IPhoto won't open - says unreleased version of iphoto

Hi,
I've been using iphoto without problems since I got my powerbook in March 06. I'm currently overseas and have been uploading hundreds of photos each week. Tonight, I went to upload pictures from today and they would not load - it said they were an unrecognised file format. I unplugged my camera, shut down the computer and tried again.
Something really strange has happened. I turned it back on and the items in my dock were like they were when you first install, my bookmarks have disappeared in safari, and when i try to open iphoto it says: the photo library was created with an unreleased version of iphoto. Please quit & upgrade this library by opening it in iphoto 2 or iphoto 4."
I am using iPhoto 5.0.4. What is going on??
Please help, I really need to upload these photos and make sure the other ones are not lost.
I don't have any installation disks with me as I am away...
Thanks!

Is there any way you can get a smaller external drive. Do you have an iPod maybe? Or maybe a small USB drive?
You need to copy the old library to some other source, either an external drive, or an iPod, or to disc. Your hard drive needs some more free space so you can't really create a new library and import the photos from the old library into it...not enough space. If you can get your old library copied to another source, then delete it from your hard drive, then you can create a new library and import the newer photos from your holiday.
Once you get home, you can copy the old library to your larger external. We can then work on getting the photos from that library accessible to you by creating another new library on the external and importing the photos from the old library into the new one on the external.
First you need to get the old library on the PB copied to another source so you can delete it from your PB.
So, can you buy a smaller external drive or do you have an iPod to copy it to?

  • Iphoto message: library created with unreleased version of iphoto

Hi I'm brand new to the forum--know others have had a similar issue--
I get the message that says library was created with an unreleased version of iphoto, and I should quit and open with version 2 or 4. when this message appears the only choice is to quit--iphoto menu bar is not available.
I'm also new to Mac. I bought my powerbook August 2005, but I can't even open iphoto to tell exactly which version I have. I imagine its 5.something.
I have about 3500 photos on here, but can only see them through preview, not my iphoto library. Wondering if this is related to the fact that my 512 usb memory stick seems to have been making my entire computer freeze (there are photos stored on it). Is it possible I picked up a virus from a PC via my memory stick and it's messing with iphoto? please help. I am completely dependent on this machine--I use it for 8-10 hours every day.
    thanks,
    RF

    Hi RF,
Just highlight the iPhoto.app in your applications folder and in the next column it should tell you the version (viewing in column view)
I don't know the reason you go this message, though you are not the first one.
So far I have not seen any solution for that error message in these discussions. If you have a recent backup of your iPhoto Library folder then take the old library out of the Pictures folder and put your backup library in there (I suggest you backup the backup before you do this) Launch iPhoto and hopefully everything will be back to normal. If you don't have a backup then...
The only thing I can tell you to do right now is to create a new library and import/add to the library to reimport your images.
    these are the steps:
    Close iPhoto
Drag the iPhoto Library folder to the desktop
    Launch iPhoto
In the next window that opens choose to create a new library.
When the new empty library opens go to File/add to library
In the next window navigate to the library on your desktop and choose it.
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
You will have to redo your albums, keywords, etc.
    Good luck!

  • IPhoto won't open using this version

I got ilife 11 just to get iweb and ever since i installed it i have been unable to open iphoto it always says you have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iphoto. do you want to quit and use the latest version of iphoto, or do you want to create a new photo library and the only option i have is to click on quit then it just closes everything out. I have thousands of family pictures that are irreplaceable in iphoto and im anxious to see them come back. thanks you

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

I recently replaced my iphoto '08 in my macbook pro running under lion with iphoto '11. i did the same with all the other ilife 11. they all worked except iphoto. As i was replacing iphoto 08 with iphoto '11 the previous iphoto 08 files were deleted in the applications folder. the new iphoto doesnt work and when i try to load back the old iphoto 08 doesnt work as well. I copied the ilife files from ma co_worker with a macbook pro 13inch, same as mine. any help please,.i have tried to solve this with no success.

this is the error that comes,
iphoto can not be opened because of a problem.
check with the developer to make sure iphoto works with this version of mac os. you may need to reinstall the application. be sure to install any available updates for the aplication and mac os x.
i have installed all the updates including the iphoto latest updates. but it wouldnt solve the problem. any help please

  • IPhoto error, won't open, says it needs the most recent version

I have an early 2009 mac pro desktop with 6 megs of ram. iPhoto error, won't open, says it needs the most recent version to work but the most recent version won't work either because I have Mountain Lion. I downloaded iPhoto from the App store and the store said "you can't download the most recent version because you don't have Mavericks - would you like to download an older version?" So I said yes and downloaded it. It is actually the Mavericks version that downloads anyway. So I used an older version from my other computer and updated it to version 9.4.3. When I try to open it it says you need the most recent version. My library is on an external drive which was downgraded from Mavericks back to Mountain Lion because Mavericks wouldn't work properly on my computer. Now no version will open.
What can I do? Thank you for your help in advance.

    The exact error message is:
THe library "iPhoto Library" cannot be opened. To open it, you must upgrade to the latest version of iPhoto. Then the Quit button is at the bottom of the dialog box.
I did install iPhoto 9.5 when I installed Mavericks, Keep in mind that all of my photos are not on the boot drive but they are on an external drive. I then got rid of Mavericks and did a fresh install of Mountain Lion then I copied the contents of a previous drive that only had Mountain Lion on it. 9.5 wouldn't open in Mountain Lion so I copied an older version from another computer and updated it to 9.4.3. 9.4.3 says you must upgrade to the latest version and 9.5 says you need an older version. So I am stuck now.

  • IPhoto will not open - says: Library created with unreleased version

I can't even open the app. due to a message that reads "The photo library was created with an unreleased version of iPhoto. Please quit and update this photo library by opening it in iPhoto 2 or iPhoto 4." I haven't done anything to the library recently. I did install Photoshop Elements and upgrade to OS 10.5 within the last few days. I got the same message in iPhoto before the upgrade to OS 10.5 however. Can anyone help me get my iPhoto open?

    Olla:
Give Terence's suggestion a try. You'll end up with a new library and your old one for further attempts at fixing.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

What haven't you backed them up? You should always have a back up of any important material on your Mac. Make one now:
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate

  • Fresh install of iPhoto 11 won't open - say's it needs update.

    Hi,
I need some help here. I just re-installed my MBP (mid 2010) with OSX Lion, got all updates. After that i installed my iLife 2011 software bundel, and got every update downloaded and installed. Rebootet and then tried to start iPhoto (for the first time since my re-install). Now it says: "In order to open iPhoto, you need to update to the lastest version." Problem is, that i allready did this before i tried to start iPhoto - So i'm stuck. iPhoto has been installed from the iLife 2011 bundel DVD, and not from the App Store.
Hope some of you can help me. I have searched the discussion forum, and i all i find is some guides aboout deleting som cache files, but these does not exsist on my mac, because iPhoto has never beed opened.
Ps. I made a backup of my iPhoto library, before i did the Lion reinstall - so nothing is lost.
(sorry for my bad english, i'm from Denmark )
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi,
I had the same happen to me, i updated with an ilife11 dvd, iphoto now won't open says i need to do the software update but everything is up to date when i run the update.  I tried to do the steps you suggested above, but i can't 'get info' on iphoto to see what version i have, when i try to click the icon the same little box pops up saying i need to update to latest version, run software update now to install.  I did try searching another way and it looks like i have iphoto 9.0 on Mac and last modified last night when i did what i thought was an ugrade. i was under the impression i was upgrading my current iphoto 9 to iphoto 11 when i did the ilife dvd.  (im computer illiterate) anyhow i can't open iphoto now and im wondering if i've just lost all my pictures that i've never backed up, at this point i could care less about upgrading to the newest app, i just want all my photos back.  Do you think i should put the dvd back in and try it again or will that just mess everything up now (new apps and other updates that came on that dvd seem fine when i open them)
    I'm using a Mac OS X version 10.6.8

  • Iphoto won't open as it says it's being updated..

iphoto won't open as it says it is being updated! but there are no updates happening...! help please.  I have no backup for my photos so don't want to uninstall iphoto incase I loose all my photos.

If you have no backup you are 100% guaranteed to lose your photos sooner or later.  Start a good ack up ASAP is you care about your photos
Uninstalling iPhoto is not the solution. You have a library corruption problem.
What version of iPhoto and of the OS?
A general solution is to back up the iPhoto library, depress and hold the option and command kets, launch iPhoto and use the resulting first aid window to rebuild the database

  • IPhoto won't open w/out latest version

I am currently running OS X 10.6 (according to my downloads history), my Mac says there are no updates to download, but iPhoto won't open.  It keeps saying that changes have been made using a newer version of iPhoto & that I need to quit & use the latest version of iPhoto.  How do I know what the latest version is, where do I find it & will downloading the latest version erase my iPhoto library?
Thanks to anyone ho can help me out!

You certainly do not open it to duplicate it. Select it in the finder and depress the command key and press d to duplicate. Or under the file menu select duplicate

    Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
    2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database.
