Iphoto won't import from iPhone at all

I can't figure it out.  At first it said there was a file which wouldn't allow it to continue.  I do have iCloud photos turned on but I want to back up all photos onto my hard drive so I have them securely elsewhere too.  Suggestions?  Usually I back up my iPhoto Library to external hard drive but now I can't.  iPhone 6+, latest iPhoto on a new iMac, latest updates installed everywhere.  Should I back up elsewhere?

Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

    please help

I am experiencing exactly the same problem, my iPhoto used to detect my iPhone and proceed to the automatic transfer of new photos, and now it doesn't anymore.
I've done quite a bit of research on this issue, but I can't seem to have any luck in fixing it...
Here's some fixes that I found on other sites that you could try:
    1. Reset the iPhone and your Mac.
    2. Check (from memory) if you have any pictures in your camera roll that weren't taken with your iPhone camera (this includes screenshots, photos downloaded from the web, email, etc.), this may be the cause of the problem and it's what makes iPhoto not recognize the phone as a camera anymore.
As for my problem, I've tried everything: resetting the phone, resetting my MacBook Pro, first deleting all photos that might be causing the problem, now I've deleted ALL my photos, and my Mac still won't detect my iPhone as a camera.
iTunes can see it just fine, and I can sync with it perfectly, but I can't sync it with iPhoto for the life of me...
If anyone could help, that would be perfect...

  • IPhoto won't import my iPhone pictures.

I updated my iPhone to the new iOS 7.0.3 software and now iPhoto '09 won't import my photos from my iPhone.  It keeps saying The file is in an unrecognized format.  How do I fix this?

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

  • IPhoto does not import from iPhone

I can not import my iPhone pics anymore. Even when the phone is not attached to the iMAC iPhoto shows "Arthur's iPhone" on the left of the screen. On the right side I see 213 empty pictures although I have deleted everything from my iPhone. With empty I mean thesquare of the picture is there but no image in it.
On my wife's powerbook no problems with the same iPhone.
Can i reset iPhoto or re-install it ?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto won't import from Sony memory stick reader...

I have successfully imported from Lexar firewire cf reader, but when I plugged in my USB memory stick reader - iphoto doesn't respond. I do see "MSAC-US1" in the hardware overview of system profiler - which is the reader. When i put in a full memory stick, the reader lights as if it is talking with the computer - but the stick doesn't mount on the desktop, iphoto ignores it completely, as does disk utility.
I just upgraded to the latest version of iphoto and am using a new intel iMac.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Eric
intel iMac, ibook   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   iphoto 6.02

I have the same problem. MSAC-US1, always worked before with iPhoto; I upgraded to a MacBook Pro, and now it doesn't work. The Access light momentarily lights up on the MSAC-US1, but the stick doesn't mount on the desktop. The device does show up in System Profiler, just as you noted.
It looks like the Intel version of the OS doesn't have support for this device - which is a huge problem, especially since it is listed as a device on the iPhoto Supported Devices page.
Apple, are you monitoring this discussion? Time to fix this bug!

  • IPhoto won't import from Kodak EasyShare C300

How do I find out if my new Kodak EasyShare C300 is compatible with iPhoto? If so, how do I get the program to recognize the pictures? In the left margin, the program lists the camera, so it seems to recognize it. When there are pictures on the camera and iPhoto 5 opens, the message says nothing to import. Help! I can use the Kodak software, but I'd prefer iPhoto.
    Al

Since I don't want all my photos in iPhoto, I use Apple's Image Capture to do an initial screen on the images before uploading to the computer. If you want to try it as a workaround for your problem, open it in the Applications folder and set your Preferences to always open when a camera is attached (also opens when you put the card/card reader into a USB slot).
You can import/duplicate the photos in iPhoto if you want a backup, or you can "import" a link to the originals in their original folder.

  • IPhoto Won't Import my iPhone Photos!

I have searched and ready the other threads with the same name, as listed below. Those threads are closed and archived, even though they did not create a solution for me. Please help. This is a frustrating problem that I can't seem to fix.
I'm using iPhoto '09. This may or may not be the issue as far as compatibility with the iPhone.
I had the issue before and still could not find a solution. Then once an update came out it fixed the problem. I currently have over 100 photos on my phone and don't want to lose any of them. I have tried deleting some but it doesn't change anything.
I've tried the suggestions in these threads to no avail:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7246540
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7860077

I had a similar problem with importing impages from my USB SD card reader. I tried importing images using my iMac, Macbook Pro, and a new Macbook Pro unibody and got the same error, "iPhoto cannot import your photos because there was a problem downloading an image." I finally realized that the problem was either the memory card or the card reader itself. I switched to an older usb card reader and had no issues after that.
I am not sure if this is the same problem that you are facing with your iphone but if you cannot import images using a fresh iphoto db and or os test account, then I would seriously look into the possibility that the iphone itself could be the source of your issues.

  • IPhoto won't import my iPhone photo library.  Help!

I just bought a new Macbook Pro, and am having difficulty importing photos from my iphone4.  When I open iPhoto, it allows me to import photos from my camera roll, but it will not allow me to import photos from my iphone albums or iphone photo library.  It doesn't even acknowledge that my iphone has any photos on it other than those in my camera roll.  Is there any way to import those?

@sig Your reply misunderstands the issue. While it is straightforward to sync photo albums FROM iPhoto to the iPhone, there is no apparent way to import photo ALBUMS CREATED on the iPhone into iPhoto. I'm having the same issue and seeking an answer, which I'll republish here when I find it.

  • IPhoto won't import my iPhone 4 photos

Hi everyone! I've been looking around, and none of the other related discussions have helped so far.
I'm using a lovely new MacBook Pro retina, and I have an iPhone 4.
When I connect my iPhone to the mac, it will only import my Camera Roll and not all the other photos I have in the photo app, such as Photo Library, Last 12 Months etc.
So I have 400 pictures that are being imported, and atleast 900 which aren't.
    Any ideas?

That is how it works - your camera roll photos are imorted
    Additional Information
You can import only photo and video content taken with the built-in camera or captured on the device. You cannot import photo or video content synced from iTunes.

  • Iphoto crashes on import from iPhone 4s

Seen a thread or two on this but still can't find a solution.  I've tried all the rebuilding etc and even a new library, still iphoto crashes when I try to iimport photos from my iphone 4s.  I am on a brand new 27" imac with Lion.

I think I got it figured out, thanks!  I just deleted the quicktime folder in the application support and so far so good.

  • Can't email videos from iPhoto that was imported from iPhone 4

After importing videos taken with my iPhone 4 into iPhoto, I can't email them with my yahoo email account. Says it exceeds 25MB and will not allow that. I had no problems with my 3Gs emailing long videos. Any ideas?

IMHO the best solutiopn is to use Apple mail as hyour e-mail client - set it in the iPhoto preferences

  • Contacts won't import from iPhone

I recently had to wipoe out my MacBook Pro hard drive and remigrate everything I had backed up onto an external drive. Unfortunately, my contacts somehow missed the cut so my address book on my laptop is empty, but luckily, all of my contacts are still on my phone. I've tried to have MobileMe populate my mac address book but nothing comes across. I've done advanced sync etc. but nothing comes over. I've also looked at the files on my hard drive and it appears the contacts are there too, and I've replaced the folder in my Library/Application Support with the old files, but Address book still comes up empty. COuld this be a permissions problem? When I renamed my mac after I formatted the drive I think I used my full name instead of my nickname - could that be the problem?

No, well of course it will not work, because no iPhone ever stores any data on a sim card - you need to get the contacts onto your computer and then sync with your iPhone that way and then search the app store for an app to help you do this, because it is not possible to transfer straight from a sim card directly in this way.

  • IPhoto won't import from mail

For some reason, I can't seem to import pictures from mial into iPhoto. Running the latest software.

This is a bug in Mt. Lion, see:
Mountain Lion: May be unable to save from Mail directly to iPhoto
As a work-around: Ctrl-click the photo attachments and send them to iPhoto with "Open with > other > iPhoto" instead of "Export to iPhoto" or drag them to the iPhoto icon in the Dock or to the Desktop.
    Send feedback to Apple.

  • IPhoto won't import .mov files from iPhone

I'm trying to import the photos and videos from my iPhone and the following screen shows up:
I've only had this trouble since updating to Yosemite. Any help is appreciated.
    MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2010)
    8GB Memory
    2.53 GHz Intel Core i5

There are many, many posts of this nature in these forums.  See, for example:
    iphoto won’t import mov video
For many, rebuilding the XPC helper cache solves the problem off the bat. In terminal try this, and reboot:
    sudo /usr/libexec/xpchelper --rebuild-cache
The above posted by Andy Ball on a thread related to a similar problem with Aperture:
Re: Import video to Aperture library on Mountain Lion
    Other things to try:
    1. create a fresh iPhoto library and try that.  (hold down opt while launching iPhoto)
    2. create a new OS X user (in system preferences) and try there.
In my case – and many cases – neither of those things work either, which means the problem is system wide.  Again suggesting that the xpc helper solution might work. But for me it did not either.
There are other suggestions that there are conflicts with Perian (on Yosemite) and flip4mac.  In my case uninstalling both of those didn't solve it either.
So maybe one of those solutions will work for you, results apparently vary.  But this is a huge unresolved issue many others are having as well.  I have a case with a senior apple advisor open, still unresolved. His suggestion of course, at this point, is an archive and re-install. I'm not ready to go there yet.
BTW, another thing he had me try was to import the file with Image Capture (which works).  Then open it in QuickTime Player X.  Then try exporting to 480p.  Does QuickTime crash?  It does for me.
    My summary:
    1. Files successfully import with Image Player.
    2. Files play with QuickTime Player X.
    3. QuickTime Player X crashes when exporting to 480p.
    4. Files import with iMove.
    5. Files fail to import with iPhoto (unrecognized format as with OP)
    6. iPhoto import failure/errors are system wide and not specific to a library or a user.
    7. rebuilding xpchelper cache and rebooting in my case does not resolve issue.
    8. same videos import fine in iPhoto on a totally different system (laptop running same versions of OS X 10.10 and iPhoto 9.5.1)

  • IPhoto won't import .mov video from iPhone

I just got my wife a new Mac mini.  It is running the latest versions of Mountain Lion and iPhoto.
She's recorded some short videos of the kids with her iPhone (4s), and wants to organize these in iPhoto alongside pictures of the kids (she's done this before).
However, since getting her new computer, when she tried to import the videos, she got an error message that said the files were an unrecognized format.
We were able to retrieve the videos and copy them to her hard drive using Image Capture; however, she would still like to import them to iPhoto.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.
