IPhoto too dark, Preview & Mail OK

Recently all my photos appear too dark when I 'magnify' them (double-click) or try to edit them in iPhoto '08. However, when I export them from iPhoto and open them in Preview or send them to Mail with iPhoto they appear fine. (The iPhoto thumbnails also appear fine even when I use the slider to enlarge them in iPhoto.)

Try this simple fix: trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)

For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

Imports from iPhoto too dark in iMovie'11

I upgraded to iLife'11 in September'11 (in preparation for switching to Lion), but until now I have not used iMovie.
Today, I tried iMovie'11. But all the imported movies and photos from iPhoto were too dark and contrasty - in particular in an existing project.
When the movies are run from iPhoto or the QuickTime Player they look perfect. I Googled this issue without finding an answer - so I was about to to post this as a question.
However, I tried using another user account and the issue disappeared. Initially I thought this might be something to do with preferences under my normal user account so I deleted a number of user .plist files for iMovie but this did not fix the issue.
Then I suspected some ColorSync issue, so I checked the System Preferences.../Displays/Color. For my normal user color was set to a modified profile: Color LCD Calibrated, whereas for the other user it was set to the default profile my MacBook: Color LCD. I reset the System Preferences.../Displays/Color to Color LCD, Quit and restarted iMovie and the issue disappeared. If the display profile is not set to the default 'Color LCD' when iMovie is launched and the iPhoto videos are imported, the issue occurs. Once the iPhoto vidoes are in the iMovie Event library, changing the display profile has not effect.
It seems therefore that for some (weird?) reason iMovie'11 uses the display colorsync profile when importing the iPhoto videos.

My color profile choices are color smart (the default), grayscale, or Adobe sRGB. My other option is just not click on Iphoto in the print window and then I have no choice. The color smart comes out a few shades darker than the screen shows. Just allowing the Iphoto defaults and not changing the settings is lighter. I just want the print to come out like what I am seeing in the Iphoto viewer. I edit it and it looks perfect, but it prints out different most of the time. When I print out a picture from preview (that I have downloaded from source other than my camera) the picture prints out just like the preview shows it, but I don't know how to edit those pictures. Installed Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6. A lot of my photos are much too dark now and the colour is not right. Any fix available? I did a backup prior to the new installs.

Check the monitor settings in the System/Displays/Color preference pane. You may have to change the color profile used or calibrate the monitor.
Also check the System/Accessibility preference pane to see if the Increase contrast checkbox is checked. If it is check it and see if there's any improvement.

No - iPhoto probbably is not crowded (it workd up to 250,000 photos) and even if it is that has no effect on the screen display

When I print out photo thru iPhoto, the result is too dark.

Hi all,
I have a problem with printing a photo via iPhoto recently.
I remember when I used iPhoto 9 to print out some of my photos but at that moment the result was pretty OK to me.
However, I don't know exatly when but I guess it could be since I upgraded to iPhoto 10...
Everytime I tried to print out some of my photos from my iPhoto library, the result is way too dark than its original color.
I am using HP Photosmart device(C410ㅁ) with fuji photo papers.
I tried to change several options like color sync or printing quality but NO use!!
Strange thing is that if I use airprint with my iPhone or iPad, color level seems to be OK.
But again, iPhone airprint doesn't give any options to manage printing quality level, it couldn't mitigate my problem, either.
Is there anyone out there who has the same or similar problem just like me?
Please share your knowledge to solve this issues.

None of my apple apps can export files, including Mail, iPhoto, Aperture and Preview.

None of my apple apps can export files, including Mail, iPhoto, Aperture and Preview. When I try to export a file from any of these programs, the app hangs for a few seconds and then does nothing, not even open an export dialogue. Same thing happens when I try to attach a file to an email. Also, maybe related and maybe not, Photoshop will crash after the splash screen. All of these app function properly when using a different User Account.
I've tried deleting my application preferences in my user library and when that didn't work, I deleted my account and then created a new one that used the same user directory, which still didn't fix anything.
I don't really want to make a new user from scratch and have to re-enter license numbers, re-calibrate monitors, recover bookmarks, contancts, etc. etc. if I don't have to, so I would be grateful for any advice.

Photos in Web gallery too dark

I just updated to the new iLife.
I tried the new Web Gallery function and the photos are too dark compared to the view in iPhoto.
Same happens with galleries in iWeb.
What's wrong?

There is a color problem when publishing pictures from iPhoto 06 and 08 (as well as when e-mailing a picture).
The problem being that the images are published with their original color profile, whatever that is. Further, if profile is missing in the image in iPhoto, the profile will be missing in the output. (BUT iPhoto displays correctly in case there is an EXIF tag specifying sRGB).
The result is that colors will not be displayed correctly on the WEB (or in e-mail clients), more or less depending on OS platform. This applies both to images and their thumbnails.

In Safari, only IMG_9465 and IMG_5182 will show a difference - since those are the only images without a color profile. However, in other MS-Windows browsers, most images will be displayed incorrectly.
Note! Most digital cameras produce images without at color profile but with an EXIF tag. In iPhoto:Preferences:Advanced choose Embed ColorSync profile, which will add a profile corresponding the EXIF tag. However, the images that you have already imported will not be fixed.
Note to Apple: Show EXIF colors space and embedded color profile in Info pane. Add command - ASSIGN profile. And in export dialog - add option Color Space.
HOW IT SHOULD BE
Images on the web (and in general also e-mails) should be published in sRGB color space (otherwise they will not be displayed correctly in browsers on the MS-Windows platforms, with the exception of Safari, viewing images with a color profile)
Images should have a color profile, in particular the sRGB images (otherwise they will not be displayed correctly on the MacOS platforms. Maybe close to correct if you have calibrated your monitor to PC-gamma)
Actually all images should have a color profile, period. If the image does not have a color profile, it is just a pile of randomly colored pixels - to be interpreted freely by any displaying device, which they do.

However, DO NOT follow this guys advice of omitting the color profile for WEB publishing because of overhead. The overhead is less than 1% of a high quality image. (I measured 0.5 - 2.5 kByte)
WORKAROUND
After exporting from iPhoto - use Photoshop and CONVERT TO PROFILE all images to sRGB color space. Save file with color profile.
Note, make sure that images without original profile are treated correctly (most often they are sRGB, check the EXIF tag with Preview application)
Note, apply also conversion to thumbnails.

Mac Printing Pics Too Dark

Weird and Complex.
Document in Word (for Mac) using images from internet (jpg, png, monochrome and colour - from various NASA, JPL and other sources). Printing Word .docx is fine. Export document to PDF (using in-built Mac OS X PDF Print system) and PDF on screen is fine. Print PDF using Mac Preview and it appears fine (colour a bit richer than .docx but OK). Print from Windows Adobe Reader, same as Mac Preview app. But print from Mac Adobe Reader (9.3.0) and the pictures come out as though the contrast is massively turned-up - monochrome pics far too dark and with a blue tint and colour pics darker and way OTT blue tint. This is destroying the pictures as the colour (and particularly blue) is very significant in the scientific pictures.
Pictures are from many different sources and jpg and png so I have not doctored them in any way - and the .docx prints fine.
When printing from Adobe Reader I have tried with Printer managing the colour and with ColourSync enabled (automatic profile) and it makes no difference. It appears just Adobe Reader on Mac that is the problem.
(As it on print only I cannot post samples to illustrate - if important I could scan the bad rint but that would probably adjust things further)
Update additional info: Pictures are either 8 bit RGB or grey scale (8 bit). Some have embedded ColoyrSync profiles (e.g. sRGB IEC61966-2.1 or Generic RGB Profile or Dot Gain 20%) some have no embedded profile - all come out badly and all affected. I tried using Photoshop to add a profile to one of the images without a profile and it made no difference. Printing from Photoshop (CS4) is fine (including photos without profiles - comes out same as printing original .docx) If I import the pages into Photoshop and print them they come out fine - just as printing the .docx - so I think there is nothing wrong with the PDF but it looks like it is the Adobe Reader printing.
Any ideas.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Check the display calibration and see if the gamma is set to 2.2 or 1.8. If it's set at 2.2 then set it to the Mac standard 1.8. See if that will lighten them up. Also check to make sure if you print one of the photos it will also match the display.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Photos suddenly way too dark?

Okay, here's the info:
-Just updated to Mavericks (works fine)
-Updated iPhoto
-When I launch iPhoto on my MacBook, all my photos look fine
-When I connect my external monitor, the photos look too dark.
-I've confirmed that the Color Profile for the monitor is properly calibrated--it's JUST iPhoto
-When I scroll between photos, they momentarily look exactly like they ought to look; but once they've fully loaded, they suddenly become extremely dark again

No--you evidently didn't understand what I said. As I indicated, EVERYTHING ELSE looks fine on the external monitor. On websites, in other photo apps, in Preview--everything looks exactly the same whether on my internal or external monitor.
It's ONLY in iPhoto that things look messed up. The photos, as they're loading, look correct; as soon as they've fully loaded up, they suddenly become so dark as to be difficult to see--everything else on the screen remains looking exactly the same. And if I drag the window from my external monitor to my internal monitor, the pictures suddenly look okay again.
But, if I view a photo in Preview, it looks the same on both monitors, even as I drag it between the two. So, again, it's ONLY iPhoto.
Incidentally, this is a new problem--as far as I can tell, it only started after installing Mavericks.

Red-eye removal too dark

Is there a way in iPhoto to lighten the color that the red-eye removal tool uses to replace the red? On many photos the black is too dark and look unnatural. I can accomplish this in photoshop but I was trying to save some time by using iPhoto.

Prints are too dark even though screen image looks fine

I have an iMac and an HP Photosmart D7360 printer. Lately, every photo I print is too dark. With older versions of iPhoto I was able to adjust the print settings (saturation, brightness, etc) from the print window and save those as a preset so my prints would match what I'm seeing on the monitor. Those settings seem to have disappeared in iPhoto '09 and I can't find a way to do that anymore. I don't understand Color Matching and some of the other settings I see, but I would like to learn how to get my photos to print the same as they look after I adjust them in iPhoto. It's mainly the darkness that's way off.

I also ran Disk Utility to repair permissions. The first time through there were maybe 100 repairs made to the AirPort Utility.app. I don't even use AirPort, so I don't understand that.
I've re-run it two more times and both times kept getting this message:

Gray scale images – too dark

CS5.5 or CC – I have experienced several times that flat grayscale imaged - corrected and nice in PhotoShop turns up much too dark when placed in InDesign.
I make sure no effect or colors are applied to the frame or picture, but still no effect.
If I force transparency on the actual spread (by placing two white items on top of each other, the topmost multiplied on the master page) then it looks correct at once.
It makes no difference if it is a flat grayscale jpg or a psd, even a psd with a white background turns out this way.
Why is that? - Do you know?

ID previews grayscales two different ways, when there's transparency on the page or Overprint Sep Preview is turned on, grayscales preview via the CMYK profile. With no transparency (or an RGB Transparency Blend space) they preview as sGray (2.2 Gamma), which is useful for screen design.
You can use your InDesign document's CMYK profile as the grayscale profile in Photoshop to get more consistent previews between ID and PS. Check this thread:

Projected images too dark

Presenting in mirrored display mode from various software including Vectorworks, iPhoto, Preview, PPT. Some projectors display images (eg in iPhoto) unreadably dark. There is usually no opportunity to test or research the projector before the presentation. Different venues, different projectors, no time to adjust - walk into the room, plug into the projector and start the presentation. Projector brightness control can help some, but images get washed out. Clicking through Mac profiles is usually not possible as the audience waits. Have not tested all, but no good ones yet. Usually in mirror mode because working in the software requires eyes on laptop - Vectorworks, mouse, tool palettes, etc.
Any tips to adjust things for good image quality while the audience looks on?
Would reboot while connected help?
Troubleshooting guides for presenters?
Any help appreciated.

I also have the same problem, which is very annoying, since all my colleagues (using a PC) show nice pictures and videos and mine are just not recognizable! The good display of the MacBook Pro can not compensate for such a flaw, as what counts is how your presentation looks like when you project it.
I have observed this problem many times with different projectors and Macs, so it is a general problem.
I changed the VGA color setting, as well as the projector contrast and brightness but it does not improve things much - objects from such as boxes, lines and text on color look normal, but any picture inserted into the presentation looks very dark and with low contrast (also true for videos). And the nice backgrounds in Keynote just do not look nice any more when you project them....
would be happy to hear some ideas or solutions if there are any

Grayscale images too dark in InDesign

Hello everyone,
Whenever I place a grayscale image in my InDesign (CS 3) document, it looks far too dark (compared to what I want and what I prepared in Photoshop).
These are the specs of the images: tif, 300 dpi, grayscale, 15% dot gain profile.
I've tinkered with the color settings in InDesign, but nothing seems to change this. Only when I export the InDesign document to pdf and choose 'Convert to destination (preserve numbers) - Working CMYK (Coated Fogra27)' and choose to 'Include destination profile' the photos in the pdf document seem okay again.
What am I doing wrong?

The Gray profile you use in Photoshop gets ignored by ID even if you save it with the grayscale. ID puts the incoming grayscale's values on the black plate unchanged. Using a CMYK profile as the gray space in PS matches ID's color managementthe grayscale previews as it would print on the black plate of a CMYK press. You get a more consistent previewbut it has no affect on output.
The only way you would get a conversion of black or grayscale values to a black+CMY color at output or export would be if the print destination CMYK profile were something other than the document CMYK profile. So if you assign Coated Fogra27 to your document, your printer would have to choose some other profile as the destination printer profile when she outputs separations for black to convert to CMYK.

Epson r 3000 print too dark

Hi there,
I am waisting papr and ink and I am getting totally sick of this.... and clueless!
Situation:
I am a Mac newbie after hundred frustrating Win years and have a MacBook Pro late 2013.
It comes with Mavericks and all updats are installed.
I have two printers: An office printer (Canon) and a photo printer - the Epson Stylus Photo R 3000
Bot work, as far as shier printing is concerned. That was easy.
Surprisingly the photos I get out of my Canon printer are not bad at all, as much as the printer can.
But the Epson is producing crap.
Trying to describe my workflow:
Open Image in RAW converter (Canon DPP), convert to Tiff (16bit)
Open Tiff in Gimp 2.8.10
Make adjustments such as cropping etc if needed, scale to paper size, setup the layout (paper format, where to print on the papr etc) - this all works.
Go into Gimp Print dialog.
Set the color management to "ColorSync" - I should mention that I did setup Gimp to use the profile of the paper manufacurer (in my case Hahnmuhle).
Print preview - excellent
Print - not a bit, but way too dark (I am guessing, but it is easily 30 - 50% too dark, or in other word at least - 1,5 to 2 EV, if not more.
I am totally frustrated and it seems that there is no help in any forum.....

Have you calibrated your monitor?
99% of the time that prints are too dark, it's because your monitor is too bright. You need to properly calibrate your monitor and adjust your photos so they look correct on the profiled monitor.
