an original from one.  Two questions:  1 How does one identify the originals?  2 Is there a way to recreate an original from a thumbnail?

How are you deleting the files?  If you're deleting them from the Finder that is the wrong way to delete photos from a library.  Deleting photos should always be done from within iPhoto.
Deleting Photos from an iPhoto Library:
1 - from an Event or the Photos mode: select the photo(s) and use the Delete key to move the photos to the trash bin. Then empty the iPhoto Trash bin as follows:
2 - from an album, smart album, book, slideshow, card, etc.: select the photo(s) and use the key combination of Command+Option+Delete to move the photos to the trash bin.  Then empty the trash bin as above.
NOTE: deleting a photo from an album, slideshow, book, etc., with only the Delete key only deletes that photo from that item. Deleting a photo from an Event deletes ALL occurrences of that photo in the library.
Bottom line: never delete photos via the All Images feature in the Finder or by going into the library via the Finder.
