Iphoto Troubleshoot

What does this widow mean when I open iphoto and how do I fix it?
"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable".

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto Troubleshoot - Lost File Upon Photo Edit

    Hello!
    I'm having trouble in iPhoto.
Each time I finish editing an image and return to the album or event screen, then click on the photo again, the area that should show the image goes black. When I right click on "Show File" the file is shown with a missing thumbnail and the size is zero bytes. So, it looks like iPhoto loses track of the file contents somewhere during the photo editing or saving process.
iPhoto works normally in all other ways. I have the '09 version (8.1.2). I've though about dropping the 15 bucks to get the new version but the reviews said that it has a reputation for being buggy.
I'm running this on a 2010 MacBook Pro 13" on OSX Lion 10.7.2.
Anyone have any ideas, thoughts, or advice? Thanks in advance!
    -Timothy

I tried it, and when the screen would typically go blank, the program crashed. This is what the report said.
It almost seems as though the edit is 'too much' for the processor to handle. The strange part is that this problem is very inconsistent- sometimes the photo will edit and save flawlessly. Other times, iPhoto will attempt to save the edit and fail. You can see the attempt through pixelated and stretched versions of the photo for a brief moment before the image goes blank.
    Thanks for your help!

  • IPhoto troubleshooting

I can't open IPhoto, says it's updating even though there are no updates

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what is the exact message that you get when opeining iPhoto?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • Having problem loading photos from iPhone 5 to iPhoto

starting syncing photos on iPhone 5 to iPhoto and it got hung up midstream . . . iPhoto just freezes up and I only get the psychedelic spinning wheel spinning for hours with nothing happening.  Not very Apple-like.  Any ideas?

    Hey AppleTom7591,
Thanks for the question. First, I would try this suggestion out:
In iPhoto '11, select the option to "Repair the iPhoto Library Database" to check the iPhoto Library database for inconsistencies and repair them, if necessary. iPhoto '11 also includes the option to "Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup," which performs the same functions as it does in iPhoto '09, but should only be attempted if the "Repair the iPhoto Library Database" option does not help.

If that doesn't work, I would try using Image Capture to get the pictures onto your Mac:
Open Image Capture (in the Applications folder) and see if the camera is recognized in this application. If your camera is still not recognized by iPhoto, check to see if the camera has a removeable storage card, such as a Compact Flash (CF) or Secure Digital (SD) card. If so, you may be able to mount this card and read the photo files from the Finder if you have a USB or FireWire card reader connected to your computer.

  • I Cannot print from imac iPhoto 9.6 using Yosemite 10.10.1to Epson printer? How do I fix this problem?

I Updated my iMac to Yosemite 10.10.1 and cannot print from iPhoto 9.6 to my Epson picture mate PM240 photo printer. I had no problem printing before the upgrade. It seems like I don't have a connection between the iMac and Epson Printer. I checked all connections and they are correct. I visited the Epson site and there were no updates available for the PM240. The problem arises after I select a picture to print. When I select PRINT from the FILE the spinning color wheel begins and I cannot go further.
I Contacted Apple and the technical adviser ran the iPhoto troubleshooting programs within IPhoto. This seemed to solve the problem, but the problem almost immediately reocurred. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Thanks for the replies guys.  Epson put me through a complex set of instructions to install an earlier driver.  The problem was not solved.  Apple also tried to solve the provlem by getting rid of the printer, unplugging it etc and then re starting and checking computer/printer communication by printing a test page from the system preferences/Pring & Fax options.  This worked proving the the computer and printer are talking to each other.
The printer works properly as a stand alone unit.  That is, I can copy and print and scan and print with no problems.
The Apple support guy didn't suggest any Apple alternative drivers so I assume there aren't any.
Neither the Epson nor Apple assistants seemed interested in the printer generated error message.  I would have thought it would at least provide a clue to the problem to someone with technical expertise.
It seems that there are a lot of problems with the 10.6.8 update so maybe Apple will get to work and bring it up to scratch.  I hope it gets things right soon.

I have a MacBook white unibody 2010 running the latest OSX and when I connect my Olympus E-500 to my Mac it will not recognize it. It shows up under USB in system preferences but it wont show in iphoto, image capture, or my desktop. It plugs into windows computers fine but my Mac doesn't seem to recognize it. Anyway to fix this? Thank you!

  • Communication error with Canon camera

I've been using the same camera for 2 years with no problems.  It has been saying communication error when I plug it into my Mac recently.  I sent the camera in for service and was told it works fine and they said my computer is the issue.  I also bought a new cord.  Same error message....Please help!  Keep in mind with your response that I'm a computer moron and you will have to dumb it down for me :}  It works fine when I remove the memory card and put it in the back of the Mac.

    Hi artylroi63,
I have two articles for you that may help you troubleshoot this issue with your camera. First, here is an article about troubleshooting camera connections:

  • Wont recognize jpgs from a Maciva-miniCD Camera (Sony)

Every time try to import jpg photos off a miniCD from a Mavica-CD300 camera, I get error messages that tells me "<this file> could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)". Is there anything I can do to get these files on my mac? They worked fine on a PC. I have several thousand photos, and I would rather not have to use a PC and save each one as a Photoshop jpgto be able to see them on a mac. Any suggestions?

    Hi Seth,
Here is a snippet I found on the web
Problem solved iPhoto wouldn't recognize Sony MVC CD30
Although I had searched Apple's Support site, I decided to give it one more shot and I stumbled across a new page entitled "iPhoto: Troubleshooting Camera Connections."
Even though Sony Mavica digital cameras are listed as compatible with iPhoto, the camera has to be set to Picture-Transfer-Protocol (PTP) before you can download. In addition, you will need to open Image Capture in the Applications folder. As soon as these steps were taken, the camera was recognized by iPhoto and all photos downloaded into Image Capture.
iPhoto: How to Change the "Open Automatically" Preference
Once you download the photos from the camera into your Pictures folder with Image Capture, put them in a labeled folder and import that folder into iPhoto.

  • IPhoto Card Builder and Ordering Service Troubleshooting

Created an invitation card with photos using iPhoto's build a card feature.  Completed the project and clicked "Buy Card."  Went through the payment information window, then submitted the order.
The charge went through just fine, but on project upload, a window pops up saying order could not be completed at this time.  "Weird," I think to myself, so I try again.  This time, another window pops up saying there was an error uploading the stuff.  There's an option to cancel the order, and I do and try again.
Looked at my bank account and now I have $300.00 locked up "Pending Authorizations."  Called Apple and they said that it should be 3-5 days for the money to unlock.
My question is:  Why does Apple charge you first, then try to upload your project for print?  Would make sense to upload first, then charge, since I'm not the only person with this problem.  Like a dummy, I tried to do just one, and what do you know?  It went through.  So, out of 50 total cards I need for an event coming up, I have one on the way.  I pray I don't have to click 49 separate times just to get my **** cards.

This is strictly a user to user forum - no one here can answer "why Apple' does anything

  • I'd like help troubleshooting moving albums from iPhoto to iPhone

Help! I'm having trouble moving iPhoto (OS 10.7.4) albums/photos back to iPhone 4S (OS 5.1.1). I previously uploaded all photos from iphone to iphoto and parsed into albums. I deleted all photos from iphone. I followed apple instructions to move selected albums from iphoto to iphone, and iTunes shows synched, but no albums or images on displaying on my iPhone.
    Thanks in advance for assistance!

It is not an iPhoto library-- it's just seperate pictures on a USB stick. I never said you can run a library on a USB stick.
Free up space on my HD
Move current photos to my "Mac My Book" 1TB
Insure moving forward all new photos are stored and accessed to and from the My Book
This is clearly a request to move the iPhoto library to an external hard drive and run it there
The instructions for doing that are
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
It is NOT possible to do that on a USB Stick!

  • Iphoto places troubleshooting

My Places map no longer displays.  Every photo I have selected contains the GPS Coordinates in the metadata AND displays when I click Option+Cmd+I (Show Extended Photo Info).  I click on Places (the 4th item in the menu bar to the left, following Events, Photos, and Faces) and the content window to the right is empty.  When I do click Option+Cmd+I, an empty map, with continent outlines, appears briefly and then disappears, leaving me with the empty grey box.  I'm using iPhoto '09, which meets the minimum requirements.  It was working a week ago.  What happened?  And more importantly, how do I fix it?  Thank you.

First: my apologies, all references in the original post to Option+Cmd+I were wrong, they should read Cmd+I.
Secondly: I found a possible solution in an archived discussion at https://discussions.apple.com/message/9277201#9277201 -- see the post beginning with "Hurray" -- tried it and it didn't work.  My iPhoto > Preferences > Advanced were already set to Automatic, so I changed it to Never, restarted iPhoto, changed it to Automatic, restarted iPhoto, and still nothing.  Clicking on Places in the left menu bar, and clicking on Show in Places at the bottom of the window that appears when I press Cmd+I, still gives me an empty map window.

  • Photo won't show on cover of Iphoto Calendar after dragging and dropping

Every year I create a calendar on Iphoto and I have always been able to troubleshoot everything myself.
This time, I am stumped. The whole calendar is ready to go but for some reason, the photo I added to the cover will not show up. I am using the same photo later in the calendar without a problem. In fact, when I hover over the picture it tells me that is being used on the cover and on page 11...but I can't see it!
The title underneath the photo will only show when I click on the text box. Once I click away from it, it will disappear.
Anybody? Christmas is approaching fast and I need to get this into production ASAP to mail to Europe.

    Hi HeyBayLondon!
It sounds like you may want to try restoring your phone and then re-syncing the content from your computer to see if the information will show up after that procedure. Information on doing that can be found right here:
