IPhoto vs Photos in iOS 8

I am trying to regain some storage on my 16Gig iPad Mini.
I have many pictures in photos I want to delete. However, when I choose "select" and choose photos to delete, the "trash can" is greyed out. I can't figure out how to get rid of these old photos that I have backed up on my computer.
I thought, "Maybe I can delete them in iPhoto?" However, when I tried to open iPhoto, I get the message, "iPhoto is no longer supported in iOS 8. Migrate photos to 'Photos?'"
Should I "migrate" my iPhoto photos to "Photos?" Will I be able to delete them?

If you want to be able to access the photos from iPhoto, migrate. iPhoto is now obsolete and you cannot use it any longer.
But read this first:  Migrating from iPhoto for iOS to Photos on iOS 8

A common reason for being unable to delete photos from your iPhone might be, that the photos have been synced to the device using iTunes. To remove synced photos from iOS devices, simply san again with iTunes, but deselect all events and albums in iPhoto, see this link:

Thanks. Once ImageCapture had accessed the photos, THEN iPhoto began to pick up the data, so I was ultimately able to do both. It only worked with the cable, though, not the card readers. Weird.
And I really appreciate the ImageCapture tip. Any idea why it worked?

  • How to use iPhoto on Mac and iOS in conjunction

I'm using iPhoto on both my Mac, iPhone and iPad. After the new Photo Stream and the new iPhoto iOS app has been released I think it is all started to get a little confusing. Here is some of my thoughts.
    1) When I delete a photo from my Photo Stream the photo gets deleted on all my devices. Nice. On my Mac, iPhoto is for instance creating a "mar. 2012 Photo Stream" event, where all photos from the Photo Stream is keept -- also the deleted once. That's OK. On my Mac I can cleanup these events by deleting the unwanted photos. All my photos are synced to iPad but it seems, that I cannot cleanup these events on iPhoto on my iPad. Is that right? I'm able to "hide" the photos from the events, but that does not delete them -- and they are still visible on my Mac after their are synced.
    2) I have an "Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit" making me able to import photos from my camera to my iPad, which I do daily when I'm on vacation. I thought that I could just import the photos to my iPad, put them in an event/album, edit/retouch them -- and when my iPad gets near my Mac the events/albums gets synced to my iPhoto on my Mac (without having to import them to the Mac manually). But it seems that the Camera app on my iPad is just putting the imported Photos in the "Last Import" album. How is Apple thinking we should do this? I cannot find a way to move them to an Event.
    3) Generally, the difference between Albums and Events in iPhoto iOS seems unclear. After the new iPhoto for iOS was released, I was hoping that I could edit, retouch and choose the best photos from an Events and put them in an Album. I can create a Journal with these photos but that is not always what I want. For instance if I would like to make a slideshow for my TV, it would be nice to have a clean album where only the best photos from an event. How is Apple thinking this should be done?
Please tell me how you are using iPhoto on Mac and iOS. For me it does not work perfectly.

Not only do they not work perfectly, they do not work together at all. Pretty much the only thing they share is a name. They are quite independent apps. Editing history on one can not be carried over to the other, so you can't start working on shots on one device and continue on the other. Events, Albums etc have no relation with each other and so on. Perhaps the next version of iPhoto (for either OS) will move them closer together but at this time they have no relationship at all.

  • For reasons best left unsaid, in a recent rebuild of my iMac andTime Capsule, I lost all my photos. I do however currently have them on my iPad. Is it possible to retrieve all my photos from the iPad back to iPhotos (now Photos) on my iMac?

For reasons best left unsaid, in a recent rebuild of my iMac and Time Capsule, I lost all my photos. I do however have them all currently on my iPad. Is it possible to retrieve my photos from the iPad back to iPhotos (now Photos) on my iMac?

have the photos on the iPad been taken with the iPad camera or imported using the camera connection kit?
Or have they been synced to the iPad with iTunes?
You can download any photos to your mac by connecting the iPad by USB to to your Mac and import to Phots, but this way only photos from the Camera Roll will be imported.  If your photos have been synced with iTunes, you can only mail them to your mac.
See:  iOS: Syncing photos using iTunes
You can't reimport pictures synced from your computer to your device back to your computer. You can only import pictures taken by your device, or saved to it, from your device to your computer. If you need to retrieve synced photos from your device, email the photos from the device to yourself. Then download the photos from the emails to your computer.

  • RAW files in Photos with iOS 8

Has anyone found a solution to the way iOS 8 has slowed down the rendering of RAW files in Photos? This used to be one of the main ways in which I used my iPad and on photo shoots it was very impressive. Now I cannot use it to any effect. I've tried rebooting the iPad and closing apps, and while this initially improved it a bit, it is still not smooth as it was before iOS 8.

The documentation for Photos does not explain at all, how RAW files are rendered in Photos.
In iOS 7 it was documented, that RAW files were not rendered at all. iPhoto and Photos simply edited the embedded JPEG from the RAW file. And I strongly suspect, that that is still what happens. Have you changed the settings in your camera to a different RAW compression and are now using a different RAW format than previously?

  • Photos in iOS show location, not title

After syncing my iPod Touch (iOS 8.3) with my MacBook (Yosemite 10.10.3), all the photos on my iPod Touch now show the location and date taken, but not the title - even though the photos do have titles in Photos 1.0 on my MacBook.   Is there some way to get my iOS Photos to display titles?

I want the title to appear - the same title that has been applied to Photos OS X on my MacBook.
Photos in iOS cannot display titles. That's why it only displays the location and the date.   I linked to the Migrating from iPhoto for iOS to Photos on iOS 8 - Apple Support document, because it lists what Photos iOS cannot display. And titles and captions are one of the items. You cannot add titles or captions in Photos on iOS,  and so they are not displayed.

  • Why can't I make some photos in iOS 8 a favorite?

I recently migrated from an iPhone 5s to a 6, and thus to iOS 8.
I really miss my iPhone camera roll, which contained an odd collection of pics important to me.
Although I can find them scattered through Photos in iOS 8, some of them do not have the "heart" option to add the photo to Favorites. Why?
I've been trying to recreate my old camera roll in Favorites.

sinc eyou give us abasoutely no inforamation except that you have a problem it is impossibel to tell you
What version of iphoto do you have? The general answer to deleting photos in iphoto is to select a photo in an event, press teh delete key and empty the iPhoto trash and teh System trash
However deleting photo is probably not going to resolve a disk space issue - how much free disk space do you have?  Ususlly deleting a few (or even a lot of) photos is not enough to help
you probablly need to get an externaldrive and move your photos and music to it
    to move our photos
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

Help! I used to upload photos via ios and it was always published up to my 5th photos, but on the 6th, it just go to ios photos album and was not published on my fb's timeline...

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • IPhoto duplicating photos upon connecting iPhone

    Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.1
    iPhoto 9.6
    iPhone 4S iOS 8.1.2
Upon connecting my iPhone to my MacBook to import photos, iPhoto displays duplicates of every photo.
This problem manifests itself regularly (though not every time) and began after upgrading to OS X Yosemite.
Any thoughts on cause / solution?

    See this discussion:
iPhoto duplicating photos upon connecting iPhone
Are you shooting HDR or Burst photos?
If not, It seems to be a new bug, with no known clear solution.
The latest theory is, that dismounting the iPhone and mounting again will make the duplicates vanish from the import window.

  • Uploading photos from iPhoto to Photo Stream

Hi, I'm trying to upload photos from iPhoto '11 (9.4.2) on my iMac onto Photo Stream. It's a set of 43 imported directly into iPhoto from a USB stick, so not taken on any iOS device connected to the same iCloud account.
Photo Stream is enabled in iPhoto and is working fine with the preferences I've selected - I'm not using automatic upload for all new photos.
I've selected and dragged the photos from their Event in iPhoto onto Photo Stream in the sidebar under RECENT. This behaves as I would expect and when I select Photo Stream and look at the contents it says Uploading 43 photos to the right of the title at the top of the Photo Stream window. However it said that 15hrs ago and they're still not there!
The only thing I can think of is whether the date the photos were taken (19-Feb-13) is relevant - they were updloaded on the 12-Apr-13.
Any help would be appreciated, I couldn't find anything out there that alreadyprovided a solution.

If you have your iPhoto/Photo Stream setup as shown in this screenshot
you can delete the photos from the Photo Stream and they will be safe in your iPhoto LIbrary.
But I would check each monthly Photo Stream Event in the library to confirm that they are safely in the Event before deleting from the Photo Stream.

  • Transfer an album from MacBook pro to iphoto app on my iOS 7

Ok, I have the iPhoto app on my iOS 7 devices and iPhoto on my MacBook but how do I get an album from the Mac to the phone/ipad? When I tried to sync last night it put the albums in my photos and I don't want them there, I want them in my iPhoto app.

? When I tried to sync last night it put the albums in my photos and I don't want them there, I want them in my iPhoto app.
The iPhoto.app on IOS does not store photos on its own. It organizes photos and gives different views for photos that have been imported and are already on the iPhone or iPad. So to see photos iPhoto IOS you have to import them to your Camera Roll, have them in the Photo Stream, or in events, when importing using the camera connection kit.
When iPhoto is creating its own albums, it will not duplicate the photos, only reference them in in the Camera Roll or events.  This is the main reason, that you cannot delete photos in iPhoto, because the photos have not been imported by iPhoto, but by the Photos.app and are stored there or have been synced from your mac and can only be deleted by syncing again.

I am making a calendar in iPhoto, picking photos from a folder, let's call it "2011 Pics," in iPhoto. After arranging all the photos and captions I decided I wanted to insert a new photo -- one that was not in "2011 Pics." So I inserted it into the folder, but the picture does not show up on the scrolling menu of pictures at the left of the calendar-making page. This happened last year and in frustration I started all over again. But surely there is a way to add a new picture to a calendar that is already laid out.

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?
