IPhoto Unstable

I posted a question recently about a problem whereby iPhoto would no longer export titles and descriptions (Does iPhoto no longer include metadata when exporting images as jpegs?) Following advice from Terence Devlin to create a new library and import my photod using iPhoto Manager, I thought I had fixed the problem, but it has returned with a vengeance. When I export photos as jpegs, none of the title and description information is exported.
Furthermore, I have new problems:
Photos that I have taken in the last couple of weeks and carefully edited have lost all their edits; I see only the original versions of my photos
Photos that look OK as thumbnails (i.e. edited) show the edited photo for a split second when I open it, but then flick immediately to the unedited version
Some photos that I took several years ago have had their keywords corrupted, i.e. every photo in certain events (not all) have every keyword assigned to them, not just the keywords that actually belong to the photo.
I'm feeling pretty desperate about this. There are 9000 photos in this particular library on which I have spent untold hours editing, adding ratings, descriptions and keywords. I don't know how extensive the problems are. I am actually extremely unhappy with iPhoto, which I regard as a very untrustworthy product. I had major problems a couple of years ago from which it took me a vast amount of time to recover, piecing together bits of information from various backups. This product has been around a long time; why isn't it rock solid by now?
The question is, what's wrong this time? Is the program corrupt, in which case, can I reinstall it, or is my library corrupt (AGAIN), in which case how can I repair it? I am terrified of losing my photos and all the countless hours I have put into them.
Brian Smale

Have you confirmed that these problems exist in a new library?
Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
     User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder: User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks and Yosemite,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.

  • IPhoto 08 extremely unstable with external

    Good evening
I am very frustrated with iPhoto as the application keeps crashing every 3-4 minutes. I have my pictures stored on an external drive and have created a library also on the external. When I imported all my photos over to the library, I used the advanced option of not actually copying the items to the library (1.4 gig; actual photos 'imported' are 34 gig = 16000 photos).
Are all these advanced and external options combined making my iPhoto unstable?
I have the latest iPhoto and MAC software updates installed.
Any thoughts or suggestions? I want to keep my MACBook Pro somewhat uncluttered of photos so that I can edit videos!
Thank you for your time and thoughts.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
No, neither of these things will make iPhoto unstable.
    Post the Crash Log.
    It's at Home / Library / Logs / Crash-Reporter / iphoto.crash.log
Double click on the file and it will open in the Console. Copy and Paste it in here.
Just a heads up: You need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using a referenced Library.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about finding the files, that can be easily done from the iPhoto Window.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically.
    Regards
    TD

  • IPhoto 09 - Very unstable

I had a serious issue after installing 09, but restoring the library from a time machine backup resolved that.
However, it's crashed three times this morning, twice during a "face identification" process, and once during a slide show creation.
Now, still in slide show creation, I have the beach ball and iPhoto is locked up.
Is this a BETA? Because if so, I'd have no issue...but would not have forked out the cash either. I wouldn't be so critical if the previous version of iPhoto was as unreliable. But it was rock solid--I don't think it ever crashed on me...not once.
    -- sw
    Bad form Apple.

Sounds like it a local issue. Boot into Safe Mode. Safe mode runs disk repair during the startup so may take a little more time than usual. Once booted and running repair disk permissions also.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: iPhoto 8's new option in it's rebuild library window, "Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" may make this tip obsolete. We'll know when users have occasion to use it and see if that's the case.

  • IPhoto very unstable...

iPhoto will consistently give me the beach ball of death whenever I attach my Canon Rebel Xti and use the scroll bar in iPhoto while it communicates with my Canon.
Basically I can't do anything else and just get a "Loading Photos..." message - 1 hour later same message, nothing change. Activity Monitor shows 100% CPU for iPhoto.
I can duplicate this behavior every single time and have sent problem reports to Apple.
So far, my work around has been to turn on my Camera (Canon) and touch nothing for 10-15 minutes and leave iPhoto alone -- seriously, don't move the mouse, don't try to open any other apps, just wait and wait and wait, eventually it will display small icons of my photos.
But iPhoto is definitely extremely fragile.
    Rob

Have you tried a different USB port and/or different cable? How is the performance if you use Image Capture to view and upload the photos on the camera? Have you tried card reader? Two advantages are it's faster and save's wear and tear on the camera's ports.
First delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, reboot and try again. Next, upload the photos to a folder on the desktop with Image Capture, reformat the memory card using the camera, take some test shots and try again. Could be a problem with the card's formatting.

  • Iphoto 9  very unstable, Create new library.  Import one picture = crash

    Reloaded  Iphoto 9.
    Create new library.
    Import one picture,
    Iphoto 9  crashes immediately.
Same behavior I was trying to fix.
    plist trashed. permissions repaired,
Iphoto Lib manager also crashes Iphoto 9.
    macbook 2.26  running 10.6.8
    appreciate any insight.

Did you delete the receipts before reinstalling?
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • How can I restore an iPhoto library from Time Machine (ML) - when I TM doesn't see the backup??

    Hi,
I recently did a Time Machine backup of my MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion) onto an external HDD. Around the time of the last backup, my system was behaving funny so I decided to rebuild the OS X.
Because the last TM backup was of a system that as mentioned, was somewhat 'unstable', and I only had a few backups available (didn't have TM running too long beforehand) - I decided not to use TM to 'restore' my system. I just did  a clean install of ML and planned on pulling files over manually. I'd done this before and it worked a treat.
This time ran into a snag. The backup disk TM used was an external HDD which I wanted to upgrade (suffice to say it works fine). So, I needed to move the backup.backupdb directory to my other HDD. The copy seemed to work fine ... so far so good.
I installed the new ML OS on my MacBook Pro and that was fine too. I was able to pull most of my files over by going into the TM backup and copying what I needed.
BUT, for some reason, this didn't work for the iPhoto library?
Alas, I found that you need to do a 'restore' iPhoto library file from whithin TM. So I fired up TM and noticed that it didn't recognise the old backup file located on the HDD. I.e. when I turned on TM, pointed it to the external HDD (where I copied the previous backup to), it started a fresh backup.
So ... my question is - "How do I restore the iPhoto library if I can't get to it from TM?"
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help! The last 15 years of photos are stored in this library!

    Hi ...
I've found a solution to my problem.
Time Machine locates extenal HDD backups differently depending if they were done via a network or via a USB/FireWire/Thunderbolt connection.
My initial backup was done via a direct Thunderbolt connection. I ran into the above issue b/c the second time when I tried looking for the backup file the HDD was conencted to my iMac and I was accessing it via a network conenction.
I simply connected the drive directly to my MacBook pro and ... voila. I was able to see the backup, select the iPhoto library and begin the restore.
    Hope this helps.
BTW - I found this out by reading the 'blue box' selection on this page: http://pondini.org/TM/E2.html
    (Thanks goes to Pondini!)

  • If I install a trial version of Aperture and don't like it, will I be able to still use my photo library in iPhoto?

I'm evaluating both Aperture and Adobe's Lightroom to decide which one meets my needs for the best price (got a deal on Lightroom 3 for $120 and I know Aperture 3 is $79 in the Mac App Store).
    I have a few questions:
I currently use iPhoto '11 (9.1.3) and have Photoshop CS4, so I have tools for importing DSLR shots and making pro-type changes in Camera Raw, while also having iPhoto to organize my photo library and syncing Events and Albums with my iPhone and iPad.
I like that I would be able to maintain my iPhoto library data for Faces and Places in Aperture, but am concerned that when the iPhoto library is "upgraded" for Aperture, and I decide I don't really need that program, the upgraded library won't work with iPhoto anymore.
Will I still be able to use iPhoto to access and organize my library, or will it be forever converted for use with Aperture?
I'm considering Lightroom because I have been disappointed with the number of bugs showing up in recent iPhoto releases. I'm a bit weary of buying another photo management software product from Apple. iPhoto '11 crashed my old iMac very frequently (I wound up upgrading to a new iMac due to this and I was expecting to run out of hard drive space in a year or two anyway).
Recently, iPhoto bugs make Events show up multiple times in iTunes when syncing for iPhone and iPad.
If iPhoto management is this unstable, I would like to consider choosing a new method of organizing and syncing to iOS devices and abandoning the iPhoto library method.
Will I find a better user experience with Aperture, or does it also use the single file library and suffer the same struggles iPhoto users have been seeing lately?

The iPhoto library isn't changed in any way by Aperture. Aperture will import the Library and you can choose to copy the files to the Aperture Library or reference them within iPhoto. As long as you don't delete files from the iPhoto Library via Aperture (which you could do if you choose to Reference) there is no impact on iPhoto
Will I still be able to use iPhoto to access and organize my library, or will it be forever converted for use with Aperture?
    They are completely different libraries.
Recently, iPhoto bugs make Events show up multiple times in iTunes when syncing for iPhone and iPad.
    Fixed in the 9.1.3 update.
Will I find a better user experience with Aperture, or does it also use the single file library and suffer the same struggles iPhoto users have been seeing lately?
Like iphoto, Aperture can use the "single file library" or it can use a Referenced Library (just like iphoto can). Note that using a Referenced Library offers not a whit more in terms of features or capabilities. It's file storage plain and simple. Nothing more.
No you won't see the "same struggles iPhoto users have been seeing..." because Aperture is an entirely different allication.
But you my see Aperture or Lightroom struggles

  • Can iPhoto meet my user sharing & back-up needs?

Hi all and happy new year,
I have been struggling with iPhoto ever since I switched to a mac a year ago. Most importantly for me I want to share a library of shared family photos with my wife who has her own user profile on our mac, Apple's published solutions seem messy and spawn other issues. My needs boil down to the below points:
    1. I want to share a photo library with other users of my iMac so we can all edit the photos. Ideally the library should not need to be open or closed on one user profile in order to be useable by another.
    2. I want to be able to back-up the mac including the shared photos using time machine. Ideally the mac should hold the master copy so the back-up is on the external HD (if the master and the back-up are both on the external HD then it doesn't provide security against damage to the drive etc)
The simple solution to 1. would be for an iPhoto library saved in the 'shared' section of the mac HD to be useable by all users. However, this doesn't work - if you do this it becomes highly unstable and I am worried that it may end up corrupting the entire library. Apple proposes two 'solutions' which can only be described as messy workarounds (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US ) and both hold problems as far as I can see and prevent meeting need 2.:
    a. Moving the iPhoto library to an external drive - It seems this will prevent the time machine back-up from including the photos. And even if it can I only want one external drive (I am contemplating a time capsule), and this would mean the back-up would be on the same drive as the primary library. Furthermore more than one user cannot have the iPhoto album open at the same time which is highly irritating.
    b. Moving the iPhoto library to a disk image - this strikes me as a highly messy solution, not least because you have to guess what size your library will grow to in the future (or build in massive surplus). It also appears to mean that time machine back-up will not include the photos.
I haven’t actually yet tried either of the above for the reasons noted – please correct me if I am wrong.
A possible better solution would be to have iPhoto reference all the photos from a conventional folder structure which looks to be possible, but I have seen online that this does not work very well with iPhoto and I don't want to waste my time trying it if it isn't going to work.
Perhaps you gurus out there can let me know if there is a neat solution to meet 1. and 2. If there isn’t, can other software packages (e.g. picasa) meet these needs and is there any major drawbacks in terms of integration? I wanted to stick with iPhoto as Apple products are meant to work seamlessly with each other.
Furthermore I have another ‘nice to have’ requirement:
    3. It would like to be able to access my photos remotely via a browser or otherwise. It would be even better if I could access them on my iPad (but I don't want all my photos (c.50 GBs) stored on the cloud or copied to the iPad).
I was looking at purchasing a time capsule. Can this be used to both enable 3. and hold wireless time machine back-ups? And if so, what software/app is best i.e. can iPhoto or other software also enable this ?
    Thanks is advance!

    1. I want to share a photo library with other users of my iMac so we can all edit the photos. Ideally the library should not need to be open or closed on one user profile in order to be useable by another.
Yes with limitations - iPhoto is not a multip user program - the best way to share it is on a direly connected external drive with permissions ignored - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198 -  you are incorret that having the iPhoto library on an exterenal drive prevents TM from backing it up - TM is very happy to backup external drives - in the TM preferences under options just be sure that the EHD is not excluded
    2. I want to be able to back-up the mac including the shared photos using time machine. Ideally the mac should hold the master copy so the back-up is on the external HD (if the master and the back-up are both on the external HD then it doesn't provide security against damage to the drive etc)
Of course you can - this is not an iPhoto question but a Time Machine question but yes - TM does not appearently backup open files so you need to be sure that iPhoto is not running all the time - and of course you need two external drives - one for the iPhoto library and one for the TM backup
    3. It would like to be able to access my photos remotely via a browser or otherwise. It would be even better if I could access them on my iPad (but I don't want all my photos (c.50 GBs) stored on the cloud or copied to the iPad).
No - you can not access the iPhoto library from a browser or an IOS device - you can put photos on Flickr or Facebook and acceess them via a browser  from eithe an iPad or a comptuer
ANd no you should not use a referenced library - it has many problems and does not accomplish anything you want - in fact it has no advanadges at all and many drawbacks - see the user tip on Photo and FIle management for more information - https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/iphoto?view=documents
most of your post is not about meeting sharing and backup needs - thos are easy and described above - most of it is about wnating it to work differently than it does because you think that is better --  it actaully does woerk like it works and will do what you want - you appearently aren't happy with that and want it to work differently
As to other software - that is beyond the scope of this Iphoto for Mac suport forum
ANd yes a TIme Capsule is an excellant extrnal hard drive and works very will with Time Macnine

  • IPhoto with Multiple Users

I read as many of the help subjects and discussions as possible before giving up - I just bought a new iMac G5, set up a network at home for a new printer, the old Powerbook and my fiancee's computer (cough cough, a Vista machine...). All going fairly well so far, but....
...I have been trying to get all of our photos organised using iPhoto. What I wanted to do was to create one library for me (under my User ID) for my "old" (ie pre-finacee) photos and have one similarly set up for her under her User ID. Then we could have a shared library for our "together" photos going forward (oh, so romantic etc etc).
I have used iPhoto Buddy before for juggling different libraries, so thought that the following would work - each of us have iPhoto Buddy installed, enabling switching between our respective personal libraries (all of the iMac - am not trying to do this over the network) and a common shared library saved on the Users/Shared/ folder. I have ensured that the permissions for the latter include read / write for both of us. However, while this is working fine for MY user ID, every time she switches to the shared library, it is only a matter of time before she gets an error message saying there has been a problem saving to her library and that changes may have been lost (ie DEFINITELY have been lost!).
I also tried an alternative idea, scrubbing iPhoto Buddy and just using [Option] when entering iPhoto from her ID to select the Shared library, but the same problem occurred.
That is, the new shared library appears unstable when accessed from her User ID, but not when accessed from mine. How is this possible?
Any ideas on how to achieve my aims (or, less importantly, what is causing the problem)?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I don’t see that iPhoto Buddy is any help in this situation.
iPhoto sharing using the Shared folder is deprecated in 10.5.
There are two ways to share, depending on what you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
Finally: If you’re comfortable in the Terminal, and understand File Permissions, ACL’s etc., some folks have reported success using the process outlined here . (Note this page refers to 10.4, but it should also work on 10.5). If you’re not comfortable with the terminal, and don’t know an ACL from the ACLU, then you’re best doing something else... Oh, and the warning about simultaneous users still applies.

  • How can i fix my mac book pro. My safari crashes all the time, my screen will turn black for no reason, My iPhoto crashes during upload from my iPhone, I can't highlight anything and I can't drag anything.

Someone PLEASE help me! I cant figure out what is going on with my computer.  I don't install anything weird, but my brother does.  He's very good at computer tech stuff and is in I.T, but I cant help but blame him for all the problems my Mac is having.  Nothing works like it should.  My safari will randomally crash, my screen will randomally turn back, my iphoto will crash during uploading from my iPhone, I cant highlight anything, I can't drag anything.  When I want to click on something, I have to click over and over again just for it to even register.  I know everything is up to date and recently reset my PRAM.  I'm running Lion and have a lot of room on my hardrive.  I have an external harddrive and I'm wondering if I should just move all of my important files over to it and completly wipe out my computer's hardrive and start from scratch.

Some folks can't leave well enough alone, and insist on downloading all sorts of additional "stuff" that ends up making their Mac unstable.
Standard Mac OS X on properly-operating Hardware does not crash, unless you start installing too many add-ons.
You can run "just the basics" by holding down the Shift key at Startup. This does one pass of Disk Repair, then loads a minimal set of extensions, and comes up in Safe Mode. If it works OK that way, but crashes in "regular", it's the add-ons.
There ia another layer of add-on junk that can be added to Safari. If the only remaining problem is Safari crashing, those add-ons can be disabled as well.

  • I would like to condense my iPhoto library

    Dear forum,
I am starting to be really disappointed about the unstable software upgrades in iPhoto.  Iphoto is continuously crashing in my Mac and this is really annoying. Tested so far all the various proposals I could find in various forums but nothing seems to work in a consistent way. My iMac is 7 years old and I have been told there is only a way.  Buy a new iMac and everything will work.
I would like to give last chance to Apple so I am going to buy the new iMac.  But  I have a 35Gb iPhoto library  that is used only for creating projects and books.  Unfortunately it is not in one disk,  being splitted in three HDs (the internal one and two external ones).  I know this is wrong but unfortunately I can't go back.
I do not use Apple products to manage my photo archives (about 700 Gb).  I use iPhoto only for making books.  I have about 35 books and various other projects I do not want to loose moving to the new iMac.  But with the current version of iPhoto there is no chance to condense the library in one HD keeping my books  (unbelievable that this possibility is not existing!).  I have also iPhoto Library Manager,  duplicated the library in one single library but as you all know it does not keep the books and projects.
So if I want to keep my books in my new Mac I should keep my external drives!
I can't believe this is the situation and would appreciate indeed if someone could help.  I have tried with all the possible Genius support and it looks this is not possible.
It simply means that to solve software problems I need to buy the new iMac.  If I buy it I will loose my books and projects unless I keep the old external HD.
I would really appreciate some suggestion.
    Thanks
    Luca

This is not possible - an iPhoto library can not be split in any way - it is a single entity and can not be split up - do you have several iPhoto libraries each independent of the other?

Guessing that you have several iPhoto libraries there is no real reason to consolidate them - just move each of them (each will need a different name) to an archive folder in your pictures folder - switch between them by depressing the option key and launching iPhoto or using IPLM
Also with a new Mac and Aperture you can consolidate libraries - not sure if Aperture consolidates books but suspect it will - however given the way you use iPhoto I see no reason to consolidate

  • IPhoto 6 crashes when launched... database rebuild also crashes... HELP!

I've got about 3 yrs of pictures, which are backed up, but the "upgrade" to iPhoto six (which I now regret having paid for) crashes on launch every time. I tried all the tricks I could find in this forum:
the cmd-opt launch, and each of the rebuilt options, separately and in combination. Every time, iPhoto crashes when it tries to load this library (it worked for about a week, and for several imports). I've also tried:
    - trashed the prefs files before doing above. No help.
    - trashed the data folder and thumbnail files before above, also no luck.
    - trashed prefs, made new library, imported all photos from originals... got the pictures, but 3 years worth of comments and organization is gone..
Is there ANY way to fix that darn database? Any way of extracting the data to re-apply to a new database? Any way of writing the metadata into the actual picture files, so we don't have to depend on this unstable database for the metadata?
I haven't lost the images, but that metadata was really a lot of work. I'm thinking really hard about switching permanently to another package. iPhoto is the SOLE reason I bought iLife, and it trashed my stuff. I'm really disappointed in the quality here, and in Apple's unwillingness to help me solve the problem (they just directed me here. So much for the "90 day support").
Any pointers, advice, etc, would be very welcome!

  • IPhoto S-L-O-W & Crashes Routinely

Let me start this post by saying that I have fallen in love with all things Mac since I made the switch from the Wintel world in May. However, I have had a dreadful experience with one piece of Apple software - iPhoto - which is, of course, the topic of this post. Virtually every action in this software package, from moving a slider bar, to clicking a button, to reducing a photo, to applying a modification, initiates a labored hard-drive spool-up, a l-o-n-g time lag and the spinning kaleidoscope of death. 80% of the time I attempt to download new photo's from my digital camera iPhoto crashes. I am using all new, top-of-the line Apple hardware/software, and a new Sony high end digital camera. I am open to the idea that my software preferences are not set correctly, or that I am somehow missing a big picture item. However, if this is not "pilot error", then I must say this software package is a piece of SH*T, and certainly not representative of the other Apple products I've purchased (and that list is long). Do the guys at Apple know what a slug this thing is? and how unstable? why can't this product be made to work FAST and reliable, like iTunes for instance? I'd appreciate any feedback or instruction which will move me down the road to iPhoto enlightenment. Thanks.

What camera are the photos from? Nikons and some others cause bloating of the Library.iPhoto file in the iPhoto Library folder and causes slowness. How much free space do you have on your HD? Since you just got it in May I'm guessing you have at least 15% free or more. Correct me if I'm wrong.
You can try clearing out the various caches and run the cron maintenance (unix) scripts with OnyX. Your first restart afterward will be slower but will get back to normal on the subsequent starts.

  • Iphoto crashes every time I open it

I'm working on a Mac Pro with 3 GHz processor, 48GB 1866 MHz and 512GB SSD with Yosemite 10.10.1.  And iPhoto 9.6.  I have been working on an iphoto library housed on an external drive (LaCie D2 Thunderbolt 2/USB 3), but I have the same problem when I move the library onto the MacPro.
I was finishing a photobook, making a map page, and iPhoto crashed.  Ever since, iPhoto now crashes upon opening.  As mentioned above, this occurs also if I move the library onto the MacPro and try to open it from there.
I would love some guidance on how to get iphoto open with this library as the book took a huge amount of time to make   Thanks so much.

I tried it on two diffrent MBP and another Mac Book Air. No chance to repair it! iPhoto crashes in every Mac with my Mediathek. The problem started while upgrading to Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6
Crashes can be caused by corrupted media in a library. If one of your image files or videos should be unreadable, it can crash iPhoto on any mac, if you are trying to work with the same mediathek (iPhoto library).
Or if you are having the same third party software installed on all Macs, the same can happen. Older versions of third party applications may have installed system modifications - system extensions, device drivers, video codecs. And the presence of these modifications  makes your mac unstable and can crash your mac, even if you do not launch this software directly.  You may not notice, that this older code will be used.
Have you tried to run iPhoto while being booted in Safe Mode? That will deactivate non-standard extensions. If iPhoto runs correctly in Safe mode, you have installed something, that is not compatible with your current system.
See this link:   Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
