IPhoto Troubleshoot - Lost File Upon Photo Edit

Hello!
I'm having trouble in iPhoto.
Each time I finish editing an image and return to the album or event screen, then click on the photo again, the area that should show the image goes black. When I right click on "Show File" the file is shown with a missing thumbnail and the size is zero bytes. So, it looks like iPhoto loses track of the file contents somewhere during the photo editing or saving process.
iPhoto works normally in all other ways. I have the '09 version (8.1.2). I've though about dropping the 15 bucks to get the new version but the reviews said that it has a reputation for being buggy.
I'm running this on a 2010 MacBook Pro 13" on OSX Lion 10.7.2.
Anyone have any ideas, thoughts, or advice? Thanks in advance!
-Timothy

I tried it, and when the screen would typically go blank, the program crashed. This is what the report said.
It almost seems as though the edit is 'too much' for the processor to handle. The strange part is that this problem is very inconsistent- sometimes the photo will edit and save flawlessly. Other times, iPhoto will attempt to save the edit and fail. You can see the attempt through pixelated and stretched versions of the photo for a brief moment before the image goes blank.
Thanks for your help!

Perhaps you have more than one iPhoto Library?
What happens if you hold down the option key while lauching iPhoto?
Are you presented with more than one Library to choose from?

  • How to restore iphoto library lost files

I need to know how to restore my iphoto library. I was trying to backup my photos using an external harddrive. I clicked the option key then opened iphoto. I tried to  send the photos to my ext harddrive but could not. I even tried to import my photos to files on my desktop, then drag and drop, but could not. I've done this before but now it won't work. Now when I can't open iphoto, here is nothing in my library. I had 10,000 pictures in labeled albums. Now nothing. How do I get the option mode off? The iphoto library has a foggy-gray look to it and I can't click on anything. My photos are still in my picture folders in my finder.
    Thanks for any help!

1 - Never make any changes of any dsort to the structure or content of the iphoto library - and it is best to jsut stay out of it as there are no user servicable parts in it
2 - to restore your iPhoto library you must first have a backup of it - do you? Time Machine or other backup program? or an exact copy of the iPhoto library?
    3 -
I clicked the option key then opened iphoto. I tried to  send the photos to my ext harddrive but could not.
exactly what did you do? this makes no sense - option launching iPhoto does not give you any option to send anything anyplace - it does give you the capability to select a different library.  If you did that then option launch iPhoto again, use the select library options and select your iPhoto library on your main drive

  • Iphoto '11 lost my iPhone photo download

    Hi,
latest iPhoto 9.4.3.   Library in the 'Shared' folder shared with my wife's account.
    OSX Lion 10.7.5
Opened iPhoto and proceeded to download the photos off of my iPhone5.
When it was done, I selected "Delete photos" as usual.
    Result:  photos GONE on iPhoto.
iPhoto seems to have downloaded the info and created the thumbnails, but the masters are GONE.
    a.  looked in the iPhoto Library  ('reveal package contents') and the Masters are NOT there
nor are they in any of the directory folders in the iPhoto Library
    b.  Spotlight doesn't find the files.
    c.  'Find' (#F)  does not find the files
    d.  not in my Trash
    e.  not in iPhoto Trash  or Recovered Folder
    f.  'Repairing Permissions' or "repairing Database' did not work.  Thumbs and metadata there, original files not.
    g.  did the same via Aperture  (which uses iPhoto library) with same results
    h.  obviously no longer on my iPhone5
So what the **** did iPhoto do with the Masters ??  send them into the ether ?  is there some hidden cache directory somwwhere where they might be found ?
Therre doesn't seem to be much point in a total database rebuild since the photos appear nowhere to be found within the iPhoto Library.
In the past year or so iPhoto has been an unmitigated DISASTER.   it was working so well for so long, and then something really bad happened.
It no longer plays nice with iMovie.  It loses photos.  and now this.
If you have any ideas about what if anything I could try, do let me know.  else its time to ditch this piece of junk

Check your iPhoto Preferences > Advanced tab. Is the option "Importing > Copy items into the iPhoto Library" still enabled? If not, iPhoto will not have stored the photos in the Masters folder in the Library, but in your "Pictures" folder.
    g.  did the same via Aperture  (which uses iPhoto library) with same results
Since you have Aperture, have you tried to select one of your thumbnails from the recent import and and use the command "File > Locate referenced files"? This should show you a panel, where you can check the path to the missing original file, it will be shown below the thumbnail in the reconnect panel.
Then look into the folder you are seeing there, and check, if the files are really missing.
If you can find the photos, you can use the lower part of the window to reconnect the missing original image files.
    1.  checked the iPhoto Preferences and yes, the "Importing--> Copy Items" is still enabled as it always has been.
Moreover, the files are not in the Pictures folder.   Spotlight, Find, etc cannot locate them
    2.  Tried the Aperture  'File-->Locate Referenced Files" and it too says "the selection doesn't have any referenced files"
so it appears the Masters are gonzo.     that is BAD, VERY BAD for a photo database program to disappear photos like that

  • Iphoto 11  lost all my photos

    help !!
i installed an automatic update for iphoto and now it won't work, keeps freezing and when it opens tells me i only have 1 photo which was the last one i put in - clicking events shows only 1 photo - i had all my grandchildren's birth pictures and every thing on here - this is not something i expected of a mac this is typical of microstuft which is the reason i choose to get a man but now...***

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I have set up photoshop elements as external editor in iPhoto but I cannot get the edited photo to open in iPhoto. When I save the photo Elements asks where do I want to save it and iPhoto is not an option.

I have set up Photoshop Elements11 as the External Editor in iPhoto just as Terence Devlin said. However when I save the edited photo it does not appear in iPhoto. A drop down menu asks where I want to save the photo and I do not know what to choose. Also should I choose, "save" or "save as"? I should be really grateful for your help.

I suggest opening iPhoto and reverting back to iPhoto in the Preferences for photo editing. Quit iPhoto. Restart your Mac for good measure. Open iPhoto and again choose Photoshop Elements in Preferences as the editing app.
As far as editing, I don't have PE, but I have another editing app form the Mac App Store, ColorStrokes. I have been experimenting with using it for editing iPhoto photos and it works flawlessly. After setting ColorStroke as the editing app, I open a photo in iPhoto and click the Edit button in the menu bar below the photo. Color Stoke immediately opens with the photo and I complete my editing. When I have finished editing I choose to Save the photo, leave the name the same and agree to replace the iPhoto photo of the same name. I quit ColorStroke and the photo in iPhoto now has all of my edits from ColorStroke.
Should I decide that I prefer the original photo, I open the photo in iPhoto and choose Revert to Original in the Photos pulldown menu.

  • Photo Editing on a MBP?

I'm coming from the Windows world where I used a number of photo editing programs. I tend to go for the simpler, less sophisticated programs because I don't have a lot of time to spend learning how to use them. I really only need basic editing (cropping, light adjustments, resizing). I know that the Mac comes with iPhoto, but since I know nothing about it, I'm just wondering if it's a pretty good basic editing tool.

It is a pretty good editing tool. Many consider it better than Picassa. And for that which it can't do there are tools like GraphicConverter, Photoshop Elements, Photoshop, MacGimp, Apple's own Aperture, and many others you can find on http://www.macupdate.com/ and http://www.versiontracker.com/
A word of caution about iPhoto. It manages the library of photos in the file system's Pictures folder, and you won't want to edit it directly from the file system. However, if you integrate iPhoto so it launches another photo editing program when you want to edit photos it will automatically update the iPhoto library when you save the file in the other program. Just don't manage the photos in the Pictures folder directly on the Finder.

  • Can't edit imported files; iPhoto asks for file import upon each launch

    Hi,
My hard drive recently went bad and I lost all photos (didn't back up...I've learned my lesson). An authorized repair shop replaced the drive and installed 10.5.2.
I just tried to import 150 new photos from my camera. After importing from the camera, iPhoto said all files were imported successfully. I was trying to create room on my memory card, so when asked if I wanted to delete the originals, I said yes. (I was planning on backing up the photos just as soon as I got them onto my drive).
I see them as thumbnails, etc., but I get the grey/black exclamation graphic if I try to edit. Fullscreen gets me a black screen, that's it. Each time I launch iPhoto, it says that it detects 150 pictures not imported. Would I like to import? I choose yes, but the same problem persists.
When I view each thumbnail, the reported sizes average about 2 mb, so it seems that the real photos are somewhere. I just don't know where. As a last resort, I guess I could try to do screen captures of the thumbnails, but that'll take forever, and I really want these originals back.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Are you running a Managed Library or a Referenced Library?
If you're running a Managed library, then it's the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing
If you're running a Referenced Library, then you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing.
If you're running a managed library is sounds very like a damaged database file to me.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Anyone know why my iPhoto program won't save my edited photos?

I can see them in the album and in the "events" in my library. When I open it that far, I see all of my edited photos, but when I open them individually, they are unedited unless I click on the "EDIT" button....THEN, they show up edited! They are also unedited when I post them on Facebook or if I save them to my desktop or when I actually have one printed! THAT tells me that for some reason, iPhoto is not automatically saving my editing like it says it does! And....I HATE the fact that there is no "SAVE" or "SAVE CHANGES" button!!! Not all of them, but the ones that I recently took in jpeg format and not raw. Bummed! Please help! Thank you! When I first got my camera, I didn't know about the "RAW" setting so I was using JPEG back then and it worked. Why all of a sudden is it not???....FRUSTRATED.

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • I lost all my Photo's in IPHOTO

    Hello,
I lost all my Photo's in IPHOTO today
I will try to outline what I have done. Some months ago I took old photograph-files of my windows computer by means of an external hard disk. Afterwards I had the following experience: each time that I started Iphoto I received a note "13 photos have been found in the iPhoto Library that were not imported." Then it tells me "The photos have been placed in a folder. The folder is stored in my file/images/library/no..... it counts up every day. Today it reached no. 56. I tried to throw away all that garbage. By means of finder I have gone to the images/library and saw those 56 items listed there. I wanted them all thrown away at the same time. I have slid them then all 56 in each other, then you hear a sound of 'plik' every time and when done I dragged to the dustbin. As I returned to Iphoto, everything was empty 244 folders with over 28,000 photo' s. The files are all grey. If I select a photo then I get a light grey screen with !-sign. What remaine are the file-names and the numbering of the 28,000 photo's. So I have 28,000 grey screens but without the photo's that correspond with them.
I tried to import Photo's with the Iphoto- archive-import button from the library in finder. But there were only the 56 files with the 13 photo's that could'nt be opened every time I started Iphoto.
I already tried to restore it by finder, but the photo's are not listed there.
I'am desperate. I hope that someone can help me.

FileSalvage will only find image files. You won't be able to recover your library as it was previously.
The Originals folder will be inside the iPhoto Library package. You can open the package like this. Look inside the Originals folder and it's subfolders for your image files. If they are not there then continue with FileSalvage. If you find that your image files are still inside their subfolders you can partially recreate your library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
In the future NEVER go inside the iPhoto LIbrary package from the finder and consider using the tip at the end of my signature below.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

Updating to iPhoto 9.5.1 lost all my photos. How can I retreive them?
I'm on a MacBook Pro using OS X version 10.9.5.
When I attempted to edit a photo in the version I had at the time, I got a message that I must update to iPhoto 9.5.1 to use that function. So I did so. When I reopened iPhoto, all my photos were gone. I looked for them in finder but found none of my photos there in the iPhoto library either.
My Time Machine backup, directs me back to iPhoto.
I just want to re-load my photos. Can you help?

  • IPhoto 09; Lost/misplaced photos?

I don't use iPhoto on my iMac too much but opened it today to search for possible old pix of a relative who just recently passed away. Much to my surprise, it only shows one Event present with two images.  The event is labelled "Jan 28 2012" though I know those two images it contains are from years ago, though I can't say exactly what date.
Can someone explain what might be going on? This is very odd as I expect there should be many GB of photos present. I've read some other posts where people have lost their only copies of pix but thankfully, I'm not in that category as I mainly use Lightroom and archive to an external drive, but I do like the 'immediacy' of iphoto for sharing or quick/dirty edits of snaps. I have previously imported the library of photos to LR
But what gives? I haven't changed/upgraded the OS (10.6.8) and I haven't been reorganizing files on the drive or stuff like that. 24" imac from ~2007. It seems as though the program has lost a link to the photos location maybe? FYI, the iphoto library info says the file is 17.8MB size.

Sorry for the long delay between posts. I may have found the problem. I discovered an iphoto library on my external drive where I import photos from SD/CF cards and inside a "My Lightroom Photos" folder.
What I don't know is whether I accidentally moved this here or how or when. Anyway, I seem to not have lost any photos. As an aside, I'm wondering if iphoto couldn't find the library (a month ago when I posted) b/c the external drive may not have been attached. Would iphoto then create a new library or should it have posted an error about not finding the library or something similar?
Moving forward, I think I won't try to restore this 'discovered' iphoto library. I'll import photos to the external drive and backup via Lightroom and then import 'keepers'/'best of' to iphoto. I do like the household sharing & display to a big TV screen via apple TV & a shared library.

    Detail:
I've recently purchaced a 4TB Thunderbolt drive to store my "vast" music and photo libraries. iPhoto had an issue reading the moved library, so I bought and used iPhoto Library Manager to "rebuild" it. Apart from much of the original data such as date taken & camera used etc, it appears to be working well. The aforementioned mpg video was taken some 9 years ago, using an early model "iMate" smart phone, and opens and plays fine on iPhoto, but I cannot open it with anything else, (I've tried iMovie, VLC players, Wondershare and Handbrake) nor can I share it. I just want to edit it, and share it with family.

I've looked at the "tell me more" links, tried downloading some of the movie players there. I'm begining to think the file is corrupt.
