IPhoto to Aperture Events vs. Albums?

I'm sorry if this is an obvious question, but I'm new to Aperture.
I imported two rather substantial libraries from iPhoto into Aperture. I got all my folders and albums from iPhoto. I also got an Events folder for each library filled with Projects containing duplicates of all the images. What is the relationship between those Projects and the images within them and the Albums? Do I need to keep both? Aperture seems very versatile about file organization, but also a little confusing.
Thanks.

Projects are physical objects. They hold photos.
Albums are logical objects (like database "views"). They hold nothing, but can show you various views of photos -- be they in the projects that hold the photos, or in other projects. You can delete albums and photos will not be deleted.

  • IPhoto to Aperture, Events vs. Projects

Hello, I recently imported my iPhoto library into Aperture and am overall pleased with all that Aperture has to offer. However, there are a couple things that are really frustrating to me that I miss in iPhoto.
One that I miss is that in iPhoto, when I am inside of an event, when I double click in any gray area it returns me to the All Events page. In Aperture that does not work when I am inside a project. To go back to All Projects view I have to go to the Inspector or to the icon I added to the Toolbar. Please tell me if I am missing something.
Even more annoying is that in Events view in iPhoto, I could just go to the next event by clicking the forward/back arrows in the upper right corner while inside an event. In Aperture I have to go click on Projects to see all my Projects, then double click on the next project, again, I hope I am missing something.
Any tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Iphoto, Creating events and Albums

I have attempted to create events and albums on the photo app in Ipad with no success. I have also synced the iPad to itunes and transfered pictures from an existing iphoto (macbook pro) event with no success. How can i create events and albums on the Ipad so i can seperate new pictures into specific areas for viewing.

You can't. Photos on the iPad doesn't have organising features. You can't create groupings, or copy from one event/whatever to another. You have limited features in the 'camera roll' for images you've saved onto the iPad - you can delete them or share them.
Your organising has to be done on the Mac in iPhoto or Aperture. Both create Events based on metadata from the image (date and time and so on). You can make albums and sync the albums to the iPad.
I know that isn't what you want, but it's all we've got. It bears repeating - the iPad is not a completely standalone device - it's dependent on a desktop and iTunes for its full functionality.

  • Is there a way to sync both iPhoto and Aperture albums?

I see that there is a drop down menu that will allow me to select either iPhoto or Aperture to sync with. My question is it possible to sync from both?
I use Aperture with my DSLR and iPhoto for my point-and-shoot.

Yeah I'm in the same boat here. I just got a MacBook Pro yesterday, switching from Windows, and I was shocked to find that syncing photos from my new computer onto my iPhone is aparently a much bigger pain in the rear than it ever was with Windows.
This is not correct - you just don't know what is available to you.
iPhoto has a single library where all photos are stored just as with iTunes and music/video and with the Address Book application for contact information. iPhoto 08 includes Events along with creating albums.
You don't need to split events to create an album or albums. All Photos remain in the iPhoto's library and any photos placed in events or albums includes a pointer to the original photos available in the main library and are not duplicated. A photo cannot be available in an Event or an Album unless it is available in main iPhoto library. You can have the same photo in multiple events or albums just as you can have the same song in multiple iTunes Playlists and the same contact in multiple Groups with the Address Book.
The sync option for Events is all or the 1,3,5,10 or 20 most recent but you can select individual albums to be transferred to the iPhone.
This will provide for viewing the photos available in an album only when selecting the album on the iPhone or you can view all photos available in all albums by selecting the Photo Library on the iPhone.

  • Aperture-sorted event and album images out of order

I am syncing events and albums from Aperture to my iPad through iTunes. In iOS iPhoto the images within these events and albums have a seemingly random sort order, rendering the application useless to me. The sort order is fine in the iOS Photos application, so I am thinking it is a problem with iOS iPhoto. Anyone have a fix for this? I thought it would surely be fixed in the new update, but it was not. I have uninstalled and reinstalled iOS iPhoto, have unsynced and resynced albums, etcetera.
I know this pertains to old threads, but couldn't find one that was coherent. Hopefully this one is.

I have no fix to offer as I am affected by it too. I posted one of the original threads on this and have used the Apple report a problem system to report it too. I am amazed this issue wasn't addressed in the update. It makes iPhoto on the iPad unusable for me.
I've just submitted repeat feedback on the problem to http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto_ios.html

  • IPhoto to Aperture 3 "events"

I recently went from iPhoto to Aperture 3. Everything transferred fine but I am hoping to get an answer for a question about the "events". In iPhoto I never organized the events at all. I have over 1200 events and organized all my photos in "albums". Now in Aperture I have folder with over 1200 events which are listed basically by date. I can simply close this folder and ignore it but i was wondering if it is also important to organize all the events. If so are there any suggestions on how to do this? Does the way the events are organized effect my albums at all? I really appreciate any input from people on this.
    Thank you very much!

While I am fairly new to Aperture (everyone, feel free to offer any corrections), I made the same iPhoto to Aperture move, and never really used Projects in iPhoto either. iPhoto Projects always seemed like just another set of Albums, and not really relevant with my system of album organization.
In Aperture, Events are the first level of organization, and ignoring them as we did in iPhoto is fighting how Aperture works.
FWIW, this is how I've come to view Aperture Events. Perhaps it will be helpful to you...
Events are similar to the Library in that all photos must be in an Event. Unlike Albums, you cannot have an image in your Library which is not in an Event. In effect, an Event can be like a " mini Library" for whatever subset of your images you choose (a day, a shoot, a location), because you can have Folders and Albums within an Event. You can still organize with Folders and Albums which are not housed within an Event, and also can contain images from multiple Events, but the "mini library" that Events basically are, are not well suited to being ignored as Projects could be in iPhoto.
Hope that helps (and that I didn't steer you wrong! )

just some notes in addition to Ralphs answer: Your iPad is very useful to browse and show off your photos, i.e. the Retina iPad. You can sync to the iPad via iTunes or using the Photo Stream or a shared Photo Stream.  But if you can browse and store all your photos on the iPad, will depend on the available storage on your iPad. Using iTunes you can sync events, albums, faces stacks, places stacks to your iPad. Not many metadata tags will transfer however.

I deleted the photos via Finder and empty trash long time ago. The thing is, that I want to recover one event or album.  The event appears in the iphoto but when open, it shows "!". Is it possible to recover the photos?

No.  When you removed the photos via the finder you damage the library.  Photos should always be removed from the library using iPhoto, never with the Finder.
If you have a Time Machine backup of the library from before you deleted the photos you can restore the library to the Desktop and export that album from it to import into your current library.
It's been too long to be able to try one of the file recovery applications.  You sure to have overwritten those files with new files since them.

  • Move from iPhoto '11 to Lightroom using PS Elements to keep Events and Albums

I am trying to move from iPhoto '11 to Lightroom by using PS Elements as a go-between to keep events and album but it doesn't appear that the option to keep events and albums is possible using iPhoto '11.  However, the instructions for coming from iPhoto '09 show that option.  Is there any way to do this?

I’m not sure about that routine. I’m not even sure events are transferrable and there of lots of things that could go wrong. You may want to think about importing your masters directly into Ligtroom. From finder you need to be in Pictures (not the application) and control-click on iPhoto Library.
iPhoto will have created duplicates and hidden your originals. You need to find your masters from the iPhoto Library - Right-Click and select “Show Package Contents”
Older versions of iPhoto uses an Originals folder and in later versions; Masters. It’s not a good idea to go messing with the structure as it could corrupt the iPhoto Library. Apple has made this structure for good reason; so that you can always use the revert command to go back to an original, even if you have edited in iPhoto using cropping or red eye removal, for example.
However, if you have no further use for iPhoto, you could consider moving your originals/masters to a new folder structure (iPhoto automatically creates dated sub-folders) and then importing to Lightroom. Alternatively if you still need iPhoto, export duplicates to the desktop and bring those into Lightroom. That will keep iPhoto safe.
I do actually use iPhoto for creating events which can then be used to make cool slideshows within iPhoto. However Lightroom is my main management and photo editing tool and I have created an export pre-set for sending jpegs into iPhoto. I have even dragged the iPhoto Library off the hard drive to an external hard drive – but that means keeping it connected when using iPhoto.

  • Iphoto, events or albums

which is better or has better advantages, events or albums?

Are you asking about iPhoto on your Mac?
which is better or has better advantages, events or albums?
Events an albums serve different purposes - you will need both, see:                  iPhoto and File Management
Events are the basic containers in your iPhoto library. On import, each photo will be filed in an event.
Albums will help you to retrieve your photos quickly. Set up your albums in a way, that related photos are grouped into albums for specific purposes. You can add the same photo to several albums, without needing mor space. Albums are just indexes to the photos stored in events.

  • Iphoto events vs albums

If photos are deleted from events will they remain in the albums I created. I copied and pasted the pics from events into albums, and now want to delete the events so we don't have duplicates...

If photos are deleted from events will they remain in the albums I created.
    No.
iPhoto works on a similar Library based principle to iTunes. Every Photo is in the Library, each Album (like a playlist in iTunes) is a subset of the Library.
Events are the Library. They broadly correspond to the actual folders on the HD that contain the pics. Trash a pic from an Album, you remove it from the Album, but it's still in the Library. Trash a pic from an Event and it's gone from the Library and all the albums too.
I copied and pasted the pics from events into albums, and now want to delete the events so we don't have duplicates...
First off: don't copy and paste. Drag and drop is more reliable way to move photos around in the iPhoto Window.
Second: There are no duplicates. Albums simply reference the photos in the Library. A pic can be in 50 Albums with no duplication required, no extra disk space used. A photo in more than one Event requires a duplicate.
    For the benefit of nequetech
    This is not true:
Events in iPhoto are actually Albums.
    This is incorrect:
    They mean the same thing,
    As is this:
    unless you have older versions.
    This
If you were to delete the duplicates, I suggest you drag every picture from one event to a folder in your desktop.
is data destructive. You only get the current version of your photo, not the Original, you lose a lot of metadata as well.
This may be your preferred way to deal with duplicates, but Duplicate Annihilator is at least non-destructive - and I'm not at all sure that the OP actually has a duplicates issue at all.

  • IPhoto '08: Events, (Smart) Albums, Web Gallery & Slideshows ???

I recently upgraded to iPhoto '08 and I am confused.
I must admit I used iPhoto before to look at my pictures but I never bothered with any albums or slideshows or whatever, but now with more and more pictures I need to organize.
So this new iPhoto comes with all sorts of way to organize such as Events, (Smart) Albums, Web Galleries & Slideshows. Quiet frankly I am LOST as to what to use when or for what ???
Okay I can get Web Galleries is for posting on the .mac as a gallery. Why did they do this again if you iWeb that creates photo pages???? Why is this not integrated in iWeb????
Now moving on. What's the difference between Events, (Smart Albums) and Slideshows. They seem to be ways to organize your photos. BUT why have THREE of them? When to use which one?
Any help or comment appreciated as I am confused ....

Events, Smart Albums, Albums and slideshows are different. Here is a short explanation of each:
Events= Every time you import photos from your camera or via drag & drop a new Event is created. This is the basic (automatic) way that iPhoto organizes your photos. Events are date based and can be split or merged based on your preferences. For example, you go to a birthday party and take a few photos, a few days later you go to a picnic and take a few photos. When you import the images, iPhoto will split the pictures into two distinct events. (Check The iPhoto Preferences/Events for some options).
Albums= These are containers that you create to easily group photos in any way you prefer (ex. Combine photos from a couple of holiday parties into one album). You can drag and drop photos in Albums. When you delete a photo in an Album it does not get deleted from the main library. Albums contain links to the photos, not the actual photos. You can manually re-order the photos in an Album. It is always a good idea to create an Album first, edit and re-order your photos there and then create a slideshow, book or web gallery from the Album.
Smart Albums= These are Albums you create that have specific rules, they automatically get updated every time a photo meets the specific set of rules. Smart Albums (SA) can have one or more rules. ex. You have 2 different cameras and you automatically want to see the photos captured by each camera. You create 2 Smart Albums that contain the Rule = Camera Model > is > Nikon D40 (or whatever). Next time you import photos from that camera, the SA will show these photos automatically. (Note: These are links, but if you delete an image, unless you delete it permanently it will re-appear in the SA, as long as it still has the required value of the SA. You can sort by Keyword, Ratings etc using Smart Albums, and you can have multiple sort rules, like Keyword = Birthday and Rating is 5 stars.
Slideshows= iPhoto has 2 types of slideshows available. The first is the "quick" slideshow. You can select any Album or Smart Album click on the Play button, set the transition select the music and you are ready to go. The 2nd type, the Cinematic Slideshow, are albums created specifically as Slideshows. They contain photos you selected and you want to see on your screen in a slideshow presentation. You can set specific transitions between slides, set individual slide times, select music and specify where the Ken Burns effect will start in a slide and where it will end. They are more elaborate than the Quick slideshows.
Web Galleries = are a quick way to share photos with friends, you just select the Photos and click on the Web Gallery button. You set some basic options and publish. Visitors get to see the photos in 3-4 different views including a slideshow, but you can also allow the viewers to add photos to your web gallery. Every time you add a new photo to a web gallery album in iPhoto, it will update the web site when you click the little publish icon next to the name. You can also set tan option to make this happen at specific intervals. (Check the iPhoto Preferences/Web Gallery).
I hope this answered some of your questions. Good luck.
