Iphoto won't open certain pics

iphoto won't open certain pics from the thumbnail (which still exists)... A circle with an exclamation point comes up instead of the image.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

My iPhoto won't open. It says "Your photo library is either in use by another application or no longer readable." Please tell me I haven't lost all my pics?! I do not have them backed up. I have tried restarting my mac. Please Help!

What haven't you backed them up? You should always have a back up of any important material on your Mac. Make one now:
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
What version of iPhoto do you have?

  • IPhoto won't open since last update V9.5.1

My iPhoto won't open since the latest update (V9.5.1) was installed.  I do not get any error message, the icon bounces a couple times and then nothing happens.  I've tried the following solutions found in other forums:
-Using "iPhoto Library Manager" to rebuild library and repair iPhoto, did not work because "iPhoto failed to open"
-Removing the file iPhotoLock.data from Finder>Pictures>Right Click iPhoto Library>Show Package Contents, this also did nothing.
I can't find any other solution and I'm worried that I may lose my pictures (over 20GB of pics).
Is someone else having similar issues?

You don't always have a good current backup?  Without one you are 100% guarenteed to lose everything including your photos sooner or later - things do fail - Time Machine is included on yur Mac - use it - you eed a large external hard drive that is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) - once set up it is automatic and will save you when things go South
For now all you need is a copy of the iPhoto library
I stated in my original message that I have the most current version of iPhoto, iPhoto '11 V9.5.1.  Is there a way to reverse the update because I had no problems with it until the update was done automatically.
Yes - but since things are not wroking ti is important to verify facts - not work on assumptions
No - you can not "undo the update" easily but you can fix things

  • Downloaded torch - then uninstalled it, now iphoto won't open Error 10810

    Hi there,
I downloaded torch from the web to view a video. It did not work so I uninstalled torch again. Through that I lost Olympus DSS Player software, Firefox, and iphoto won't open. I get the error code 10810.
    Can anyone please help me?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Iphoto won't open, conflict with OS after update.

I am running an older version of iphoto. Version 8.1.2. I updated my OS recently to 10.8.2 and now iphoto won't open, I am getting a message that it is a software conflict. I know this is a problem people had awhile ago, but I am just updating things.  Can I just install a new version of iphoto??? Also, how can I view my pics on my MAC. I can't find where they are saved besides iphoto library, but I know they are there. Thanks

I am getting a message that it is a software conflict.
Can you give us the exact error message you get?

  • IPhoto won't open w/out latest version

I am currently running OS X 10.6 (according to my downloads history), my Mac says there are no updates to download, but iPhoto won't open.  It keeps saying that changes have been made using a newer version of iPhoto & that I need to quit & use the latest version of iPhoto.  How do I know what the latest version is, where do I find it & will downloading the latest version erase my iPhoto library?
Thanks to anyone ho can help me out!

You certainly do not open it to duplicate it. Select it in the finder and depress the command key and press d to duplicate. Or under the file menu select duplicate

  • Upgrade to Yosemite, iPhoto won't open and NTFS-3G could not mount error with new external HD

    Help!
I just did a software update to get OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 on my MacBook Pro.
Now iPhoto won't open and I get this error:
"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable....Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup."
So I do this and try to repair the database as suggested and I get another error:
"iPhoto will open as soon as the iPhoto library is available. Time Machine might be backing it up."
But it's not - no external hard drive is connected.
I'm terrified I can't get access to my photos (and I admit I haven't backed up with Time Machine for over a year - my mistake that I won't make again).
So I bought a brand new external hard drive (seagate for mac and pc, 2TB) so I could save only my photos to the hard drive (because I googled and read you can manually save your photos to disk by dragging and dropping the photo library onto the external hard drive).
But I can't even get the hard drive to work....I get this error
    "NTFS-3G could not mount /dev/disk2s1
at /Volumes/Seagate Backup Plus Drive because the following problem occurred:
/Library/Filesystems/fusefs.fs/Support/fusefs.kext failed to load - (libkern/kext) link error; check the system/kernel logs for errors or try kextutil(8).
the MacFUSE file system is not available (71)"
I google the issue again and it says to uninstall NTFS-3G but I actually think I just deleted it a long ago without uninstalling it properly??  I don't know....
    (a)  how do i fix iphoto
    (b)  how do i get external hard drives to work with this OS (I've read lots of posts and don't really understand the advice)
    (c)  how do i get all my photos onto the hard drive safely so I can import them onto a PC
Any assistance would be magic for this little lady!

    (c)  how do i get all my photos onto the hard drive safely so I can import them onto a PC
First see if you can reformat the EHD to MS-DOS FAT with Disk Utility.  If you can
open iPhoto and select all of the Events in the Events mode. Use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option and export to the EHD with these settings:
Select the destination for the export to be the EHD or a folder on the EHD.  This process will create a folder for each Event in your library with the same name as the Event and contain the original image files.  The EHD will be useable by a PC and the photos will be available also.

  • IPhoto won't open and keeps giving me an error message.

    Hi
My iPhoto won't open on my Macbook Pro.
All my software is up to date (OS X Yosemite 10.10.2) and there are no programme updates in my App Store.
I have deleted and reinstalled iPhoto, switched my Mac off and nothing helps.
In a similar thread people said to move iPhotoLock.data to my Desktop but that didn't work either.
Any help would be really appreciated!

  • My iPhoto won't open keeps on giving me an error message and my microsoft office two

my iPhoto won't open keeps on giving me an error message and my microsoft office two

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. More information means you get better assistance. (And no, more exclamation marks do not get help faster or make your issue seem urgent. They just make it seem like you have a stuck key )

  • How can I back up the iPhoto library when iPhoto won't open and I can't simply copy the iPhoto library packet because "some of the data in the packet cannot be read from or written to"?

How can I back up the iPhoto library when iPhoto won't open and I can't simply copy the iPhoto library packet because "some of the data canny be read from or written to"?

Regarding not being able to open iPhoto.  As a test  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Were you able to create a new library?
If so then your current library is damaged and needs to be repaired.
Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start
with Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • My iPhoto won't open and I can't download a new app.

My iPhoto won't open (having upgraded to Yosemite in Janurary 2015). When I try to open it it says that my version is not compatible with Yosemite and that I need to upgrade the app from the app store - but cannot find iPhoto on the app store.
I also do not have Photos installed, and similarly cannot find it on the app store.
I would really like to be able to retrieve my iPhoto library - will this be possible?
I have been backing up to an external hard-drive but don't know how/if I can retrieve my iPhoto from there if iPhoto no longer exists on most mac computers.
    Would appreciate some advice!

You need to upgrade to 10.10.3 - it's on software update.
That will give you the new Photos.app.
It will also be possible to download the up-to-date version of iPhoto:
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • Updated to 10.10.3 and now iPhoto won't open

I upgraded the OS 10.10.3 and now iPhoto won't open. It says "the version of iPhoto installed on this Mac is not compatible with OS X Yosemite.  Download the latest version for free from the Mac App Store."  However, when I go to the Mac App Store, there is no iPhoto.
I don't know what version of iPhoto I was running. I believe it was the most recent (9.6)
I also noticed that the iPhoto icon has a circle with a line through it
The support article says I can use iPhoto concurrently with the new photos

I have the same issue: updated from OSX 10.10.2 to 10.10.3, which killed iPhoto.
I have v.9.6, but apparently 9.6.1 is needed; I keep all my software updated, but never got an update notification.
Any way, I get the same 'dead' icon as above:
I can launch the program, but then I get:
And when I go searching the App Store (Belgium), I get:
Please, can anyone tell me how I can get a copy of iPhoto 9.6.1, which 'should' be compatible with my OSX (10.10.3).
Before updating the OS (from 10.10.2 to 10.10.3) I did make a clone on an external HD. I have now booted from that external HD, but nowhere can I find iPhoto 9.6.1, so that I can update.

  • I run Tiger OSX on one MacBook and SnowLeopard on another. Photos were downloaded from Tiger to SnowLeopard, and now iPhoto won't open on the Tiger Mac. Will upgrading iPhoto fix this problem?

What matters is the version of iPhoto you have on the different machines. Can you tell us what they are, and what exact error message you get.

  • Iphoto won't open due to a problem.

Iphoto won't open because of a problem.  The box says 'check with the developer to make sure iphoto works with this version of Mac OS X.  You may need to reinstall the application.  Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X.'
I have checked for updates.  I haven't done anything different or installed anything different since the last time I successfully used iphoto.  Help.....

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • New harddrive, now iPhoto won't open

The harddrive in my PowerBook G4 had to be replaced (again) but this time I thought I was smart because i had been using Backup to backup my stuff to an external harddrive on a regular basis.
Now iPhoto won't open because it says:
"You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."
I know that I had the latest version of iPhoto on the old harddrive but now have 4.0.3.
I have tried to update to 5 but it won't take that either:
"an eligible iPhoto application was not found in the location/Applications/iPhoto.app"
    even though it is there!
So, why didn't Backup backup my iPhoto 6 app?
What can I do to get my photos off of the external harddrive?
    Ugh!
    thanks,
    deneen

So, why didn't Backup backup my iPhoto 6 app?<<<</div>
Backup sw backs up DATA, i.e. those files that you created, such as photos, movies, word Docs, etc. It does not back up applications such as iPhoto etc. That should have been very obvious when you configured the Backup template.
What can I do to get my photos off of the external harddrive?<<<</div>
You need to load iPhoto-6 from your iLife-06 DVD (the same one that you used when you originally loaded iPhoto-6).
