Iphoto won't import mov video

Iphoto 9.5.1 (mac mini, mavericks) suddenly stopped playing some mov videos. With iphoto library manager I found out that unplayable mov files are indicated in iphoto as pictures. When I press «reveal in finder» I still can play all the mov files via quicktime. But when I try to delete and re-import them into iphoto library I  always get the message «The following files could not be imported. The file is an unrecognised format». I deleted perian, quicktime 7, fip4mac, I did rebuild and repair of the library. Nothing helps (sorry for my English).

I think I have the EXACT same problem. (Everything also up to date)
I can't view movies that were viewable just days ago. (So, I am guessing this happened for me with the most recent OS update a day or so ago.)
Some videos from my (non iPhone) cameras will play. But LOTS don't. Some have audio and no video. iPhone movies won't play at all.
I can't import videos from my iPhone 5  into a library -- not even a brand new library. It gives me the same message that it is an unrecognized format. In fact, I can't import .mov files from two new Canon cameras that I imported from just days ago! I get the same error message.
This happens with some variation in both Aperture and iPhoto. Actually, iPhoto shows many of my videos (except iPhone vids), unlike Aperture which lets me view very few.
I have repaired and rebuilt the library/database. As I said, I have created a new library. No change - same problem occurs.
iPhoto won't even let me export video.
But, if I view the original movie file in finder, everything works fine, no problems - I can Quick Look it, open it in Quicktime, etc. etc.
** This is THE ERROR MESSAGE that I am getting TONS of in the console whenever I try to do just about anything with movies: **
Any help greatly appreciated.

  • IPhoto won't import .mov video from iPhone

I just got my wife a new Mac mini.  It is running the latest versions of Mountain Lion and iPhoto.
She's recorded some short videos of the kids with her iPhone (4s), and wants to organize these in iPhoto alongside pictures of the kids (she's done this before).
However, since getting her new computer, when she tried to import the videos, she got an error message that said the files were an unrecognized format.
We were able to retrieve the videos and copy them to her hard drive using Image Capture; however, she would still like to import them to iPhoto.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

There are many, many posts of this nature in these forums.  See, for example:
    iphoto won’t import mov video
For many, rebuilding the XPC helper cache solves the problem off the bat. In terminal try this, and reboot:
    sudo /usr/libexec/xpchelper --rebuild-cache
The above posted by Andy Ball on a thread related to a similar problem with Aperture:
Re: Import video to Aperture library on Mountain Lion
    Other things to try:
    1. create a fresh iPhoto library and try that.  (hold down opt while launching iPhoto)
    2. create a new OS X user (in system preferences) and try there.
In my case – and many cases – neither of those things work either, which means the problem is system wide.  Again suggesting that the xpc helper solution might work. But for me it did not either.
There are other suggestions that there are conflicts with Perian (on Yosemite) and flip4mac.  In my case uninstalling both of those didn't solve it either.
So maybe one of those solutions will work for you, results apparently vary.  But this is a huge unresolved issue many others are having as well.  I have a case with a senior apple advisor open, still unresolved. His suggestion of course, at this point, is an archive and re-install. I'm not ready to go there yet.
BTW, another thing he had me try was to import the file with Image Capture (which works).  Then open it in QuickTime Player X.  Then try exporting to 480p.  Does QuickTime crash?  It does for me.
    My summary:
    1. Files successfully import with Image Player.
    2. Files play with QuickTime Player X.
    3. QuickTime Player X crashes when exporting to 480p.
    4. Files import with iMove.
    5. Files fail to import with iPhoto (unrecognized format as with OP)
    6. iPhoto import failure/errors are system wide and not specific to a library or a user.
    7. rebuilding xpchelper cache and rebooting in my case does not resolve issue.
    8. same videos import fine in iPhoto on a totally different system (laptop running same versions of OS X 10.10 and iPhoto 9.5.1)

  • IPhoto won't import movies (.mov, .mp4) into the library since last upgrade to 9.5.1 (902.17)

iPhoto won't import movies (.mov, .mp4) into the library since last upgrade to 9.5.1 (902.17). Error message is "File format not recognized". Before that, no problem. Had them first on SD-card over USB, tried then to copy to the HD (Desktop) and import from there, but didn't work. Imported successfully into iMovie and exported as .mp4, but even this is not recognized.

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

  • ITunes 11 won't import .mov video files from external hard drive but will from internal.

    Hi Everyone
I'm having a problem with iTunes 11.0.1. I can't import .mov video files stored on an external hard drive. I can however import .m4v files from the same external drive. Using either the add to library option or dragging files from the finder.
I can add .mov files from the internal though. Strange I know.
The reason behind this posting is that I'm using iFlicks to convert my TV and movies from my external drive for Apple TV and add all relevent meta data, keeping the files on the external drive and having iTunes link to them.
I would like to be able to simply create a general iTune compatiable file using iFlicks which only takes a minute or two per file to convert. I'm currently converting them to .m4v just for the sack of being able to import them into iTunes from an external drive takes 45 minutes per file.
Has anybody else had this problem? Any ideas on a fix to allow me to import .mov files from an external drive into iTunes without copying it to the iTune library file.
    Many Thanks
    Dave

This might be worth a shot - basically seeing if Vista permissions could be the culprit.
Give yourself FULL control and ownership of the exHD, let's call it M:
How to Take Ownership and Grant Permissions in Windows Vista
Take control of the top level folder and ALL subfolders.
Try creating a new blank ITL file on M: by pressing *and holding* the shift key while itunes starts. See if you can add everything again.

  • IPhoto won't import my videos. Help!

I'm trying to import videos from my camera (Canon Rebel T3) into iPhoto. I've done this several times before, and it's always worked fine. Today, I'm trying to import a video but it keeps telling me that there is a problem downloading the image. I've also tried using Image Capture, but it will not import there either.
What can I do? I need this video imported, edited, and online before Monday!

As both iPhoto and Image Capture can't get the video, any chance that the file is faulty?
Can you access it via a USB Card Reader?

  • Iphoto won't import iphone video

This should "just work" and it "just doesn't."  I am trying to import a movie I made on my iPhone 4 to the latest iPhoto.  I can see the video which I shot, but when I click on "import all" it just hangs with a beach ball.  I have to force quit iPhoto.

Thanks for the tip.   Using image capture does import and allow me to delete photos.  However, also I'd like to know why iPhoto keeps having this problem.  It's not just a one-time occurence.  I also had this problem with a movie FOR the iPad that I made with QuickTime 7 Pro.  iPhoto seems to have a bug in this respect, or my configuration is hosed somehow.

  • IPhoto won't import movies...

    Hi,
I just recently bought this iMac 2.5 GHz.
I'm trying to import videos from my SD400 camera. It doesn't work. Neither using the USB2 cable that came with the camera, neither using MacAlly USB2 / Media card reader. iPhoto hangs.
It used to work with iPhoto's previous version with my PowerBook G4.
    Thanks for your help.

The problem is that Quicktime doesn't support the codec that your camera uses.
Go back to the manufacturer's site and see if there have an updated codec for QT
    Install Perian

Premiere CS6 won't import mov files, the message: "file has no video or audio streams" shows up instead. How can I import the files?

MOV is a wrapper that can contain many different codecs. The message you get is indicative of a distribution codec inside the MOV wrapper. You may need to convert the material to an editable codec before importing.

iPhoto won't import video from a Samsung HZ15W digital camera. What's the easiest way to get the video imported. Also, didn't prior versions of iPhoto accept this format?

As you don't mention the version of iPhoto, I can only guess that you've been caught in the gap between Apple and Samsung. Somethign changed with iPhoto 11 and it's quite rigid about how timecode is handled in video and there's something not quite standard in the Samsung timecode. Google around a bit for more.
And, as Larry say, try iMovie

  • Isplash and Colorize files save as JPEG but Iphoto won't import them in.

I bought both Isplash and Colorize apps to use the edited photos in an imovie video.  The programs both import my iphoto files seamlessly for coloring but when I try and save them in Iphoto or import them into iphoto I get this error.
the file could not be imported (the file is in the iphoto library)
    Help?!

the file could not be imported (the file is in the iphoto library)
iPhoto won't import files that are already in the working Library package. How did they get there?
I'm guessing that you did not use either of these apps as an external editor?
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • Can you import movie videos from SD camera card

Can you import movie videos (MP4) into an Ipad from an SD camera card on a Lightning cable ... or can you only do this from a laptop via Itunes? In other words, is Itunes the only way to get non-Itune videos to the Ipad? Hope I havent made this sound confusing.

To import the videos must follow a very strict naming convention.
All file names must have 8 characters for a name and be located in a folder named DCIM
    for example
    DCIM
    MOV_5789.mp4
You can't watch the videos off the cart, they must be imported into the iPad. They'll go into the camera roll, when you tap on them it'll open the video app and you can watch from there.
