IPhoto vs Aperture for new Book

I recently purchased Aperture and in the past I have made 3 books in iPhoto.
I am creating a new book and I looked at both Aperture and iPhoto and, to me, it seems that iPhoto is much easier and presented in a cleaner way.
Aperture does seem to offer more layout possibilities.
The new book is not a "for sale" item just a family and friends fun book.
Any thoughts on the ease and quality of the two applications for my needs.
And the benefits and pitfalls of each of the Apps.
Thanks
Greg

The benefits and pitfalls are just the inverse of each other.
iPhoto is easier, Aperture is more complex, iPhoto is less flexible, Aperture is more so. That's pretty much it in a nutshell.
Only you can know how much time and effort you want to put into the project, how much learning you want to do.

  • Solution to using Aperture for ordering books from other companies?

I am a professional photographer who has been using Photoshop CS3 to design and output books for Shared Ink, WHCC and others. While SharedInk does accept PDF files, they're complicated to construct in just the right format. WHCC will only accept properly-formatted JPEGs.
Of course, Aperture has its own notion of how to generate PDFs.
While Photoshop will open the pages of the PDF as individual JPEGs, it's less than optimal because the JPEGs will end up being re-compressed when they're saved, potentially impacting quality. So my objective was to somehow turn the Aperture PDF directly into JPEGs.
Well, it turns out that the JPEG files are embedded neatly into the PDFs that Aperture creates. And if you're careful, you can cleanly separate the JPEGs themselves into separate files. I found a utility that has a simple Drag & Drop interface which does just that. I haven't tested it extensively, but it worked in my very unscientific test.
So I end up with a folder of JPEG files in the highest possible quality which I can then upload directly to my lab.

    What?
Of course a JPG can include text. Like you can insert text in a picture in photoshop. ANd then save the picture with text as a JPG.
I didn't make myself clear. JPEG files are just pixels. Of course they can contain anything. But the "text" in a JPEG file is not editable as text after it's been saved as a JPEG.
But PDF files are loose containers that can contain pixels (as JPEG, TIFF, or otherwise), text (as actual text with fonts, etc), Postscript objects (like Illustrator files), and even hyperlinks and whatnot.
The reason all this is relevant to Aperture is when Aperture outputs a book, it puts every page into a PDF. If you don't use captions or text, then the page is strictly in JPEG format within the PDF. the Xpdf program can then properly extract it.

  • FOUND A FIX for Aperture/iLife '08 printing (aperture w/ new books, etc)

Albeit a temporary fix... here it is.
You'll need iLife '08 and a PDF viewer from which you can save jpgs or tiffs at or greater than 200dpi, 300dpi preferred.
I created a book in Aperture, exported it as a PDF through the print function, then opened it in Acrobat Professional (not your only choice for PDF software though), re-saved the PDF as JPEGs, and then imported them into iPhoto '08. Once in, I created a completely blank book and used the JPEGs as background images. Now you have an exact duplicate of the page layout from Aperture, that you were able to custom design and manipulate, in a fancy new iLife '08 book.
Lord knows I'll probably get burned in a few weeks when 1.5.5 comes out and fixes the issue, since I had to go out and buy iLife, but for now I can produce quality books for my clients and still use Aperture.
    cheers,
    Sean

Many people will turn off "Maintain Previews for this project" to improve performance. You can still have previews and share them with iLife, by generating them on command, using "Update Previews for this project". Make sure you have preview sharing turned on in preferences.

  • Iphoto vs Aperture for making photobooks

    Hello everyone,
I am looking to make a high quality photobook for my parents. I would love to use iphoto however it is very restricting in not allowing me to add more text than the different formats provide. Also I have been reading in the forums that picture quality through iphoto is rather poor BUT these are old posts (2006).
So my questions are:has the quality issue been addressed on iphoto 08 and does aperture allow for greater felxibility in positioning, editing and writing more text. Is the picture quality far superior?
I really don't have the money to spend on new software at the moment however I will sacrifice if Aperture is truly worth it. In the end I would probably only use it to create photobooks....
    Many Thanks,

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Only folks who have issues post here, so the few that have had a poor experience will, but the many who have been very pleased tend not too - it's for folks who have issues, after all. That said, I've seen very few complaints about the quality of the books and I note that folks usually have them quickly resolved by Apple. The key would seem to be time: order your book in good time so that if there is an issue you have time to have it dealt with.
Aperture uses the same Printing Service as iPhoto, but you do have more control over the layouts. Buying Aperture to only do this job though is akin to buying a drill so that you can use the butt end to hammer in nails.

  • Why apple forced us to buy iphoto and imovie for new ipad? it supposed to be free for new ipad?

i think iphoto and imovie should have pre installed in new ipad. Apple wants to make money of everything. i guess in future apple will make ipad without any application and everything have to pay to download from app store.

Apple didn't force you to buy anything at all including the iPad. You made the choice to buy the iPad. You do not have to but iPhoto or iMovie. Nobody is forcing you to buy anything.
As stedman already said - all apps cannot be free.

  • ICC profile for getting books/posters printer?

    Hey all,
Before I start using Aperture for getting books and posters printed, I had a question on ColorSync/ICC profiles. I'm by no means a pro, but know enough to get my color workflow in basic order.
A large poster I ordered through iPhoto came back with massive red shifting and huge loss of detail in the darker photos (it was a collage). Is there an ICC profile available that can be used so that when I soft proof with Aperture, it will give me better feedback on what photos printed via the printing service (Kodak) will look like? I really don't want to go through the hassle of getting more refunds...
    TIA!

If you are using an apple cinema display that has been color calibrated I think you will get the desired result. If you are not using an apple display then you will go in circles like it did.
I'd like to qualify this statement. You should have a new professional display and use software calibration like Monaco or Pulse Color Elite from Xrite to bring your display to standardized state.
My older 22" Cinema display (which has been demoted to my business machine) will successfully calibrate thru Pulse Color Elite, but the monitor is dim and yellow compared to a successful calibration on my new 30" & 20" Apple displays or my 20" iMac G5.
As I'm laying out a sub-portfolio book to be printed via Apple, I'm assuming the only differences in color and gamut of the finished books are going to be due only to the differences in the RGB & CMYK worlds because I'm working on a calibrated workstation. I hope I'm right.

  • Best use of Aperture for Graphic Designer

I am new to Aperture. I had been browsing my images and photos in Bridge but doing all editing in Photoshop. In Aperture I will be using Referenced instead of Managed.
I am a graphic designer, and edit, create, handle a large amount of images which is my primary usage. I also have need for comparison, as well as archival browsing of the work in one place. I am handling stock images, images I create, client jobs, etc. My jobs often involve photos sent to me by the client, and any photos I take (camera or iPhone) can be downloaded to camera app or even iPhoto, or Aperture now if one is better than the other.
I am aware that Aperture does not mirror the Finder therefore when I make any changes (either in or outside of Aperture) or add anything to the folder in Finder, Aperture is not updated. Is there any way to have this be in sync with the content on the hard drive? Or just import the corrections back into Aperture? or does it matter?
So I am wondering whether to just use Aperture for new image / photo editing and adjustments then export the corrected photos to the hard drive? Then for any future browsing of old content use Bridge?
The other thought rolling around in my head is since I already keep a well-organized folder structure outside of Aperture, I don't know the need for re-organizing / moving things around in Aperture. I think it is great that it has the flexibility for that, and perhaps I would think of a reason for doing so.
I am pondering the best use of this app for my purposes and would appreciate your experienced thoughts. Thank you!

If you decide to use Aperture to edit your images then you should consider to use Aperture as Digital Asset Management System as well. Aperture is very versatile, and any mixed setup Finder - Aperture sooner or later will lead to trouble.
You do not need to fall back on the Finder, if you want to use Photoshop or another Editor for editing in edition to Aperture. If you launch your Editor as external editor from inside Aperture, then the edits will be updated in the Aperture database, there is no extra synching necessary.

  • Coexist iphoto and aperture

I like iphone for the fact that i can easily access my photos, look at them, and create calendars, books, ect, from them very easily, and i also enjoy the interface.
i purchased aperture to be able to get more control out of editing some of my RAW files.
What is the best way to have iPhoto and Aperture coexist in the same world on my computer? Or do you think I need to just move everything from iPhoto into Aperture and just use Aperture to manage my photos as well?
I noticed that in Aperture I can't even make a calendar, it's very odd.
I wish i could keep everything in iPhoto, and when i want to edit a photo, i could send it to Aperture, edit it, and have it just update in iPhoto.
    is that possible?

I wish i could keep everything in iPhoto, and when i want to edit a photo, i could send it to Aperture, edit it, and have it just update in iPhoto.
    is that possible?
No, you cannot sync an Aperture Library with an iPhoto Library. You will have to make up your mind, which Application of the two you will want to use primarily.
I use Aperture because of its superior organizational tools and more elaborate image processing options, and when I need a calendar, I export the images from Aperture and import them to iPhoto.
But if you are happy with iPhoto, by all means stay with iPhoto. Aperture has a steep learning curve, and if iPhoto is sufficient for your needs, why give it up for something more complicated?
You can always import selected images or events from iPhoto to Aperture for processing by using the iPhoto Browser in Aperture. After processing in Aperture you can export the image again and reimport to iPhoto.

  • Dragging image selection from iphoto browser Aperture hangs

Wanting to change from IPhoto to Aperture for my Photo library and wanting to be a bit more organised i tried (as a test to begin with) dragging 50 images into a particular folder in Aperture 2.1.4 from the iphoto browser. At this time it has been working 5 hours. Activity Monitor shows a continuos but variable activity, i also see the importing indicator on Aperture indicating activity
I suppose i can force Quit but will it destroy those photos but that would leave me with the question as to why its not working
    Len

That's a good question. I just checked the camera and it does auto-rotate when I'm viewing images in the playback mode on the camera. Do you think that affects the import? I noticed that it makes two copies of all images beyond the first one imported. In other words, rotated or not, the first image I drag from iPhoto Browser will import as an Original (just one instance), yet the following ones will always be two images. I just drag from iPhoto Browser to the bottom panel of the Split View and I get two images.
    Thanks for your help,

  • Aperture and Iphoto for Building Books

I have purchased Aperture to streamline my digital processing for my new business. But I plan to produce lots of books for my clients.
Will Aperture be as easy to produce books as iphoto? It is not for quickly sending an email. I hate the thought of exporting images from Aperture to Iphoto simply to print a book.
Are there other commercial book creations services that one can use if iphoto were not my primary storage and control repository? I would love a little more flexability for my clients (leather, embossed, spine text).

    Walter:
Those in the Aperture forum would be best suited to answer that question.
There is a site, AsukaBook - Custom Coffee Table Quality Art Books that caters to professional photograhers and offers books build on custom Photoshop templates. Quality is supposed to be on a par or better of those commercial coffee-table art books.

  • New book size in Aperture?

I notice iPhoto now makes a larger format book. Does the new update for Aperture give us a new book size also?

    Fantastic 153957,
The first answer is absolutely perfect.
The second answer - is quite smart, I think, given Aperture has not allowed much control over the text. But if I've understood that right, then I have to set each space between each line as a different font size ... which could be fairly laborious if there is a lot of text. Someone once suggested just prepping all the text in Pages, then copying it into Aperture which, once I've standardized the text size etc. for a particular project, seems easier (if I've understood you right).
Thank you most kindly for your help ... I'm off to finish a book that was awaiting precisely your answer.
    Much appreciated,
    Ben

  • How can I use my external hard drive for my iphoto instead of my mac book pro memory?

i don't know if this question has been asked before: how can I use my external hard drive for my iphoto instead of my mac book pro memory? just like itunes all my song are save on my external hard drive. make sense?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
