Iphoto will not open my old photos

I updated my IPhoto like my Macbook Pro asked me to. I had previously saved my photos to an external hard drive because they were so large that I did not have any room on my computer any longer. With that being said, when I plug in my external hard drive to open my photos it states that they need to be converted, but when I tried to do that, it started deleting them off of my hard drive into my trash can then errored out. I transferred the pictures back onto my hard drive, but of course without going through every photo (which there were a lot) I was not sure which event to put them in, so I just put them in one folder. What do I need to do to be able to view my old photos on the new version of IPhoto? When I plug my hard drive into my boyfriend's computer I am able to view all of the photos, but not in the events, as he has a PC. Please help!!

what format is the external hard drive? - What version of iphoto do you have? What version did you have? What version of the OS do you have? What other changes have have you recently made?
This is far less than clear -
but when I tried to do that, it started deleting them off of my hard drive into my trash can then errored out. I transferred the pictures back onto my hard drive,
What started deleting? What was "it" deleting? What was the exact error? Exactly how did you transfer the picture back to your hard drive? Which hard drive (the internal one or external one)?

After a power failure while iPhoto was running, I get the message "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable"  and iPhoto will not open???? held down the option and the command and tried to run what was ticked off and it just sits there with a spinning wheel and does nothing, can I throw the app away and download a new one? or will it still not open?

, can I throw the app away and download a new one? or will it still not open?
You could, but the error message is indicating that your iPhoto library needs repairing.
Check, if iPhoto will run, if you launch it on a new library. Hold down the alt/option key, while you launch iPhoto. Select to create a new library from the panel that will show. Can you create a new library? If yes, try again to fix the library. Which options have you tried from the Library First Aid panel, when you launched iPhoto with the option and command key held down?
If you have not tried "Rebuild"; do that next. But be sure to make a backup of your iPhoto library, before you try this.

iPhoto will not open with pictures when I click on the icon.  It does show that it is open on top toolbar. What happened to my photos?

Did you run any updaters recently, i.e. like just before this happened?  Try this first fix: make a duplicate copy of the library and try the following:
1 - delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file,, Cache.dbt, that is located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences..

  • I just installed elements 11 with camera raw 7.1. My  photos from iPhoto will not open in camera raw

I just installed elements 11 with camera raw 7.1 in my iMac. My raw photo files from iPhoto will not open in camera raw. The elements screen opens without a photo, but camera raw willnot open. Help.

You need to tell iphoto to send raw files out of iphoto or it will make its own conversion and send a pre-converted file. Go to the iphoto preferences>advanced and turn on this checkbox:

  • IPhoto will not open my library after I restored from Time Machine

I was successfully able to restore most if not all of my data from Time Machine after I had to get a new hard drive on my iMac. But iPhoto will not open my photo library. A window pops up that says I modified some of my photos using a newer version of iPhoto, so I must open that version. But I do not have a newer version than iPhoto 7.1.5.
I have iPhoto 8.2 on my laptop, but how could I have modified any of the same photos on that? The iMac library is not on the laptop.
I would appreciate any input on how to recover my photo library.

You can get this message if the database file is corrupted.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • HT2638 iPhoto will not open

My IPhoto will not open. Just get the spinning circle. I have to force it to close. When I look at my IPhone library it says it is --KB in size. Did I lose my entire library? Can it be rebuilt? Not sure what version I am using but bought Mac in '09 and no upgrades.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto will not open at all

This is a strange one!  iPhoto will not open - I get the message that it is not the right version or something - see attached.  (StartUp drive is SCS Mac 500HD)
OK so I take my 36 hour old full SuperSuper! Backup and make that the startup drive - D1-LaCie 505gb MBP BkUp2.  I use iPhoto (from the backup or the "main" drive) and both work fine-- all libraries from both HD's as well as other internal and external drives work (yes, I have a second internal HD on my MBP-13" - removed the DVD drive).
So I am guessing this has to do with something corrupt in the iPhoto plist on my main drive or ???? something.  The HD's all have been verified and are perfect; and disk permissions have been repaired.
Any comments on what to "trash" / "rebuild" or ??? --- again, all works perfectly when I startup from my BackUp FireWire external HD.  All iPhoto libraries open just fine.
THANKS!  I'll keep experimenting but haven't found a solution yet.
    Best regards,

  • IPhoto will not open since upgrading to OSX 10.8

Hi, has anyone come across this since upgrading to Mountain Lion. iPhoto will not open and I get the below error message. I was previously on OSX 10.6 with all updates applied to the OS. I upgrade the iPhoto app under iLife 11 on OSX 10.6 and it worked fine. Since I upgrade to the new Mountain Lion OS, iPhoto will not open. I tried to rebuild the library using the command and option (alt) key but it will not give me the option to rebuild. Should I attempt to delete the application and reinstall?  Any assistance would be gratefully received. Many thanks.

I tried that Terence but keep getting the same message. Firstly, after reinstalling iPhoto, it requires me to upgrade via the App store, and then I get the below message. The odd thing is that my iphoto version is 9.2 whilst the upgrade from the App store refers to version 9.1. The version line item per the below message appears to have changed from the initial message in my first posting here.

  • IPhoto will not open. Error message says I must upgrade. But APP store says it is already installed?

iPhoto will not open. Error message says I must upgrade but the AppStore indicates that the newest version of iPhoto is installed so how can I upgrade and why did it stop working in the first place? What is the problem?

Hi Terence. I solved my problem. Apparently a 9.5.1 version of iPhoto was dowloaded, backed up on Ext Drive then deleted from the Mac HD...Leaving the old version 9.4.3 still resident on the Mac HD.
    Thanks for responding.

  • My iphoto will not open correctly.  All I get is the little wheel going around and around.  What do I need to do to open my iphoto?

My iphoto will not open correctly.  All I get is the little wheel going around and around.  What do I need to do to fix this?  I would like to be able to see my photos again.

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Iphoto will not open, only a spinning wheel,  how do i find problem??

i have no idea how this happened but my iphoto will not open no matter what. if i try & open iphoto i only get a spinning wheel & it never opens, if i try & open a picture using iphoto same result !! my picture library seems to have vanished as well, if this sounds familiar please advise....

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

  • IPhoto will not open, saying that the app is being updated - but it is not being updated. Help please!

    Hello all
My iPhoto will not open.  I get a system popup saying "iPhoto is being updated.  iPhoto cannot be opened while it is being updated".
I have checked and it is not being updated and I have restarted the Mac.
    Suggestions will be gratefully received!
    Many thanks!

    Try delete it and reinstall.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • Iphoto will not open. how can i fix it?

iphoto will not open when i click on it. my photos are still on my computer but i cant see them in iphoto. i tried to repair disk permissions but nothing happened. i really don't want to loose my pics. what should i do?

What happens when you click on iPhoto? Does it bounce in the Dock?  Do nothing at all?  What version of iPhoto are you running?
Assuming you're running iPhoto 11 make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
      Fix #1
delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
    Select options #1, #2 and #6.
    Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
