IPhoto won't load library after upgrade (10/31/2011)

I upgraded my iPhoto yesterday through the AppStore.  When I opned iPhoto, it told me it needed to upgrade my library.  During upgrade a status bar showed the ongoing progress until it reached the end.  At that point the left column listing my "Events," Photos," "Faces," albums, etc. showed up, but the main space where the thumbnails/photos should appear remained grey with the round ticker (or whatever it's called) indefinately spinning (for at least 6 hours).  If I quit iPhoto, it would again ask me to upgrade my database everytime I launch it.  I can create a new library, but cannot opn the one I have.  I have seen other posts, but don't know if they apply to my situation.  Any help would be greatly appreciated (I have about 18k pics, which I would hate to lose!!!)
Thanks!

You have a back up, of course?
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

i did a clean install of lion on a formatted disc, them used migration manager to transfer my files.
now iphoto will not load the library. any library. i have two backups, both of which i have tried, but i photo just sits spinning it's gear symbol.
what's my best course of action do you think?

so i imported one of the backups by dropping it into the iphoto window.
Never import one Library to another - which you have done. As you can see, it's a mess. Massive duplication, missing metadata, organistion and so on. Simply, importing one Library to another is just not a way to do anything.
Restoring from back up means simply opening the restored Library.
    As to repairing the others:

  • Can't open my photo library after upgrading to iPhoto 11.  is it possible to load iPhoto 9.0.1 after loading 11?  have followed all other instructions but it still won't let me open iPhoto.

can't open my photo library after upgrading to iphoto 11.  Is it possible to download iphoto 9.0.1 after installing '11.  Have followed all the other instructions and am in a loop which doesn't allow me to access iphoto or my photos.

when iphoto wouldnt open we read the trouble shooting info and it said that we may have needed to download 9.0.1 if we had an older version.  We obviously didn't download it before the upgrade and wondered if it would cause problems or indeed solve the problem if we downloaded it now!
When we try to open iphoto is says:
To open your library with this version of iphoto it first needs to be prepared
To prepare the library use the iphoto library upgrader available from Apple.
We have downloaded this twice now and it still sends us this message when we try to open iphoto.

  • My labels have disappeared from every pic in my iPhoto library after upgrade to work with yosemite

MMy labels have disappeared from every picture in my iPhoto library after upgrading to work with Yosemite.

    Then that's likely the issue.
Select the drive on the Desktop and go File -> Get Info. You can find out the format in that window:

  • IPhoto does not recognize iPhoto Library after upgrade

Machine:  iMac, OS 10.8.2, iPhoto 9.4.1
Symptoms:  After upgrading iPhoto to 9.4.1 I cannot open my iPhoto library of some 30,000 photos.  I can see the library in the finder, but iPhoto doesn't want to link to it.  It did show in the library pane briefly the Events and Pictures at the full count, but then dropped to zero.
Actions:  Opened iPhoto with the OPTION key to specify which library iPhoto should use.  Not effective.
Opened iPhoto with the COMMAND AND OPTION keys and ran all actions from repairing permissions, rebuilding thumbnails, repairing the database, and rebuilding the database.  Results:  3 Events and 265 Photos.  32,577 photos in Trash.
What steps will restore the Library to its original state?  Will this restore meta-data, captions, events, dates, etc?

    Try this. Worked for me.
    - turn off your router
    - turn off you Mac's after removing all available printers
    - turn off all iDevices
    - do a factory reset of your printer remove all cables min. 30 sec.
    - turn on your router first
    - ran the network set up wizard
    - give your printer also a new name like "DeskJet 2015"
Something which you don't have used before.
    - turn on your Mac's and add your printer
    - turn on your iDevices at least.
    Should work after these steps.
It worked for me including all iDevices.

    To add to OT's advice:
You may need to delete your current iPhoto from the Applications folder, if it is a version of iPhoto '11, before the App Store will allow you to download it from the main page.
To locate iPhoto at the AppStore, open the "Featured" tab and enter "iPhoto" into the search field.

  • Missing files - corrupt library after upgrade to 11.1.4

I updated iTunes to 11.1.4, and after launching, it looked like it was updating my library as it's done in the past.  However, this time, after an hour I realized it had not yet completed, and a dialogue box asking about creating an iTunes U playlist was on the screen.  I tried to do so, but it just kept repeating.  So finally I stopped it, and now I have an file marked iTunes library (damaged) and an incomplete library.  I am missing thousands of songs compared to the last .itl I have in Previous iTunes Libraries.
I thought when iTunes did an upgrade to the library it was supposed to make a backup? If so, and I did the upgrade yesterday, why is the most recent file in Previous iTunes Libraries dated from four months ago?
How can I repair the damaged .itl file, as the one iTunes is using now as, as I mentioned, missing thousands of songs now.
Is there any sort of script or utility I can use to figure out exactly which files are missing from the current .itl in my library?
    Thanks in advance.

No, you need to do the backup as part of regular computer maintenance and before you do any software upgrades.  iTunes moves the old library into the previous library area but perhaps your update failed before it did that.

Yes, there's one on the Dougscripts web site that will crawl through a library.  In yur case it's probably just as easy to drag the whole iTunes media folder to Automatically Add to iTunes.  Anything already in the library it will ignore.  Anything not there it will add.

recently "lost" a purchased song, (Plus the accompanying artwork) from my i-tunes library, after upgrading my O.S. from windows XP to windows 7.
Is there any way to get the original song back, or, at least, re-purchase it?... I tried to do the latter, (It's still available in the itunes store) but, when I clicked on the buy link, I was informed that I had already bought it and was only given the option to, either, copy the link or send it to Facebook/Twitter
I also, inadvertently, deleted a couple of default playlists (Notably recently added) while attempting to get the song back.
Can someone out there, please, help me out. with the solution(s). (preferably step by step if possible, as I'm a bit of a Homer Simpson when it comes to this sort of thing) .. Doh!! :-(

  • My iPhoto won't load my thousands of photos! Will an upgrade help? Do I need to uninstall then reinstall iPhoto?

I went to the genius bar and the guy was so rude I had to leave after the hour and a half of waiting and listening to him cut off my questions.
Please help!!! I love my photos and my music more than anything on this computer!

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what do you see when iPhoto launches?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?
As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

  • IPhoto won't load my library, it just crashes

If anyone can help me with this I would be very grateful.
I recently backed up my iPhoto folder, which was running version 5. I then nuked my computer, and installed Tiger from scratch. Then I installed iLife, updated it using Software Update. I then moved my the "iPhoto Library" into the Pictures folder, and launched iPhoto. iPhoto told me that it needs to upgrade my library from a previous version. So I've tried that. It processes stuff for about 10 seconds, then iPhoto crashes.
I've tried everything I can think of. Trashed preferences. Deleted iPhoto completely and reinstalled. Tried using as a brand new user. Made a blank iPhoto Library folder and slowly added folders and files to it from the old backed up iPhoto Library. If anyone of you is a super-geek, here's what the crash report says:
    http://people.whitman.edu/~sprungde/iPhotoCrash.txt
I'm really stuck. It's taken me a long time to develop my iPhoto library, which I use here at work. I really don't want to lose all that organizational work. Does anybody have any ideas? I read the other "crash" posts and none of them quite fit my situation...
    Thanks in adavance,
    David

    Congrats to Lois.
Meanwhile, I've spent several hours trying some other stuff. For fun, I installed iPhoto 4. That didn't work either... at first. I also tried experimenting with removing the album XML file, as well as the "Albums" folder (this may be a hold over from the iPhoto 4 days?). I got to a point, while messing with these files, that iPhoto would actually load my library, but like Lois, it was full of blank grey squares, and not my photos.
My coworker made a google discovery that if you hold down Command(Apple) + Option in iPhoto 5, you can force iPhoto to try to rebuild your photo library. But then I would still get the "Upgrade or Quit" message, and the Upgrade option would crash iPhoto. My coworker also helped me with this little Unix command, which you run from the Terminal:
    sudo fs_usage | grep iPhoto
Make sure iPhoto isn't running before you type this in, and then once you start iPhoto, you'll get a huge list of what iPhoto is trying to do with your system. I've posted my results here: http://people.whitman.edu/~sprungde/Terminal-Output-iPhoto.txt
Note that when it's done, you need to push control + C to quit that Unix process (or whatever it's called).
What this report from the Terminal suggests is that right before it crashes, iPhoto seems to be doing something QuickTime-related. Is that the problem? I don't know, but I'm running Quicktime 7.0.3, and Apple just yesterday released an installer that lets you downgrade from 7.0.3 to 7.0.1, here's that link: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime701reinstallerforquicktime703.ht ml . Why has Apple released this? Don't know. Is it connected to my problem? Don't know yet either.
As it turns out, though, you can try that Library Rebuild trick in iPhoto 4 as well. The key command is Command(Apple) + Option + Shift. Now, I'm positive that on my previous machine, I was running iPhoto 5. But I have been using/upgrading iPhoto since it was first introduced, and a google source suggests that iPhoto 4 was less cranky about corruptions in the Library than iPhoto 5 is...
Anyway, I ran the Library Rebuild trick with iPhoto 4. It worked on it for a long time, then crashed. I relaunched, and... there were all my photos and albums! But wait, it's not time to cheer yet. I then ran iPhoto 5. It actually upgraded my Library, but...
It didn't quite work. It's riddled with problems. Some of my albums are completely empty. Every single picture has been squished into a square shaped thumbnail. A chunk-- I don't know how large yet-- of my pictures are just flat out missing. Pushing the edit button yields... nothing. Just a blank space where the picture should be.
By the way, I also called Apple. The nice tech support guy was sympathetic, but basically said that I would be able to manually drag all of my folders (in all those freakin' folders iPhoto creates in its Library) into iPhoto if I let iPhoto create a brand new, empty library... and of course the key thing is that I would lose all my albums, which for me is the whole point.
So, where does that leave me? Maybe I can experiment with downgrading Quicktime. Other than that, does anybody have any ideas? Thank God I have never fully committed to iPhoto for managing my assets. Let this be a warning to you all.

  • IPhoto taking 4 hours to update library after upgrade

Updated to Lion. Then updated iPhoto via app store. Upon opening iPhoto it says it needs to upgrade the library. OIt's now been doing this for 4 hours and I only have 2500 photos

  • What to do with your iPhoto library after "upgrading" to Photos?

I just updated OS 10.10.3 (Yosemite) and saw the Photos app installed. Also, the iPhoto app's icon is gone from the dock, but the app still remains the application folder. I started the Photos App and went through the library transition. My library is very larger, around 172 GB. Now that I have Photos installed, can I remove the iPhoto app and its library or do I need to keep because I now have a Photos library and an iPhotos library. I do get nervous about deleting libraries, so any advice or warnings would be nice. Thanks.

Keep it for now. Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support.

  • IPhoto Won't Load Images in iPhoto Library from External HD

    Hi all.
Accidentally unplugged my father's external hard drive which hosts his iPhoto library without ejecting. Since then, iPhoto has opened the library but displayed zero content. The photos are still there, I located them in the iPhoto Library's "Old Masters" folder, however, the "Masters" folder is empty. As I said, the images are there, but I suspect they aren't in the right place for iPhoto to see and display them. How can I get them back?
He has a mid-2007 iMac running both the latest version of Yosemite and iPhoto.
    Thanks!
    Kyle

No, unfortunately. He has a 320gb HD and a 307gb library. However, that post reflects all of the symptoms we had. I'll check it out. Thank you!
If substituting "Old Masters" for "Masters" does not help, there is not much hope to fix this. The iPhoto Library First Aid Tools did not work in the previous similar cases.
The best option would be to restore the library from the most recent backup.  Otherwise you can only copy the "Old Masters" out of the library and reimport them to iPhoto into a new library and essentially start over. IPhoto has no tools to connect missing original image files to the edited versions like Aperture has.
