IPhoto ver. 8.1.2 locks up after opening

I am new to Mac and have recently bought a MacBook Pro with SN and iPhoto installed.
I recently completed downloading my jpg file photographs to iPhoto from files from a CD ROM and then I added some photos from a SD card from my camera.
iPhoto worked OK for a short period, but now if I open it from the dock it opens fine, but attempting to open any function causes the program to freeze and the only way I can get out of it is to use hold Cmd-Opt-shift-Esc for much longer than four seconds.
All the while the program has frozen I have the circular busy cursor running and I cannot open any other programs or carry out any other actions in iPhoto.
Can anyone offer any advise, please?

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • How can i get iPhoto to work? It locks up after I launch it every time single time.t

iPhoto has gone nuts!! it will not work and keeps locking up. Open the program and within a few seconds i get the spinning wheel of death. i have tried the basic fixes, the ones you get with you hold down command and options at launch, like rebuild library ect.
What can i do?? I have several thousand photos here and i do have a time machine backup.

Correct, the plists don't work in Mavericks the way they used to. Good news is, we've isolated it to that specific library. You said you already went through the rebuilds, lets try to do them again, but one at a time in a specific order.
    1) Repair Permissions
    2) Repair Database
    3) Rebuild Database
If that still doesn't work, try running these steps from TS4040:
    1) Run Software Update and install all updates (including the OS X Lion v10.7.4 Update, or later) until it reports "Your Software is Up To Date."
    2) Open the Get Info inspector for the account's Home folder:
In Finder, select Go > Home or press Shift Command H (⇧⌘H).
In Finder, select File > Get Info or press Command I (⌘I).
    3) If needed, click the disclosure triangle to expand the "Sharing & Permissions:" section of the Get Info window.
    4) If needed, click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the Get Info window.
When prompted, enter an admin user name and password, then click OK.
    5) From the Action menu (the cogwheel) at the bottom of the Get Info window, choose "Apply to enclosed items…"
    6) Click OK in the confirmation sheet.
    7) Wait for the process to complete.
If we're not able to access the library afterwards, I have a solution that should work, but would remove any albums, books, etc... etc... etc... that you had created in iPhoto and leave you with just your photos and events, so I'm trying to avoid that as much as possible. Let me know what happens.

  • Firfox 3.6.13 locks up after openning

When I open 3.6.13 it opens ok. Then when I try to access a website it locks up and is unresponsive. I have reloaded the program and shut of my AVAST anitvirus to see if that makes a difference. It does not. I have also scanned for spyware and viruses. No effect.
    Help
This just suddenly started two days ago

So, In my case on this problem, I have systematically narrowed it down to the Shockwave Flash plugin in the Firefox add-ons. When I disable this FF addon Firefox no longer locks up but it does disallow any Flash operations on pages that use them. The pages will still load and operate but the Flash files will not run. It's not a total solve yet, but it's more than Mozilla is offering here in this forum.
Don't un-install and re-install FF... it won't fix a thing. To disable Shockwave Flash (in version 3.6.13) go to a simple page like Google (that doesn't use Flash) and open Tools/Add-ons and select the plugins box at the top. Then scroll down to Shockwave Flash and on the right-hand side "Disable" this action.
I can only assume (that in my case) this addon has become corrupt and needs to be somehow removed and updated.
I hope that this helps some (if not most) who are having this problem and I will perhaps offer an update soon as to how to (simply) get Flash back working again in FF. But since I don't get paid by Mozilla I don't exactly have time to keep chipping away at the answer to their obvious "hanging" problem.

Before filing your bug report, make sure you can still reproduce the bug after updating with "pacman -Syu". Then in your bug report, make sure you provide information about what desktop environment or window manager you use.

  • IPhoto 8.1.2 doesn't respond after opening from the dock

i am running 10.6.7 on an imac purchased last fall. the iphoto has been a pain most of that time. it will open if i am importing photos from a digital camera (where inserting the memory card into the computer prompts iPhoto to open) but will never work when opened from the dock. the iphoto screen pops up and then I get the spinning wheel icon, and when I open the "force quit applications" utility, it tells me iPhoto is not responding and I have to force quit. are there any other answers out there besides "repair disk permissions"? that has not worked. thanks!

    Another test:
Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Upgrading problem iphoto vers 9.3

    Hi
    Can anyone help ?
I upgraded to Iphoto vers. 9.3 and when opening my library i was asked to upgrade the photo library.
So i accepted. It now runs throug 9 steps but when reaching step 5 after 98% it just stays there and nothing happens.
It is a large library but I left it for like 8 hours and still the same. Now I have uninstalled Iphoto and reinstalled it and still the same.
    What to do ?
Thanks if anybody can come up with a solution.
    Best regards
    N

So, after I tried all the solution advices, and failed to rebuild the exting library, I went ahead creating a new library and importing 20,000 images right now.
The following is the steps I took.
Added .bak extention to the existing iphoto library
    Started the iPhoto app
Chose to create a new library in the dialogue window
Created a new folder "pictures" on my desktop
Then opened the content package of the iphoto library I just named iphoto library.bak
Moved the content of the "Masters" into the new folder "pictures" I just created
Went to the iPhoto's menue bar and clicked on "File" and chose "Import to library"
Chose the "pictures" folder to import
Now it is still importing because I have 20,000 pictures, but it seems I will have all the pictures in the new "upgraded" iPhoto.
I am hoping I did not lose any detailed information of each images.
This upgrade was terrible. "Upgrade" should be "better" in many ways and should be easier to use. It has given many of us nothing but the trouble and many hours wasted on it. I don't understand why change something that was working fine into this?
Hopefully Apple doesn't start turning into Microsoftish. I converted the computers of my entire family into iMac because primarily it presented almost no technical issues compaired to Windows when I switched mine from Windows to iMac. I know my family members gonna give me hard time on this painful upgrading experience.

  • System lock-ups after upgrading to Tiger

This topic was previously posted in 'Installation & Setup'.
After 3 days (and 18 views) I got no replies.
Maybe that forum was not appropriate, so I decided to try it in this forum.
About 4 months ago I exchanged my 80 GB Hd in favor of an 200 GB Maxtor 6L200P0. One day later I upgraded OS X 10.3.9 to Tiger (retail DVD).
At that time I experienced a frequent (several times a day) lock-up of my system.
No messages, nothing, not even after powering down and restarting.
After some time I figured out that the lock-ups occurred on Internet access. Clicking on a link in Safari, posting messages on Discussions. Even Mail locked the system a few times. Also Corripio (artwork and lyrics finder for iTunes) caused the system to lock.
After that, I decided to perform an Archive & Install (first time after almost 4 years of using this Mac). Except from having to re-install a number of 3rd party apps. the system seemed to perform well. No lock-ups were experienced for a few weeks.
    Problem solved, I thought.
Although far less frequent than before, I do experience those annoying lock-ups a few times a week.
    Here are my questions:
What could be the cause of the lock-up?
Is is advisable to perform a Clean Install? What advantage do I have of, it opposite to performing an A&I. I'm reluctant to perform a clean install at the moment, because I haven't found a few serials of commercial and shareware applications yet ( I know, I should have written them down :-/ )
Any hints/tips to track down the exact cause?
    TIA
    M
P.S. ( I do have a bootable complete backup of my HD on an Maxtor Onetouch II )

    Hi, M.
    1. You wrote: "What could be the cause of the lock-up?"The number of potential causes range from disk corruption or bad applications to serious hardware problems, such as a defective logic board.
    2. You wrote: "Any hints/tips to track down the exact cause?"I suggest treating the "lock up" problem — better described as a "freezes and hangs" problem — similar to a kernel panic as the basic troubleshooting and hardware testing steps are virtually the same. See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ.
It provides a comprehensive roadmap which you should follow from beginning to end, in the order specified in the FAQ.
    2. You wrote: "Is is advisable to perform a Clean Install? What advantage do I have of, it opposite to performing an A&I."The term "Clean Install" does not apply in Mac OS X. That is obsolete Mac OS 9 terminology. The closest Mac OS X equivalent to a "Clean Install" is an Archive and Install with the Preserve User and Network Settings option, which it sounds like you've already tried once previously, but you may want to try again as part of the troubleshooting process I outlined above. See my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ for some important tips on this process.
    The other options are:
    • Archive and Install without the Preserve User and Network Settings option: This reinstalls the OS and wipes out both your accounts and your network configuration, but preserves the previous System folder.
    • Erase and Install: Erases the hard drive, i.e. Macintosh HD, and reinstalls the OS from scratch, preserving nothing: your accounts, network settings, and everything else on the drive are deleted.
Of those two, and since you have a bootable backup, the second (Erase and Install) would be the second-to-last thing you would try, the last being taking the machine in for service.
    Good luck!

  • Intermittent lock up after boot

My T60 will occasionally lock up after XP boots. No mouse or kbd. I have to press the power button to shut it down and after a reboot, it works fine. IF I play with the mouse cursor as soon as it appears on the screen at boot up, it never locks up. I've tried updating the BIOS, no help. If I start the unit and let it boot up without pressing any keys or moving the mouse cursor, it will lock up.

    Welcome to the forum!
How's your battery? I had a couple of machines that use to lock up like that due to defective batteries...
    Cheers,

  • IPhoto 9.3.2 crashing on startup after upgrade to 10.8 then 10.8.1

    Help,
after opening iphoto this morning and importing a bunch of photos from my camera I started getting constant crashes. I successfully imported the photos (first connection), then I took some more and connected my camera agian for a second import. Shortly after that iphoto (9.3.2) crashed. At that stage I was running 10.8. I have unable to successfully open iphoto all day - at least 20-30 attempts. I have restarted. Verified and repaired disk permissions. Verified the disk. Ran a hardware test. No apparent problems and no improvment to iphoto. I downloaded the 10.8.1 upgrade this afternoon - no fix.
I have ran the rebuild with iPhoto Library Manager - built a new library but could not connect to iphoto to complete the library copy/rebuild.
This is not the only crash problem I have been experiencing with Moutain Lion. I have also had similar, yet not as persistent, problems with iTunes - requiring a new libary rebuild. This caused all of my apps to disappear off my ipad. They still existed in the media files (music/itunes/media/etc) but had to be manually copied back to the itunes lib.
Also third party apps are crashing. Vectorworks 2012, Livesribe, Endnote X5.
Upgrading to Mountain Lion was the worst apple software experience I have ever had. I'm a 10-15 year user.
It took me clean installing 7 times. Back tracking to Snow Leopard, then a new user install of 10.8. Took me 4 days and required too many time machine recoveries. I seemed to have some serious corrupt file issues rleated to using migration assistant over a number of machines????
I digress.Back to iPhoto. Any ideas of this error report:

I was having a similar problem.  After upgrading to iPhoto 9.3.2, it was continuously crashing when I tried to open it.  I re-installed OSX, upgraded to Mountain Lion, checked my memory, installed a new HD, deleted every plist, db, and cache, did a complete re-install of all of my applications and data only to have none of it work.  The final solution was very unsophisticated, I installed an old version of iLife11 which "broke" the installation of iPhoto (it wouldn't run at all) and then I installed a fresh copy of iPhoto 9.3.2.  Problem solved!  I certainly don't guarantee that this will work for anyone else, but I wanted to pass it along just in case it works for someone else.

  • In iphoto, how do i save a photo after editing, in the same or higher file size, it's saves in a lower size

in iphoto, how do i save a photo after editing, in the same or higher file size, it's saves in a lower size

It's rather more complicated that this.
iPhoto is a lossless editor. You don't lose any quality on your shot in iPhoto.
The file size you see reported is the size of your iPhoto Preview: this is what gets used if you access the data via a media browser. It's a "good-enough-for-most-uses" version of the shot. Email it, upload to websites, use it in Presentation, Word processing file etc
If you want to set the quality yourself then Export the photo using the File -> Export command.
You can choose to export to Jpeg, Tiff or png. Tiff is lossless but the file sizes are up to 10 times larger. Jpeg allows you to choose different qualities: High, Medium or low. The difference is the amount of compression involved. High quality means very little compression. It's not unusual for photos exported at this setting to have a larger file size than the original.
Which setting you choose depends on the use you intend. Further editing, printing then high is important. Sending to Facebook? Well low will do just fine there as they're going to trash the file anyway.
But the key point: the file size only becomes an issue when you export.

  • I have suddenly become unable to access photo library  iPhoto (vers 9.5) on my external drive.  And time Machine will no longer back up to the same external (LaCie) drive.  Appreciate all suggestions.  The drive does show up on my desktop....

I have suddenly become unable to access photo library (iPhoto vers 9.5) on my external hard drive.  Also time machine isnt backing up to same external hard drive (LaCie).  The drive does show up on the desk top, but when i open iPhoto the library isnt listed, so I cant option click.

First, one should not try to run an iPhoto library from the same volume/drive that is being used by Time Machine for backups.  TM will continue to fill up the drive thus squeezing out iPhoto from being able to be opened and used. Also that doesn't allow you to let TM backup your library as it does with other files on your boot drive.
If you partition the EHD into two separate partitions you can run the library from it but that won't let TM backup the library which is important.
Are you able to see the library on the EHD via the Finder?  If so copy it back to your boot drive and open it there.  You may have to do some fixing on it.
Solution is to either run the library from the boot drive or get a second EHD to run the library from and let TM back it up along with your boot drive.

  • How do I resolve this error message? The iPhoto library is on a locked volume.  Reopen iPhoto when you have read/write access, or reopen iPhoto with the Option key held down to choose another library.

    Hi j,
I don't know if this will work, but I'd try logging in to an admin account, going to your main library (not user library), opening it, opening Application Support, selecting iPhoto, hold down the command key and press i, click on the lock in the lower left, entering the password and making sure you have Read & Write privileges for System and Admin.
