IPhoto - Using Other Photo Sources

I have had my Mac for a while now.  I use it mainly for editing photos and videos and sharing them across my home network through Apple TV and also via SafeSync - a file synchronisation application that enables all the devices in the home to have access to the same photos.
I'd like to stop using Windows Live Photo Gallery as my method for editing and start using iPhoto.  HOWEVER - I still do not seem to be able to point iPhoto at a folder on my Mac as the source of truth - i.e. my SafeSync folder where all my photos are stored - surely this is possible ?
Can anyone help me out in explaining how something like that is achieved ??
Thanks in advance.

It's difficult to pitch an answer sometimes. If I assume you know more than you do I sound obtuse, if I assume you know less than you do I seem patronising. Bit of a rock and a hard place. Apologies if I've got that wrong.
The key issue here is the lossless processing. iPhoto uses masses of virtualisation. When you edit a photo in iPhoto the original file is not touched, rather your decision to, say, fix red eye is noted in the database and when you view a shot it's your original shot that you see, with the decision superimposed on it. In a nutshell, this means that when you edit in iPhoto there is no edited file, your original file is untouched. Therefore this:
I load photos into my HD folder.  That same folder is synchronised across multiple devices.
simply will not work. You import you files, add them to iPhoto, fix red eye (or whatever) and what do the other devices see? They see the file as imported from the camera. Still with the red eye.
So, to let other devices see the edited photo you would need to use Photostreaming - assuming the other devices support that. And that means your entire current system is of no use or benefit.
(Or, you could tediously export the finished shot out of iPhoto to this synced folder... but that rather negates the use of a lossless processor...)
So, assuming that you do want to use iPhoto this synchronised folder is no longer of any use. You would simply import the shots. Edit them and so on and then share them via Photostreaming. It's a whole new way of working.
Further, I'd read up some on what can actually be shared out of iPhoto via Photstreaming - I'm not sure face tagging can be.
As for this specific question:
Why would importing from that folder and having iPhoto simply reference those files not be recommended ?
In your case two reasons:
1. because the folks synced to that folder won't see the edits, only the original files
and in a more general sense
2. because iPhoto is not very good with Referenced Libraries, and experiened users recommend against it. FOr more on that read this:

  • How can I make a book in iPhoto using some photos and a lot of text-- recipes--written in ms Word2011?

I'm trying to make and have printed, a small cookbook of favorite recipes using my photos as illustrations. Given the themes in iPhoto, writing in Word2011, it doesn't seem to work as a click and drag into designated spaces. Only photos work with too limited text. Any ideas?

Place it the book, right click on it and fit to frame

  • Import problems iPhoto and other Photo software

    Hi there,
I am a new MacBook Pro owner with Leopard 10.5.1 and iLife 08. Absolutely impressed by the system, but a bit disappointed that importing JPEG formatted photos from files sometimes results in garbled photos in iPhoto and Aperture, even though the originals are simply fine. Tried to used other software like GIMP, but the issue remains.
Is this a known Mac OS X problem? If so, does anyone have a solution for it?
I would be eternally grateful for any help I can get on the issue.

    Hi Terence,
Thanks for answering. The photos have all been stored on my FAT32 formatted external USB 2.0 harddrive that I used with my old XP system. And the majority was taken with a variety of digital cameras (Toshiba, HP and Sony) and some were scanned in with a HP flatbed scanner.
I do not know how to check the color profile of the photos on the Apple system (I am still a newbie) and I did not look at them yet on my old XP system (but I will, but I am not near the system at the moment).
Would the color profile have anything to do with the problem?
    Thanks for your answer!

  • Missing EXIF data when using other photo apps besides "Camera"

I have recently been trying to use the EXIF location and camera info information created with images in the iphone 3GS and noticed that the only image files that have the full EXIF data attached when imported to my computer are the images created using the iPhone native Camera app. I have numerous photo apps that take great photos which when downloaded are missing almost all the EXIF data.
What is up? Is apple requiring third part apps to strip the data or somehow blocking them from capturing the EXIF location data for download?
I know many of these apps are using the location data to geotag the images and link to maps.
    Thanks for any info!

Thanks, I posted it there! Actually I have been searching for some site to officially post a bug report to Adobe, but didn't manage to find it myself...

  • What will Apple do after they do not support iPhoto?  Will photo stream be eliminated?  I will no longer be able to use aperture, so have signed on with LR & PS.

What will Apple do after they do not support iPhoto?  Will photo stream be eliminated?  I will no longer be able to use aperture, so have signed on with LR & PS.

Just because Apple will no longer support IPhoto or Aperture doesn't mean that the versions that are still out there still won't work, function or still do what it is designed to do.
I do not like all of this offsite, Cloud service storage, anyways. I rather have easy, trouble free access to all of my data locally.
I am still planning on using the current versions of IPhoto and Aperture as I am not moving any time soon to Yosemite or any newer OS versions based on it. I still use a lot of legacy software that I simply can't afford to upgrade any farther.
Plus, I use other photo book sites other than Apple's own service, anyways, because these other services offer more products and are far more flexible than Apple's own print services.

  • Is iphoto duplicating my photos in ios7

I can see every photo on my camera roll in the iphoto app, & when I delete the photo in iphoto it is still on my camera roll. Does this mean that iphoto is duplicating my photos and thereby using up space on my iphone?

    Hello Zed,
Thank you for the question.  The iPhoto app references the photos in the Photos app.  Deleting a photo from the iPhoto app should delete it from the Photos app as well.  Use the steps below to delete photos:
    Delete photos from iPhoto
iPhoto uses the photos and video clips that are stored in the Photos app on your device. If you delete a photo from the Photos app on your device, the photo is deleted in iPhoto (unless the photo has been edited, captioned, tagged as a favorite, or used in a web journal, slideshow, or photo book).
You can also delete any photos you took with your device, and any photos you imported using the iPad Camera Connection Kit, directly from the Camera Roll album in iPhoto. You can't delete photos from iPhoto or the Photos app if you synced them to your device using iTunes.
You can also hide a photo, so it remains in the Photos app, but doesn’t appear in iPhoto.
    Delete photos
Depending on how your photos and video clips were added to iPhoto, do one of the following:
Photos and video clips taken with your device: In iPhoto, tap Albums, tap Camera Roll, tap to select the photos, tap , tap Delete Photo, and tap Delete. The photos are deleted from both iPhoto and your device.
Photos and video clips you synced to your computer using iTunes: Connect your device to your computer and, in iTunes, deselect the photos and video clips you want to remove from your device. Click Apply.
Photos in the Beamed, Photo Box, iTunes, or [App] album: Tap a photo, tap (tap Edit if you don’t see the tool), tap Delete Photo, and tap Delete.
    Delete photos from iPhoto

If you are not seeing the changes in the Photos app after deleting a photo from iPhoto, you may need to quit and relaunch the application.  Use these steps to quit the application:
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app's preview up to close it.
iOS: Force an app to close

  • When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder, what happens if I delete the photo in Iphoto ? Will the original file in the folder be deleted too?

When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder to iphoto, what happens if:
    1. I delete that photo in iphoto? will the original file in the folder be deleted too ?
    2.  when importing, does the hard disk store 2 versions of the photo, hence occupying additional space in the harddisk?

1 - no  --  iPhoto only manages fiel within the iPhoto library - it does not ever do anything with files outside the library
2 - No idea what you are asking - by default (and strongly recommended) iPhoto copies the original to the iPhoto library and you delete the source file outside the iPhoto library - iPhoto alwasy has at least two versions of every photo and some times three - it always have the original, a thumbnail and once a photo is modified a preview - this is not optional - if it is not what you want then iPhoto is not the correct progrtam to be using for phopto management

  • How do I use new Photos to autoscan for faces like iPhoto did?

iPhoto used to have a feature to auto scan for faces. On Photos, I seem to have to go through photos one by one, or identify "unidentified" faces 1 by 1, then it will auto detect just a few more, which is HUGELY inefficient with 1000s of photos.(a lot already have "known faces" attached to them) . Looking it up in Photos Help is no help!  It says:
Rescan a photo for a missing face
Select one or more photos with undetected faces.
Choose Photos > Detect Missing Faces. In the Source list, an icon next to Faces spins as iPhoto scans the photos again. During this scan, iPhoto uses less stringent criteria than in the original scan. As a result, you may see more “false positives”—photos in which an object has been identified as a possible face.
To see if iPhoto found additional faces, select one photo at a time and click the Info button in the toolbar.
    Question:
there is no Photos in source list only ALL PHOTOS (FACES,LAST IMPORT, ETC.), nor in dropdown, so what do I do? I never get to the the spinning icon....
Also how do I find "undetected Faces" do I really have to go photo by photo?  Help me!!!!

  • Why can I see some photos in iphoto just fine, but then I will drag something in, edit it, and when I go back later it is not in photos or events. If I search my computer, I can find it, but it doesn't show up in iphoto. Yet other photos show up fine!

I am completely confused by this. Should all photos loaded into iphoto show up? What makes some different from others? Does it matter if they are on the desktop first, straight off the camera, or sent to me via email?? Why should they be different in any way? I just worked on 2 differnt photos - one was sent to me via email, placed on the desktop and dragged into iphoto. It shows up as an event.  The other was sent via email, saved directly from the email to iphoto - I went in and edited it and now it is nowhere to be found. Help!!!!

In your post here you say:
But I can find the photo when desperate by searching the computer through another system. When I find the photo, it has all the iphoto edits made, but it is NOT in iphoto.
What "other system" are you using to search? And, when you find the Photo, where is it?
Storing files in folders is not using a Photo program at all, it's just using the file manager for the job. You can do this on your Mac just as easily as on your Windows box, with the same advantages (it's easy to understand) and limitations (it's inflexible, limited and treats your photos the same way as it treats your text files.)
iPhoto is a different kind of program alright, and once you finish the learning curve - and for most folks, that's not very long - you may see some additional advantages over storing files in folders. Maybe you won't. It's not for evertbody, but frankly, "if all your friends" can "never find any photos they are looking for" when iphoto offers far more ways to manage, arrange, categorise and seach for your photos than the file manager does, then perhaps you need to look closely at your friends
Seriously: I post this for folks who are getting to know iPhoto for the first time. It's just one way of using the app, but it does demonstrate what I mean by being more flexible than the file manager:
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums exensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 39+k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • Why is "Photos" so awful?  iPhoto was simple, intuitive, easy to organize and use. Photos is the opposite of that.

  • I duplicated a picture and now iPhoto (11) is cloning that picture replacing all the other photos and only when I click directly on them I can see the real picture! How can I solve the problem without losing any saved picture? Shall I re-install? Thanx

I duplicated a picture selecting CMD and D but, suddenly, iPhoto (latest version '11) started cloning that picture and replacing all the other photos with it.
Only when I click directly on one photo I can open it and see the real picture it is.
But the preview is always the duplicated one...
I tryed to duplicate another picture just to see if it turned out ok but the only changement was the duplicated picture!
I started repeating the second duplicated one instead of the previous one but my issue remained the same.
So, how can you help me to solve this problem without losing any saved picture?
    Shall I re-install iPhoto completely?
Thank you very very much in advance!!

As Larry says, restoring the back up is the fastest and best solution. Otherwise:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Update:  I was able to have the correct photo show in my email as received on my iPad2 by changing a setting on my IMac prior to sending the photo on the email.
On the iMac, I went into iPhoto > Preferences > Email photos using > Mail (in lieu of "iPhoto").  This seems to have corrected the issue.  I'm not sure why.  Now the correct photo shows up when received on my iPad2.
