IPhoto to Aperture - How to move photos?

Ok, I am new to Aperture, and I would like to import all my photos from iPhoto to Aperture. That means that I stop completely using iPhoto and switch to Aperture. After I did that, I saw that in my Picture folder I stll have iPhoto library (~70 GB) and a new Aperture Library.aplibrary(~). What I would like to have is the following:
1. All my masters in one Aperture folder/library. So, the question is how to make Aperture move (or at least be sure that it had copied) all my pictures into one place.
2. I would like to have all my masters on external drive, but still being able to show a preview of my photos on my MacBook without the external drive. Is this possible? If yes, how do I do that?
Thank you in advance

I'm pretty sure you can, yes.
But here's trick if you're worried: - Make a copy of the iPhoto Library on another disk. Then trash it from the main disk.
Then test Aperture - especially exporting etc -  and make sure it works correctly. If it doesn't - no harm done you have the copy

  • HT204414 How to import both iPhoto and Aperture library to iCloud Photo Library (Photos app)

    Hi all,
Based on the article here (Designate a System Photo Library in Photos - Apple Support) has anyone tried to bring both an iPhoto and Aperture library into iCloud Photo Library so that both libraries are available as one in iCloud and form the one Photos app library rather than being seen as separate libraries. I don't want the two separated as I have 200GB's of space in iCloud which is plenty to hold the two's collective space of about 40GB's.
It seems as though the procedure is pretty simple.
First of all set one of your libraries as the System Photo Library, this will happen naturally with setting up Photos app for the first time. I chose iPhoto as the original library.
Let this library upload all it's photo's to iCloud over a few minutes, hours, days etc.
When finished, enter your other library by closing Photos app and reopening while holding down the Option key (usually Alt). In this case I now opened the Aperture library that it had found.
Under Preferences > iCloud set this library as the System Photo Library and in turn it will have the ability to upload to iCloud.
When it's finished I suppose you will have both iPhoto AND Aperture pictures in the one iCloud Photo Library.
At least I hope the above makes sense.
Anybody already tried this with good / bad results, let us know here.

found it here  - 'If you designate a new library as the System Photo Library and then turn on iCloud Photo Library, the photos and videos in the new library will merge with those already in your iCloud Photo Library. If you want to keep the contents of your photo libraries separate, don’t turn on iCloud Photo Library for more than one library in Photos.'
That bit seems clear. You can merge photos from different libraries by making them 'designated' first  .
BUT  this means that Photos app only shows you library A , or library B, depending on which one you have opened , but Icloud library contains photos from Both library A and library B .
    is this correct ?
and if so, does it not get a but confusing ?!?

  • In Lightroom mobile how can move photos within the collection????

In Lightroom mobile how can move photos within the collection????

What you can do is to move (or copy) a photo form one collection to another. This can be triggered via the top right app menu item from grid view. Same menu is available when you open up an image for editing. Hope that helps. -Guido

  • In addition to wanting to know how to move photos around on ipad , i also want to know how to delete photos

In addition to wanting to know how to move photos around on ipad , i also want to know how to delete photos

Photos that were synced from your computer can't be deleted directly on the iPad - they are deleted by moving them from where they were synced from on your computer and then re-syncing, and they should then be removed from the iPad.
You also can't alter the order of photos in the Photos app, the sorting needs to be done on your computer prior to syncing : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4221

  • IPhoto 9.6: How to move your iPhoto library to a new location?

    Hello,
How do I move my iPhoto libraries from my system disk to a data only disk in iPhoto 9.6?
I followed the instructions on this support website titled " iPhoto 9.5: How to move your iPhoto library to a new location."
However, this only appears to have copied the libraries, not move them.
According to what I see in Finder, I now have the same library on two different disks, but that was not my intention.
    Thank you

So, delete the one from the unwanted location.
When you move data across volumes by default it is copied to the new location, afterwards you delete it from the previous location. It's a sensible protection against dataloss of anything goes wrong with the copy.

  • From Iphoto to Aperture? & Backing up Photos/Movies.

I am looking to make the move from just Iphoto to Aperture. Not sure why I haven't - why not?
BUT I also need to decide where and how to store/backup all my many photo's and movies. What do most people do? What is the BEST thing to do for longterm? Nothing feels permanent except printing. HELP ! It's my biggest fear not being able to access all my photos in 20+ years. your advice please!

How big is your iPhoto Library, and how will you organize your Aperture Library?
If you are planning to work with a managed Aperture Library (all master files are included in the Aperture Library Package) and the Aperture Library resides on your System Drive, then your regular Time Machine Backup will include all your images as well.
If you have referenced masters, you need to include the drive that contains the master files into your backup scheme.
To be on the safe side, you will need more than one backup, stored on different devices, and preferably the devices stored in different places. Also it is highly recommended to make a backup of the original master files right from the card, before you import them into Aperture.
To create backups in addition to Time Machine: A managed Aperture Library you can backup by copying the Aperture Library Package using the Finder's copy function, or better, by creating a backup with a tool like "SuperDuper", since this program can make incremental backups.
Also, you could create a vault for backup, but I do not use that any longer, since Time Machine now seems to work o.k. with Aperture Libraries.
I hope you will get many more recommendations from this forum - the backup workflow widely depends on the size of your library, the organisation of your library, and the extent of safety required.

  • How to move photo's but keep iPhoto library intact?

    Hi,
I keep my photo's (actual files) on a NAS drive accessible through WiFi. These photo's are imported (but not copied) into an iPhoto library which resides on my laptop.
Now, on the NAS I want to move these photo's to a different directory on the NAS.
I tried moving them hoping I could change the source location in iPhoto. This does work when I change the location for each single photo. However with about 15,000 photo's this would take a long time.
I could re-import them but then I'd lose all the faces, places and such.
Does anyone know of a way to change the source location, say in the iphoto library package?
    thanks in advance!

    You can not using iPhoto
You can if you can hack the SQLite database ( some have posted how to do that) or use APerture
This is one of many reasons that referenced libraries are strongly not recommended in iPhoto

  • Photoshop elements 8 for Mac - how to move photos (events) from iphoto to pse

I have figured out how to move one  photo over through opening a file.  But I can't move a full event or album from iphoto.  Ive tried going to bridge but when i click on the iphoto folder, it takes me into my iphoto and I'm not sure what do then, no buttons or anything that seems to connect to PSE.  Any help would be appreciated!  I wish Adobe supported this product better for Mac users.  Maybe they read these discussions?

    Hi,
Are you opening iPhoto files from within Photoshop Elements? You can open all the files in an iPhoto event into PSE8 through a single click.
In Photoshop Elements, go to File menu > Open. In the browser window that appears, click Photos under Media in the sidebar. Now, you should be able to see iPhoto with all its events. When you click on an event and "Open" it, you should get all the photos of that event in the project bin.
Is this the problem being asked?
    Thanks.

  • How to move photos from laptop to ipad?

How can I move photo files from by laptop to my ipad?

Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • How to move photos from photo stream to albums on iPad

How do I move photos between stream and album or any other place

You could do it by setting up a Shared Photo Stream. Select the photos in the Photo app then tap the Shared button selecting Photo Stream. Just don't enter any email address and it will appear on your other devices. Only photos can be added and not albums so you will have to re-organize then on the iPhone.
I would recommend getting the photos to the computer as well though. Create a photo library on the computer and sync then over to the iphone with iTunes. The photo library on the computer can be added to a more reliable backup.

  • How to move photos from one library to another?

    Hi,
I currently have 2 libraries and I want to move photos from one library into the other.
How do I have to proceed?
    Thx
    A

We're thinking of adding a library copy feature soon.  Hoping you can share some info here to help us understand how this might best work fo you.   Here's a few questions I have:
    - What do you use the 2 libraries for?
      - Why do you want to copy?
      - Do you have albums, favorites, and comments associated with the photos?  Do you want them copied?
Anything else that you are hoping to accomplish here?
    Thanks in advance,
    Peter

  • How to move photo's between libraries?

I have been moving photos from one library to another by dragging them to the desktop from a library and then using the Import command to place them in the new library. I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere as a way to move photo's between libraries. I didn't use the Export command simply because it was easier not to. The new library works ok, but did I lose something by using this method? When I use my method, I am only copying the edited version but not the "original" photo that may be in the library. Therefore, I don't have the original in the new library if I need it. This is ok since I no longer need the original. Do I understand this correctly. I would appreciate any explanation about this so.
    I am using iPhoto '08 version 7.1.5.

Yes, if you drag from the iPhoto Window to the desktop you’re getting the current (edited) version of the pic. You’re also missing any added metadata, such as keywords etc.
Yes, when you import to the other library you are missing the original file too.
The only way to move pics/albums/Events (including metadata) between Libraries (and all versions) is with iPhoto Library Manager.

  • How to move photos in Dreamweaver MX?

I have an index page (you can see my web page at
    http://www.PhotographerAtlanta.com)
where in my local view, I can't move the 2 portrait photos at the
top, nor can I really enlarge them, otherwise the one drops to
another row below it, as though they won't fit side by side. Yet
the picture under those two, of a bride, is much wider than the 2
small portraits. Why can't I make the 2 top portrait pictures wide
enough to match the width of the photo below?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Step back from the keyboard and take a deep breath.
Clear your mind of everything you know about word processors,
    publishing
    applications and image editors.
Now, find a good book on html and css and get a good
    understanding of the
    concepts.
You can not drag and drop text, images or other content in
    html documents.
Dreamweaver has some of this functionality in the design
    view, but
basically, you must describe your layout in html. The code
    tells the
browsers where to place text and images, how to style them,
    how they will
    relate to each other.
to get started, try tables for positioning images and text.
    Tabs and spaces
don't work. Then check out some tutorials on div positioning
    and css to
    style your page.
Lurk about on this forum a lot and read the many posts on
    these issues.
It's a steep learning curve, but the most important thing is
    not to confuse
Dreamweaver or html markup with Word, or Publisher. They are
    not at all
    related.
And PLEASE... do not fall into the trap of letting one of
    those programs
create html code for you. They will simply make a huge mess
    of it.
(reference many posts here on that subject.)
    Good luck
