Iphoto upgrade has lost my photos

Hi,
I have just upgraded to iphoto '11 version 9.4.3
After opening it, the last 12 months of my photos have just dissappeared!?!?!
I do have a back up from a week ago, but my daughters first birthday pictures were at the weekend and I really am asking if anyone knows if I can recover my photos without a back up?
Thanks

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Iphoto upgrade it says your photos will not be readable following update. Will my photos be lost?

Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iphoto after the upgrade. Some may be on the cloud but how can I save them? I haven't backed anything up and can't open iphoto to try. I/ve copied it onto my desktop but can't open that either!
Please help a t otal idiot!

Before you do anything else make a backup of your iPhoto library. Disk drives do fail regularly, and one day all your photos will be gone for sure, if you do not keep copies on a different drive.
You can simply drag theiPhoto library from your Pictures folder to a different disk to create a backup copy.
iphoto upgrade it says your photos will not be readable following update. Will my photos be lost?
You misunderstood the warning.  When you use a new version of iPhoto with yiur iPhoto library, the older iPhoto version will no longer bea ble to read the library, but naturally, the new version you are using now, will be able to show your photos.
So proceed  with the update - that is a routine warning, and is necessary, to be able to use your iPhoto library with the new version of iPhoto.

  • IPhoto library has lost all my landscape photos.

Hi,  My iPhoto library has lost all my landscape photos (the thumbnails are there, but no photos when you try to slide show them).
I've tried reverting to original and restoring the library.  No luck.
I have them all in a back up outside of iPhoto - as individual jpg files.  Can Iphoto help to re-import the missing ones bring them back into the library?
I'm hoping to avoid having to start from scratch!!!
I don't know what caused the issues - I haven't made any changes to the back end!!!
    Thanks.

    If that doesn't help...
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Iphoto only has a 500 photos but takes up 300GB.

Iphoto only has a 500 photos but takes up 300GB. I think it is duplicating all of my originals, as the photos are heavily edited. What can I do?

Even though you have 500 photos, they can stil take up 300GB of space but that does sound rather high. Rarely are two photos the same file size.
    Open iPhoto.
    Double click a photo.
Click Info bottom right corner of the iPhoto window.
    You'll see the resoluation:  Example  1488 x 1984
Then the file size: Example 1.3 MB
Go to ~/Pictures. Right or control click "iPhoto Library" then click Get Info
The exact iPhoto library size is noted under General.
as the photos are heavily edited
Editing photos can increase file size.

  • I am running iPhoto version 9.6 on a 2012 iMac using OS X Yosemite 10.10.1. One event in iPhoto has lost all photo information, and the photos are viewed very small.

One event in iPhoto version 9.6 has lost all the original photo information, and views the photos as very small.

started in 2007 and transferred to my latest Mac in 2012.
How did you transfer the library to the new Mac?
How did you upgrade the iPhoto application and library after upgrading to Yosemite?

  • Working on iPad2, I can create new albums from digital camera imports in Photos; however, when the album is automatically imported into iPhoto, it has lost its custom photo or ding and replaced it with a chronological order. How do I reorder them?

Is there a way to preserve the album order and format when it moves from Photos to iPhoto for easy export sharing or advanced sideshow treatments? Can I create the albums on the iPad in iPhoto and format with custom photo ordering? Or do I have to carry and work in Mac?

This is normal and is how Apple handles photos.
    There are NOT duplicate photos.
Just as a song is in your itunes library and you can access that exact same song from a playlist,  all  photos synced to iphone are in the photo library and those exact same photos (NOT duplicates) can be accessed from the individual albums.
It is working exactly as it should.

  • IPhoto has lost my photo library?!

iPhoto says I have 6000 photos, which I do, but only 800 appear anywhere on the site. One day they were there and a couple weeks later, the next time I wanted to get to them, they were gone. Help?

I have an aperture library of work photos and 2 of my personal photos. And what's on the cloud. And don't even get me started on Dropbox, which imported every work photo I have two, three, sometimes four times, thereby maxing out my dropbox account--and I had told it no before it took them all. At least it only took the work photos. Trying to get them off is an absolute nightmare.

  • IPhoto upgrade deleted all my photos - how do I restore them?

Hello, I have just upgraded my iPhoto and it appears that this has deleted all my iPhoto library. Any advice on how I can restore my old photos?? iPhoto appears to have started up as a new user and doesen't have any record of any or my photos or albumns.
    Many thanks

I also lost about 4000 photos, folders all empty, after putting older iphoto library onto external hard drive and opening it with updated iphoto.
found the photos  in the pictures folder (although anonymously as jpegs, have to open them to identify them) but how do i return them to iphoto? and why are the other 5000 photos still visible in iphoto?
when i open the package contents in the iphoto library on the external hard drive there is a folder called originals which has all the photos in, but iphoto seems not to be pointing to it.  hard to explain what i mean but basically the photos exist, i photo library doesnt see them, the other iphoto library on the computer that came with the upgraded version is fine.

  • Help!!!!! iPhoto 11 has ruined my photos stored on an external drive!

I have been having numerous problems since upgrade to iPhoto 11.  I moved my library to an external SeaGate GoFlex Network drive for more space.  But I just added 22 pictures, got the wheel of death for every one. and then when I tried to find the library, it kept creating multiple iPhoto Libraries.  Only one of which has my current photos and the other has all my other photos.  How do I get this software to consolidate libraries and to remember that my library is on an external network drive?

What format is the external drive? To operate with iPhoto it must be Mac OS extended (journaled)
How is it connected? For succerss it must be a wired connection - not wireless
How were you "trying to find" the library? looking for a library can not create one
If the iPhoto library is on a properly formatted drive properly connected then having iPhoto use it as the default is simply to depress the option key and launch iPhoto and use the select library command

  • IPhoto Library's Lost All Photos

    OS 10.4.10
    Ibook G4
    1.5 GB Ram
    iPhoto 5.0.4
    Hi,
My first time on iPhoto group.
I've been using iPhoto successfully since I got my mac, 2 years ago.
I may not be using many of the features available. I download digital
pictures, and I take pictures of web pictures with the key code ctrl/click >
    Download to iPhoto.
Today I took a picture and got a couple of windows. I can't recreate them
now, but they said something like "Can't find iPhoto Library"
When I open the iPhoto application, none of some one hundred pictures show
    up.
I recall starting a full backup to external HD, and learning the export
part of iPhoto. I did it. Then I had to stop the back up because I had to
do something that the backup interferred with. In an export, don't the
original pictures stay in the application?
I have some things in my Pictures folders. There are a few scatterred
pictures from my collection, but not the whole thing.
    Where does "Export"export to?
I see now that many of my photos are scattered in my Pictures folders along
    with my .pngs.
There are also lots of files that look like this <DSCF0001.jpg> but they
don't open. A window pops up that says
"Couldn't open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that preview
    doesn't recognize."
Of course, Iphoto doesn't open in Preview, does it?
I have a feeling I messed something up when I "exported".
Any way I can recreate my collection?
I know I've never gotten past just downloading the pictures and having all
of them remain on one iPhoto screen. I've never gotten into rolls or
    libraries etc.
    Thanks,
    Rafael

Is there an item named "iPhoto Library.photo library" or similar in your "Pictures" folder, showing with an icon like a fan of pictures?
Or did you store your iPhoto Library in a different folder, perhaps on an external drive?
if you cannot find your iPhoto Library search for it with Find Any File, as described  by Old Toad in this post:
Re: My iphoto library has disappeared. How do I find it?

Re: My iphoto library has disappeared. How do I find it?in response to onpurpose
Download and use Find Any File to search for a file named "iPhoto6.Library".  It's a file unique to all iPhoto libraries.
FAF an search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, packages and system files.  If there's another iPhoto library hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.

  • Iphoto upgrader has caused a problem, iPhoto will no longer open its library

I had an old dvd of iphoto pictures which I wanted to bring into my current version of iphoto, I downloaded the iphoto upgrader and did as the instructions indicated but it seemed like I was in a loop, when I selected the library from the saved photos, the imac would indicate that I had to download the uopgrader (which I had, this is were it kept looping)  So after several attempts I gave up, but when I treid to open my existing iphoto it came back with the same mesage saying
To open your library with this version of iphoto, it first needs to be prepared.
to prepare the library, use the iphoto library upgrader avaialble from Apple
So now it seems I cant access my existing iphotos ( I cant even tell you what version of iphoto I have as I cannot look at the "About iphoto" as it is greyed out)  My imac is 2 years old.
Any help would be appreciated as I seem to have gotten myself into a hole and have no idea how I got there and more importantly how to get out.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what do you get when you launch iPhoto?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?
    Happy New Year

  • IPhoto restart has lost everything

I have just opened my laptop to get a photo from iPhoto (where ALL of my photos were stored). When I opened it it asked me where to get it's photo library from, but there was no-where to select so I just clicked to continue.
Now that it has opened, I cannot access ANYthing that I used to have saved to my iPhoto. Does anyone know where this would have gone, or how I can re-access all of my photos?
Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to give me.

Thank you. It found three things..... One of which lead me straight to this:
Should I do something with one of these? The other two were the following:
Thanks so much for your helps so far!

  • Photo book has lost its photos

I recently deleted some old photos from my iPhoto Library and now, a photo book that I had created (and already purchased one copy of from Apple) is having some issues. The photo book shows up in projects, the photos themselves appear in the preview pane running along the top of the edit pages but in the larger preview pane there are no photos and iPhoto says they are gone when I go to purchase the book. Is it because I deleted those photos from my Library? Why do the photos show up in one preview but not another if they are truly gone? Of course I have emptied the trash on both the hard drive and in iPhoto...
Reason I ask is that I want to order more of the photo books but now think that I have completely screwed the book up and lost my photos. (I know, I know...I should have backed up those photos but didn't realize that they would disappear from a completed, saved project.)
    Anyone have any insight?

iPhoto works similarly to iTunes. All your photos are in the Library and each Album or slideshow, book or whatever is a subset of that Library. Remove a pic from a Book or Album and the pic remians in the Library. However, remove a pic from the Library then it is also removed from all the Albums, books etc that include it. A similar paradigm exists in iTumes between the Library and Playlists.
So that's where the photos from your book went - you put them in the trash.
To save a book forever you need to keep the pics it contains.
I still want to put my Library on my external and get rid of it in my hard drive
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    Regards
    TD

  • IPhotos has lost my Photos when upgrading to Yosemite

When I upgraded to Yosemite like many people I have seen on forums there was a issue with upgrading the iPhoto library when upgrading to 9.6.  Finally it looked like it had worked but now all of my photos do not appear in iPhoto.  The files seem to be there still as the iPhoto library file is still1.26TB in size (i have a lot of photos).  I have tried doing a full rebuild of the Library but it did nothing.  I also purchased iPhoto Library Manager but this does not help either.  Please can anyone help?
I am using iPhoto 9.6, OSX 10.10 (Yosemite) on a iMac (27-inch, Late 2013).  The Library is stored on a "My Book Thunderbolt Duo", 8TB in raid 1 configuration.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
