Iphoto troubles, moving, editing, sorting, everything..

Hi everyone, I just spent 4 hrs reading through most of the articles in here to find a solution. I am pretty convinced that I am the first one in here with this problem, unless I missed out a few post. I apologize if you have answered this problem before and you would be repeating yourself. I would like to thank everyone who will be answering or even reading my post.
Like a lot of them, I am new to MAC. But with the help of a good friend of mine, I am pretty savvy with this machine, however, iphoto is this naughty little fella that I just cant crack.

I have in "advance", unchecked "copy files to library" so when I import photos from my folders, it will only create a link in iphoto library, so it will not take up extra space on my hdd. Is this a good move? There is a good explanation why I choose not to keep the files inside iphoto library, because when I do keep them inside iphoto library and edit the folders or the file name, these photos will be missing from iphoto because their file names have been changed (unlike itunes where you can change the location and rename it a million times, itunes will still know where it is). And even if I do not mind this, when I do import the files which I have renamed back to iphoto, it says "cannot import into library because the folder is already in iphoto library folder". Because of this, I have to relocate the folder from "original" to some other location and then import it into iphoto library. its so troublesome but I have since adopted this trouble as a routine. Question: how do I rename the photos without having to have to import them into iphoto again and without having to move them to another location? the videos too, because I use iphoto to sort my videos as well and I tend to rename my videos too.

I have been using iweb to update my photos on my server for months. One of the "photo" template has a fix frame where all I need to do is to drag photos from "media" into the frame and it will do the rest of the sizing for me. It has worked fine for me but just now when I wanted to add more pictures, I couldnt. Everytime I drag a photo from "media" it will just add on the page as the name of the photo like "dscn1000" as font instead of the photo. I tried dragging other photos and I notice only certain ones work and most of them doesnt work. I tried looking into iphoto to see if its because of the source file and I still cant figure it out. And while I was at that, I found out another very mysterious thing, see my next question.
C>>
Like I mentioned above, I have unchecked "copy files to library when importing" in iphoto's preferences. Hence, there are only links of the photos in iphoto library folder. If I am not wrong, every folder that I import into library, there will be a folder with the same name created in "original" and all the photos will have a little arrow stating that this is linked from another location. But when I was checking for my problem above (Problem B), I notice that out of the 10 albums I have imported into iphoto, only 6 of them have folders created in iphoto library "orignal" folder. The rest are not there and yet I see them in my iphoto.
Gosh, I really hope you guys understand what I am saying in here coz its not easy trying to put in words these problems. If you do not understand me, pls ask me questions so I can explain it further. Any help is appreciated.

Listen to TD - he's usually right.
I'll add my 2¢, since you asked for opinions.
First, you can't crack iPhoto because you're fighting against the way it is designed to work. iPhoto is a stubborn fella, you need to play by his rules or he throws tantrums.
A>>
My advice to you is to check that option and let iPhoto keep the files in its library. Why? Because when you don't it is very easy to break the link between the files and the database. If you move or rename files iPhoto won't be able to find them, regardless of whether the files are in the iPhoto library. At least with them in the library, they are accessible (provided you play by the rules) and organized. In addition, this makes it possible and easy to move or back up your entire library simply by moving or copying the iPhoto library folder. The alias mode complicates things - keep it simple, see how it's intended to work, and consider the alias mode as an option for expert iPhoto users (like Old Toad).
As TD said, if disc space is an issue simply keep the whole iPhoto library on an external drive. Once you put it there and point iPhoto to it, it functions exactly the same as on the boot drive as long as the external is mounted.
Question: how do I rename the photos without having to have to import them into iphoto again and without having to move them to another location?>>>
Answer: You can't. Once a file is in iPhoto it stays there with the name it had upon import. Using Finder to rename files will break the link to the iPhoto database. Continue to do this your way and you may even see your entire database file become corrupt. In that case your photos would be safe but you would have to start over with a new library. (I suggest you do that now.)
TIP: Many users prefer to import from the camera via Image Capture. Create a folder anywhere NOT in the iPhoto library and upload to the hard drive. Then rename your files in Finder to your heart's content. Once you are happy with the file names, import that folder into iPhoto and you will get a Film Roll named after that folder containing your photos with their new file names. You can then either keep the original folder for backup purposes or trash it -- IF you let iPhoto store your photos in its library.

In it she explains her method of uploading from the camera to Image Browser, then importing into iPhoto. She has a very organized way of storing files for backup until she has enough to burn a DVD.

I don't use iWeb, so can't answer specifically what is happening. I do suspect that the reasons most of your photos don't work is because your system for using iPhoto just dosen't work. It just doesn't do well with all the renaming, moving, in Finder, then reimporting to try to repair the damage. Clearly some of the damage hasn't been repaired.
C>>
This observation, combined with the way you describe your workflow in section A, suggests to me that you haven't re-established the links to some of your rolls. Let's say I rename a roll in Finder, and lose its link to iPhoto. I can't just reimport the roll. After moving it out of iPhoto I have to delete the broken images in the iPhoto window from within the application. When iPhoto has forgotten about them entirely, I can then import them back into iPhoto. Skip this step, and your second attempt to import the same files will fail.
iPhoto is a database application, not a file browser. Some people just want a file browser, and you may be one of them. But if you enjoy iPhoto's other capabilities, then why not give it a try the easy way? I suggest you begin with a fresh iPhoto library. Find your originals, import them in with the copy to library choice ON, and organize from within the application. TD has given you the ways to locate your photos once they are stored in the library. Look at this screen shot of how an iPhoto library is meant to be organized: http://homepage.mac.com/loridilo/.Public/iPhoto6.jpg [Again thanks to lori!] The application will work much more smoothly when you work with it and not against it.
If you have any questions specifically for me, I'll be happy to answer. Otherwise, I've used up my 2¢ worth.

  • I am having trouble moving files from iPhoto to a thumb drive.  Sometimes I can move 20 photos next time I can only move 2 photos or 0---this is during the same session.  I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.  Can someone please help?

I am having trouble moving files from iphoto to a thumb drive.  During the same session sometime I can move 10 photos at a time, the next time I can only move one photo and sometime no photos will move.  I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.  I was using a MacBook Pro and had no problems like this.  I then upgraded to the MacBook Pro with Retina Vision and this is the computer I am having problems with.  Can anyone please give me a suggestion in how to fix this problem. THANK YOU.

iPhoto problems should be posted in their forums.
I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.
Needs clarification.  You upload from your computer to the internet & download from a website/internet to your computer.  So which are you trying to do?  Either way, sounds like a browser issue.  You need to post in the forum of whichever browser you are using.

  • IPhoto Library moved to External Hard Drive and need help moving library

Hi - Recently I had my hard drive replaced. I purchased Disk Warrior and moved all files to my external hard drive. Now that my hard drive has been replaced, I'm having trouble moving all my photos back to iPhoto. Nearly all of my 8K+ photos are blurry after I import and enlarge. The ones that are fine have dimensions of or more than 1K x 1K. The digital photos that I moved and are blurry when enlarged are 340x360 (hundreds range). How can I correct?
    Thanks so much in advance.
    Audra

I think I might need to back up ---- So I had a failing hard drive, went to Apple and purchased Disk Warrior. Installed Disk Warrior and tried to recover everything from my hard drive. Then all that was recovered was supposedly moved to my external hard drive. I have now received my computer back with the new hard drive. I plug in my external hard drive and have been trying to move all my images from the external hard drive to iphoto. In both places (external HD and when the photos are imported), the image is at the lower dimensions.
    Thanks for your time.

  • In IPhoto I have edited the order of my images. When I play the album on Apple TV the order reverts back to the time stamp. Any suggestions on how to get the images to play on my TV in the order I want?

Apple TV won't play back my album images from IPhoto in the edited order I want. The order seems to revert back to the time stamp for the photos. I have combined the photos from 3 different cameras and they had slightly different clock settings. I am working on an edited presentation of about 1500 Pics from travels in Turkey this summer and sometimes the order makes more sense if I move some of the images quite a ways. Is there any solution short of changing the time stamp on every single image?

Using the 'adjust date and time' setting is the best way to syncronise the photos from all your cameras. However as you say this merely puts them all in the correct order chronologically.
If there are photos that you feel would be best somewhere else in an album other than in date order, it may depend on how many as to which is the best option for you. If it's only a few you may wish to adjust the date/time on these few manually so they fit in with the rest where you want them.
If you have a lot of photos you want in a different order to the order by date, or you really don't care about what date/time is used and just want them in the order you want them in, then 'batch change' is the best option.
From the view menu, select 'sort photos - manually', drag the photos around until they are in the order you want, select all of them. Now select the batch change option and choose 'Date' from the 'set' options, type in a date and time for the first photo, it can be anything but it's probably a good idea to choose something close to the original date, then check the box 'Add'. You can keep the value set at 1 minute or enter any value you want, it may be more realistic to divide the length of your holiday by the number of photos you have to calculate a value, but it really isn't necessary. Clicking OK will adjust all the dates without affecting the title or description and the photos will now show on the Apple TV in that order.
Just to be sure iTunes is updated, you may want to go to the advanced menu/choose photos to share in iTunes and deselect the album, apply, reselect the album and apply again.

  • How can I get iPhoto to make edits possible?

I just received my new MacBook Pro and transferred all my data (including all my photos) from my old one. While I use Photoshop for more complex editing, I've never had a problem using the older versions of iPhoto for basic edits (e.g. rotating, cropping, basic color correction, etc.) Now, with iPhoto 11, NONE of those functions work. If I pull up a pic and open the edit screens, I see the buttons for these functions, but when I click on them nothing happens. This happens for every photo I pull up in any album. This is driving me nuts, nuts, nuts...please help!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the fix below:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Then check to see if the editing tools are working.

  • IPhoto crashing during edit with SL/GMA950

Since upgrading a MacBook2,1 (Core 2 Duo, GMA950) to SL/iPhoto 09 it consistently has problems while performing almost any image adjustments in full screen edit mode; hanging, showing large bars of vertical 'noise' and sometimes leaving the screen blank forcing a restart. Each time this happens there is the same 'problem' reported in the logs:
[0x0-0xf00f].com.apple.iPhoto[124] CoreImage: CIGaussianReduction4: fragment program failed to compile
[0x0-0xf00f].com.apple.iPhoto[124] CoreImage: CIGaussianReduction4: falling back to software
[0x0-0xf00f].com.apple.iPhoto[124] CoreImage: CIGaussianReduction4: fragment program failed to compile
[0x0-0xf00f].com.apple.iPhoto[124] CoreImage: CIGaussianReduction4: falling back to software
My understanding is that this is referring to the interface between CoreImage and the 'GPU' where LLVM tries to determine on the fly whether to use the GPU or emulate the OpenGL functions in software. The fact that it can't compile is odd, the only thing that I can think of is that maybe there is a JIT cache somewhere that is corrupted but I have no idea how that can be reset.
Anyone any ideas on this? Anyone else seen this (which is making iPhoto a bit unusable)?
I have tried the obvious already
    1) SMC reset, PRAM reset
    2) Reinstalled iPhoto & SL & rebuilt iPhoto library/thumbnails
    3) Deleted the user/Library/Cache directory
    Thanks in advance

Upgrading to iLife 11 (iPhoto 9.0) appears to have resolved the problem. It makes much heavier use of GPU acceleration so presumably the code in this area has been changed.
It's not a bad upgrade even if it is only UI changes though beware there are issues upgrading iPhoto 8 databases (make sure everything is backup up and they have been updated to the very latest version of iPhoto 8 before upgrading to 9.0). 1 out of of my databases would not update.

There seems to be a lag with the Mail.app in regards to synchronization with messages stored on the server even when selecting "Automatically synchronize changed mailboxes" under the Advanced tab for the account preferences.
As a test, after doing the same try taking the account offline and then online and or quit and re-launch the Mail.app.
Check if the transferred message is still in both locations on the server.

  • IPhoto - Please Help Problem Sorting Photos

    Hi everyone,
I imported pictures into iphoto that had been taken with 2 different cameras, but all have similar dates within a certain time span. I imported my own pictures on the 6. October and the other ones on the 8th October. Although the pictures have both been taken in September, iPhoto puts my photos in the October section and uses this as "date taken" and the other photos are sorted correctly.
The Background is that I would like to do a slide show and it is very complicated to switch between the pictures and they are around 1000 in number.
By the way, does anyone know an easy way to adopt the Ken Burns effect of iphoto and then edit text and a audio track in imovie? I was used to Magix Video, which is really simple in handling and now on the mac I think imovie takes such a long time for rendering.
    Thank you for your answers.
    Macbook Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Macbook 2 Ghz 1,25 GB Ram 60 GB HD   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Yes, you can take advantage of the Ken Burns effect for a slideshow in iMovie. Just export the slideshow you made in iPhoto, and then it will be a Quicktime movie that you can import into iMovie to add audio and text to it.
If I understand correctly, your photos show a date in October instead of September. If you select all of the photos whose date you want to change, you can apply the date change to all of them at once. You can do this in the "information" window that toggles in the lower left corner of iPhoto.
Please let me know if this helps or if you need further assistance.

  • Having trouble moving show to Ipod Classic

For some reason, I'm having trouble moving a purchased TV Show (Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog) to my Ipod. Everything else has transferred fine, but this just stays in Itunes and wont go anywhere. There's more than plenty of room available, so I'm not sure what the deal is. Any suggestions?

Hey, I had the same problem too, so I changed to option to sync all episodes instead. All 3 episodes are up, but they can't play on my iPod (iPod classic 5th gen 30gb). When I click on an episode to play it goes into the movie screen like any other movie but the screen just remains black for more than a few minutes. Anything I do to get it going just brings me back to the list of episode pages.
I've tried removing the show and re-syncing my iPod but to no avail. Can anyone help?!! I really want to watch Dr. Horrible!

  • Can't open iphoto file to edit in Elements 10 even though external editor is set

Right clicking on iphoto file, selecting "edit in external editor" resullts in spinning beach ball.  Each attempt at opening a file initiates a reopening of Elements even though it is already opened.

Can you open images normally in Photoshop Elements?  I would recommend including this information as well as which verson of iPhoto and Mac OS you are using to the Photoshop Elements forum.  It might also possibly be a problem with iPhoto but the users in the Photoshop Elements forum should better be able to determine where the problem lies.

  • I have PC with Windows 7 and iPad. My music in iTunes on PC is available under Music on iPad but having trouble moving music to i-Cloud. I suceed in moving the music to iCloud on PC but when I look at iPad music still on device and not in iCloud. Help?

I am a beginner using Apple software, so please bare with me.
I am having trouble moving music from the iPad to iCloud in order to save space in the device.
I realise that in order to store music not purchased on iTunes store can only be stored in iCloud if you subscribe to iTunes Match which I have done.
Appears that moving music from iTunes on my PC to iCloud is successful by deleting song or album in iTunes library and than click on "Keep song" instead of sending to recycle bin. After this has been done the Cloud Icon appears on the album or against the song. However when I then look at Music on the iPad the album or song have not been moved to iCloud. I have tried syncronising with cable connected between PC and iPad. After that has been done the message is that sync was successful bujt still music has not been moved into the Cloud.
Can anybody help? What am I doing wrong? Is there a way to move the music to the cloud working on the iPad only (without trying to use the PC to move the music to the cloud)?

You can only add music to iTunes Match from your iTunes library on your computer, not from your iOS device.  If you have music on your iPad that is not on your computer, you'll have to import it to your iTunes library on your computer to add it to iTunes Match.
Music purchased from the iTunes store can be imported directly to your iTunes library by authorizing your computer for the Apple ID(s) used to purchase the music (in Store>Authorize This Computer), then connecting the iPad to your computer, opening iTunes and going to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.  Music from other sources will require using 3rd party software to transfer to your computer, such as Touch Copy.

  • How can you take a photo from one event and put it in another, without dragging to desktop and dragging back into iPhoto and moving it to the event folder I want it in.

As the title says I need help on how to take a photo from one event and put it in another, without dragging to desktop and dragging back into iPhoto and moving it to the event folder I want it in. Right now when I want to move a picture from one event to another I drag it to my desktop then delete it from iPhoto then I drag it back into iPhoto and put where I want it.An example would be taking a photo from the Christmas event and add it to a specific person event.  Can I do that within the events section without all the dragging. Also is there anyway I can remove duplicates from iPhoto without going through each and every file. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Apple doesn't make it easy to do what you want.  However, here's how I do it.
Select the photo you want to move and create a new Event for it via the Event ➙ Create Event menu option.
In the Event mode select the new Event with the one picture and drag it onto the Event you want to move the photo to.

You are probably choosing the obvious file rather than the correct file as the PSE editor. The actual editor is hidden away inside the Support Files folder. The PSE file at the top level of the PSE folder in Applications is just an alias for the welcome screen and what you're describing is exactly what happens when you choose that. You want this one:
