Iphoto-time machine - restore the iphoto file on an external dirve

Hello Evrybody,
I'm trying to restore an ebook from timemachine on my iphoto library.
I'd like to restore only this file, but it doesn't seem to be possible.
Time machine is able ONLY to restore the entire iphoto library, just ofr on file.
Ok I decide to porceed in any case and restore the entire iphoto library( that is huge) but after hours of work timemachine sends the message"not enouth space on the hard disk, cannot restore the file". Of course I do not have such huge space available in my imac,
Would it possible to restore the iphoto library on an external driver? how can I tell to timemachine to not restore it on my imac but on the external driver?
thanks

Try the following:
Select the folder where your iPhoto library should be y in the Finder.
Open TimeMachine and go back in time to the version of the library you want to restore.
Select the iPhoto Library and ctrl-click it, or right click it.
Select "Restore to" and select a folder on your external disk.

  • Has time machine deleted the other files on my external hard drive?

i used a la cie external hard drive for time machine and now i can't find the files that i had stored on the drive previously, there is only the time machine bck ups - are the files gone forever?

    V.K. is entirely correct.
For future reference, the way to keep "other" files on a TM drive is to partition it. TM will, eventually, fill the space provided to it with backups.
Also, if other data is in the same partition and you ever need to delete all your TM backups and start over, you'll be in something of a pickle (technical term). If it has it own, exclusive partition, all you have to do is erase the partition with Disk Utility.

  • IMac 20-inch on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, my photos from my iphoto library have been deleted. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine, help please.

I have an imac 20-inch Late 2006 model on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, somehow the application ccleaner has deleted my photos from my iphoto library. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine.
To restore photos I have followed the steps below
    Quit iPhoto.
    Connect your Time Machine drive.
In the Finder, open the folder containing your iPhoto Library. Unless you've moved your iPhoto Library, it can be found in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library.
Enter Time Machine.  (Time Machine can be found in the Dock or in the /Applications folder.)
Choose your desired backup. The timeline on the right side of the screen displays a purple tick mark for each of the backups stored on your Time Machine drive.
Select the iPhoto library you would like to restore, and click the Restore button.
I dont get the option in step 6 as I dont have an iphoto library file to choose? Does anyone know why?

    Hi Barry
Thanks but as mentioned all is intact, even at step 3 I can see the current library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library which has no photos, but when I access time machine any point before the NOW option the iphoto library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library is missing from the finder window.
As you can see here it is
and now its gone. I have no explanantion.
How do I go about moving this question as you suggested.

  • After a time machine restore my iPhoto won't open

A few days ago my iPhoto went completely crazy.  I had quadruples of some pictures and events.  My photo amount increased at least 300 percent to 222,000 pictures.  After reading about what to do I did a time machine restore to the iPhoto before this problem happened.  After restoring my iPhoto it won't open at all anymore.  I have version 9.5.1 of iPhoto.  I have not yet downloaded the Yosemite upgrade because a program that I use often is not compatible.  How do I get my iPhoto to open with the restores iPhoto?

How did you do the "restore?" Did you restore the library from the pictures folder?

  • Lost events after Time machine restore of IPhoto library.

My external hard drive failed. On it was my primary iPhoto library.  My motto has been "In Time Machine I trust."  I restored the contents of the external drive on to another external drive and the last month and a half of events are empty.  The events were restored with file names etc, but no photos only a grey exclimation mark.  I looked in the original folder and found those events do not have a folder. How did the IPhoto "database" get backed up , but not the contents?

Check inside the iPhoto Library package in the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder or the Originals (iPhoto 09 or earlier) folder to see if their subfolders actually are empty or do contain the original files.  DO NOT RENAME, DELETE OR MOVE ANY ITEM INSIDE THE PACKAGE USING THE FINDER.
If the original files are there apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Iphoto & Time Machine: Restore Only a few pictures from an Event?

Several month ago I trashed an event (and emptied Iphoto Trash). Now I would like to get that event back with those photos.
I back up every night with Time Machine so I know months ago that specific event and photos should be located. What is the best and easiest way to find that event and collect it again? Can I "browse" the TM files to find it? or am I better entering TM to find it?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

  • How does iPhoto back up using time machine if the library is on and external drive

I'm looking to store my iPhoto library on an external Lacie media drive so I have a central point for images. I intend to do the same with my iTines library although I understand there will be less availabitlity for the music.
    My question is.
If the library is stored externally does that mean that Time Machine will not back these files up and will I have to have to have a 3rd party software to back the Lacie media drive up for safety?
    Regards Graeme

Yes - unless you exclude it - check the TM preferenced to see what is being excluded
and what format is the Lacie media drive? the iPhoto library MUST always be on a drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)

  • Can Time Machine Restore the whole operating system ?

    Hi there,
I understand Time Machine can be used to locate files which were accidentally deleted.
But can it restore the whole OS system together with all the settings to say a 2 weeks ago ?
If can, I desperately beg someone to be kind enough to guide & teach me how to do it step by step.
    Many thanks

    Question 1:
I am doing a full restore on the same Mac. For avoidance of doubt, can you kindly confirm that the first paragraph of item#14 does not apply to me ?
Yup. This works fine if it's the same Mac. That's what it's intended for.
    Question 2:
I have a Lacie Firewire800 external HDD connected to my Mac, I have already updated & backup data on this Lacie FW800 HDD to yesterday.
As I intend to restore the entire system to 2 weeks ago, I am afraid that my Lacie would also be restored to 2 weeks ago, would it ?
When you say "entire system", it refers only to the Mac internal harddrive or everything connected to it ?
Ah, yes, that's a bit misleading. That procedure will restore your internal HD only. By "entire system," it really means everything on your internal HD (which is all most users have): OSX, apps, configuration, users, settings, preferences, data.
If you want to restore an external HD, you must do that separately, so your LaCie won't be touched. Just to be extra-safe, I'd eject and disconnect it if I were you.

  • Can time machine restore system language files deleted by "monolingual'?

I've removed some important language files while using monolingual (namely -English (American) -English (British) not realizing these are subset and required).
I should've read the FAQ first... now some programs are appearing in weird character formats.
Can I replace those files with my Time Machine back ups?
Which folder would I need to replace back with previous file?
Since I did this only late last night, I should be able to just replace a certain system file folder, without causing much headache, I'm hoping!

    Yes.
Which folder would I need to replace back with previous file?
That's the problem; language files aren't in a central location; each application has it's own set of language files, containing the translations of the messages for that application.

I don't know much about Monolingual; I don't know if it removes language files from your System folders, or only Applications. And if you've installed any apps anywhere else, I don't know if it got them, too.
If you're only having trouble with apps, you might be ok to restore only Applications, but to get everything back the way it was, you'd need to do a full system restore, per #14 in the Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Time Machine back-ups of files in an external HD drive connected to the Mac?

I usually use Time Machine for automatic back-ups of all the content in my Mac, into a Time Capsule device.
I intend now to transfer my heavier files (domestic video files for example) to a new external Hard Drive, in order to release storage espace in the Mac itself. But I want to keep the automatic back-up feature that I have already for my Mac content, also for the files that will be transferred to the external drive. I do not want to take the risk of loss of these external files without having a back-support for recovering in case of damages.
The question is: How can I configure the Time Machine to make automatically the back-up of the external drive content into the Time Capsule, in the same automatic way than the rest of files in the Mac? Is that possible for such an external drive?
Thanks in advance for your support and best regards,
    Alejandro

External drives are automatically added to the TM exclusion list. To back them up, all you have to do is remove them from that list in the TM preference pane. Click Options.

  • Time machine says the backup file is too big but...

Hi. My time machine back up stopped working.  It tells me that the back up file is too large.  I have a WD external 500GB Mybook.  I am trying to back up my 500GB MacBook.  "Get Info" on the MacBook indicates that there is 153GB on disk.  "Get Info" on the Mybook indicates that there is 278.8 GB available.  However, when I attempt to run backup in Time Machine I get the following message: "This backup is too large for the backup volume.  The backup requires 378.4 GB but only 278.8 GB are avalable..."
Why is Time Machine telling me that the backup file is 378.4GB when my MacBook shows that I only have 153GB on disk?  If I only have 153GB on disk, 278.8GB of free space in the backup volume should be sufficient for me to back up right? What am I missing here?

Same problem here, found any solution yet guys?

  • If I filled the system hard drive, and I'll delete anything on it, it's off and on the external drive, or can I safely clean the system hard drive and all that was done in the Time Machine in the same place, on an external hard drive and will remain ?

    Please help

Time Machine does delete "old" backups, eventually.  "Eventually" is controlled by whether or not you have used all of the space on the TM drive.  If you have "more free space" on the TM drive, then nothing should be deleted yet.
If youd elete files from a system drive, and continue on the same TM set, TM does NOT scour all old records to purge missing files ... else the "time" part of "Time Machine" makes no sense.

  • Two Time Machines from the same computer on one external drive?

Hello all. I tried searching for a similar situation but didn't see one.
I have a MBP running Leopard 10.5.8. Its Time Machine is located on an external mirrored raid LaCie drive.
I have installed Snow Leopard on a separate external LaCie d2 drive on its own partition. On a second partition of that drive is a clone of the MBP HD (with Leopard 10.5.8).
Can the external mirrored raid LaCie drive I use for Time Machine contain both of the Time Machine backups that are created by the same MBP - one when Leopoard is running, and another when Snow Leopard is running?
Thanks. I hope I've posed the question clearly enough to trigger thoughts. It's a brain twister for me ...

Can the external mirrored raid LaCie drive I use for Time Machine contain both of the Time Machine backups that are created by the same MBP - one when Leopoard is running, and another when Snow Leopard is running?
Yes, but it's not the best solution. A better solution is a separate drive or a separate volume on the same drive in order to keep the backups separate. In this way if anything happens to the Leopard backup volume it won't affect the SL backup volume.
If you do as you propose each system's backup will be separate but stored in the same Backups.backupd folder as long as you use a different Computer Name in each system. Your backup drive will need to be large enough to maintain full backups of each.

  • IPhoto Time Machine restore.

iMac went in to Apple store. Came out with a new HD and new install of Snow Leopard and iLife 08. When it went it originally it had an up to date, and what I thought was a slightly corrupted Leopard and iLife 08. Ok fine. SL, but no restore disks, why they did that I don't know.
So I fire up TM first thinking I want to do is restore at least iPhoto and iTunes. Took me a bit to realize that they created an initial account called admin. I created an account for me, same as I had it before when I had leopard and have the imac boot up into that account.
I fired up iPhoto go to Browse Backups, but I can't see any of my backups. After much fitzing about I do manage to recover a backup from about a month previous. It had to do with permissions between the backup and the current Snow Leopard.
I have TM backups going back months, but iPhoto does not see any of them.
TM itself shows the backups but I can not access any of them. I had to modify the permissions on the TM backups directly to recover things with TM.
Many of the folders had a tiny red ! on the corners of them relating to permissions.
So I start going through events and realize that I have the dreaded ! mark when clicking on a thumbnail. It is not all photos. I have an event with 20 photos, about 8 pics are there, but the rest are !. I did not modify any of the files in that event as I did not have time before the iMac started screwing up.
What do I do to recover backups I know are there and go back months?
And what was the point of having TM backups if I can not recover things easily after having apple techs in an apple store reinstall on a new HD?
    Thanks.

    Ok.
I must have done that but the problem is the apple store techs created an account called appletemp, and now appletemp is the only account that has RW permissions to the TM backups. The account I created for myself has no access to those backups. I have to manually add myself to the permissions on the Pictures folder. Is this the right way to handle that? How can I give myself permissions to my TM bacukps?
    Thanks.

  • Time machine restore randomly missing files

Macbook refused to boot, apple store cleared it up, told me to do a backup from time capsule.  Files that were on my desktop are missing.  The time capsule reports doing complete backups frequently and as recently as monday.  Why am I missing files and folders that were clearly there?  I can go back further and find certain files, but shouldn't they all appear from a restore?

Restore can have issues.. how did you restore.. migrate your files? Or do it another way?
Manually restore files if you need to.. but if you were on Mountain Lion and you restored to Mavericks.. don't expect things to be the same.
For actual migration instructions look at Pondini here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
He does not have mavericks but look at the closest.. ie Mountain Lion.
    Look at the problems.
And be aware things like restoring to identical user causes problems.
Restore is also covered in Q14-17 here .
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
And many many issues in the troubleshooting section.
BTW you will see comments from several people here to do some disk images.. use software like CCC or superduper and keep TM for incremental only.. it is not so great for restore of a whole disk.
