Iphoto unbelievably slow, then magically fast as lightening, then slow.
So, here is my issue, I'm hoping you can help! I've never had many problems with my Iphoto, usually if it was slow I would just restart the computer and all would be fine. I lately have been scanning in old family photos in order to make my parents a scrapbook, and that is when the problems began. My computer is not super powerful, it has 1.83 GhZ, 512 MB of memory, and I am using 61 GB out of 75GB. My Iphoto lags EVERY time I do anything in regards to editing/cropping/ or moving from one pic to the next while in edit mode. I have NO faces OR places because I thought that would make it better. I have rebuilt using the bottom option, have repaired the disk, and have deleted the preferences. However, that is not the weirdest part! Yesterday, I was in the middle of editing a photo, which took a solid 5 minutes, when I had to leave for work immediately. I left the ADJUST button open when I left, and today when I got back onto Iphoto (almost 24 hours later) Iphoto was suddenly working like magic. I was able to edit every single photo in that event without a single lag, beachball, or slowing of any kind. I thought all my problems had gone away! THen, I switched to a second event to do some more editing, and again I had the beachballs and severe lag. To me, this does NOT make sense. Can anyone help me? There are no Console messages besides me forcing the exit of Iphoto, and I am not having any other problems with the computer. In fact, I just cleared out a whole bunch of storage by deleting past photos. Thank you in advance, Juliana
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Yours is a unique problem. You've done everything I can think of. You have plenty of free space on your boot drive. Do you work in the Photo mode or Event mode? If the photo mode do you have the Event Titles displayed? To help iPhoto work as fast as possible it's best to have EVent titles displayed in the Photos mode and have all Events closed except the one you're working on. This is especially true when opening iPhoto since it will not have to render every thumbnail during the launch.
Open Activity Monitor and keep an eye on it while you're working in iPhoto to see if you can tell what processes come into play when iPhoto gives your the SWOD (spinning wheel of death). Of course more memory can help overall performance but the fact that you get good performance at times indicates that it's not just a memory issue.

IPhoto incredibly slow. . . more ram will help?
I have over 4k photos and iphoto is a pain to use now. Will adding another 512 do the trick. Anyone know of any good deals? thanks
Hi, Dave
a) it seems that you have only 512 Mb Ram. probably, another 512 or 1024 MB would help for everything what you do.
but
b) you say : " over 4k photos ": If each photo is 2.5 MB, you deal with a total of 10 GB. (I suppose for lack of otehr info a 5 Mpxl camera, which gives about that size photos.) Well, I know that the data storage is organized such that not all the file has to be read in order to get one specific part read into memory. I would safe the photos on a cd or dvd (i do that anyhow), then "clean up" (i mean: eliminate that what i don't want to use right now). I have a little less than 2 k photos, and iphoto works just fine and fast for me.
Hope this helps,

My MBP was runnning unbelievable slow, I need to re-install fresh Lion, but when I upgraded to Lion, I did not got the disc or thumb drive. What should I do?R
Instead, you could restart holding the Command and R keys, which will start up on the Recovery partition Lion creates, and then restore the operting system on the main partition.
Before doing anything like erasing the startup drivek maie sure you have an external drive with a backup copy incase things go badly. -
It seems iphoto gets slower and slower everytime I use it? anyone have a solution to this problem
sperlmeterQuestions:
How much Ram?
How big is your HD and how much free space on it?
How many items in your Library?
Have you tried rebuilding?
Have you tried a test library?
Have you tried deleting the cache? -
Hi,
Is anybody finding iPhoto o8 slow?
I'm getting a lot of spinning wheel when selecting a photo to edit full screen and it stays really pixellated for several seconds becore becoming sharp on screen. I've got the latest update, 900 photos in this particular library, a 2.16ghz 24" Imac and 3gb of ram.Mark
Back up and try rebuilding the database. Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto.
If that fails, launch Activity Monitor ad watch for other processes using the cpu as you work.

Why is my iPhoto so slow?
Why is My Iphoto so slow when I open it a use it? It takes forever to open and utilize.
Because something's wrong?
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Things like:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
- Did it ever work properly?
- Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue. -

iPhoto opens but then the spinning rainbow wheel appears and I can't do anything. I have opend iPhoto with the Option key pressed and rebuilt the library and it still happens. I want to at least access my photos and copy them to an external drive. Anyone have ideas on how to get to them?
Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

How do i play a video that is in my iphotos in slow motion? please advise
How can I play a video that is in my iphotos in slow-motion
Export them from iPhoto and use a player that supports Slo-Mo.

has details of the options in the Export dialogue. -
It takes longer to load. Way longer than earlier versions.
Loading web pages is unacceptably slow, even those with no video or flash. I am a loyal and happy FF user for many years on this same laptop and Win 7 Ultimate (32 bit) platform. Till now.
IE and other browsers like Chrome are literally in another ballpark from you. I am very sorry this has happened and hope you will fox it soon...or many of your most satisfied and loyal customers like me will be gone.I have this problem, too.
FF 17.0.1 (German version) and 32-bit Vista SP2.
FireFox stalls after URL input and "is waiting for URL...", although the sites are online and respond quickly in other browsers.
(In most cases, stall ends after 30...60 seconds, displaying desired URL.)
Moreover, during the "stall" situation: When opening a new tab or switching to an existing tab AND pressing F5 (reload) or input a new URL, the session in this tab stalls also (feels as if it is queuing "behind" the original stalling tab).
Moreover, during the "stall" situation: Firefox produces high CPU workloads (up to 100%), doing nothing (from user's point-of-view) and preventing other tasks on my PC to proceed quickly.
I tried lot of things to solve:
-> deinstall, new download, install new download
-> deactivated Addons and restart Firefox
-> always clear cache and remove cookies when exiting Firefox
Result: absolutely fruitless exercises.
Now I installed FF 16.0.1 which is working perfectly fine.
Looking forward to FF 17.0.2 or FF18 - will try again.
+++ Addendum +++
I am using ZoneAlarm V10 and its firewall. Following a suspicion I again installed 17.0.1 (for testing purposes), deactivated the ZA firewall and activated the Vista firewall. Result: also fruitless. So I again performed fallback to 16.0.1. -
IPhoto 6 slow to open and close
I have a mac mini with an external drive connected via firewire. IPhoto 6 works really fast on the mac mini...no problems. I just got a new MacBook Pro and can mount the external drive...no problem.
When I open iphoto and point to the iPhoto library on the external drive, it takes forever to open. Once it is open, it is a bit sluggish, but works OK. Then it takes forever to close as well.
I didn't think the speed over Airport was that slow....am I wrong? Why the slowdown on the MacBook Pro and the mac mini is really fast? Thought it would be the other way around.
I called Apple Care and they had me reinstall Tiger...nothing changed. Please help. Thanks.Brent:
From the posts I've read about it accessing large data files like images over Airport is going to be rather slow. Close all of the rolls before closing and then see if that improves the closing and opening process. There's just a lot of data that has to be transferred.
Do check the Airport forum as there may be some tricks available that will help speed up the process.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance. -
New iPhoto Very Slow on Mavericks
Basic specs:
- iMac (Late 2011, Dual Thunderbolt)
- 24GB RAM
- iPhoto Library at 800GB, 110K photos, ~300 albums over 10 years)
- New photos shot with Canon 6D (RAW + JPEG). Ave file size for RAW ~16MB, JPEG 4MB.
Symptoms:
- iPhoto 11 worked incredibly well. Would shoot a few hundred shots, import, then run through and tag / flag
- Upgraded to Mavericks. No issues with old iPhoto.
- New iPhoto installed, now rendering of iPhoto thumbnails takes 30-60s to resolve when opening album
- Arrow keying through photos in album takes 20-30 seconds per photo. Impossibly slow.
Any clues on what might be happening?Just posting to close this out. I had left iPhoto up and running on my machine all day (12+ hours).
Interesting - it's now very fast. The disk access has stopped, and I can browse / edit / tag photos extremely quickly.
The only two things I did:
- Last night I opened my iPhoto Library in Aperture, browsed an album to verify the problem was NOT in Aperture / the library.
- Reopened in iPhoto, left it open
My best guesses now:
- There is some background task (updating every thumbnail, updating facial tagging/guessing) that was running through 800GB of photos in the background. Once complete, the app is responsive.
- iPhoto knows when you complain about it on apple.com and that puts it on good behavior.
Not sure, but glad it's working again.

Hello everyone
iPhoto 2 takes around 7 minutes to open on my trusty 400MHz Powerbook 15" titanium running 10.3.9. Hasn't always done so, but happens without fail now. I click the icon in the dock then get a spinning disc for about 7 minutes until the rolls finally display, after which it operates as normal. I have already tried rebuilding the library (got a sore finger from holding down shift-option for 7 minutes). Does anyone know what's gone wrong here? I only have around 1100 photos totalling around 1030MB in the library, and it's all displayed in rolls by default, which would logically give the computer less work to do when initially opening the program.
To help you pitch your answer at an appropriate level, my knowledge of how Macs work on a scale of 1-10 is about 3, but getting better all the time...
Many thanks in advance for any help.
iMac 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM Mac OS X (10.4.8) Powerbook 15" titanium 400MHz PowerPC G4 384MB SDRAM Mac OS X (10.3.9)I have 2.32 GB disk space left out of a total capacity of 9.37 GB , so about 24% free space. Is this enough to let things run OK?
No, it may not be, and this is why running OS X on a 10GB hard drive is quite impractical — especially if you use iPhoto, iTunes or iMovie, which create huge libraries of data.
A hard drive on which OS X is installed, and which is used as the primary startup drive for a Mac, really ought to have at least 5GB of available space on it at all times. You need that much to perform an Archive & Install of OS X, which under some circumstances is the appropriate remedy for OS corruption or other problems. You need at least that much to burn a single-sided DVD using either an internal DVD burner (which I your Tibook probably doesn't have) or an external burner. If you aren't concerned about being able to perform either of those operations, you can safely run with less than 5GB of free space on your startup drive — but the less free space you have, the more likely you are to run into slowdowns or worse problems, including the eventual loss of data. 2GB should be considered an absolute minimum under any and all circumstances, and 1GB is far into the danger zone. You are now very close to the minimum, and depending on your habits of usage and maintenance, you may be too close to expect your Powerbook to operate efficiently.
The less RAM you have, the more it matters how much free disk space is available, and the slower your Mac will run under all circumstances. 384MB of RAM is certainly not minimal, but if you had 512MB, 768MB or 1GB of RAM, your OS wouldn't need to make as much use of space on the hard drive for its swapfiles, and most operations would run faster. And if you had a larger hard drive, you'd be able to store a lot more photos and other data, update or upgrade your software freely, and install new applications before you needed to worry about how little free space remained on the drive.
If I were you, I'd replace the 10GB hard drive ASAP with at least a 30-40GB unit. They are now ridiculously cheap: for well under $100 USD, you could have a much larger, faster and quieter drive, and installation is so easy it's described right in your Powerbook Getting Started user's manual. -
IPhoto unbearably slow!!
iPhoto takes ages to load up, when scrolling it will hiccup every, say, 20 photos, opening photo will take a few seconds, and every time I close it, not only does it take 30 seconds to close, but then it'll freeze up my computer for like 10 minutes where everything slows to the most unbearable crawl and almost every application goes "not responding."
Is there anyway to make iPhoto work a little faster, and like not slow my whole computer all the way down? BTW, I have a Macbook Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core Duo with 2GB of ram and about 10gb free on the HD.Have you rebooted your laptop recently? If you tend to just sleep it shut it down and then reboot.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard. -
Photoshop CS4 is unbelievably slow. Downgrade me please.
I'm running Photoshop CS4 on a 2.6 MacBook Pro with 4 Gig of RAM. Everything on this machine runs beautifully, and I rarely, if ever, experience enough lag in any app to become frustrated.
Photoshop CS4 is the only exception.
Extremely frustrating problems include:
up to 10 second pause before refresh when zooming in and out.
5 to 20 second pauses when selecting/deselecting layers.
stuttering and crippling lag when dragging an image around, especially when zoomed in.
unresponsive reactions to layer nudging.
anywhere from 10 second to 5 minute (not an exaggeration) pause while saving for web, accompanied by frequent crashes.
all of the above problems are completely random and not consistently reproduceable, though they occur very regularly.
As a professional designer, I've been used to ignoring Photoshop CS3 and concentrating on the work I was doing. This is exactly how a good tool should function. With Photoshop CS4 I spend far more time frustrated and conscious of the unresponsive & clumsy tool than I do paying attention to what I'm trying to do. Apart from being constantly and unbelievably frustrating, it's costing me time, and therefore money, and affecting the quality of my work.
If anyone from Adobe is paying attention here, you should be very worried. I have spent a great deal of energy lately wishing for an alternative to Photoshop. Having customers whose loyalty is based on nothing more than a lack of viable alternatives is a perfect opportunity for a competitor to drink your milkshake, and earn the gratitude of customers like myself. You, the creators of the Quark killer InDesign, should know that very well.
The first Photoshop CS4 update, 11.0.1, solved none of my problems. As a customer who bought CS4 new, and not as an upgrade, I don't have the option of downgrading to CS3, although I would dearly love to. Providing me with a free downgrade wouldn't really solve my problem – Photoshop CS4 would still be painfully slow – but at least I could work in peace again.
How about it Adobe?
Are you a designer using Photoshop CS4? Tell me about your experiences here:
http://mattbalara.com/2009/05/downgrade-me-please.htmlYou can in fact get your money back from Adobe during the first 30 days after buying the software.
Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to comment on the performance of CS4 or any other software on a laptop, but what I can tell you is that CS4 runs very fast and smoothly on my lowly, older machine.
Dual bootable, DP MDD 1.25GHz G4 (2004), maxed out at 2GB of RAM, both Spotlight and Dashboard disabled, Photoshop primary scratch disk on dedicated 160GB internal drive, at least 100GB available on each of the four internal drives, up to 300GB on some. Counting external FW drives just over 1TB of drive space available. nVidia GeForce 7800 GS 425MHz 256 MB "mutant" flashed graphics display card. Processor napping enabled through CHUD 3.5.2. Tiger 10.4.11. Photoshop 11.0.1.
If you want Adobe to read your message, contact them directly. We're mostly users like you in this forum.
