IPhoto won't open copied IPhoto Library

We just bought two new MacBook Pros and imported all our 11,000 plus pictures into the first MacBook. After investing quite a bit of time organizing the pictures into 166 Events we have IPhoto on the first machine very much the way we want it. The resultant IPhoto Library file is 18.15 gb.
Now it is time to bring that library into the second MacBook Pro. We connected the two MacBook's via ethernet and successfully copied the IPhoto Library file from the one machine to the other.
Now we get to the problem. The result of the copy was a file in the second McBook named IPhoto Library copy. Whenever we try and open that file, IPhoto opens the main IPhoto Library.
How can we open the copy?

  • Lacie external drive won't open copied iTunes or iPhoto libraries?

I have copied my iPhoto and iTunes libraries onto my external Lacie hard drive and they won't open. All other copied files are fine including iMovies. iPhoto and iTunes have worked in the past. I am at a loss as to what has gone wrong.Any help would be much appreciated.

So your sure the app is pointed to the correct Library? Did you go through the step above?
Have a look in Home/Pictures... is there a iPhoto Library Folder in there? If there is, look in that folder and see if there's a file called library.iPhoto?
(For iTunes, do the same in Home/Music...
Assuming that the app is pointing to the correct Library on the External HD:
Try rebuilding the Library: hold down the apple and option keys, then launch iPhoto. Use the dialogue box to rebuild the Library. Choose all four options.
If that doesn't work, you may have a corrupted Library. Is the External formatted for Mac. Many disks come formatted for WIndows by default. Check this at Disk Utility. Select the disk in the Left Hand Pane and on the right hand side you'll see the format of the disk on the drop down menu.

  • Ask your question.stalled 10.5 and update on my G4 PB and now Itunes won't open due to library created by nwer version, How do I get the old version back ? thankfully I don't have anything in it, having deleted everything for room for the new install.

I just installed 10.5 and .8 update, from 10.4xx, Original 10.5 Archived and installed,   Now itunes won't, can't open due to "library created by a newer version error message,
How do I fix this ? uninstall ??? reinstall ?
I originally didn't have enough free space to intall the new OS so deleted everything/songs and some podcasts in itunes, backed up on another ipod.that hasn'r been updated so not missing anything, but now can't access\ another new(old) ipod and iphone (and not anytthing now) that wouldn't work on the old OS. due to not having the required itunes upgrade and not upgradeable on 10.4xx
    Thanks in advance.

After reinstalling itunes like PowerBloodRespect said, go into itunes on your account and connect your ipod. On the ipod summary tab, uncheck the box to launch itunes when the ipod is connected.
You also might want to go into itunes preferences on both accounts.
On the Device tab, put a checkmark in the box to prevent ipods from syncing automatically.

  • ITunes won't open. New Library error appears

I tried to open my iTunes library today and I got the message, "New iTunes Library," and no ability to open the program. I think I just completed the newest update a couple of days ago. I have no idea what to do to fix this problem. Please help me. I am super frustrated. Thank you.

    georgiamomma -
There are a few things you could try,but what worked for me was to download a fresh installation file from apple.
Your update got corrupted somehow. Doing the usual of going to control panel, clicking on Programs and Features, clicking on iTunes in the list and selecting REPAIR probably won't fix this issue, as sometimes repair reverts the installation to its previous version and then your iTunes Library.itl file can't open because it's from a newer version than the one REPAIR reinstalled. You can try that process, but I doubt it will work.
Do not change any files and/or their existing locations. Also, do not uninstall iTunes from your machine. Simply go to Apple's web site and download their latest version suitable for your particular computer. Once downloaded, double click the installer and follow the prompts. You should be able to launch itunes afterward, and your library will magically re-appear.
Again, DO NOT uninstall the old version, and do not rename, remove and/or replace any of the original files prior to installing the latest version over what's already on your machine. Good luck!

  • ITunes won't open because the library file is locked

The iTunes 4 Music Library file is locked, on a locked disc, or I do not have write permission, what do I do? It was working perfectly until I plugged in my iPod. I waited, the iPod did not appear. The computer then told me that I had improperly disconnected it, yet I didn't touch it. So at that point I did disconnect it. My computer froze, so I restarted it and now iTunes won't open. Help!

    Megan hello,
welcome to the Apple Discussions open the iTunes folder in your Music folder and select the iTunes 4 Music Library file... type cpmmand - D and this will duplicate the file... put the original file on the desktop and change the name of the duplicate to be the same as one you just moved ... double/click on this file after the name change... if all is okay you can trash the file on the desktop later..
let's know if it all works again Megan .... TP

  • New computer won't open my itunes library!

I just got a new computer and my itunes library was stored on an external hard drive. I'm all up and running so i move my itunes library onto the new computer and download the latest version of itunes. When i click on itunes it opens up but all that's on there is my purchased music??? So i plug in my ipod and i get a message telling me that my ipod is "synced with another itunes library. Do you want to erase this ipod and sync with this itunes libary?" No i don't! I want my whole library. Any ideas??

Did you move only your music, or did you move the *iTunes Library.itl* and *iTunes Music Library.xml* files as well? These files are the files iTunes recognizes as your library. If you did move the library files, where did you put them? By default, iTunes looks for these files in c:\users\my documents\my music\itunes (I think that's the right path for Vista).
If you moved these files to another location, you can point iTunes to it by holding the shift key when starting iTunes. You will then be asked where your library is. Simply browse to the iTunes Library.itl file is and your library should open.

  • IPhoto won't open library

My older MacBook (OS 10.5.8) running iPhoto8 won't open my photo library and instead give me the following error:
You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.
You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto.
I also have an iMac (OS 10.6.5) running iphoto9. Both machines are shared and I think I may have opened a few of my macbook photos from my imac over the network. Since then, I haven't been able to open iphoto8 on my macbook.
I went to the Apple Store for advice and they suggested buying an iLife'11 family pack, which I did. I stupidly didn't ask about OS compatibility and of course, the iLife upgrade is useless on my MacBook since I need SnowLeopard to install it. Sheesh.
This is not the elegant software transition I had been expecting. Any suggestions for a fix other than going back to the store and buying a snowleopard license for my macbook and upgrading everything to iLife 'll? This seems to be a very expensive fix for a forced compatibility problem. Help.

If you opened your '08 library with '09 you were warned that the library would be converted and would no longer be accessible by the previous version an you had to approve that conversion - it can not be undone
Your choices are to upgrade '08 to '09 (or upgrade both to '11) or to create a new library losing all of the edits, projects, albums, metadata changes etc - having a new library with just the original photos from the old library

  • ITunes 10.5 beta to iTunes 10.5 won't open iTune library "damaged .itl" PLEASE HELP

I've been using iTunes 10.5 beta not sure which version on my MBP and i now installed iTunes 10.5 on my iMac but it won't open my iTune library. its giving me an error saying something like "damaged .itl" PLEASE HELP I'm in ****!!!!

    Pretty simple work around:
    1. locate com.apple.mail.plist in ~/Library/Preferences folder. Move to the desktop (you can replace it if this does not work).
    2. Restart Mail, and set up the account again.
    3. From the File menu, "Import Mail Boxes". These will be in a folder marked POP or IMAP, in ~/Library/Mail. You may need to do more than one import, depending on how many accounts you have.
They will be in a folder called "Imported". You can now make new folders, and move emails, or just move entire folders.

Much appreciated if someone can help resolve; I've already tried reinstalling, uninstalling+reinstalling and reverting to 10.7 (but that version won't open since the library file's already been updated by 11.2 & thus, unreadable by 10.7.)
    Thanks!

    found this in another post and it worked for me;
OK, so right after posting this I found this advice by complete chance:
If you've already tried a complete uninstall and reinstall try opening iTunes in safe mode (hold down CTRL+SHIFT) as you start iTunes, then going to Edit > Preferences > Store and turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. You may find iTunes will now start normally.
I opened itunes in safe mode, turned of "show itunes in the cloud purchases" and now itunes works as normal, which is great.  I checked on my girlfriends side of the computer and that box was unchecked on hers which is why it had been working.  I don't use the cloud for anything so I can only assume that itunes was trying to communicate with a cloud (account?) that does not exist and that conflict was causing the program to crash.
If anyone has a better explanation for the Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases feature and why it was messing up my itunes I would love to hear it.  Thanks.

  • How can I back up the iPhoto library when iPhoto won't open and I can't simply copy the iPhoto library packet because "some of the data in the packet cannot be read from or written to"?

How can I back up the iPhoto library when iPhoto won't open and I can't simply copy the iPhoto library packet because "some of the data canny be read from or written to"?

Regarding not being able to open iPhoto.  As a test  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Were you able to create a new library?
If so then your current library is damaged and needs to be repaired.
Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start
with Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • I just backed up my photos by copying my iPhoto Library onto an external drive. Now the Library on my MacBook won't open. I can only open the photos if the external is plugged in. How can I resolve this issue?

I just backed up my photos by copying my iPhoto Library onto an external drive. Now the Library on my MacBook won't open. I can only open the photos if the external is plugged in. How can I resolve this issue?

    Exactly what did you do?
    The correct steps are
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
My guess is that that you have not switched iphoto to use the external drive yet - opttion launch and select libary

My iPhoto won't open. It says "Your photo library is either in use by another application or no longer readable." Please tell me I haven't lost all my pics?! I do not have them backed up. I have tried restarting my mac. Please Help!

What haven't you backed them up? You should always have a back up of any important material on your Mac. Make one now:
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
What version of iPhoto do you have?

  • Accidentally partially deleted wrong iphoto library, iphoto won't recognised external HD copy

    Hello!
I'm trying to free up some space on my MacBook OS X 10.5.8. with only 9.27GB free space left. I work a lot with images/graphics.
As iphoto is the main space guzzler at 33.84GB, I was planning to move the iphoto library onto my external HD and access it from there. I now keep HD connected as my portable HD2 has started to develop problems.
First hiccup: when I copied iphoto library from Macbook to HD, an unreadable files alert popped up with 170 in the list. I did this the other day. I left it there to solve another day.  Coming back to it today, I opened it up to test it and it seemed fine other than the alert popping up again. I was trying to work out what the files referred to (files ending in ....cache...ithmb) so I could identify the problem files but it's all just a bit beyond me.
I was going to just delete that version and go through the process again using the sound info on this forum but doh! I only went and trashed the main iphoto library didn't I? I'd already started emptying the trash when I realised so I stopped the deletion immediately.
When I view Show Package Contents I can see that the most recent original 2012 photos are gone but they are in the modified folder ( I have other copies saved so that's not a huge problem) but  I can't really tell yet what's else further back might have been deleted.  Anyway I thought that if I pointed iphoto to the copied library on my HD that would be fine but it won't open it. I can highlight it and click on OPEN but nothing happens. when I look at the Package Contents it only goes up to the Cache folder, no library or other images.
What can I do to clean up this mess, have iphoto on HD so my macbook can run smoothly again! NB with my most recent accidental deletion I now have 13.31GB free.
    Baby steps help appreciated!!
    Sacha

No, unfortunately. He has a 320gb HD and a 307gb library. However, that post reflects all of the symptoms we had. I'll check it out. Thank you!
If substituting "Old Masters" for "Masters" does not help, there is not much hope to fix this. The iPhoto Library First Aid Tools did not work in the previous similar cases.
The best option would be to restore the library from the most recent backup.  Otherwise you can only copy the "Old Masters" out of the library and reimport them to iPhoto into a new library and essentially start over. IPhoto has no tools to connect missing original image files to the edited versions like Aperture has.

  • IPhoto library won't open

My iPhoto library on my new Macbook Pro suddenly won't open.  When I open up iPhoto, it now takes me to a screen that says "which photo library do you want iPhoto to use".  There are no options.  I then click on "other library", and I can see my iPhoto library.  It is 53GB large....  But when I select it and click open, nothing happens....it won't open.   It was working fine last time I used my computer!  Any thoughts?
    iphoto version 9.5.1
Thank you so much for your time and expertise,
    Zack

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
