IPhoto won't stay open - too many photos
I have a PowerMac G5 with 1.5 GB RAM and about 82GB of a 150GB HD available. I recently passed the 25,000 photo mark in my iPhoto5 library. Since then the libaray can not be opened, or shuts down consistently after being open for about 5 seconds.
What can I do to get iPhoto working again?

My iphoto won't stay open for more than a second. What could be wrong?
You can see more than any of us here. If there is no other indication beyond what you have described, then it could be anything. We don't even know if you have somehow deleted the application.

IPhoto won't stay open for more than 20 seconds
I have tried following the three key steps to solving this problem (clearing the prefrences thing, checking with a new account and the disk utility permissions). Nothing is working. My iPhoto will not stay open for longer than 20 seconds. In other accounts i create it works just fine. I have had my Mac for 2 years but only used iPhoto once before.

HT4236 iPhoto not recognizing iPhone with too many photos.
I recently took a lot of pictures using my iPhone (about 15,000 cos I was doing a time lapse). Now when iPhoto & Image Capture will not recognize my iPhone when I plug it in; the phone still shows up in iTunes.
I hooked up another iPhone onto my Mac and it syncs fine. I also hooked up both phones onto a Windows PC, the other phone is working fine but I am unable to access the photos in the phone with 15,000 photos.
How can I get my photos off the phone?
Thanks in advance.This is from Mac Help. It is a good idea to create another account to use in troubleshooting situations such as this. After you create the new account, open iDVD from that account. Try creating a small project to see if you are having the same problems. Post back with your results.
_Adding a new user account to your computer_
You can create individual user accounts for each person who uses your computer. Each new user has a separate home folder and can adjust his or her own preferences without affecting other users.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Accounts.
If some settings are dimmed, click the lock icon and type an administrator name and password.
Click Add and type the user's name.
If you don't want to use the short name generated automatically, type a new short name. (Once the account is created, you won't be able to change the short name.)
Type the user's password in the Password and Verify boxes.
Type a hint to help the user remember the password if they have trouble remembering it at login.
Click Parental Controls and select options to determine what the user can do with the computer.
If you change your mind while you're creating a new user account, click Delete to cancel. -
IPhoto won't stay open (I know it's been asked)
The only pieces of advice I've found is to reinstall, delete the plist, and delete the cache. I have done all of these at least 5 times, and it still opens for about 10 seconds, then shuts down and gives me the error message I will put at the end of this. I have also tried the "rebuild the library" and "try a new, empty library" suggestions with option-command-open, but it still shuts down almost immediately after opening. I have the most recent update, at least I think I do. It's iPhoto '11, v 9.2.3. I haven't updated the pictures (at least I think that's what it's telling me to do in the brief window of being open then changing its mind), as this problem started to happen before the last update and is, obviously, still a problem. I got a MacBook because I am incredibly computer illiterate, and right now I really want to smash the stupid thing. Not really, but this is very aggravating, because I love iPhoto & would like to be able to use it again. I even downloaded Picassa after this started, but I'm not too fond of it and would really like to go back to iPhoto. I'm not having any issues with any other software, and I'm pretty sure every thing is up to date. Also, I don't have MacKeeper or whatever it's called, which somebody had a similar issue, because I don't like the idea of my Mac getting herpes. Okay, I think that about covers everything, but I'm a bit frazzled and incredibly bad at this stuff. Keep in mind that I need any advice to be relatively simple, as I am abysmal at technology. Thanks for any help.

There's reinstall and then there's reinstall. Did you delete the iPhoto receipts before reinstalling iPhoto?
Delete the current application and all files with "XXXX" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder, reinstall XXXX from the disk it came on and apply the latest updater.
We're just users here like yourself trying to help you and trying to decipher what you've done previously. But it's difficult to read a bunch of text that runs all together without any breaks to separate different topics within a post.
So if you want to get that chip off you shoulder, your head where it belongs and respond to our inquiries civilly I'll be glad to try to work you thru your problem.

Assuming you haven't made changes to your library with a newer version:
try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
If that doesn't help:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

AE Network Won't Stay Visible -- Too Many Networks?
I just moved to a new apartment in Astoria, Queens, and was having trouble getting onto the new roommates' wireless network (and learned that one of the other roommates, a fellow Mac user, couldn't get on it either). So I bought a new Airport Extreme and set it up yesterday in place of the old Linksys router. This took HOURS, because I couldn't get a signal in the next room (where my computer is) strong enough to maintain a connection to the base station for long enough to go through the entire setup process. As it turns out, when I run MacStumbler, there are -- no joke -- TWENTY other wireless networks of varying strengths and visibility around me. I eventually got mine up and working, but ever since, I'm lucky to get 20 minutes of internet access before my iMac drops the connection to the network.
Here are the gory details: The network is on channel 1. The twenty networks around us are all on channels 6, 8, or 11. When I run MacStumbler, our network consistently has the strongest signal strength -- around 70, compared to the other networks in the 40s or 50s -- but it also appears very infrequently, only poking its head above the fray of competing networks once every couple of minutes. A couple of networks with weaker signal are much more consistent, almost never disappearing from MacStumbler's view. Ours, apparently, likes to play hide-and-seek. In general, when our network does appear for a moment, it's impossible to connect -- the Mac tries hard for a bit, and then gives me the password prompt even though the password is saved in my keychain. I enter the password, and the connection fails or is timed out.
The Airport Extreme (one of the brand new 802.11n ones) has to be set up in my roommate's bedroom, since he's on a paleocomputer without WiFi and must be jacked into it. The distance from the router to my computer is maybe fifteen to twenty feet total, with a closet and wall in between. The closet does have some metal fixtures (rods and hangers), but is mainly wood and fabric.
My computer is a 20" iMac G5. I have my doubts about its WiFi antenna to begin with, since I also have an Airport Express (which is not currently on the network, since I can't hold a signal long enough to get it rebooted and connected onto the network, otherwise I'd use it to improve my signal strength) which I tried plugging into the power outlet DIRECTLY BELOW my computer, and the iMac only registered a signal strength of about 80. At one point yesterday I did manage to get the Airport Extreme onto the network as a repeater, and was enjoying a reasonable connection until the two base stations lost communication with each other, and I haven't been able to get back onto the internet since.
I also have a Powerbook G4 which I wandered around the house testing signal strength with; I tried setting the Powerbook literally on top of the Airport Extreme, and got the same problem wherein the signal was exceptionally good -- 116 -- but only when it appeared, which was once every couple of minutes. Then it vanished.
I've also enabled interference robustness and changed my IPv6 settings to local-link only, per suggestions in another thread I was reading on Ask Metafilter, but those don't seem to have made much of a difference.
So: what are my options? Is there something I can do to make the network consistent, and not be playing this "I'm here, I'm not here" game? Is this likely to be a placement problem for the router, or more likely to be an antenna problem with my computer? For the record, I'm still running 10.5.1, as I can't get connected to the internet long enough to download any software updates. I just need some sense of what I can do to address this problem: could the router be defective, or is this just always going to be a problem because of the unbelievable amount of wireless traffic around me on the other channels? Do I need to give up and buy a really long ethernet cable?With twenty wireless networks (and who knows how many 2.4GHz portable telephones) competing for radio spectrum, I think your ability to run a stable, dependable wireless network with a reasonable data transmission speed are slim to nil. An ethernet cable sounds like the best option.

Keyword Search showing too many photos
I have over 22,000 photos and over 300 keywords for them. Sadly I cannot search by keyword since the keyword list only shows the last 146 keywords on the screen (a known bug that, in my case, only shows keywords beginning with p-z) and there is no way to scroll to any keywords before it. I have therefor taken to entering the keywords manual in the "all" field, which worked fine in iPhoto 08, but reveals way too many photos in iPhoto 11. From what I can tell, if there is one photo with that keyword in any given event, it will show me every photo in that event. So, for example, if I want to see "Jane" and there is one photo of Jane in the Hawaii" event, it will show me every photo in the "Hawaii" event.
I have occassioanlly stumbled upon workarounds for this, I think entering a space after the keyword or something, but can't recall any concrete solution that seems to work now. Can anyone help me with this extremely frustrating problem? (And I know about Smart Albums. That won't solve this one.)Did you ever solve this problem. I have it too and it's driving me crazy.

Hi Terrence, this is what happens, all too often when I click on something, sometimes it takes me 5 more clicks on the mouse while moving the cursor around to get rid of it. The one below popped up as I clicked on my junk mail.
The next one popped up when I was trying to get on to a site. This happens all the time. Don't know why it is happening. It happens on iPhoto, Aperture, everywhere I go, FaceBook...everywhere and at any time. So frustrating. I don't know if this is normal, but this was happening just before my last mac died a year ago. -

Have a current backup.
Hold the option command keys and launch iPhoto to launch the First aid.
Start with repairing permissions first and proceed from there.

There are way too many photos on my internal hard drive. I have older libraries, and newer libraires in iPhoto and Aperture 2. What is the best way to find and reduce the number of duplicate photos/libraries before upgrading to Aperture 3?

Back up first.
I would probably wait for the merge function of the latest version before merging. Be sure to verify every merge.
Merge Libraries, then from within Aperture move images to referenced on external hard drives.

My ipod touch 4g keeps telling me that I have too many photos and videos and will not let me download apps. The BBC News live bookmark that is shown opened in that screenshot always comes back closed after I close Firefox and reopen it. (This is true for ALL other live bookmarks as well. Formerly, in earlier versions of Firefox, the open ones always remained open, and the closed ones closed, which is the correct behavior, imho.) -
