IPhoto trashed images....

Hi, New to mac so my apologies if this is old hat...
I decided to clear out old files and things from the documents folder in the finder window, not realising that it was my photos and some itunes content... I have since discovered that (of course) the images wont show up properly in iphoto. i am able to see the thumbnails but when i enlarge them i get the '!' as discussed on other threads. After a lot of google-ing and forum reading i worked out how to send individual files back to there original place before being trashed. however i could only get this to work on individual files. I have over 10,000 files and didnt want to sit here for however long it would take to do each one so i dragged the photos to a new folder on the desktop along with the audio (also to its own folder). I have tried the Iphoto restore options on startup but this hasnt solved my problems....
Where do i now put these photo files so that they appear where iphoto is expecting them?
Ive been thinking about upgrading to 10.6.8, ive never done that kinda thing before so is it worth me copying all my photos and audio onto a hard drive and starting from scratch? if so where will i find these folders in finder?
Sam

iPhoto backs up it's database file - this will not fix your problem.
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

Wtih iPhoto 9 when the iPhoto Trash is emptied the files get moved to the Trash bin in the Dock as a second chance to change your mind.  Look in the Dock's Trash bin.

I deleted unwanted photos from my iPhoto library, emptied iPhoto trash & Finder trash... this did not free up disk space. please help!
    I have a 15-inch MacBook Pro (Late 2011) with OS X Mavericks 10.9.5
Last week, my 500 GB Harddrive had 120 GB free space. I was feeling crumby and decided to make productive use of taking a day off to lounge around. I snuggled up with my laptop and dedicated hours to meticulously combing through my iPhoto Library. I had 13,000 pictures, and I got rid of those I didn't want. Having said "sayōnara" to about 6,500 pictures, I then emptied the iPhoto trash and the Finder trash. I took delight in the iconic paper crumpling sound of them vanishing into the digital void.
Everything seemed perfect: the photos I loved were still there, the photos I loathed were gone, both trashes were beautifully empty. Having thrown away all of those awful, boring, and unflattering images of poorly light lunches and selfies gone wrong, my iPhoto library was half the size as before! I felt renewed, a little lighter, somehow more free, and I expected my hard drive to be a bit different to.
I eagerly checked my storage stats. My heart sank to see that my 120 GB of free space, was still only 120 GB of free space. I restarted my MacBook; this did not help. I restarted it the next day; this also did not help. It's been 5 days and the hard drive still has 120 GB free space. This is not an emergency and it will probably be a good while before I clutter my laptop to the brim. Yet while I am glad I don't have to see cringeworthy pictures of my ex's unmentionables every time I'm showing off things I do want to remember, I'm still disappointed and now obsessed with solving this mystery.
What is going on? I don't see them, so where are they hiding? How do I get the free space I should have earned from throwing away 1,000's of photos?!

    Thank you, Terence!
Yes, I only emptied the trash when it was really full, once I waited until the trash cans contained 2,600 photos and then I emptied them - Oooops! In the future, I'll keep in mind your suggestion of deleting less than 100 photos at a time.
I downloaded the iPhoto Library Manager and used it to rebuild my iPhoto. After a few hours of rebuilding, it generated a new copy of my iPhoto Library. This versions was nearly identical to the original (it was missing 5 photos and was therefore only 5 mb smaller). I guess my Library wasn't defective.
I checked my storage stats, and interestingly, using iPhoto Library Manager did help with the problem that developed after I re-indexed my hard drive. My hard drive is able to properly recognize data categories again, instead of listing almost everything as "Other". Understandably, my free disk space changed from 120 GB to about 60 GB, because my hard drive now contained a second copy of my iPhoto Library as well as iPhoto Library Manager. It seemed like all I needed to do was throw these away, but when I emptied the trash, my problem was not solved. My Hard drive now looked like this:
It appears to me that when I empty the trash, the things I throw away are just hanging around as backups instead of leaving! I went into System Preferences and turned of my time machine OFF. Now my hard drive looks likes this:
The back ups of the iPhoto files, and the program which I deleted, are still on my hard drive some where but now they are listed as "Other" instead of "Backups". Do you know where they might be and how I can delete them for good?

  • If I delete my iphoto trash, will a folder with those pictures be okay on my desktop?

So i have a folder on my desktop on my macbook pro that has pictures in it. They are also in my iphoto trash and i know that the only way to empty my trash is to empty the entire iphoto trash. I was just wondering if I want to keep those photos in the file on my desktop but not in the trash, can I delete the trash and they will still be in the folder? let me know thanks!

iPhoot will not delete any photos it does not manage. If those images are in a folder on your desktop then deleting from iPhoto will not affect them in any way.

  • Cannot empty iPhoto trash can why ?

i have 70000 images in trash can but cannot empty iPhoto trash can why ?

If that 70,000 is your entire library just drag the library to the Trash bin in the Dock and empty it.
However, if you have other photos in the library that you want to keep the try this:  go into iPhoto's General preference pane and uncheck the Show item counts checkbox:
and then try emptying the iPhoto Trash bin again.
If that fails and you don't use the Rating stars you can do the following: select all of the photos in the trash and Control-click to bringup the contextual menu.  There will be the 5 stars for the ratings.  Select either 5 or 1 to apply that rating to the photos.
Next create a smart album with the criteria:
selecting the number of start you applied to those in the Trash bin.
Move the photos from the Trash bin to the Library and the Smart Album will immediately be populated with those photos.
You can now select about 100 photos or so at a time and use the Command+Option+Delete key combination to move them back to the Trash bin and empty it.  Repeat with groups of about 100 or so photos till they are all deleted. Then delete the Trash bin in the Dock to completely remove them from your hard drive.

  • IPhoto stalls attempting to empty iPhoto trash

iPhoto 9.3.2, OSX 10.7.4 on Mac Pro with 4x2TB internal drives RAID0.
In attempting to empty the iPhoto trash containing 3,493 photos, the "Emptying iPhoto Trash..." progress bar rapidly proceeds to 1% of the end, then stalls.  No activity for hours.  Forced Quit and repeated attempt with same result.  There is plenty of empty space on disks.  Total of over 30,000 photos in this iPhoto library.  I can't find a work-around to empty the trash.

iPhoto will not empty a trash with that many images in it, and attempting to do so may damage the database.
Experienced users suggest trashing in batches of about 100 or so.

  • IPhoto Trash won't empty

I just realized my iPhoto Trash won't empty. When I click on it the software crashes. There are about 800 images in the Trash. I tried restoring about half of them to their albums and then emptying Trash -- but same thing -- Crash. Any suggestions? Thanks, Dan
    G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

In iPhoto Preferences turn off "Show Item Counts." Quit iPhoto. Launch iPhoto. Empty Trash. Quit again. Launch again and see if the Trash emptied properly.

  • IPhoto sample images

I am new to iPhoto so pls bear with me.  I seem to have these sample photos which I believe come from iPhoto, (soccer photos, AZ vacation photos.....), and I want to delete them.  The only problem is, I can't find them to nuke em.  Can somebody help?

    Your question is not clear
There are no "sample" images in iPhoto
The only way to delete any image in iPhoto is to select it in iPhoto and drag it to the iPhoto thasr(or press the delete key) and then empty the iPhoto trash and the system trash
As to how to fine the photo you only find the photo using iPhoto and you only manage the photos in iPhoto using iPhoto

Yes, some perople have seen this. Options:
    1. Try reinstall iPhoto. (see below)
    2. If you have access to another Mac with the same version of the OS, try and copy that framework over
    3. Reinstall the OS.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • Emptying iphoto trash/facebook

Can I empty my iphoto trash without deleting any pictures on my facebook?
To clarify:  I have a homedaycare, and every day, I post pictures of the kids/activities/crafts to albums on facebook so the parents can see what we're up to.
I also post the pics to my daycare blog.
Often, once I've shared the pics on facebook, I delete them from my iphoto library as I really don't need to keep these pictures for myself.
As a result, my iphoto trash has hundreds (no, thousands) of images in it!  I've been hesitant to empty my iphoto trash because I've heard that if I do, all of those pictures will be deleted from my facebook albums.
    Is this true?
How can I empty the iphoto trash without losing the pictures that are on my facebook?
I've also heard that these pictures will be deleted from my blog as well, but I can't see why they would be, as my blog isn't "synched" with iphoto.

What if I un-sync f/b and iphoto.  I usually don't upload directly from iphoto.  Most often I upload FROM the facebook page (selecting images on my computer).  If I've uploaded that way, am I ok to emptly the trash?  Is it just the pics I've uploaded through the SHARE button in iphoto that would be affected?

  • Iphoto 09 will freeze when I try to delete the iphoto trash can.

The iphoto trash can has has over 42,000 pictures in it and I know that it is taking up space, but when I click on the delete the iphoto trash can, it freezes and the the color wheel spins for ever. I have to force quit iphoto which states that is is not responding. Please help...
    Louie

Don't force quit it, just let it finish, even if that means waiting a couple of hours. I'm seeing the same behaviour with just a few hundred images in the trash: beachball, not responding. But after a couple of minutes, it eventually finishes. So for 42,000 images, it might take a few hours. I suspect the delay is from deleting face information from the faces database. The faces database is very complex, storing not just your actual tagged faces, but also very detailed scan results.

  • IPhoto trash

I regularly empty my iPhoto trash, yet still it says there are nearly 16000 photos in there inspite of not being able to see them or access them. Is this data taking up valuable storage space and how do I delete them?

Thank you very much for your reply,
    ILife 11 - iphoto version 9.2.3
The images are deleted however the tally of images - ie. the figure next to the empty trash button (in the iPhoto trash file) is 15864 and increments each time I delete further images.
I am assuming that the data is still stored but cant find where??

For IPhoto '09, version 8.1.2:  If I permanently delete the photos from the IPhoto trash, will any of the duplicate photos in the IPhoto library also be deleted?

    1. There are no duplicates in iPhoto unless you imported two or more copies of the same photo
    2. If you are useing the defaults in iPhoto and delete a photo from an event and empty the iPhoto trash and the system trash all versions of the photo will be gone
