Iphoto upgrade message question

I have a new Mac mini (my first Apple product).  I transferred a few hundred picutes to it from my old PC.  When I try to download some new pictues from my camera, it says I have to upgrade my library.  What does this mean and what will it do to the existing picture files?

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Then try to import the photos from your camera to see if you can.  If you can that means that the problem lies with your original library.
If that's the case and if you have the space available on your hard drive and don't aready have a backup copy of the library.  make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Commadn+D) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • I recently clicked on an iphoto 'upgrade' message I received and now I cannot see ANY of my photos!!  Desperate for help!  Please.  Thanks.

I recently 'upgraded' my iphoto because everytime I clicked on it,  I got a message telling me to do it.  Now,  I cannot see ANY of my pictures. Very frustrating. I've already gone to 'software updates' and tried that to no avail.  Please,  anyone... HELP!!!  Thanks!!!

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.

  • There are too many questions "like" mine, so here it is: I updated from Mountain Lion to Yosemite, I can't open iphoto 9.1.5, I am directed to the app store, I "accept" iphoto upgrade and enter my credentials, but no update occurs. :-(

Attempting iPhoto upgrade from 9.1.5 to 9.5.

How many questions like yours should there be? What exactly do you expect the volenteers here to do about what you personally consider "too many questions"?
To move to iphoto 9.6 (required for Yosemite) You must log in to the App store  using the Apple ID that was used to set up the compter (or purchase the application if it was purchased later), backup your iPhoto library and then download and install iPhoto 9.6 from the App store
If that is not working then you must contact App store suport - link is on the right of the App store window

How can i stop the upgrade message appearing everytime i open iphoto?
It's getting ridiculous that every time i open iphoto that it insists in being upgraded and repaired. Anyone know how i can get rid of this without reinstalling it?
    Thanks

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto upgraded Library but now won't recognize photos (they're still there but in "Old" folders)

After I started up iPhoto this week, it gave me the "your library needs to be upgraded" message.  I let it do that, then it said it needed to update thumbnails and I let it do that.  Then it opened my library but there are no photos - I get the standard startup message as if this was my first time opening iPhoto.
My library file still shows a size of almost 300GB, and I can go through the package contents to find my photos, but they won't show up in the application.  After the upgrade, they're now listed in folders named "Old Masters", "Old Thumbnails", etc., and there are replacement folders in their place (named the same but without the "Old" in the title).  These new folders are empty.
It seems like I should just be able to delete "old" from the original folders' names and let them take the place of the new versions, but I don't want to do anything that will cause even more problems!  Any thoughts?
FYI: I'm on a new late 2014 Mac Mini (3 GHz Intel Core i7 with 16 GB memory) running Yosemite 10.10.2.  My iPhoto library is stored on an external hard drive which is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - it's the same drive I've used for a long time.
    Thanks for your help!

This has been affecting some folks for the past while. Having the Library on an external seems to be part of the issue.
Have a read of this thread
Yosemite, iPhoto 9.6 upgrade, large photo library is not recognised.
there's a post by Zaxe on the second page that has a fix. Worth a try.

  • Problems with iPhoto upgrader on iPhoto 7.1.5. HELP!

I installed and ran the iPhoto upgrader for iPhoto 7 in preparation to install a newer version of iPhoto (9 or later) so that i can get photo album and books printed via iPhoto.  I downloaded a number of available iPhoto 9 upgrades, but none worked even through i had run the upgrader.  I am now stuck with a MacBook (OS X 10.7.5) with a version of iPhoto that won't open (error message: You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto) and also wo';t allow me to install any iPhoto upgrades.  Help!  I have tried to restore iPhoto from time machine, but that hasn't worked, plus trying the original install disk for my laptop hasn't worked, presumably because i have upgraded the OS a few times since i got it (it's a late 2008 dinosaur of a macbook!).  I am worried that now i have lost my photos and will have to pay 50 quid for a iLife disk with no guarantee that it will work.  All i really want to do is un-install the upgrader and return iPhoto to it's original 7.1.5 state.  Is that possible? Also how can i check that my photos are still stored somewhere without being able to open iPhoto? Please help! Thank you.

You only need to run the upgrader if you have iPhoto 9.5.  It's not needed for other iPhoto 9 versions, i.e. 9.0 thru 9.4.3.
You might be able to downgrade that library by following this iPhoto LIbrary Manager tutorial: Fat Cat Software - iPhoto Library Manager Help - Downgrading a library to an earlier version of iPhoto

  • Unable to share from iphoto using Messages....

I have upgraded to Mavericks and have noticed that I can't share a photo directly from iphoto using Messages. Anyone else have this problem? I got an error message once that said something like "couldn't communicate with helper application". Usually when I try to share a photo I don't get an error message, nothing happens at all. Any help would be much appeciated.

I only started experiencing this problem (iPhoto Couldn't communicate with helper application) after upgrading to version 10.10 and haven't been able (yet) to find a solution or work-around to this issue. Anyone???

Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. More information means you get better assistance. (And no, more exclamation marks do not get help faster or make your issue seem urgent. They just make it seem like you have a stuck key )

  • IPhoto has a question mark over it. Wont open! Help?

iPhoto has a question mark over it. Wont open! It is completely inaccessible. How can i restore this to my computer and get my pics back?

iPhoto has a question mark over it.
You mean in the Dock?  Then the Dock icon is no longer linked to the application.
Did you upgrade MacOS X, so iPhoto is no longer compatible?
If you moved or deleted iPhoto, reinstall it. It will depend on your iPhoto version and MacOS X version, how to reinstall.
If your profile signature ""OS X (10.6.8)" is still valid, reinstall iPhoto from your system install disks, if iPhoto came preinstalled on your Mac, or from your iLife install disks.
If you already upgraded to Yosemite, you can reinstall iPhoto from the App Store.

  • Iphoto will not launch after lion and iPhoto upgrade

"your iPhoto library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable
Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.
This is the message i get after paying apple3 0 dollars for the lion upgrade and 14.99 iphoto upgrade. Can you now help fix?? you have my money. Now give me back my computer

Do as the instructions tell you.
Hold down the Option and Command keys and launch iPhoto at the same time.
You'll see a dialog box open.
    Select:   Repair Database
    Or, restore from a backup.
FYI, Apple's policy states that, "all sales are final" >  iTUNES STORE - MAC APP STORE - TERMS AND CONDITIONS

iPhoto  upgrade wont install, and tells me to install from the purchases tab. That wont work either and I get this message

  • IPhoto upgraded - now can't see photos

I have Mountain Lion on an iMac and have got 10.8.2 installed and iPhoto 11 (9.4.1).
There are 2 users. My wife and me.
After the iPhoto upgrade following installing 10.8, I got the message that the library needed to be upgraded and that earlier versions of iPhoto would not be able to read it. I duly clicked upgrade and everything works perfectly.
My wife did the same thing and her library was upgraded but now she can see nothing. The file structure is there - all the events and albums but they are just black squares. If you open an album, the photos are just black squares but if you click on 'info' all the picture data is there including locations shown on the map for the pictures with gps data. Her library still contains 15gb of data.
The same applies when opening in Aperture.
I have no idea what is going on or how to fix it and would appreciate any help. Thanks

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. It can take 3 or 4 goes for this to work

  • Upgrade messages idea

sometimes when i upgrade  i miss the messages because i'm busy doing something else, i leave the computer, or it's a big upgrade and i don't want to sit there and watch everything, etc.
i thought it might be a good idea to have a dedicated directory for upgrade notes, like /etc/pacman.d/messages /etc/pacman.d/upgrades, or something like that, where upgrade messages could be installed as a dated text file, or some other way (by application, etc.). then even if you weren't at the computer or were doing something else during the upgrade, you could just check the messages in the directory afterward and not have missed anything (and have to ask dumb questions on the forum ). anyone else think that would be a good idea?

byte wrote:Pacman 3 logs output from .install files to /var/log/pacman.log ... it's not very pretty (as there is no standard on how to format such messages) but does exactly what you want.
i don't see any messages in there, though, just a log of what packages were upgraded. :?:
just to clarify, supposedly there was a message with the recent xfce4 upgrade to run grep -r /opt ~/.config/xf*  so you could upgrade your paths, and that message isn't in my pacman.log. i'm talking about stuff like that, and like when udev is upgraded there's a message to check the udev readme.txt file, etc. it just seems like it would be convenient to have those preserved so in case you missed them as they roll by during the upgrade you can just check them later.
