IPhoto unresponsive

I run Mountain Lion with iPhoto 09 and 3GB RAM on a 5 year old iMac 2.0 processor.  iPhoto seems understandably slow sometimes but works well.  However, when I open Preferences pane, it goes to Beach Ball, unresponsive, have to Force Quit.  Also on a second user account, I am unable to drag photos around in the Browser, but Preference pane responds there.  All settings look normal.
I clicked in Finder on Package Contents, wondering whether I should trash plist, but would that require redoing settings?  Also there are both "Info.plist" & "version.plist". What's the difference?  Any suggestions on how to "clean up the act"?

Go into the System Preferences and see if you have a MobileMe pane.  If you do then log out of MMe. Next open iPhoto and try the preferences again.  If it's successful then go to the Accounts pane and delete the MMe account if there is one.
If you still can't open the iPhoto prefs disconnect from the internet, launch iPhoto and try entering the preferences again.  If succesful go to the Accounts pane and delete the MMe account.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?

  • IPhoto Unresponsive, Spinning Beach Ball

Whenever I attempt to open iPhoto, I get the spinning beach ball and have to force quit. This occurs every time. Any suggestions?

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
    If tht doesn't help:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • IPhoto "09 Won't Delete Photos

I'm using iPhoto '09 and backing everything to Time Machine and to DVD discs. I'm trying to clear some space on my computer's hard drive by deleting old, backed up, photos.
I moved them to the iPhoto trash and emptied it. But the "ghosts" of past events are still there and the Library still reads at a little over 9GB.
When I say "ghosts" I mean that the events are still there but appear empty until I scroll then the images are visible while scrolling but not at any other time.
I tried dragging them to the trash again and emptying it again but that makes iPhoto unresponsive.
Why are the images still there and how do I delete them?

The images you see are simply cached data.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

    Thanks for any help

As has already been pointed out, you've got a lot of junk installed. The biggest problem is likely to be the Intego software, which is far too heavy-handed and is known to devour system resources and cause instability. You definitely need to remove it. Clinging to it simply because you pay for it is simply not logical if it is causing you problems. For less intrusive means of protecting yourself against malware, see my Mac Malware Guide.
You also need to clean out your login items list, which is extensive, and should uninstall any apps you're not using. (I see you have Turbo Tax 2011, for example... since it is now the 2013 tax season, you can probably uninstall the 2011 version at this point.) When uninstalling an app, be sure to use the uninstaller provided by the developer of that app. Do not simply drag it to the trash (unless it was purchased from the App Store), and do not use any general-purpose uninstallers like AppZapper or AppCleaner.
I'd also point out one other thing:
    Top Processes by CPU:
                 100%          com.apple.ShareKitHelper
    Top Processes by Memory:
              1.48 GB          com.apple.ShareKitHelper
Note the problems that ShareKitHelper is causing. This is a part of the system, but I don't really know what it's for or why it is misbehaving. Something is causing it to hammer your processor and devour RAM, though. This may be an indication of deeper problems with your system, or may clear up after you pare down your overloaded system a bit.

  • Turning photostream on makes Iphoto very slow and unresponsive.

When i enable Photostream either through the settings or directly from Iphoto it causes Iphoto to become very slow and unresponsive.
When i click on an album to view it takes around 60 seconds for the album to open, when it finally opens all the thumbnails are blurry and scrolling through the album is virtually impossibe.
If i then turn of Photostream everything is fine.
Im using a late 2011 Air with 4gb memory and i have around 132gb of free space on the drive.

    jaceylucifer,
I just sorted an issue I had. When checking the photsteam box in iPhot preferences it unchecked straight away.
Method 1 on this link sorted me out in 2 mins. I have advised the senior apple care guy that was trying to sort this out for me.  http://helpdeskgeek.com/help-desk/photostream-keeps-turning-off-in-iphoto-fix-it /
    Hope it helps.

    thanks Terence.
Couple of updates: Post my earlier update - I shutdown and restarted and then again opened iPhoto in normal library. It opened fine, and imported photos - it worked fine.
I also did what you mentioned - created a test library and imported few photos - it worked fine as well.
not sure what was/is the core problem here !!!
    thanks for your inputs.

  • IPhoto library upgrade hangs, application unresponsive.

    Hello,
A few weeks ago all of a sudden my iPhoto library wouldn't open–I'd launch and get a spinning beach ball, force quit and try again, and get the beach ball. I deleted the .plist file to no avail, and then was told by someone who knows macs pretty well to just reinstall iPhoto and start fresh.
I reinstalled, updated to the latest version, and when I launch I'm told that my library needs to be upgraded. I start the upgrade and then after 30 seconds or so I get the beach ball and it says iPhoto is unresponsive. My library is around 50gb.
What should my next step be?
    Thanks!

    Regards

  • Ever since my iphoto library crashed (ran out of space without warning) my mcbook pro has been slow, unresponsive, freezes in sleep mode and won't restart... please help.

    Hi everyone
Ever since my iphoto library crashed (ran out of space without warning) my mcbook pro has been slow, unresponsive, freezes in sleep mode and won't restart...
I've since backed everything up on an external hard drive, removed the corrupt library, even reinstalled the operating software and there is now hardly anything on the hard drive, it still runs painfully slow. If I close the lid which puts it in sleep mode, it either doesn't go into sleep mode but instead the battery just gets drained and I find it completely empty of power (it won't start again unless plugged in), or it goes into sleep mode but just freezes when I try to reopen.
In iphoto (reinstalled) but even other applications it is painfully slow, not like a mac at all!
I am trying to go to genius bar with it but thinking maybe someone in this forum can help...
    Many thanks
    Andre

  • IPhoto becomes unresponsive while geotagging

Hi there, iPhoto becomes unresponsive when assigning a place to the photos.  Does anybody know why?  Or how to get that bug fixed?  Each time I end up force qutting the app and I fear one of these times there will be data loss/corruption.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Jorge...

There seems to be a bug in iPhoto 11 version 9.1.3 (607) (latest version).  It worked very well in Dec 2010.  Once I set it as "automatic" in Preferences, I was able to assign the place to the event.
I just got back from New Zealand and I can no longer assign a city that I had not been to in the past. I'm only able to see the places that I've been to.
Assigning Places is broken is this version.

  • IPhoto 9.3 unresponsive

I just got my new MacBook Pro today and naturally, updated all of the software and applications. Now, everytime I open iPhoto, it becomes unresponsive. There are no photos on it because it's a new computer (obviously). How do I fix this?
PS - This is my first Mac and I've never used iPhoto

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    If that fails:
Restore from your back up, repair the Library and try again

  • IPhoto becomes unresponsive

I recently got a new camera (Nikon D7100) which produces 24-mega pixel images.  Now, when I download my images to iPhoto and double-click on an image to view it larger, once I'm in the large view, iPhoto becomes unresponsive.  I'll try and click on the arrow to take me back to the collection of photos and nothing happens.  If I try and delete the image with the delete key, nothing happens. I have to quit out of iPhoto and relaunch it. Restarting my computer had no effect.
I'm using an older Mac (a 2 x 3 GHZ Dual-=Core Intel Xeon) with 11GB of memory, and I'm running iPhoto 11 (v9.4.3). Is there anything I can do to make iPhoto more responsive short of buying a new computer?

    >Try downloading iPhoto Library Manager <
Larry, are you suggesting iPhoto Library Manager because its rebuild command may be more effective to fix my big library than iPhoto's?  Or because you're suggesting I do create a new library, and use iPhoto Library Manager to manage the multiple libraries?
    >The new library contains only sharable items so does not contain projects, keepsakes, etc<
You kinda lost me there.  I'm not sure what constitutes a sharable item.  Are you saying a new iPhoto Library Manager-created library would not transfer over project like slideshows and books?

  • IPhoto always becomes unresponsive

Every time I use iPhoto, my computer (Macbook Pro 2011) freezes (all programs become unresponsive) and the fans become very loud. I lose whatever I changed in that session each time. At best, iPhoto is just very slow with the rainbow pinwheel happening often, and I can't have music playing in iTunes at the same time.
Does anyone know why this happens?

    Damaged Library.
Back to the original Library then
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto '11 very slow and unresponsive - unusable, please advise!

I am having some problems with iPhoto '11. When I try to scroll through the image thumbnails, it often stops with a spinning beachball then I have to wait 10-20 seconds for it to catch up.
Also when I hit space to bring up the full image from a thumbnail, it appears then I get a spinning beachball and have to wait 20-30 seconds, after which the multi-image-scroller at the bottom appears and everything is responsive again.
When I look in Activity Monitor I can see that iPhoto is maxing out the CPUs (one of them at a time, it seems).
Together these two issues mean that it is unusable.
As to the possible cause, I have two theories
    1) It could be a recent iPhoto 11 update I installed
    2) It could be because I recently imported a large number of photos (an extra 50Gb) which may have taken my iPhoto Library above some maximum threshold. (Does anyone know if there is a recommended maximum size?).
My iPhoto Library contains 80,000 photos (some of which are actually videos) and takes up about 300Gb. It is located on my external 750Gb Iomega drive, connected via USB (I don't have room on the hard drive for the library). I did not experience these issues a few days ago, and I had about 250Gb library/72,000 photos then.
Having read the forums it seems that I may need to do one of the following
    - Split the library into smaller libraries (which would be a pain, but might allow me to be productive again)
    - Figure out a way to get the library on a faster drive... perhaps upgrading my internal drive to a larger one or SSD and put it on there
    - Wait for Apple to improve performance of iPhoto
    - Revert back to iPhoto '09
    - Find an alternative product that can manage large libraries better... Is Aperture any good? Are there other good products?
    - Some other solution I don't know about.
Since there are many possible ways forward I would appreciate some advice, anything you think would help, as well as any suggestions and/or officially supported methods.
    Thanks in advance
    Alex Bowyer

    Thank you for your reply.
I tried deleting the cache files and it made no difference.
I'd already waited for the new Faces to be scanned.
However, I found your response in another thread suggesting rebuilding using iPhoto Library Manager to create a new library.
I did this, and it took over 48 hours to complete but it did the job nicely. It ported everything across - images, keywords, albums, even faces. It also found 13Gb of duplicate photos I didn't know about!
The only thing I had to do was recreate my smart albums.
But now my new iPhoto Library runs smoothly and I can work again! Awesome!
    Thanks.
