IPhoto won't display my portrait photos. Help please!

I haven't had this problem until recently.
I import photos into iPhoto from my Nikon D90 via SD Card slot in my macbookpro and I have been having this problem.
All the portrait photos that are imported display a blank black image on the overview and even when i open the file. However, when i click "edit" in iphoto, it then appears. By editing it or just making some kind of change and reverting to original, the file is then corrected and displays correctly. Or else it just remains black and I can't upload them to facebook, flickr etc.
Please help me with this problem

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
If none of these help:
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Iphoto won't display events or photos

I am not able to access my photos or events in iPhoto - I had connected my iphone 5 and it successfully downloaded some photos from the iphone. THen, I closed Iphoto and a bit later relaunched it to look for some other photos. It  doesn't not show any photos - or events - . I did import one photo - and it created an event but, it will not leave that screen. I cannot figure out how to return this page to the home page - or events page ( I'm not sure what it's called).
I was able to slow peruse things in "search backups" and found that the photos are still there but, this is very cumbersome and I need to find some photos relatively quickly. Please advise. Thanks, Thomas - i"m using 10.7.5

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library - start at the first option and try each one in order

  • Iphoto won't display photos or run a slideshow. Thumbnails all OK etc. Tried rebuilding library and reset Mac Air but no result.  Ideas please!!!!

Iphoto won't display photos or run a slideshow - just a black screen. Can't see photos to edit etc. Thumbnails all OK and all else seems visible in the usual way etc. Tried rebuilding library and reset Mac Air but no result.  Ideas please!!!!

and was told to go home and rebuild the photo library (there are 2257 photos). Did this but problem is still there.
When you rebuild the library did you rebuild the database?  Also did you repair the library's permissions? Is this the First Aid window that you got?
Those are the two options to use.
Here's another fix you can try:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
You'll have to recreate your slideshow after using this method.

Will I lose my photos in iPhoto if upgrade to a latest version? I have upgraded my system to Mavericks and now my iPhoto doesn't work. Can anyone help, please?

    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

I created a photo album on my iPhone 4s - edited photos etc. but I cannot figure out how to transfer it to my pc (using Windows 8).  The only folder in the iphone drive is the one which has the Camera roll photos Help please - I really need the photos!

The camera roll is not part of the sync process at all.
You should be importing these photos to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera.  Youc an organize them on your computer and sync the to the iphone if you wish.
The photos sync from the computer to the iphone is one way.
The iphone mirrors the selected content of the computer to which it is synced.

-You stated: " It is on, but I cannot use it "
Does this mean that the iPod works fine but when you connect the iPod to your computer iTunes does not see - your iPod?
    - Have you tried:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X
    - If you really have OSX 10.6.x (not 10.5.8 as stated) try:
Mac OS X v10.6 or later: iOS device not recognized in iTunes after restart
    - Have you tried another cable and USB port?
    - If the iPod is not working then there are other things to try.

  • Iphoto won't display photo library

I recently upgraded to iPhoto 9.3.2 and to Mountain Lion on my iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
I'm not 100% sure when this problem occured, but now, when I open iPhoto, it won't display any photos. All it shows is a note saying "To get started with iPhoto...etc"
I've tried the following so far:
    - repair permissions
    - disk repair
    - holding down option command when opening iPhoto and choosing repair database and rebuild database (nothing happened on either occasion)
    - tried launching earlier versions of iPhoto from my Time Machine back-up: 9.3.1; 9.3; 9.2.3. Got the same problem with each
    - tried to import photos. Tried several different ones but always, iPhoto would hang on 'finishing import'
    - tried rebuild library in iPhoto Library Manager but I get an error: An error occurred trying to open the database at /Users/MichaelSasha/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Database/apdb/Library.apdb (14)
I also have a Mac Mini and have successfully upgraded to iPhoto 9.3.2 & Mountain Lion and have no problems with photos. I accessed the Mac Mini from the iMac and copied across a photo and tried to import it on the iMac but got the 'finishing import' hanging issue
This is really puzzling me! I've exhausted all the options I can think of. Hoping someone out there has any suggestions.

Did you try restoring an earlier version of you iPhoto Library and see if it would open with iPhoto? If you have with no success then try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If you can create and run a new library then the problem lies with your current library.  And, since you've tried all of the repair fixes the only option left is:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Iphoto won't display photos

    Hi all,
I'm having problems with iPhoto that I can't seem to rectify.  iPhoto loads normally, imports any new photos and displays them correctly as thumbnails.
My problem is, when I click on a thumbnail I'm taken to the new screen where my enlarged, editable selected photo should be but -- all I get is black screen.
    Very strange...
My photos work just fine with Picasa but I would much rather use iPhoto.
    Thanks!

    Just a blank black screen?
There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.

(On iPhoto 11 this option is under the File -> Reveal in Finder.) Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.

  • Photos saved from Mail to iPhoto won't display

I recently converted my niece from a PC to an new 14 inch iBook. She has 10.4.2 and all the latest software updates. When she clicks on the "Save" button in Mail her photos do not appear in iPhoto. After proving to myself this was really happening, I found the missing photos. They are being saved at the root level in the iPhoto folder-not in the respective photo folders. I suspect that this is the problem but I don't know why or how to fix it. I tried saving photos from Mail on a couple of other Macs at my house and the feature seems to work fine.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Hi Joseph, the feature works fine for me too.
the only info I could find was this.
"Add to iPhoto" button in Mail and keyword search in spotlight don't work
If she does have the latest iPhoto, then all I can suggest is to use Disk Utility to repair permissions. If that doesn't work, then just have her drag the images in the email to the desktop, then import them into iPhoto from there.

  • IPhoto won't import my iPhone photo library.  Help!

I just bought a new Macbook Pro, and am having difficulty importing photos from my iphone4.  When I open iPhoto, it allows me to import photos from my camera roll, but it will not allow me to import photos from my iphone albums or iphone photo library.  It doesn't even acknowledge that my iphone has any photos on it other than those in my camera roll.  Is there any way to import those?

@sig Your reply misunderstands the issue. While it is straightforward to sync photo albums FROM iPhoto to the iPhone, there is no apparent way to import photo ALBUMS CREATED on the iPhone into iPhoto. I'm having the same issue and seeking an answer, which I'll republish here when I find it.

  • IPhoto won't display thumbnails

I performed a clean install of OS X, and when I copied over the pictures I had backed up iPhoto wouldn't display thumbnails. Old photos have no thumbnails at all, new photos will show thumbnails if I scroll around quickly, but return to blanks if I stop. If I edit a picture, the thumbnail will show until I quit iPhoto. I've tried rebuilding the library and thumbnails.
    I have have a MacBook Pro from late 2009, iPhoto '09 version 8.1.2 (424).

How did you bring back the pictures after the clean install?  Did you use Migration Assistant in the restoring of your files?  If so know that MA has a history of not handling iPhoto library very well.  So if you did use MA see if you can do a manual copy of the backup library to the Pictures folder on your Mac.  Then launch iPhoto and go from there.
If you didn't use MA then try the following: make a temporary, duplicate copy of your library and apply the three fixes in order as necessary.
    Fix #1
1 - delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file,, Cache.dbt, that is located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
If that doesn't help try the following: make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • IPhoto won't recognize all ANY photos in folder

HELP! I consider myself fairly Mac savy, and yet I'm at a total loss on this one!
I have my iPhoto Library folder on an external drive. Somehow , there was a corrutpion and now iPhoto says/shows I have NO PHOTOS in my library. All my photos/files (over 8,000 of them) and in the iPhoto Library folder unharmed. I just CAN'T get iPhoto to recognize them.
    Here's what I've tried so far --
HOLDING DOWN OPTION KEY WHILE LAUNCHING to reselect folder.
HOLDING DOWN OPTION AND APPLE KEY TO REBUILD EVERYTHING
    DUMPING THE PREF. FILE
I'm hoping against hope that I won't have to reimport ALL my files! Say it isn't so!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    HI robert,
I'm not going to say anything! :^(
but if need be (and I think there is) here are the instructions for creating a new library.
How many images do you have in your library?
Do you mind losing albums, keywords, comments?
    If not...
    close iPhoto
-rename your old library to iPhoto Library_old
-launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed until you get a message screen and choose to create a new library
    -name the new library
-once the new library is open...
-double click the old iPhoto Library folder on the external to open it
-the two main folders you will need to import are the Original folder and the Modified folder (only if you want to import the edited images).
-the Originals folder has all your originals photos unedited. the Modified folder has all images that you have edited, rotated, cropped, etc.
-Drag these two folders to the desktop
-If you want to save the edited image, find it in the roll in the Modified folder and drag it into the roll of the same name in the Originals folder. It will replace the originals and now will be the original.
-If you don't care to save any edited images, then don't import the Modified folder into iPhoto or don't bother replacing the edited image with the original image like I just described.
-If you import the Originals folder into iPhoto you will have all your originals in their named rolls.
-If you import the Originals and Modified folders into iPhoto, you will have all of the being in the originals folder in the finder. The roll with the same name as the other will have a _1 appended to it's name (in the finder)
-the roll from the originals will be next to the same roll from the Modified folder within iPhoto. You can then delete any of the images from there if you want.
I know this might sound confusing but it really isn't.
Get back if any of this sounds like something you might want to do.
