IPhoto unrecogzized format

I upgraded to 10.6.8 , iPhoto 9, and now I get  "unrecognized format", with my Nikon P4. First time thats happened.  Any known issues, I'm up to date on software.   Don't quite know how to proceed.

Created new user account.
Same problem.
BTW, I'm on 10.6.3 on this machine (not 10.7 or 10.8).
OK, here's what's going on.
I have a MBP and a MB.
The hard drive on the MB crashed, and Mom didn't have the original iLife disk.
About a year ago, I bought a bigger HDD for the MPB.  Stuck the old HDD (snow leopard) in a drawer.
Since old MB hard drive crashed, I grabbed the hard drive that I stuck in the drawer a year ago into the old MB.  Surprisingly, it worked (it came out of a MBP, not a MB).  That copy seemed to work fine, and had the user accounts I needed.  But I didnt like the idea that updates on the drive were really for a MBP, so I installed Snow Leopard over the top of the existing Snow Leopard.  Thinks seemed to go well, until I noticed this iPhoto '09 quirk a day later.
As a test, I just now went back and booted the MB off a clone of that MBP--Snow Leopard disk.  It boots fine, and when I tried to import a screen shot I got mixed results.  Seems I can FILE-->IMPORT a photo, but I cannot drag/drop onto the open application window.  I can drag/drop into the icon on the dock.  If I remeber right, that was the older iPhoto behavior, except for one thing.... When I drag/drop to the open application window I get that error message that says my JPG is not compatible.  But if I drag the same JPG to the icon in the DOCK it works just fine.  Very strange behavior.
So my delima is as follows.  I am the rightful owner of iLife for this MacBook (MB).  I don't have the iLife disk anymore.  I have an electronic copy on an external drive which I can boot to and run iPhoto.  But for some reason the iPhone on my internal hard drive doens't exhibit the same behavior.  I'm really not inclined to buy a separate copy for each version of the OS and for each machine I own.  I'm not even convinced that re-buying iLife would solve the problem on this MacBook.  Thoughts?

  • Mts format file to an iPhoto friendly format

I recently  made a movie project and my movies are .mts format. I need to put them in iPhoto in order to edit them but .mts is not a recognizable format on my mac (Mac OS). Could somone plese help me convert these files to an iphoto frindly format.

I have the same issue and have been researching the answer. Here's what I've discovered. imovie doesn't recognized .mts files. I've read that final cut pro does. It's expensive though. I've also read that if you import directly from the camera you can import into imovie. I guess there are other files when you record that are imported with the .mts files and enables imovie to do it's thing. I used a pc to save my videos onto an external hard drive and only have the .mts files. You can use a 3rd party app to convert the file. Look at Old Toads post above.
This is a link with some info on .mts files. Put .mts in the search field.

  • Exporting and importing movies in iPhoto - unrecognised format

    hi
I am trying to export just a few movies from iphoto in my user account, to my daughters parental support account on the same mac. (I imported from her camera to my account by mistake and deleted them from her camera, but want them only to be on her account ..... )
It has worked fine for the photos.
I am selecting the movie files. File export, kind original. this exports a .AVI file which i have put in a shared folder.  I can reimport these .AVI files into my iphoto but when i fast user switch to her account , open iphoto, and try to import i get an error message saying that the file could not be imported due to an unrecognized format. I have spent ages trying to get this to work, checking file permissions etc, but i cannot get the movies across.
An additional frustration is that if i create a new folder in the shared area, or rexport the files again from my iphoto ( i was trying exporting in all the different kinds to see if that works), then the new files i exported do not show up in either my daughters finder or iphoto files. Why is this? Are they hidden? and if so why do these ones not show but the first ones i exported do show?
THanks for any help. I am rapidly going off the mac .... it is making me feel so dumb.

I can reimport these .AVI files into my iphoto but when i fast user switch to her account , open iphoto, and try to import i get an error message saying that the file could not be imported due to an unrecognized format. I have spent ages trying to get this to work, checking file permissions etc, but i cannot get the movies across.
AVI is not a native mac video format, and it will depend on the codec used in the AVI, if Quicktime can play it. Do you have additional codecs installed in your account, that are not installed for all users and missing in your daughter's account? For example Perian, or Flip4Mac? Then install these too for your daughters account.

  • Cannot import photos into iPhoto - Unreadable format????

When I try to import photos from my Original iPhone to iPhoto (software 3.1.3) I receive an error message that says :
    Unreadable format:
The following files could not be imported. (The file is an unrecognized format.)
    IMG_0279.JPG
And lists all file names. I have imported pics from the phone many times in the past with no issues.
Please help! I really want to import these pics.

Thank you for your advice. I tried image capture and it will not import either. I know that I can email myself the photos and that is fine. My concern is that not one photo will import. I just took a new one to test. So I guess there is an issue with my phone or camera.

  • IPhoto Slideshow Format

    Hi,
I'm pretty advanced with computers in general and have limited knowledge of iPhoto. I'll try to offer as many specifics as I can - some may be irrelevant. I am using a PowerBook G4 1.57 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 30" Cinema Display set to 2560 X 1600. I am running Mac OS X v 10.4.2 and am using iPhoto version 5.0.4 (263).
I am putting together a slideshow with around 130 photos. Some of the photos are quite large in their native format (3008 X 2000 pixels). I set the 'Default Settings for the entire slideshow' using the cog settings button to play each slide for 3 seconds with a dissolve transition and the speed for the dissolve in the middle. When playing the slidewhow with the 'Slideshow Format' set to current display, the slideshow presents as expected. However, when the Slideshow format is set to '4:3 iDVD, TV' the slides play for around 6 or 7 seconds each. Is this because of the size of the photos? I read on Apple's web site that the larger the size of the file, the more trouble iPhoto has displaying them quickly.
Any advice here? My slideshow is timed beautifully to my soundtrack, but when I change the format to export to iDVD its awfull.
    Thanks!

    Dino,
If your goal is to burn a DVD slideshow for viewing on a TV I would first crop all of the images to 4:3 format. If you don't care about TV format, keep the images in their full size and enjoy them on your great monitor.
    Hope this helped!

  • Batch Changing iPhoto File Formats

I have scanned a few thousand photos and imported them to my iPhoto library. 90% of them are saved in Photoshop format. Most of these photos have comments, locations, and face IDs, The date has been changed to the date the photo was taken.
How can I change the file format from Photoshop to JPEG and retain the data that currently exists?

What settings exactly are you using in the Export window?
There is no way to write Faces Information to a file. Simply there is no standard for sharing this information yet. The workaround is to use keywords. This is true of all Faces type technology on all systems.
If your goal is "improved response time and more stable iPhoto Library" then the changing the file format is not what you need to do. I would be looking to other things.
Can you describe the symptoms you are having?
    Regards
    TD

  • When I download my NEF (RAW) format picture into iPhoto, the format is automatically transformed to JPEG. How can I keep my NEF format?

When I download from my Nikon camera a NEF format picture, iPhoto transformes it automatically to JPEG. How can I keep the NEF format?

Your RAW photos are safely in iPhoto - the JPEGs are simply display previews and versions for use by other program  ---  you can export the RAW by exporting with kind original

  • IPhoto "unrecognized format" error when importing

Looking for some help on a weird one here.
I recently upgraded my Intel iMac to Snow Leopard and iPhoto '09 from Leopard and iPhoto '08. Recently, I've been getting an occasional error message when trying import images that have been scanned and placed in a folder in my Pictures folder.
Scenario #1 - I tried to import a folder with 7 different PNG images in it. iPhoto started the import process and then brought up an error message stating "Unreadable Files: 6 The following files could not be imported. (The file is in an unrecognized format.)." What I don't understand is that it imported one of the images. If it recognizes one PNG file, why not all of them? All were scanned at same time with same settings. I don't believe it's PNG specific and the next instance will explain why
Scenario #2 - I tried to share some images out of my iPhoto '09 library with my wife who is running a MacBook w/ iPhoto '08. I dragged an event directly to my drop box folder. She launched iPhoto and tried to import those images. Of the 154 images (all JPG's), she kept getting an error message that 27 of them were an "unrecognized format".
As an FYI...my existing iPhoto Library has 21,250 images in it. I was once told by an Apple Store employee that they have seen many times that iPhoto starts to act weird after a photo library reaches 20,000+ images. Not sure if that's true, but thought I'd mention it.
Anyone have any ideas here? This is really frustrating because I have a lot of historical images I need to scan and import. I don't want to fight this problem through that entire process.
Thanks in advance for the help and have a great day.
    Joe

Hey there TD....sorry for delay, but I've been too tied up lately to try the new account idea. Going to do that later and thanks again for all of your help.
With that said, thanks to all for the feedback and comments. There is some very interesting stuff going on here, but I don't believe my issue is solely related to B/W images. I believe there is some validity to that theory, but not solely. Of the original 7 images that I scanned in Image Capture, 6 of the 7 were B/W and the only one that successfully imported was a Color image. To dispute that theory, the 2nd scenario I mentioned above was all Color images that were originally imported from my Nikon D90 (RGB format). I was copying those images from one machine to another and then tried to import them when I got those images. Machine they came from was running iPhoto 09' and machine they were going to was running iPhoto 08'.
I have gone back to scanning those B/W images in Epson Scan (finally got Epson to straighten that issue out). What I noticed during this last round is if I tried to import a large number of images, I'd get an error on a few of them. My work-around has been to only import 4 or 5 images at a time. Since doing that, I have had no issues with importing any of my B/W scans.
Again, thanks to all for the help and I'll keep you posted if I notice anything else that may seem to contribute. Take care and have a great day.

  • Iphoto video format

Can mp4 video format be loaded into iMovie and if so how?  My son shot a bunch of video on his old Go Pro Hero.  I have it on a thumb drive.  It's in mp4 format.  I tried to import it into iMovie.  It says its unrecognizable.  That doesn't make sense.  I also tried to just drag and drop.  No go.  What am I doing wrong?

How about some information on what you've got and what you're doing so we have something to work with?  What version of iPhoto, what camera, what video format, do you have Quicktime Player 7 installed, etc?

  • Photos from iPhone 4s wont display in iPhoto - unrecognized format?

    Good Afternoon!
I am trying to transfer photos from my iPhone 4 to my MAC.
I've done this successfully many times however today it isn't working.
As per the usual process I have plugged in my phone to my MAC and this is what is displayed in iPhoto.
When I try to import I get a message pop up saying that it is in an unrecognized format.
    Can someone please help?!
    Thank you. Lisa.

That tells us that the problem is not related to your library but more widespread.
Log into another user account on your Mac and see if you can launch iPhoto without crashing.  If you can't then a reinstall of the iPhoto application is indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iPhoto from the disk it came on originally.

  • Why won't iPhoto recognise format of pictures?

What didn't work for you? It was a test. Did it fail? Where?

Can you access those images with Image Capture (in the Applications Folder) Are you importing from a camera? Can you use a Card Reader? Try reformat the card after you get the images off.
In either case, you need to give us concrete information to work with. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • IPhoto after formating

I recently formated my mac hd. I had iPhoto and other applications saved on my virtual machine disc, but right now I can't seem to use iPhoto... (nor import adress book contacts, but that's another story). I have it saved as an app in the Applications folder, but when I double click on it, this window shows
Does anybody know what to do with that?

    Reinstall it.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.

  • Iphoto book formatting question

I'm looking for a format option that allows for a caption under each photo, and where I can put at least four photos per page.  Anyone know where there is such a format?  Thanks!

Check Liz Castro's site iPhoto Book Themes - Main - Picture Book to see if there's a theme that will hafve what you want.
In one of the older iPhotos (which may not be supported any more) was a year book theme of sorts which would do that.

  • HT1040 iphoto text formatting is lost

in iphoto - when i export, try to order, or close and reopen the app it loses formatting on some of the text boxes.  not all.  just some.  and even when 2 boxes are used, some pages the top stays and the bottom reformats. what's the deal?

First try  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If there is no change launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos, make a test book and check to see if the same problem persists. If it doesn't then your current library is the culprit.
In that case make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
