IPhoto to Photo - keeping your pictures accessible

We received no warning when we update our iMac to Yosemite that iPhoto was being replaced with Photo. Now all 1200 pictures are gone and iPhoto App upgrade is unavailable in US.
How do we get our pictures back?

My question was so long, so I narrowed it down
I can't open my photos via Photos, and I made sure that they are on my Capsule - so I (think) I have them. But I can't import them to Photo.
How do I open iphoto Library with Photos?

  • Using iPhoto 09 to keep your pictures organised

If you're a clean freak as I am, iPhoto 09 can help you keep your pictures folder organised.
Sorting out your albums and events inside iPhoto is easy and most of you will have it done already. However, when you browse through your Pictures folder, you'll find that the originals have been kept as they were (non corrupted and not organised).
To organise this folder so you can make the most use of Cover Flow browsing in Finder, you can opt to have the pictures folder exactly as your iPhoto events.
    This is how-
Simply highlight the event you wish to turn to a folder, go to 'file' and 'export'.
For best results, opt for 'Tiff' file format and you'll get to rename the files.
Once the exports are done for all your events, you can replace the entire pictures folder with these exported folders and- you have a completely organised picture folder to match iPhoto events.

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
If you're running a Managed library, then it's the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing
If you're running a Referenced Library, then you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing.
If you're running a Managed Library, why do you have copies of the files outside the iPhoto Library in your pictures folder?
IF you're running a Referenced Library, if you:
replace the entire pictures folder with these exported folders
then you will corrupt your Library.

I always recommend backing up the iPhoto Library file under your Pictures folder first.
You can try removing the iPhoto Preference file in your User Library folder. Close iPhoto. If you are using Snow Leopard (10.6) click on Go in the Finder menu bar. Click on Library. If you are now on Lion (10.7), you'll have to hold Option key while clicking Go to see the Library selection. Once here, find the Preferences folder. In here, look for the following:
    com.apple.iPhoto.plist
Move this file to the desktop. Start iPhoto and see what happens. If it is working, you can delete the file you moved to the desktop. This should not delete any photos, but will reset iPhoto as if it's the first time you are opening it (so your preferences you set may need to be set back).
If this doesn't work, let me know.

  • Photos keep appearing the wrong way round in slideshow!

Photos which I imported from my old macbook (running 10.4) onto my new imac (10.5.8) keep appearing the wrong way round or stretched out when I play them as part of a slideshow even though in the library they appear fine. Can anyone tell me how to fix this please?
    Thanks

Yes the plist file is important, but next time you start iPhoto it will create a brand new one.
This file records various user settings - like the background colour, for instance. If you trash it then when iPhoto re-creates it it simply returns things to the factory default settings.
Trashing the plist file is troubleshooting 101.
Also don't understand what you mean by "If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again"
By default, your iPhoto Library lives in your Pictures Folder. That's where iPhoto looks for it. If you've moved the Library - and I'm guessing you haven't - then you need to tell iphoto where you moved it to. Why? Because that's a setting recorded in the plist file.

  • How can I set a new directory path for iPhoto lib & photos?

I'd like to use an external drive to house all the iPhoto related files including the Library, data files and photos. I don't see an iPhoto Preference to set a different path. Is there another method to accomplish this? Should I edit the directory path as listed in the AlbumData.xml file?
    Thanks!

    Hi Nova,
copy the ENTIRE iPhoto Library folder (in your Pictures folder) to the external.
Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down.
At the prompt choose to open another library
Navigate to the library on the external and choose it.
Once it opens on the external this is the library iPhoto will use.
You can then delete the one on the internal or save it as backup or burn it for backup.

  • Upgraded to iphoto 11 and lost all pictures

Perhaps my question has been answered in another area, but I couldn't find it.  I, like others who have upgraded to iphoto 11 have lost all my pictures.  They are not on the new iphoto version nor in any of the picture library files.  Are they gone?  If not, where do I start looking for them?  Never had a problem like this before.  Any Advice?
    Thanks.

What system are you running and what version of iPhoto do you currenty have? How did you perform the upgrade? From an iLife disc or from the App Store?
Is there an iPhoto Library package in your Pictures fodler?  If so what is its size as shown in the Finder?
Is that size large enought to include your photos?

  • Iphoto has disappeared keeps wanting upgrade

I have no iPhoto installed and therefore cannot be upgraded. Install iPhoto

You do not have the iPhoto applicaiton in your Applications folder? Did you buy the Mini with Lion installed or did you purchase Lion from the App store and installed it?
If you don't have the iPhoto application where are you getting the message that it needs to be upgraded?  There are two items you should determine that are there or not: 1 - the application located in the Applications folder; and 2 - the iPhoto Librarty located in your Pictures folder.
Check to see if they are there or not and get back with the answers to all the questions asked.

  • Is there a way to "network" iPhoto library to keep all photos accessible on an external drive, but still have access to them online (i.e., somehow host my own cloud)?

My HD is full of photos and videos.  I want to have all-the-time access to them, but they clearly can't fit onto my HD. So, what if I (1) connected an external hard drive to my wi-fi router so I could remote access pics w/a network connection-- this way even my wife's macbook could connect to it, creating our own cloud.  Or (2) had a way to save the most recent 6mo on my locally and the rest on said external HD?  Hardware issues aside, can iPhoto do #1 or #2?  In short, is there a way to somehow host my own cloud?
Similarly, how do you keep photos accessible in iPhoto when your HD is full?  Do you just switch to Aperture and have multiple libraries?
    Thanks!!

So, what if I (1) connected an external hard drive to my wi-fi router so I could remote access pics w/a network connection-- this way even my wife's macbook could connect to it, creating our own cloud.
A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.
Or (2) had a way to save the most recent 6mo on my locally and the rest on said external HD?
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager
how do you keep photos accessible in iPhoto when your HD is full?
Move the Library to an external disk -  see above.
Do you just switch to Aperture and have multiple libraries?
Aperture uses as much space as iPhoto and both can do multiple libraries.

  • I am using iphoto 6.06 for my intel imac.  I have been trying to print pictures from iphoto and i keep getting a message that states " the picture you are trying to print is in the iphoto library"  what can i do to be able to print a photo from iphoto

I am using iphoto 6.06 for my intel imac.  I have been trying to print pictures from iphoto and i keep getting a message that states " unreadable file: the following file could not be imported.  the file is in the iphoto library folder"  also when i try to print a picture from iphoto i get a message that says "no page was selected"
not sure what happened but i can pnly print when i drop the photo onto my desktop as an 8.5 x 11 size picture and i am trying to print 4x6's

Since the new library gives you the same message log into another user account on your Mac and see if you can run iPhoto without getting that message.  If you get that message there also a reinstall of iPhoto seems indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iPhoto from the disk it came on originally and apply all available updates to it.

  • I am trying to upload my photos to iphoto. I keep receiving a error message that say "Iphoto cannot import your photos because there was a problem downloading an image" What do i Do?!

I am trying to upload my photos to iphoto. I keep receiving a error message that say "Iphoto cannot import your photos because there was a problem downloading an image" What do i Do?!

Remember: we cannot see your machine. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS.  So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Basic things like :
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For instance: 'iPhoto won't export' is best explained by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • I was editing photos in my iphotos and it says Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable on me.  I shut down my computer and when I restarted I can not access my photos, it keeps giving me

I was editing photos in my iphotos and it froze on me.  So I shut down my computer and when I restarted I now can not access them.  It says Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable.  What can I do to fix this?

What you're describing is the Finder window for your external hard drive.  When you're in iPhoto and try to edit a photo what happens?
Are you saying that the photos for your iPhoto library are located on the external HD while your library is in the Pictures folder on the boot drive? That would indicate a referenced library.  You can check to see if you're running a referenced library by checking the Advanced Preference pane in iPhoto:
So based one the Advanced preference pane in iPhoto what type of library are you running. Where is the library itself located?  It should look like this:
By default it should be located in your Users/Home/Pictures folder. However, it could be run on an external HD.

  • How can i copy iPhoto events to an external hard drive while keeping the pictures in the events together?

I have to transfer all of my events in iPhoto to an external hard drive.  When I export an event from iPhoto to the hard drive, it copies each picture but does not keep them in a named event folder.  I have over 14,000 pics in 600+ events to transfer and want to avoid doing it one event at a time.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

IPhoto can't do anything with any photo that hasn't been imported into its library. Its default behavior when you import a picture is to duplicate the picture in the iPhoto Library "package" file inside ~/Pictures. This leaves the original picture wherever it was, and it can be deleted, as it is now just taking up space. Everything you do with the picture within iPhoto from now on is recorded and saved inside the iPhoto Library "package".
When iPhoto is used in that default mode, you have what is called a "managed Library". The alternative is a "referenced Library". Photos in a referenced Library can be stored anywhere that is accessible to your computer: anywhere on your internal drive or on any number of external drives, flash drives, network drives, etc., etc. IPhoto will keep track of all those original files, and whatever organization, alterations or metadata you create for them in iPhoto will be recorded in iPhoto's Library without altering the originals in their various storage locations. BUT--and this is a BIG but--if you THEN move, rename, modify, delete or reorganize any of those originals in the Finder or using other photo editing tools, iPhoto will lose track of them, and whatever you've done with them from within iPhoto will be lost. Backing up a referenced library that is stored on more than one drive is a nightmare, and restoring one from a backup is even worse. So I strongly recommend sticking wit a managed library if you intend to use iPhoto at all.
A managed library can be stored anywhere. The default location for it is in ~/Pictures on your startup drive, but you can have one there and another on an external drive if you like, or you can just have one on the external drive and none on the startup disk -- as long as the external drive is always available when you open iPhoto. If you open the application and the external drive can't be found, iPhoto will create a new iPhoto Library in the default location and will assume that's the one you want to use, until you tell it differently.
To direct iPhoto to use a particular library, hold down the Option key while clicking iPhoto in the Dock to open it. You'll be prompted to locate and select whatever library you want iPhoto to open, wherever it may reside.
I have nine iPhoto Libraries on my internal hard drive containing over 100,000 pictures in all. Each library contains pictures that have nothing to do with the pictures in any of the other libraries. I never want to be able to see the pictures in more than one of the libraries at once -- if I did, I wouldn't have separated them. Any of the libraries could be moved to another drive if I needed more space on this one, but so far I've got enough space to store them all together. That makes backing up simpler.

  • Iphoto upgrade it says your photos will not be readable following update. Will my photos be lost?

Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iphoto after the upgrade. Some may be on the cloud but how can I save them? I haven't backed anything up and can't open iphoto to try. I/ve copied it onto my desktop but can't open that either!
Please help a t otal idiot!

Before you do anything else make a backup of your iPhoto library. Disk drives do fail regularly, and one day all your photos will be gone for sure, if you do not keep copies on a different drive.
You can simply drag theiPhoto library from your Pictures folder to a different disk to create a backup copy.
iphoto upgrade it says your photos will not be readable following update. Will my photos be lost?
You misunderstood the warning.  When you use a new version of iPhoto with yiur iPhoto library, the older iPhoto version will no longer bea ble to read the library, but naturally, the new version you are using now, will be able to show your photos.
So proceed  with the update - that is a routine warning, and is necessary, to be able to use your iPhoto library with the new version of iPhoto.

  • My iphoto 9.1 keeps crashing when I try to edit/rotate photos, any ideas?

my iphoto 9.1 keeps crashing when I try to edit/rotate photos, any ideas?
It will let me do 1 or 2 and then will show 2 photos at once overlayed and then crash...I look for updates and it says I have the most current version...
    any help will be appreciated!
    thank you, angela

First make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
