IPhoto won't upgrade! Transition from Macbook Pro to iMac

I originally had a Macbook Pro and I loved it with the iPhoto software. Yet, I recently bought a new iMac and tried to load my pictures from my Macbook Pro (via External HD), yet it says that the my iPhoto needs to be upgraded. I click Upgrade and it says my current Photo library cannot be opened using this version of iPhoto.
Not quite sure what to do. I have to use Lightroom to open and edit all of my photos when I love using iPhoto to upload and share pictures.
Any help will be great. Thank you!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
tied to load my pictures from my Macbook Pro (via External HD), yet it says that the my iPhoto needs to be upgraded
How did you load your pictures from the MBP to the iMac? Did you just copy the library package to your Pictures folder on the iMac?
If so make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1, #2 and #6.
Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

What is the best way to transfer iPhoto from MacBook Pro to iMac?

the only way is Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • How do you move iMovies from MacBook Pro to iMac?

How do you move iMovies from MacBook Pro to iMac?  I started some projects on my MacBook Pro but would rather have the larger working area provided on the iMac large 27 inch screen.

    Hi there rainyri!
The easiest way for you to do this is to transfer the information to an external drive as an intermediary, then transfer the information from your drive to the internal drive on your iMac. We have an article that explains the steps for doing this, and it can be found here:

  • How do i transfer my data from macbook pro to iMac?

i just bought a iMac.  How do i transfer my itunes library, photos, files via bluetooth from macbook pro to my iMac?  Much thanks for your help!

I believe that when you boot your computer for the first time and you are following the onscreen instructions you are prompted whether you want to transfer data from an old mac or PC. If you click 'transfer from an old mac' and follow the onscreen instructions, this may work.
If you have already skipped this step you could use iCloud to transfer data. If you make sure that everything you want to transfer is synced in iCloud, this may also work.

  • Transferring iPhoto book from MacBook Pro to iMac

    Hi everyone
I am the proud owner of a new iMac. I am trying to transfer an album I started on my husband's MacBook Pro, but all I can do is to export the photos...I already imporated all my events from the MacBook to the iMac. Now, I was to save the work that i have done on the album itself. Is the transfer feasible? Tx

By album do you mean book?  If so then you can't transfer a book from one library to another because the book is virtual, existing only in the database files of the library.
What you can do is duplicate the library with the book and in the copy delete all photos excecpt for those in the book. Then copy the book to the other Mac and use it to complete the book.  You can copy additional photos/albums from the large library to the book library with the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager.

  • Transferring iPhoto Library from MacBook Pro to iMac

I am trying to transfer my iPhoto library from my MacBook Pro to my iMac. My software is up to date on both computers. I put my MacBook Pro into firewire mode and tranferred over the iPhoto Library package file. I put it directly into my iPhoto library folder. I double clicked on the file and iPhoto opened, but it said that the file can not be read. Is this because on my laptop I have iPhoto 7.1.5 and on my desktop I have 6.0.6? I have also migrated from the iMac to the MacBook Pro a few years ago, could that be causing a problem? I called Apple about it and they said there is no reason this should not be working.

Is this because on my laptop I have iPhoto 7.1.5 and on my desktop I have 6.0.6?
This is exactly why. iPhoto 6 cannot read the iPhoto 7 Library. No version of iPhoto can read a later version's Library. The app is backward compatible, not forward compatible.

  • IMovie and iPhoto won't update on Used Macbook Pro Retina

I purchased a used macbook pro retina and did the usually initial setup for the laptop. My issue is that these two stock apps won't update in the app store. I recieve a message asking me to login using the ID that was used to purchase the app. I am assuming this is the ID of the previous owner , which of course I do not have. Any Ideas ???

The MBP needs to be disassociated from the original owners Apple ID. The original owner needs to call Apple Care to request that. Or if you have a sales receipt that proves you legally have purchased the MBP they may do it for you.
Then the MBP needs to be wiped clean and the most recent version of OS X that shipped with the Mac installed using OS X Recovery. You can also reinstall the iLife apps, which you should accept into your Apple ID in the Mac App Store on the Purchaes pane.

  • Tv won't recognize hdmi from macbook pro, but will from ipad

I have a new Toshiba TV (40L5200U) that will recognize HDMI input from an IPad, but not from a MacBook Pro (running 10.6.8).  I'm connecting through a Rocketfish Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (RF-AP305), but the TV says "no video signal."  Display Preferences shows 1024x768, which the TV user guide lists as an acceptable input (XGA), but when I detect displays the computer doesn't recognize the TV.  I can't see an Arrangements tab.  The computer does give output through this port to a VGA adapter for a projector.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

It is vital to push the Mini DisplayPort adapter into the Mac socket until essentially ALL of the metal is inside the socket.
Use About This Mac > ( More Info ) > Displays to examine the NAME of the display attached. Until you get the make&model popping up there, you have not made a solid connection.
"Supported resolutions" for many displays are not supported in the same way on each of the available ports. 1024x768 mat be an excellent VGA resolution that does not work at all across HDMI. Be certain [√] Mirroring is turned OFF to allow the displays to be set independently.

  • Transferring Photos from MacBook Pro to iMac G5

I have been importing all my photos from my digital SLR to my Macbook Pro. But... now I am out of HD space. I want to transfer all my pics to my iMac G5 with much more HD space. What is the most effective way to do this? If I burn all the pictures to DVD, then import them to my desktop, will it import the original and edited versions of the photo?
Next... should I transfer the photos before or after I upgrade to iLife '08???
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks!

I assume you've been using iPhoto?
Simply copy the iPhoto Library Folder from your Pictures Folder to the same location on the iMac. Then, to prevent any file permission issues, Download BatchMod from
    http://macchampion.com/arbysoft/
And apply it to the iPhoto Library Folder using the settings found here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/toad.hall/.Pictures/Forum/BatChmod.png
(Credit to Old Toad for this one).
And, yes, do it before upgrading. One less variable to deal with.

  • Sharing internet connection from MacBook Pro to iMac G3

My goal here is to connect my iMac G3 (that I just got) to my cable internet connection. However, there are some hurdles in doing so. On the other side of my house lies my modem. It's connected to a D-Link wireless router to give my PC, Xbox 360, Wii and MacBook Pro internet all at the same time. It's too far to drag an ethernet cable, and the iMac G3 doesn't have an AirPort card (and $99 for a used wireless b adapter is ridiculous).
From what I've gathered online, OS X can share it's internet connection with another Mac via FireWire, ethernet or AirPort. AirPort is out of the question since that's how my MacBook Pro connects to the net, and since the iMac G3 doesn't have an AirPort card. I don't have anything that uses FireWire, so othe port on both machines is free, but I also don't have a cable to connect the two. I do, however, have a few spare ethernet cables, so I'd like to get this setup using them.
Thing is, I can't get it to work. Simply enabling internet sharing in System Preferences does diddly squat, and no connection is found with Network Utility on the iMac. What I'd really like here is for someone to either instruct me on how to get this to work, or point me in the direction of such an article. I haven't been able to find anything with Google so far...
Now, my MacBook Pro obvioously runs 10.4.9 with all the updates. The iMac G3, however, is running 10.3.5 at the moment. While I will be upgrading it to tiger in the near future, I kinda wanted to play around with Internet Expplorer before doing so. Being new to the Mac and all (the MBP is my first Mac), I've never used Internet Exporer on the Mac -- or 10.3 at all really, for that matter. So if it can be done, I'd like to do this with 10.3 still on the iMac, though I could upgrade it to tiger if I HAD to.
Should it matter, the iMac G3 is a 400MHz indigo unit with 256MB RAM and a 10GB HDD. It's the summer '00 model. The MacBook Pro is a revision A system with a 1.83GHz Core Duo inside. More detailed specs can be found within my profile on here, I believe.
Sorry for such a long winded post...

Lost me there... is it Ethernet cables you're using even though it's too far? Or What?

  • How to undo Safari copying bookmarks, history, favorites, and reading list from Macbook Pro to iMac after Yosemite update?

I just updated my iMac 27inch Mid 2011 to Yosemite 10.10.2.  I have a Macbook Pro that I primarily use for everyday stuff. I upgraded to Yosemite a while ago on my macbook. Now that I upgraded my iMac, it transferred everything saved in Safari on my macbook pro to my iMac. My favorites, history, bookmarks, and reading list were copied over. This is driving me nuts! I had a separate set of data saved on the iMac because I use it for different purposes. All of the original bookmarks, favorites, history, etc. on my iMac are now gone. I logged out of iCloud (which was a feature I did not enjoy when upgrading to Yosemite) yet all of the safari data from my laptop is still cloned onto my iMac. Please tell me there is a way to undo this or refresh safari pre-Yosemite update!
    Thank you!

Then there's no way to recover the lost data. You will lose every bit of data you have if you don't start backing up.

  • Moving Multiple IOS devices From Macbook Pro to iMac

I just bought a new iMac (switching from a PC ).  I was able to move all of my families music and movies for their iPod Nano's very easily.  I have an iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, two iPod Touches (1G and 4G) and a Shuffle that are currently in separate libraries on my Macbook Pro.  What is the easiest way to move all of these to the new iMac so I can start using the iMac to sync the devices without losing anything.  Is this a multi-step process to move each one individually?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks,
    Bruce

Hi, did you try booting the MBP into FireWire target disk mode...

Is the MBP running Migration Assistant?
Does the MBP have a TB port?

  • Firewire to migrate data from MacBook Pro to imac?

Would someone guide me as to what kind of firewire I need to buy to migrate data from my MacBook Pro (which is two years old, OS X 10.6.8) to an iMac (which is brand new, but also two years old, it's the older model with a 20" screen).  I've never even heard of firewire until I turned on the iMac for the first time, so would be very appreciative of guidance.  Thanks!

Note if any of the data came from a PowerPC Mac originally, read this tip first:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295
As that older data if it hasn't been through the Migration Assistant can give the Assistant a big headache.

  • Acrobat X Pro transfert from MacBook Pro to iMac

In January 2012 I bought Adobe Acrobat X Pro for Mac online.
I immediately downloaded and installed it on my 17" MacBook Pro (early 2009).
In December 2013 I bought an iMac and until recently I used concurrently both computers.
When I stopped using the two computers, I wanted to install Adobe Acrobat X Pro to the iMac (Yosemite) after uninstalling it from the MacBook Pro (Mavericks).
To this day I have not succeeded the reinstallation.
For this attempt to reinstall I used two methods:
    1) from the DVD copy I had engraved after downloading in 2012: I know that the software is on the hard drive of my iMac, it appears in the Applications folder and its icon appears in Launchpad;
    2) downloading from Adobe website to my iMac (Yosemite).
In both cases the result is the same when I click the icon or the app: a window opens asking me to enter the 24 digits serial number of my product; once it's done another window immediately appears stating, "The serial number you entered is valid, but no applicable products were detected on this computer". ...
Does it means I have to throw away a 3-year old product?

Thank you so much kglag for your help. It was the exact thing to do.
I had completely forgotten that I bought the complete version of Acrobat 9 Pro in 2009 and (two moves and an earthquake later) that my Acrobat 10 Pro was an update…
What a pity that Adobe does not mention this in the purchases page of my Adobe account.  I would have spare a lot of time and frustration.
    Thanks again!

  • Quickest way to transfer iMovie 09 Files from Macbook Pro to iMac

    Hello:
We recently got an iMac and I would like to transfer my iMovie 09 files from my macbook pro to the iMac which also has iMovie 09. Can you suggest the quickest and easiest way to do this? I am assumign this can be done since they are both iMovie 09-anyhelp is appreciated

    Huh.
Well, my approach has always been:
    1. Click the "Consolidate Media" menu in File, and click the buttons to move all source materials into the project.
    2. Shut down iMovie
    3. Navigate to Movies/iMovie Projects in Finder, and copy the corresponding project over to the other machine's Movies/iMovie Projects folder.
    4. Start up iMovie on the other machine.
I don't do much video (mostly photo slideshows) in iMovie, but this certainly hasn't caused me any problems before. iMovie just sees the new item in its iMovie Projects folder and allows you to select it.
