IPhoto Video problem

Great! Create a video in half an hour! An hour later and I still can't even find my videos from iPhoto, can't import them and on top of it some of my photo's in iPhoto are greyed out.
Fantastic first experience!
Tried the solutions that worked for some others - close iMovie, duplicate video, open again. Did not work.
Help anyone????

If I stll have video on my card then I will try to load it again,
Do all videos from the new camera have the same problem? Then it could also be a problem of the card. If you have a different card, you could try to record another video for testing and check, if that will give better results.
Here is a list of videos, that are supposed to be supported by Aperture. Since iPhoto and Aperture share the same library format, I expect that iPhoto will also support them:
Aperture 3: About Video and Audio formats in Aperture
The list is not complete. Other cameras may be supported, but have a look at the codecs and formats. You will not be able to open arbitrary formats.  ANd AVCHD video is not directly supported, see:
Using AVCHD video with iPhoto '11

  • IPhoto video problems when upgraded to Lion

    Hi,
I just recently upgraded my MacBook Air (10.7.3) to Lion and I now have trouble with some of the movies that were in my iPhoto library, they can no longer be opened and I get the error message of "A necessary data referrence could not be resolved." The file info indicates that it is a movie mpg file, but it just won't open or play.
Does anyone know what I need to do to "recover" the mpg files so they can play in iPhoto?

    Thanks Terence,
Unfortunately it did not solve the problem. It should be the file where the jgp files are but not the movie. In iPhoto, the file info show it as a video with a size of 10.2 MB, but it will not play.  I can not find this file anywhere other than as a jpg. It is almost as if when I upgraded, the mpg files were converted to jpg but still referrencing in iPhoto as mpg. Any other suggestions?

  • Problem viewing selected iPhoto video event full screen in iMovie.

How do I view selected iPhoto video full screen as an event in iMovie?  It always plays the last import instead.  I did follow the instructions, but that does not work.

    Adrian...
I'm having the same problem!!!!  Mine use to sort from new to old and it changed for some reason?
I spoke to apple care and they said it mimics the iphoto order... but it doesn't... I've tried everything, including reversing assending and decending in iphoto.
Like you said, it seems trivial... but it is a pain to scroll to the bottom for everything!
    Someone help us

  • How can iMovie deal with iPhoto video better??

    Hello,
My 10 year old son has really taken a liking to home movie creation with this digital camera recording video clips. The regular digital camera that records video clips by default imports clips as .avi into iPhoto.
He then uses iMovie to find those clips in "iPhoto Videos" in iMovie. He then creates the movies and shares it to iTunes to put on his iPod Touch. Here lies the problem. He is filling up my hard drive! His user account iPhoto library is 65g and he does not have a tremendous amount of videos but when I reveal in finder to show the details of an iPhoto video it shows the folder (year and month) and I see other related folders that go along with this video. Although his videos are usually 5 minutes he speeds them up or slows them down with other effects and I think that is swelling the iPhoto Library with some of these folders being up to 2g each.
    What is the best workflow?
I tried putting his entire iPhoto library on an external but when running iMovie some the the project lost links to the associated events. Don't forget these events right now are stored in iPhoto because it is from a digital camera, not a camcorder.
    Option 1:
Is there a way to bypass the import of video into iPhoto? Each time the camera is connected it imports to iPhoto. If I got a card reader and we took the SD card out and then imported would iMovie take over or would iPhoto still import if video and stills are on same card?
    Option 2:
Import normally to iPhoto, then manually drag video clips to separate folder and 'import' them into iMovie as separate events. BUT then we have to remember to go back into iPhoto and delete those videos. That would put the video into iMovie and store it there and not into iPhoto. What a lot of work?
    Option 3:
Buy a small Kodak video web recorder and will iMovie take those in as videos?
I am assuming that storing these things in iPhoto, editing in iMovie, is creating this clutter. Please advise if this is the root of my problem. Why have these relatively short video clips consumed my iPhoto library? I think it is the effects, speed up movie ( he likes to make the voices sound like chipmunks and speed the songs up) that is creating addtional associated file in the iPhoto library.
I think it would be better to run independently in iMovie and not have all this associated with clips stored as iPhoto Videos?
I have 4 gigs left on my 250 gig HD.
    ANY help would be appreciated!!!

Importing into iMovie isn't the problem. My pal seems to be under the impression that footage transferred from the camcorder directly into his PC using Vegas (which apparently saves it as .avi) is of higher quality than footage transferred to Mac via iMovie that's then copied for him as .dv files.
I always thought that since .dv is the native format for the camcorder, then that's the original, raw material.
So, my question is really whether when this guy is playing back and editing in Vegas, if the footage transferred to his computer directly and saved as .avi is really better and sharper -- or whether Vegas is simply is tweaking the .avi footage for optimal display in a Windows machine.
In other words, once the final, edited footage is saved, will a .dv file be worse than an .avi file.

  • Why does a Safe Boot fix my video problem?

After visiting my local Genius Bar twice (and getting two different answers), I erased and reinstalled Snow Leopard 10.6 on my late-2006 "white plastic" iMac.
I reinstalled the version of SL that came with the iMac, then upgraded it twice to OS 10.6.8. Software Updater says all of my OS components are up-to-date.
My video-corruption problems ("ghosting", "tearing", pixelation of icon, then the kernel CRASHES within 20 minutes) appear when I boot normally. But they permanently disappear when I reboot into the Safe Mode!
I've search Apple.com and every other site I can find without a clear answer to this:
What extensions, StartUp items, software daemons or gremlins DO NOT load in Safe Mode? Shouldn't one of them be the cause of my problem? Or does Safe Boot work on a hardware-level, too?
This happens on ALL accounts, both Admin and regular users. No external devices are connected except the wired mouse and wired keyboard.
I've zapped the PRAM three times, and I've unplugged it for hours. Disk Utility shows everything is good, too. There's about 50 gigs left on the internal 750 GB hard drive.
The so-called "Geniuses" both ran their Triage OS off an external drive and my iMac hardware passed ALL of their tests. One said it just needed a reinstall (a free fix!!), and the other said my video card is bad ($800, and I have to use an outside repair shop).
Can someone give me an idea how to proceed? I've been working in Safe Mode for days, but that prevents me from using: Sound, my home network, fonts, Preview, editing in iPhoto, etc.
    Thanks.

    Hi, Mike,
    Thanks for the quick reply.
I read the linked post about QE, but I don't see how it could help me troubleshoot my problem. Could you clarify: is QE a piece of "software" (that is, a file -- like an extension)?
If QE IS a piece of software that is disabled in a Safe Boot, I should be able to move it to my Desktop and restart. If my video problem is eliminated, the QE software is the problem, right?
But then, if my problem is caused by a file/extension, why would the problem occur (and be eliminated in a Safe Boot) right after I re-installed the OS? Shouldn't all the System software be pristine right after re-installation? But since it's NOT fixed by the re-installation, it seems like a hardware problem -- like the expensive video card. That's what's confusing me.
So, I'm proceeding as if the problem is caused by a file being loaded into memory and I'm trying to disable the items that don't load in Safe Boot Mode one-at-a-time. I just need a specific list of what those items are (and their locations on my hard drive).
In OS/9, I used Conflict Catcher to do this automatically, but I haven't found an OSX app to do the same. So I'm trying to do it manually.
Please excuse my layman's terms. Any help is appreciated.

  • How to move Projects and Events with iPhoto video included in iMovie '11?

I work with a group of educators using iPads for video. One method for getting their clips into iMovie '11 is via iPhoto and then using the iPhoto Video link in iMovie to get the footage on a timeline (trying to import directly into iMovie '11, using the iPad as a "camera", has proved inconsistent, especially with footage from iStopMotion or Filmic Pro 1 and 2).
The problem is, when it comes time to copy or move an event and project, the iPhoto clips don't come along; they are dependent on the iPhoto library, so you can't continue editing on a different machine. I tried File > Consolidate Media, but it was inactive (in my test project, all clips came from iPhoto). If I look at Reveal in Browser, it goes to the bowels of the iPhoto library. If I copy the project to another drive, it too, points to the iPhoto library (if I'm on the same machine; otherwise it doesn't see it). I also tried optimizing the footage in the hope that it would create an Event with optimized clips that I could then transfer.
Am I missing something? It seems nuts that you can't transfer work to another machine without manually picking through the bowels of iPhoto. These days, lots of shooting is done on iPads and iPhones. Any help would be appreciated.

My suggestion would be that in the future, they upload photos only to iphoto, and upload video clips directly to iMovie. In the early days of iOS, going through iPhoto was the only way, so it is a habit that I have had to break.
With iOS 5 and 6, iMovie now recognizes the iPhone and the iPad as cameras.
I agree that the Consolidate Media command should bring over iPHoto movies along with the photos. I suggest that you go to iMovie/Provide Feedback and let the developers know that you would like this feature.

  • Issue with recent "iPhoto Videos" not showing up in "Event Manager"

It has been awhile since I used iMovie '11 on my MacBook Pro with Retina Display.  I believe the last time I used it was in September or October of last year (2012) as most of my editing I have been doing on the iMovie iOS app as it has been sufficient for the majority of my needs.  I was running low on storage on my iPhone this past weekend and so transferred off all my videos to iPhoto.
I had need to edit some of the clips I transferred off and imported in iPhoto yesterday and so went to iMovie on the Mac to do so.  It had to process the new files and then it upgraded the thumbnails to high resolution images and it was then I noticed that it did not recognize any movies after September of 2012 in the "iPhoto Videos" section of the "Event Manager."  I was able to go into iPhoto and locate the more current videos to insure they were there and that they worked (I was worried at first they did not transfer off and just deleted or were corrupt in some manner).  I have tried restarting iMovie, rebooting the Mac, etc. and nothing seems to work.  Oddly enough, I can manually import the iPhoto files and iMovie finds them that way and they do work when manually imported.  For whatever reason they just do not appear in the "iPhoto Videos" section of the "Event Manager."  I am hoping someone here has an idea on why the Mac seemingly decided to stop recognizing videos after a certain date (September 2012 as is the case here) and how I can go about resolving the issue.

I had to quit both apps, remove the plist file, launch iPhoto, then quit iPhoto, then launch iMovie... then iMovie asked about thumnails for videos and the iPhoto videos were back in iMovie.

  • Advice on my plan for importing iPhoto videos to iMovie

For the last several years, I've been importing both my iPhone movies and pics into iPhoto.  I'm wanting to move all my iPhoto movies into iMovie for better organization.
Over the years, I've not been a fan of the "iPhoto Videos" tab in iMovie (I'm still running iPhoto/iMovie 09 here).  Videos seem to go missing at times, and I like more specific events on my sidebar.
Here's what I'm thinking of doing after some research.  In iMovie, I'm going to File-Import-Movies.  Once there, I'm going down the sidebar to Media-Movies. Then I go into the iPhoto selection on the right and click on the event in iPhoto (I just arranged all movies/pics in iPhoto by Month taken).  Then, I select all the movies in that Event and Import over the iMovie.
This is where my first questions are - I'm given the option to "Optimize" and choose a size - "Full-Original Size" or "Large - 960x540".  My plan right now is to go with Full-Original Size.  Are there drawbacks to selecting Large as far as quality?
This question may not matter b/c right now, I think I want to "Move files" rather than "Copy Files"  If I move them, I no longer have the option of Large size or Optimization.  I can't figure out why I wouldn't want to just move them.  I don't won't two copies of the movie on my computer.  This makes sense right?
And if I move them, it removes them from the iPhoto section of the harddrive and puts them in the iMovie section, correct?  I've never quite understood the file management under the hood of iPhoto.
Thanks for any help/advice you can provide!

I am having the same problem.  I have posted bu no response.  I even went to settings to see if anything was wrong.  I thought there was a hidden date issue on my hardware but it is the same no matter what camera I use.  Any luck with a resolution yet?

  • IPhoto videos missing in iMovie 09's thumbnail view

Recently I imported a bunch of videos into iPhoto 09 from my camera, and when I next opened iMovie 09 it generated thumbnails for them as expected. But when it finished, only about a quarter of the videos were actually there in iMovie. They are all of the same format and everything and it is a random selection of them that for some reason didn't show up in iMovie. Since then I have added more videos to iPhoto in the hopes that when iMovie generated their thumbnails it would find the ones it missed but this didn't happen. All the new ones came through fine though. I've tried restarting iPhoto, iMovie and my computer but nothing worked. Does anyone know of a way to get iMovie to notice these files without having to make copies of them? (I tried the Import button which lets me find them through "Media" but I have to find each one individually and either copy it - which I would rather not do since the files are quite large - or move it, which means I could no longer open them through iPhoto). I also noticed that if I drag the video onto my desktop and re-add it to iPhoto then iMovie does notice it. The only problem with this is I have quite a large number of videos and to make copies of them all then delete them again, and have to find all the ones that are missing would be very tedious, but if nothing else works I will have to resort to this. Does anyone have any ideas or has experienced this before?
Thanks very much for your help

Unfortunately I think you have found all the possible fixes and they are all time consuming. It does sound like iPhoto isn't recognizing and allowing iMovie to then see the iPhoto Videos Library. A typical thing I suggest for folks with BIG iPhoto libraries is to do a iPhoto Library repair.
Hold down the ⌘ Command key + Option, then launch iPhoto. You'll get a dialog box with a number of check boxes. Not knowing exactly which of these is the one that will fix your problem, I say check them all and click OK and let 'er rip. This too will be time consuming as iPhoto reconstructs your whole catalog of photos and videos. If there's any damage it will correct that as well. Will it fix this problem of iMovie not seeing the iPhoto Videos, I don't know. You may also have to try deleting the iPhoto preferences .plist, but try the iPhoto Library rebuild first.

  • IPhoto videos not showing up in iMovie

I researched this topic in a couple of previous discussions and don't seem to find a solution for my situation. I have iMovie 09 and iPhoto 11. I have lots of videos in iPhoto that I shot with iPhone 4 this year, but none of them are showing up in iMovie. iMovie says "updating iPhoto library" every once in a while when I open up iMovie, but no movies show up under iPhoto view. Anyone knows what the solution could be?

  • Iphoto videos to imovie

I have videos on my iphone that are now in iphoto. How do I move them to imovie? I Selected file>import >movies and picked the album with the videos I wanted to import.  It appeared to show files being imported for about 1 hr but I cannot find them in imovie now.
From reading previous post I now know to import all movies into imovie to start with.  It sounds like others have had this problem too

    i'll tell u what i did...
    1. i movie asked to import video thumbnails of videos in iphoto, on first launch.
    2. i did that
    3. noticed dates on some videos were wrong
    4. deleted the thumbnails
    5. corrected the thumbnails in iphoto library
    6. opened i movie again.
    7. didn;t ask me to reimport them. there is no option to do that either.
8 mind u this doesn';t really import the iphoto videos but just creates thumbnails for them. so no duplicate copy.
    9. now it only asks me to import tbs of newer videos.

  • Iphoto video clips vanished

I installed ilife08 without any problems. When I ran imovie for the first time it imported all my video clips as I hoped it would.
After a little while playing around with the new programs I ran a software update which updated iphoto to version 7.0.1. Now when I go back into imovie there is no sign of any of the iphoto video clips. I can't find any way of getting imovie to rescan the iphoto folder. When I go to the import option I find that the iphoto folder is greyed out.
    Any ideas?
    Phil71

    ok an update....
re-importing the clips into iphoto did work. However to get imovie to put them back into its library I have to rename the files so that they seem different to the original. If I attempt to import the clips back into iphoto using the original file names imovie continues to ignore them.
This has to be something that has occured since the 7.0.1 iphoto update. Any new clip I add into iphoto since the update is added to imovie as expected.
The moral of this story is when installing ilife08 make sure you update iphoto to version 7.0.1 BEFORE running imovie for the first time!
Hope this helps someone.....now I need a drink!

  • Possible video problems in iTunes 8.1 [no grid or cover flow views]

I had posted this problem under iTunes, but mentors there suggested instead I connect it to a video problem
*"...my video drivers or other related problems I've had over the last two months with the iPhoto...*
*Ah, didn't know about that. Try re-posting it as a video problem in one of the other forums. It begins to look less like an iTunes problem."*
So, the problem is that I cannot get any other view in iTunes other than LIST. The grid view is completely non functional and is grayed out. The cover flow only shows as a black screen without any logo (such as the familiar music symbol). I never had this problem in iTunes until I upgraded to 8.1.
It is curious that when I select tunes from my **own playlists*, the grid view appears both in the "view choices" and its respective icon is NOT grayed out. That does not happen when I select genious playlist: then the icon is grayed out and there is a grayed out "View choice" in the pull down menu. The same problem exists in my own playlists whenever I select cover flow, however. It is always black without any images or logos displayed. It's an active choice in the pull down menu, and you can click on its icon...but nothing appears.

Perhaps, but this is not obvious to me. As I posted earlier, iTunes demonstrated cover flow capability in its prior version. Did it change once 8.1 and now 8.1.1 came out?
