IPhoto Version 6 and 9 Interoperability?

I have my photos organized by iPhoto 6.x on an bootable external HD using OS X 6.8. I want to use the same photo library with iPhoto 9.x and then again with iPhoto 6.x.
Will iPhoto 9.x modifications to the photo files cause any problems with iPhoto 6.x?
Will the iPhoto 9.x modifications be apparent in iPhoto 6.x?

Will iPhoto 9.x modifications to the photo files cause any problems with iPhoto 6.x?
Yes - it is impossible to do that
When you open an iPhoto 6 library with any newer version it will notify you that the library will be converted and can no longer be used by the older version
Will the iPhoto 9.x modifications be apparent in iPhoto 6.x?
No since If you accept that then iPhoto 6 will no longer be able to access that library at all

  • Saving photos from iphoto version 8

Hi. I am new to this, so sorry if I am asking a stupid question. I am using iphoto version 8, and have transferred about 400 photos onto this. I am worried about losing all my pictures if I lose my mac (or if it gets stolen) - is there a way to save all the pictures somewhere else just in case? Do I need to copy them onto a disc or is there a better way? I would prefer not to copy all the pictures to a public website. Thanks so much for your help.

This is a very sensible question.
You have the same back up options for your photos as you have for any data on your Mac and you should use them!
You can burn your Library to CD or DVD using the Share -> Burn Command in iPhoto. Personally, I do this about twice a year and keep those disks across town in a relatives home.
You can back up your files to an External Hard Disk
You can upload your files to storage on the Internet: Use .Mac or any of the similar services such as Amazon's S3. These are not photo viewing sites, just file storage.
And, you can also use sites like Flickr for storage too - the pics do not ahve to be available to the public, but can be restricted to you and people you invite.

  • How can i view and upload photos from an older version of iPhoto which are on an external hard drive to my new iMac?  i currently have copied the application version 9.4.2. on my lacie backup and want to view and upload this to my new iPhoto version 9.5.1

our old iMac died suddenly, but i had backed up the iPhoto application to a lacie external hard drive.   however, when i try to open it in my new iMac which is installed with version 9.5.1 and is upgraded to maverick, it comes up with “cannot be opened, to open you must upgrade to latest version” and then makes you press the quit button.
the iPhoto version on the external hard drive is iPhoto 9.4.2 which i upgraded on 29/11/12 onto our old iMac (early 2007 version)
my new iMac is running on version OSX 10.9.1
i have looked at buying  iphoto library manager and have emailed them about whether this would work, but any advice would be gratefully received as i cannot be the only person that has had this problem but i cannot find any answers that work.
    thanks
    Julie

YOu can rebuild with Library Manager and this does not require a purchase:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I am using iPhoto version 9.6 and I can no longer get an email sent with a photo attached. I get an error message saying the email did not go through because the server did not reply. I can send the photo with Mail. Help!

I have upgraded to Yosemite and also updated the iPhoto application to version 9.6. I am no longer able to send a photo from iPhoto via email. I get an error message saying the server is not responding. But, when using the same server in Mail, I can attach the photo and send it. My wife is using the older version of iPhoto and it works fine.
I have checked the settings for the outgoing server, etc. and the Mail settings match those in iPhoto.
Could this be due to either the Yosemite upgrade or the iPhoto upgrade?

This solution is for those of you using 2-step verification for your Apple ID and are using iCloud as the mail server that you are trying to mail photos with.
I too had this issue. The problem in my case occurred because I had setup 2-step authentication for my Apple ID. If you have done this then you will get the error message "the mail server did not recognize your email/password...". To solve the problem go to:
    https://appleid.apple.com
    Click "Manage Your Apple ID"
Verify your identity with the device you selected (if this step does not show up then you have not likely set up 2-step authentication and this is not your solution)
Click Password and Security in the left column
    Click Generate an app-specific password
Enter iPhoto as the name of the app
Copy the password and paste this into the password box in iPhoto where you would normally enter your apple ID (in the mail account section in iPhoto preferences).
    And...voila' (I hope)

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • I just created a new iPhoto library with holding the option key down and then opening iPhoto with version 7.1.5.  I changed the name of the first library to iPhoto library 1 and now I all my photos are gone.  My operating system is Mavericks.

launch iPhoto wile holding down the option key and select the original library - when you create a new library of course it is empty
And you seriously need to backup your iPhoto library and purchase and install iPhoto '11 version 9.5.x from the App store and download and run the iPhoto library upgraded \then run the new iPhoto - 7.1.5 is not fully compatible with Mavericks

PS you also need to update your profile - it states that you have OS X 10.6.8

Select your My Book Studio for Mac icon on your Desktop and type Command + i to bring up its Info pane.  Check the formatting.  It should look like this:
If it's not formatted as such you'll need to reformat it after backing up what's on there now.

  • What iPhoto version is compatible with Lion OSX 10.7.5 and will it let me make photo calendars?

What iPhoto version is compatible with Lion OSX 10.7.5 and will it let me make photo calendars?
I have just upgraded from Leopard to Lion (via Snow Leopard) because I could no longer order photo calendars with iphoto 7.1.5.  However, I still have iphoto 7.1.5 and need to upgrade this.  From the App store it looks as though I cannot get iphoto 9.5.1 due to the incompatibility with Lion.  I was recemmended not to upgrade beyond Lion due to the age of my iMac computer (2008 version) by Stormfront staff.
What is the best iphoto to upgrade to and how do I do this e.g. iLife '09 or '11, or are there any other 'stand-alone' versions of iphoto that would be compatible?  How do I know whether my computer is capable of upgrading to Mountain Lion?  I definitely want to be able to make photo calendars, books and cards.
    Thanks

iPhoto '09 or '11 - purchase an iLife '09 or '11 DVD (amazon or eBay are potential sources) and install iPhoto and update to the latest version for your OS

  • Hallo, after upload my iPad air and my iPhone 5 to iOS 8 (and later Mac to Yosemite, version 10.10), I don't find in my iPad air and in my iPhone 5 photos I can see in iPhoto (version 9.6) on my Mac's Cloud.

hallo, after upload  iPad air and iPhone 5 to iOS 8 (and few days ago Mac to Yosemite, version 10.10), I don't find in my iPad air and in my iPhone 5 photos I can see in iPhoto (version 9.6) on my Mac's Cloud. I tried to add manually from library to iCloud's streaming photo with no result. in iPhoto's events I've 940 photos, in iPhone and iPad about 450. I have in mobile devices only photos taken with iPhone. thank

There is no warning there, only a recommendation...
We recommend that you update to the latest version of iPhoto before placing your order,
On 10.6.8 you can update to 9.2.3.
You really need to rethink you're computing habits. Using a computer without a back up is like driving without a safety belt. Updating the OS and applications without one is like driving blindfolded and drunk without a safety belt...
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

This is a message you got?
If so, as your post isn't clear, it may be a bogus message caused by a corrupt database.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

    Bad information
Updates from previous ov iPhoto '11 are free - upgrades from older versions like iPhoto '08 are purchases - you can run your current version under Mavericks if you do not wish to upgrade

Books are no longer supported with iPhoto '08 (a roughly six yeal old product) - you can purchase an iLife '09 DVD from someplace like Amazon or eBay and install it - iPhoto '09 is still supported this year

There is no download aside from the one in the Mac App Store available to people running Mac OS X 10.6.6 and newer. The other way of getting iPhoto 9 is to purchase iLife 11 on DVD. As iLife 11 requires Mac OS X 10.6.3 or newer, it's usually best to update to 10.6.8 for free and then use the Mac App Store version.
