Iphoto to imovie to idvd should work right?

After importing my photos and little AVI movies from my Canon digital camera to iphoto, I decided to make a slightly cooler DVD by adding more transitions, chapter titles, video and sound effects. So I imported them into imovie. Everything looked great and I pushed the create idvd button. I made cool menus and dropped slides into the right menus and drop zones etc. Previews played back fine. I was ready to burn. That was three days ago!!! Four successive attempts to burn the DVD failed.
First a multiplexing problem. I seemed to fix that by taking stuff off my startup disc. Keeping 26 gigs did the trick.
Then there was this burning error that I still cannot figure out.
I tested my burner first by taking one of the mini movies from my imovie and burned a DVD in the finder. It burned fine. The file I burned just could not open! I keep getting the following quicktime error: my "quicktime.mp4 contains invalid MPEG-4 audio, see below....An audio elementary stream descriptor is corrupted. Expected type=0X65736473 ('esds');found type=0X000000001 instead"
I have considered taking each movie I imported from iphoto and converting it with my Quicktime Pro (to what I'm not sure yet) and then putting it back into imovie and then IDVD once again. Also, I have considered starting over with iphoto again. This time importing them from imovie directly rather than exporting them from iphoto and then importing them into imovie. (By the way should the frames be black in the timeline? Only the movies are visible. They all play fine on the viewer but for some reason that does not seem right.
Anyway, shouldn't iMovie be converting ANY movie imported from iPhoto into a format that iDVD understands? Also, if everything previews fine in IDVD, shouldn't it be burning fine too? I mean these programs are suppose to be seamless right?
I have the option of omitting iphoto and i movie altogether by importing the pictures and movies into FCE2 and then burning it in toast. Is that an easier solution? Is there any formula to get the best DVD from digital photos and movies from a digital camera? Anyway, any ideas and thoughts would be most welcome.

I ended up re doing the entire project again. This time though I cropped the photos in iphoto first then exported them as dv files to imovie. This seems to have worked though I was very disappointed with the performance of Imovie and idvd. The transitions between photos in idvd sometimes were yellow particularly the one that the picture shrinks and fades away. Also the pictures seem to be perfectly clear then turn fuzzy. This seems to be a change from earlier versions of the program. I am going to experiment with importing photos info fce2 and directly into idvd. it may be that imovie and idvd are just inferior programs to something like fce2 or dvd studio pro. Good luck

  • IDVD not working right with Snow Leopard...a possible fix

I was having the following issue with iDVD and my new fresh install on a new hard drive of snow leopard 10.6.4:
iDVD would open to the screen where you chose what you want to do
I would click create a new project and get to name it
Nothing would happen but I knew the program was still running. I could see it in the activity monitor
I would go to quit iDVD and it would ask me to save changes and the beach ball would start spinning and I would have to force quit from the dock
Then I found this post after looking litterally all day for a fix....these instructions worked for me and my iDVD is now working normally...
    (1) Go this folder:
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/GraphicsAppSupport.framework/Versions/A/Framew orks/
    (2) There should be 3 aliases there:
    ImageIO.framework
    ImageKit.framework
    QuartzComposer.framework
    (3) In my case, the QuartzComposer.framework was actually a folder. I removed this and created a new alias to
    /System/Library/Frameworks/Quartz.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/QuartzComposer .framework
After making the new alias, iDVD now works just fine. Not sure why this frameworks folder had become damaged like this. I am hoping that there are no negative effects on any of my other applications, but I've kept a backup of the original folder just in case.
I moed the quartzcomposer folder to 2 levels back and made an alias and put it in the A/frameworks folder and viola...iDVD worked for me! I am a happy mac user now

Thanks, had exactly the same problem.
    Switched to administrator
    $ su adminusername
    Navigated to the folder
    $ cd /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/GraphicsAppSupport.framework/Versions/A/Frame works
Listed the contents of the folder
    $ ls -le@
    Renamed the folder QuartzComposer.framework
    $ sudo mv QuartzComposer.framework/ QuartzComposer.framework.old/
Replaced with a symbolic link to the correct framework
    $ sudo ln -s /System/Library/Frameworks/Quartz.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/QuartzCompose r.framework /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/GraphicsAppSupport.framework/Versions/A/Frame works
    iDVD works!!!

  • Unable to view and use iphotos within imovie or idvd

I recently upgraded to iLife '06 and I would like to view and use my iphotos from within imovie. But for some reason I cannot. When I click on the media button, I can bring in any of my iTunes music. But when I click on the photos button, nothing, except for a message to launch iphoto2 or later appears. the Show Photo Settings button is present, but nothing happens when I click. I do keep my photo library on a second hard drive, not the one which stores the applications. I've rebuilt the database several times. any suggestions are appreciated. -ab

I discovered the root of the problem was an " & " used in the file name of my iPhoto library. That is evidently a no-no. After I renemed the library and restarted, all was working fine. -ab

  • Ichat should work right off the box!

I've been strugling to get video chat to work for months. Users should never have to deal with the complications of network setting and port opening, or if there is any problem the application should be able to point out the right way to solve the issues. It's frustrating to see "user not respond" and "insufficient bandwidth", even when the real problem has little to do with these messages.
ichat should just work. I'm saying this because long hours of correcting network problems at your end doesn't mean that you'll be able to chat with anyone who might have problems at their end as well. I'm able to get my ichat to work with apple test account but whenever I wanted to talk with anyone I had to go through troubleshooting their network setting to make sure that everything is ok. It is just a waste of time and productivity...
It's a shame that my only quick solution was to go back to my old pc laptop and use msn messanger for video conference with them. Yes you hear it right, the IM app with those ugly and distastful ad and interface. Guess what? it always worked!
Since when that mac users need to substitute their reliable OS with microsoft windows?
(I hope this doesn't offend anyone. I just need to complain)

I understand what you're trying to say.
Apple shouldn't be responsible for anyone who's not capable of using thier machine either. Most of people here have spent considerable amount of time in trying to get this thing to work and they all had to be responsible for their time too.
I'm aware of compatibility issue between apple's application and third-party routers/modems, let alone the fact that ichat connectivity problem from airport base station can also be seen. Any developer of applications like P2P sharing or IM should bear in mind the variability of protocols and standards employed in network periperials people are using these days. Having considered that, I'd say Skype is a successful story.
So are you saying that there is nothing there needed to be done? One type of users, who appreciate a machine that can do things they want it to do, will have very different opinion to the other type of users, who like to see how the machine is doing it. There is no right or wrong here. It just a subjective view. Some users of ichat are definitely not so happy. That is the fact.
I believe everybody here appreciate you and Ralph's helps. There is no doubt to that.

  • IPhoto? iMovie?  What should I use?

I have a slideshow that will have 473 photos plus music. I've tried to do a slideshow before in iPhoto and it was a disaster. When I burned it to DVD, the photos were there, but the music wasn't (I don't think the football program was impressed!). So....now I'm trying out iMovie and I've had even more problems. It quits on me constantly and now that I've finally been able to "save" it will all of the 473 photos without it quiting...the photos look terrible! They are a little fuzzy and pixelized - not at all the same quality that they appear in iPhoto. HELP!!!!!! I have to have this done by tomorrow night!

    Hi, Shannon.
Personally, I would do the whole slideshow project in iDVD. You can select photos and music, same as in iMovie. You can add titles and comments to any photo if you want. You only get to choose 1 type of transition, but that keeps your slideshow simple and uniform. Plus, you don't have to worry about the iMovie rendering bug (when iMovie renders stills they can come out with the "jaggies" and looking strange, even when your watch the DVD on a TV). And when you finish, have iDVD create a disk image that you can mount and watch on your Mac before you burn the DVD. This will be exactly the same as your final DVD, so you can check if it functions the way you want (ex: music, menus, are in place). REMEMBER - comp. monitor resolution is WAY better than TV screen resolution, so don't worry if it looks a bit fuzzy. Chances are it will look fine on the TV. The rendering, etc. that it does takes several hours, but if you are happy with the disk image then it takes only a few minutes to burn it to yur DVD.
The first DVD I ever made was almost finished when I decided to add slideshows as an afterthought. My DVD project contained 4 small movies (each one a seperate iMovie project) and I added a slideshow to 3 of them. They were the easiest part of the whole project.
    Good luck.

  • IPhoto 6 and how it should work with edited images

While iPhoto 6 is an improvement over previous versions in the way images are handled it is still a far cry from being perfect. At last, iPhoto does not create a duplicate within its own library but allows — through the advanced option tab — to work through an alias to the original file, thereby preserving my library structure.
    Two problems remain:
    a) when an image is deleted outside iPhoto the corresponding alias in iPhoto is not deleted upon startup. And getting rid of the ensuing error dialogue is unnerving. Why can iPhoto not browse through the original library and update its aliases when I start the application?
    b) when an image is edited in iPhoto a “modified version” is created in iPhoto’s library. Grrr.... back to square one. I don’t want all that clutter on my harddrive and while I can see that some users need to have that safety belt I would wish for an option to tell iPhoto to change the original directly (and not create a copy). I don’t work exclusively with iPhoto only and don’t want to think each and every time where the most recent version of a photo is stored.
So, for the time being I’m back to iView Media... which is not supported through all the media browsers that access iPhoto’s library but still gives me all the control I need (and demand). If anybody knows a solution how to solve the above two problems, please let me know.

Yeah, I started doing this when I found out about iPhoto’s new alias feature. But then I needed to retouch a photo — and there’s no such feature in iView whereas iPhoto’s retouching is rather good. Not to speak of the other cool editing features that came with iPhoto 6. On the other hand, and unfortunately if I may say so, iView 3 has no new effects and tools to offer. So, that was yesterday when I posted the message. Granted, I don’t need to edit all my images in iPhoto, but it still ***** big time that I cannot tell the **** program to apply changes to the original. Been using Macs for more than 15 years and while I understand all the safety belts and user convenience Apple’s rigid iLife thinking is in my way to be creative and productive. At least there’s hope for iPhoto 7... after all, Steve Jobs & Co. realized with iPhoto 6 that the majority does not want copies of the originals in iPhoto plus the edited versions.

  • Iphoto to imovie to idvd--bad picture quality(Cannon powershoot sd200)

My family video I made for the year looks like really. I made one last year in movie maker on my PC and it looks great. The one I made on my mac this year is blurry and not clear. The video is fine but the photos are really bad. Specifically photos that are at a distance. I have tried different video formats and can't solve it. I want to do movies that have photos, video clips to music that can be clipped. I even stumped the teachers at my local apple store which baffled me as I would think I am not the only one with this problem. If I could make a a great quality movie on movie maker on my PC, why can't I do it on my IMAC???? I

    Hi again,
Glad to hear you are happier with the results. Scaling photos to fill the screen may cause you to lose a few heads if you are using the KB effect. As for images not filling the screen. It's a bit difficult to guess without knowing what kind of images they are.
You are correct in saying it is easier to add titles and transitions into an iPhoto slideshow. You can split the clip via the 'edit' menu in iMovie and add titles over your images. It is very simple and gives a great effect. If you plan ahead you can create your slideshows to accommodate these extras after you import it to iMovie.
    Happy editing.

the domain of sender address has to exist. at least that is true for .Mac email account users. which is what i use for mail. the log shows it's a mac.com relay server being used:

  • From good iMovie to iDVD sound track not playing (let us try this again!)

There was an earlier problem of this posted here...the question was marked ANSWERED...but didn't solve anything for most of us that replied. So let us take it out for another spin...
Created in iMovie...works perfect in iMovie 6...then SHARE with iDVD. Attempting to preview...no sound track is played/heard.
Can someone let us know what is going on...how to fix...and why we users are forced to be beta-testers for RELEASED software? This problem seem like something that SHOULD have been found, tested and corrected by release date.
This product is wasting a lot of user's time and dvd discs.
    Thanks

This product is wasting a lot of user's time and dvd discs.
Well I can help you stop wasting disks, at least! Use "Save as Disk Image" to encode the project and create a ".img" file. You can test the final encoding by mounting the .img file and playing it with DVD player in your applications folder. If this has sound, then burn it with Disk Utility.
iMovie will sometimes tolerate both 12 bit and 16 bit audio. iDVD won't - it must have 16 bit audio. Check the settings on your camcorder with the problem DV tape in it. If it is 12 bit audio, there are fixes listed here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61636
    http://danslagle.dvmix.com/mac/iMovie/audio/1001.shtml
    http://danslagle.dvmix.com/mac/iMovie/audio/1000.shtml
I know you say it plays fine in iMovie, but these fixes sometimes help files that work in iMovie but don't work right in iDVD.
If none of this applies, please let us know, and as F Shippey said, let Apple know too!

  • Red-eye not working right

I have a friend who's Macbook is acting a bit weird. In iPhoto 08 if you try to edit the red eye, after a few photos it'll starting doing one eye okay (the left) but then completely miss the other one, putting a black splotch above the eye or to the side of the eye. It's not because of aiming incorrectly.
Also although this isn't the right place to post, iMovie 06 won't let her edit the audio in timeline view. The little markers that enable you to drag the volume down aren't there when you click, for some reason. Not major things but little bugs...
All the latest updates have been installed and I've also done things like deleting the plist and even done an Archive Install for her but iPhoto red eye still doesn't work right. Haven't checked iMovie 06 yet but maybe will tomorrow.

Have you run the latest updates for the iLife 08 apps? If so reinstall iPhoto and update the the lastest, 7.1, followed by a repair of disk permissions.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Yosemite upgrade okay, iPhoto and IMovie not ok

After updating App Store displays "This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled." when trying to get iPhoto or iMovie (which no longer work).  How to I fix my apps that worked fine on 10.6?

If you're trying to update iLife or iWork apps that were installed from a purchased DVD, contact App Store customer service for a redemption code. You may be asked for the part number of the DVD.

  • Will iPhoto 6 work with an older version of iMovie and iDVD?

Some time ago, I upgraded from iLife 4 to iLife 6 and iPhoto 6 works great, but when I try to use iMovie 6 or iDVD 6 they will not work, either because the processor speed is too slow or the OSX (10.3.9) is too old. Is it possible to use iPhoto 6 (I like the editing features) with the older versions of iMovie and iDVD from iLife04.
    Thanks, Rick

    Requirements for iPhone 5:
Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:
Mac: OS X v10.6.8 or later
PC: Windows 7; Windows Vista; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 3 or later
    iTunes 10.7 or later
The highest version of iTunes you can install is 10.6.3 which will not sync with the iPhone 5.

The person I spoke with at 1-800-MY-APPLE gave me totally different info...she said the iPhone 5 would in fact sync with the older version of iTunes and that I could restore from my previous iPhone 4 backup and also bring in my music that way.  Hmmm....
I'm inclined to go by the published specs, but now I have to jump thru a bunch of hoops I wasn't expecting to.
