IPhoto vs Aperature
I am a long time user of iPhoto. There are some new "plug-ins" in the market now, that seriously excite me, but as a plug-in, they won't work in iPhoto. There are currently 35K+ photos in my library. If I switch over to Aperature, what should I expect to happen to all my existing photos? Do I need to re-import them to Aperature? What happens to all my "faces" and "locations", - do they get lost? Should I try to maintain both applications, and if so, does that mean two libraries. I would assume that since both products are from Apple, that there is some internal linkage to bring the two together. Am I smoking funny cigarettes here? Any help apapreciated.
karl
The current releases of iPhoto and Aperture can share the same Library, so all your existing images, faces, locations, etc. in iPhoto should be preserved and available in Aperture. You can even continue to use both iPhoto and Aperture with the same Library.
Your profile indicates you are running Leopard (10.5) ... at this point you will need to upgrade to Mavericks. (See the tech specs for Aperture.)

When I import photos using iPhoto or Aperature, I get an option to delete them off the camera when the import completes. That feature is really helpful when there are deveral hynred photos in memory. How do I accomplish the same thing using Lightroom 4?
Thanks,
RobHamish, there are two important things you should know: 1) if you can recover your deleted photos using any software, then you can do the same thing with "delete after import" and 2) if you can recover after a format, you never did a format, which also brings up the fact that "reformatting" the card to preserve data integrity requires a "full reformat" where every sector of the disk is wiped and, by default, a "quick reformat" just rewrites the File Allocation Table to zeros, ALL the files are still on the card and can be recovered. It's the reason the military has special "secure format" options built into their devices, because even a full reformat leaves magnetic traces that can be recovered with the right software. A secure reformat actually write random data with characters numbered 0-127 to each sector, erases it, writes random data a second time with characters 128-255 and erases it, then finally writes specifically the value "0" to all sectors and then performs a full reformat which places the value "null" in each sector. Then you KNOW your data is gone, each sector has data integrity and can be safely written to again and no one can snatch your data once you've formatted the card.
Apart from the aforementioned arguments, not everyone removes the card to transfer data. Some people use a USB cable and some are now using wireless and I believe their is an IR transfer on some cameras. On cameras using MTP and PTP, some erase/format commands are not available directly over the connection.
However, my biggest concern is twofold, it presumes that Adobe knows better then I what should/could be done with my data and they are helping me "for my own good" (them's fighting words between liberals and conservatives, democrats and republicans) and secondly, it restricts options instead of expanding them. Who knows what possibilities exist or needs may or may not be fulfilled by some creative minds out there (I am constantly amazed at what people can do when given the tools they need) and having options is always a good thing. As was pointed out, if implemented correctly, no harm can come to your data because there is always two copies in existence until verification is made that the copy is a perfect match to the original. On the other hand, I have had cameras corrupt the original, so nothing is ever perfectly safe. However, the "observed" actual practice is that people use Lightroom, transfer the photos, then format the card manually creating the exact same problem as if the camera did it automatically (far easier to reformat while the card is in the computer than put it in the camera and go through all those menus) and thus they would lose the information anyhow. The people who are least likely to lose any data are those who transfer the pictures, then look at every one to assure you have it, then go back and delete them one at a time from your camera and, when empty, then reformat the card. Try doing that during a wedding shoot. Very few people are so disciplined. It is a feature that has outlived it's day. You are hard pressed to find any software besides Lightroom that does not give this option.
Last peculiarity, and maybe it is something I do, but if you shoot and save pictures in both Raw and JPG, when you transfer, onlt the Raw file is transferred leaving the JPG on the camera, but it you shoot just JPG it transfers the JPG and if you shoot just raw it transfers the raw, but it never transfers both. Did I miss a setting somewhere to transfer both copies to the PC? -
I am wondering if I need to keep my iPhoto program and library once I've imported all of my iPhotos to Aperature. Seems like I am using double the space. I'd rather only have Aperature rather than both programs if that makes sense
If you have the files imported into Aperture you don't have to keep the iPhoto database. Make sure they are really imported and not only referenced. Probably it's best to keep a back up of the iphoto database some time.

Migrate from iPhoto to Aperature...
Hello,
I've been shooting (digitally) wildlife & nature photography for roughly the past 5 years. I started managing all my photos in iPhoto but I'm looking to migrate to Aperature. But, I'm wondering if there's any sort of way to migrate settings set in iPhoto into Aperature? For example, my image ratings, keywords, etc. As I have 5+ years worth of images all organized in iPhoto, I'm hoping I wouldn't have to start from scratch moving into Aperature (especially consider how tightly integrated most Apple software is).
Any advice from anyone on this...?
Thanks,
Kristin.Ok, checked it out and it didn't have any information in regards to migrating images from iPhoto into Aperture and whether or not it imports keywords/rankings that were originally assigned in iPhoto.
Does anyone else have any information on this?
Basically, I'm trying to decide between Aperture and Lightroom and I know Lightroom won't import iPhoto keywords, etc. so I'm really hoping Aperture will (as, with over 15,000 tagged/ranked images, it would be a huge job to redo it all from scratch).
Thanks,
Kristin. -
Iphoto, imovie, aperature crash after mountain lion update
All of my iPhoto, iMovie and recently purchased Aperature crash after updating to Mountain Lion. I tried reinstalling the programs
after update ( per apple phone tech support. Did not work same crash. I took my computer to the genius bar and he suggested
making multiple "smaller libraries" or Aperature to fix the problem. The smaller libraries got it to stop crashing but Faces reset, and
all the photos and events are all mixed up not the way I had organized them all.
So I tried Aperature for $80. It crashes worse than iPhoto. The genius bar told me Aperature is designed for Large libraries and
iPhoto is not. I have over 500Gb of Photos or 40,000+ pictures. I have read some of the forums looking for a solution but I'm trying to
figure out what is the best one? Preference files? Going with the multiple smaller libraries? Not Sure. Here are the first lines of the
crash report if someone can please help. Thank You

This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. -
Import slideshows from iPhoto to Aperature
Will I be able to import slideshows from my iPhoto 08 and 09 into Aperature?
I doubt anyone here can answer you.
Try in the Lightroom forum HERE.
Good luck.

Hi,
I am a newbie to using RAW (new Olympus e520) and use iPhoto 09 in OS 10.5.6. I generally like my pictures from iPhoto (after I tweek them a bit) but am contemplating Aperture. Indeed I like the results I get from iPhoto better than what I can get using the latest Adobe RAW (via Elements 6) even though it has a nice interface. The iPhoto renderings seem just a bit better to me.
My question is: is the RAW rendering afforded by Aperture significantly different/better than that in iPhoto? I.e., is the RAW rendering a function of the OS or the specific program? In the Mac world this is not so clear. I'd download the Aperture trial but I tried Aperture some time ago (in the v 1.0 age) and did not like it. So I cannot now use a trial of the new version, alas.
Pardon if this has been discussed before but I could not see it.
I enjoy learning from these boards, thanks in advance.
TomFirst of all congratulations on purchasing an Olympus E520. You will simply love the Olympus DSLR cameras. I have a been a long time user Aperture and the new version Aperture 2.2 is simply superior to the initial version of Aperture. I shoot everything in RAW, and I find the ability to work with the photo's in a non-destructive format, amazing. You can't underestimate the value of not impacting your original RAW image. After all, that is why you shoot in RAW in the first place.
I have found the interface much easier in Aperture 2.2 and it is really worth the money. I have just purchased an Olympus E-30 so I am still awaiting for a RAW format capability for Aperture.
I understand your concerns about the previous version of Aperture, but one of the best features is that you can store your Aperture library and therefore referenced pictures on an external drive. This was not available in version 1.1.
For my money, Aperture is head-and-shoulders above everything else, and I have tried them all, Adobe Element, Olympus Studio, Capture One, and several others.
Cheers, -
Compare Aperature 3 for iPhoto vs: Aperature 3 standalone
I want to purchase Aperature3 as a new user. I see Aperature3 for iPhoto on Mac Aps store for $79 vs $199 for the standalone.
Are they the same product or is stuff left out of one of them? The product is Aperture. The current version is 3.2.2.
There is no "Aperture for iPhoto". iPhoto is a different program.
There is no substantial difference between the boxed version and the App Store version. Get the App Store version.

IPhoto library use in elements
is elements a plug in from the inspector tab in iphoto and aperature. do I have to export a photo to use it in elements?
You can set up the PSE12 Editor App in iPhoto prefs for external editing straight from the iPhoto Library and saving back into the iPhoto Library.

Elements Organizer 11.0 has no option to import my iPhoto library.
I have a MacBook 4,1, Mac OS 10.6.8, Photoshop Elements 11.0 and iPhoto 8.1 (iLife '09). Photoshop Elements Organizer 11.0 has no option anywhere to import my iPhoto library as described in the manual for Organizer 11. I've repaired my permissions, tried restarting multiple times and uninstalling and re-installing Photoshop Elements 11 and Organizer 11 with no luck. What am I doing wrong? Help!!!
If you have the latest version of both (iPhoto version 9.3 and Aperature 3.3) then you have no need to import the iPhoto library into Aperature as both iPhoto and Aperature can share the same library (so you do not duplicate your storage) -- http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5260

How to transfer photos from iPhoto 8.1.2 to aperture
I have all my photos in iPhoto 8.1.2 and I just installed Aperture on my Mac, but it keeps asking me to update my iPhoto to the newest version. I tried several times to update iPhoto with no luck. Any suggestions?? Thanks
KhaledI do not use Aperature but I believe it has the capability to import from iPhoto - if you upgrade to iPhoto 9.3 you can share your library between iPHoto and APerature 3.3

Picture book different than iPhoto?
Hi,
I am a recent uupgrader from iPhoto to Aperature. I have been making books for years using the template "Picture Books" from iphoto. I can find the "Picture Book" selection in Aperature but it is not the same template that is in iPhoto where I can choose photos from 1 to 16 on a page in different arrangements.
Any advice?
Thanks
BrettTry the "Modern Lines" theme, this will let you put up to 16 pictures on one page, Stockbook up to eight.
Regards
Léonie
P.S. If all fails, you can create a custom layout (Use the "Edit Layout" button), and add additional photos boxes to a page. You can save your custom layout. -
What off-site, online backup service works best with Aperature?
I would feel more comfortable with off-site backup for my 19,000 photos in iPhoto. I am thinking of moving to Aperature. I would like a service that would restore iPhoto or Aperature easily if my MBP hard drive should fail or corrupt my pictures. There are many from which to choose. CrashPlan looks good but I don't know if it would restore easily. I will appreciate help with this! Thanks!
I personally suggest a redundant back up plan. I use Time Machine and separate additional HDDs to back up data that I feel is important to me.
If you feel that an off site storage is a requirement, then that certainly is you decision. I just don't feel that it is worth that much effort.
I cannot comment specifically on the company you mention, but I have seen some difficulties with other similar services. I suspect that you have a lot of data (GBs) and the question is hoe long the restore would take and what guarantees there are in it's accuracy.
I do find Aperture to be a worthwhile application, but do not expect it to rival Photo Shop. It is a more sophisticate Photo in essence.

Pre-iPhoto library merging with iPhoto
Hi all, recently I got myself a new Macbook Pro with it came the latest iPhoto program. I have now approx 2.6 GB of photos managed by iPhoto. I actually quite like the program with face detection etcetera. My events are named like this: reversed date_description (for example 110430_Wedding). The reason why I use names like this is because in this manner in Finder the folders will be listed in the chronological order. I used this method before I started using iPhoto.
I also have a photo library of around 32 GB with the same file name structure as mentioned above and just using Finder to manage it. I would like to use iPhoto to manage both libraries and thus need to merge / import the libraries but have some queries:
- will iPhoto become sluggish after importing 32 GB with a total library of roughly 35 GB?
- if I import my older photos will iPhoto use the existing folder names for the events (or do I have to type it all in again)?
- if I import my older photos will iPhoto use the dates in the exif file to arrange the events (something which I do not want to happen)?
- if I export my merged library what will the names of the folders be called?
- what would be recommended as a backup strategy (manually copying it to an external hard drive)?
- would you recommend another photo managing program for me?
That is for now, I might find some more questions. Thanks in advance, macroen- will iPhoto become sluggish after importing 32 GB with a total library of roughly 35 GB?
No - iPhoto handles that size library just fine - it is rated for up to 250,000 photos
- if I import my older photos will iPhoto use the existing folder names for the events (or do I have to type it all in again)?
If you drag each existing folder onto the iPhoto window it will create events matching them
- if I import my older photos will iPhoto use the dates in the exif file to arrange the events (something which I do not want to happen)?
Yes - iPhoto uses the EXIF dates for photos - events can be sorted by several methods (view menu ==> sort events)
- if I export my merged library what will the names of the folders be called?
What ever you name them - when you export you say where to pace the exported photos
- what would be recommended as a backup strategy (manually copying it to an external hard drive)?
That is one way -- I use Time machine to create a time based set of backups p;us a nightly clone of my entire system including iPhoto to give me a bootable exact copy as of the clone time - plus an occasional Tm backup at a second location - my photos ( and other data) are valuable to me and worth trying to save from software/hardware/human failure
- would you recommend another photo managing program for me?
That is strictly a personal decision - I choose iPhoto - TD uses iPhoto and Aperature - Old Toad uses anoher DAM mostly and iPhoto for projects primarily

HT5260 No option to import iPhoto library to Aperture
I have just upgraded to the latest versions of aperture and iphoto (on 6th July 2012) and upgraded both libraries as instructed. Now I want to import my iphoto library into Aperture but when I selelct File>Import there is no specific option to import iPhoto library. I've seen this can be greyed out on other posts but on my aperture it was not there at all as an option.
I tried just import>library instead and selected the iphoto library. Everything was imported without another dialogue box to avoid importing duplicates (of which there are 1000s).
Can anyone help please?
I've tried restarting by the way! I've also got all the latest updates via software updateIf you have the latest version of both (iPhoto version 9.3 and Aperature 3.3) then you have no need to import the iPhoto library into Aperature as both iPhoto and Aperature can share the same library (so you do not duplicate your storage) -- http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5260
