Iphoto08 Raw question

Hi all,
A quick question regarding RAW and jpg in iPhoto 08. In iPhoto5, when I imported RAW images, it would show both the RAW and JPG images. In 08, even though I have both a RAW and JPG version of the same image, cannot see both like in v5.
Does anyone know how I can enable the same functionality in 08,
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
When you import a RAW into iPhoto the app makes a JPEG preview of the pic. That’s what you see in the iPhoto Window.
If you’re shooting RAW+Jpeg then some folks using some cameras have reported issues with iPhoto importing.

  • Lightroom open in elements editor raw question.

I have just got lightroom 3.3 and it imports my .dng raw files no problem. if I use the save metadata  to file  and try to open in elements editor it open the file as a .tiff. instead of opening it as a raw file with ACR. I think the roblem is the metadata is not being stored in the same directory as the image file but I can't see where to check/change this. I assume that is what is causing this to happen.

Thank you for your reply, the question arises from watching this pod cast. I cannot get what is shown to work, please can you [if you have the time] look at it and let me know?

  • Aperture RAW questions

So, I just took a peek at my system and there is only 2GB of pictures and 150 of "other". I'm thinking that the "other" are my RAW files (since I only started shooting RAW on a regular basis 6 months ago). My macbook pro has been lagging a bit lately and I have a feeling these RAW files may have somehting to do with it.
My first question is where can I find these RAW files. I've seen it before, but forget how to navigate to it.
My second question is once I find these files, would it be safe to back them all up on an external, and then delete them from my macbooks' harddrive? Or is that just stupid?
    Thanks.

    1.  How big and how full is your system drive?  In Finder, select your drive and run "File→Get Info".  Capacity and Available space are listed in the "General" section at the top of the Info window.
    2.  How big is your Aperture Library?  In Finder, select your Library file and run "File→Get Info".  The size will be reported at the top right of the Info window.  You may have to wait a couple of minutes for Finder to calculate the size.
    3.  Are your Images' Masters Managed or Referenced (or a mix)?  Referenced Masters are badged (you can show Badges on any of the seven Metadata Overlays, as well as on the Metadata tab of the Inspector).  If any are Referenced, determine where they are stored, find them, and find out how much storage space they occupy.
In general you should keep at least 15% of your system drive free (empty) in order to not crimp your system's performance.  It is normal for Aperture users to run out of storage space on their system drives.  The common solution to convert some or all of your Images' Masters from Managed (= stored inside the Aperture Library) to Referenced (= stored outside the Aperture Library, usually on a different drive).  Aperture provides tools to move your Masters wherever you would like them.  NB:  Referenced Masters are not backed up by Aperture's Vault feature, and are not backed up automatically when you back up your Library.  Therefore you must add to your backup protocol something that includes backing up your Referenced Masters.
There are many many reasons for slowing performance.  Lack of free space on your system drive is a common one, but you should not rule out others without checking.  It is also advised to run Software Update to make sure your OS and other programs are completely up-to-date.
    Good Luck.

  • Fuji 6500 raw question

On another forum someone is claiming that the Fuji 6500 produces raw images that are affected by the sharpness settings in the camera. I don't know if this is true, but it leads to a hypothetical question. IF it is true, that means that the camera processor is altering the data, so does that have any impact on the actual raw image editing tolerance of the image?

Just guessing, but ACR has a minimum screen resolution to make sure you can get to all the buttons and things.  If you have a netbook or other small computer with less than 768 vertical pixels then you won't see the ACR UI and the photo will open immediately into Elements.  If there is a way to attach a larger external monitor then you can try that and see if a higher resolution works any different.

  • Adobe Bridge/Camera RAW Question

Hello. Can anyone tell me what the little gray circle icon with the two arrows in it is? This icon appears on RAW image thumbnails after opening a RAW file in Camera RAW via Adobe Bridge. When you mouseover it says nothing, when you click on it it does nothing. I am assuming its an indicator that the RAW file was opened but aside from that i can't figure out what it represents. Can anyone give some insight on this? Also, after opening and editing a RAW file how come the changes appear in the Bridge preview? Is there a way to return the preview image to its original state? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That is the Adobe character that says the original file has been edited. I forget what the character is called, but it is referenced in the Lightroom help file I believe.
You can delete the edits by clicking on edit/develop settings/clear settings.

  • Different RAW Question

    Hi Folks,
We run a birding website whereas photos are uploaded and also ranked. We have tight rules against manipulation, cloning, background change, etc, etc. But since there is an unofficial race among members, some people tend to "cheat" in order to get their photos liked more. When we suspect that a photo is manipulated, we ask them to send their original RAW files. If it was so obvious, they usually decline to send them in and come up with other excuses. But recently, we are seeing some "near impossible to get" photos and they come up with RAW files.
I'm no expert but is there any way to manipulate a RAW image, meaning that you open a RAW image, you do all kinds of stuff in PS and then save the image again in RAW and make it look like as it is original?
If this is possible in any way with PS or other photo processing software, can you tell if the RAW file is original or not?
    Thank You

Well, if you are a hacker skilled in the dark arts, maybe…but in general, raw files are read only. One CAN store the settings one used to adjust the raw file but one can also remove those setting to see what the raw file looks like. But one CAN'T easily take a raw file, open it in Photoshop, manipulate the image and then save it back out as a real raw file. Yes, one can save a TIFF file as a DNG file which mimicks a raw file but it's not a real raw file–one can detect the nature of the DNG.
Sorry, it seems what you are asking may simply be answered by the fact that people are getting real good at manipulating raw files with ACR & LR.
Personally, I think that arbitrary constraints being placed on what is a permit amount of image manipulation being "acceptable" as being specious…YMMV. Good luck on being the image police!

Hi I have a question about shooting in Raw with my Canon EOS 6d.
I'm in the process of learning photography and my goal was to start shooting in raw.
I have Photoshop CS5. When I tried to edit my images in raw I received an error message stating, "The photoshop camera raw plug-in did not recognize the format. If these files are from a camera, you may need to update your camera raw plug in."
In researching the issue I read that to edit in raw you need a camera model requirement of at least 7.3 which only works with CS6. My version of CS5 is 6.0.0.205. Being new to all this I see that my options are to upgrade to CS6 or convert by using DNG converter and paying a monthly fee. Two things I know nothing about and don't know which is would be more beneficial.
I'd appreciate any advise on which route to go and how upgrade and what it may cost. THANKS in advance!
    Heather

In researching the issue I read that to edit in raw you need a camera model requirement of at least 7.3 which only works with CS6.
That is correct. Your camera was first supported by Camera Raw 7.3. Camera Raw 7.3 will not work with CS5. You need CS6 or CC.
Being new to all this I see that my options are to upgrade to CS6 or convert by using DNG converter and paying a monthly fee. Two things I know nothing about and don't know which is would be more beneficial.
I'd appreciate any advise on which route to go and how upgrade and what it may cost.
It all depends on your preferred workflow and your budget.
Using the DNG converter is free. There is no monthly fee. You use the converter to convert all Raw files from the EOS 6D to DNGs then edit the DNGs in CS5. That's an extra step every time - every photo. Some people don't like the extra step. Others don't mind.
Camera raw, DNG | Adobe Photoshop CC
Or you can upgrade to CS6 (non-Cloud) and pay the upgrade fee
    Creative Suite 6
Or join the Cloud and pay the monthly fee
Or join the Photoshop Photography Program (US9.99/month) and get PS CC+LR

  • A Question about RAW and Previews

I have just recently starting shooting in RAW (mostly for the post production editing abilities - I am an avid amateur photographer bent on learning as much as I can). I set my camera to capture in RAW + L. I don't know why I feel like I want it to capture both the RAW and JPEG file, and thus leads me to my first question: Is it necessary to have the camera capture both the RAW and Large JPEG? I am assuming the answer to be no, as I am sure if after importing the RAW file into Aperture, you could always export a JPEG if you wanted one? So no need to fill up your internal memory (if using managed masters) with the extra JPEG? Is this thinking correct?
Next, if you do import RAW-only files and then want to export certain images, do you have a choice to export the original RAW image? It seems that it only allows you to export a JPEG Original Size. To answer my own question, perhaps you have to export the Master in order to export the full RAW file when exporting? If you want to export a JPEG, you have to export not the Master, but a version of the Master? Is this correct?
Lastly, I wanted to ask a question about Previews. I have my preferences set so that previews have the highest quality with no limits to size. What is the significance of setting it this way? I just assumed that if I wanted to share an image at the highest quality without exporting it, this was the way to go. Is there any validity to this? The reason I ask is that I don't want to have all of these high quality previews taking up internal disk space if I really don't need to. Is there a way to change the preview size once previews are created? Meaning, if you have it set to generate low quality previews, can you change it dynamically to high and vice versa?
I know this is a lot in one post. Thanks for tackling it.
    Mac

You can change the quality of the Previews in the Preferences -> Previews tab.
You can regenerate Previews with the Delete and Update Previews under the Images menu.

  • +++ Adobe Camera Raw - Frequently Asked Questions +++

Q: Is my camera supported by Adobe Camera Raw (ACR)?
A: Here is the list of cameras officially supported by the current version of Adobe Camera Raw and Digital Negative (DNG) converter. The page also provides links to the current version of ACR and DNG converter for both Mac and Windows.
Q: what version of Camera Raw should I install?
A: Photoshop CS6: see first question.
Photoshop CS5: Camera Raw 6.7 Win | Mac
Photoshop CS 4: Camera Raw 5.7 Win | Mac
Photoshop CS 3: Camera Raw 4.6 Win | Mac
Photoshop CS 2: Camera Raw 3.7 Win | Mac
Photoshop CS: Camera Raw 2.4 Win | Mac
    For Photoshop Elements, Windows:
Photoshop Elements 10: (See first question)
Photoshop Elements 9: Camera Raw 6.5
Photoshop Elements 8: Camera Raw 6.2
Photoshop Elements 7 and 6:  Camera Raw 5.6
Photoshop Elements 5: Camera Raw 4.6
Photoshop Elements 4: Camera Raw 3.7
Photoshop Elements 3: Camera Raw 3.6
    For Photoshop Elements, Macintosh:
Photoshop Elements 10: (See first question)
Photoshop Elements 9: Camera Raw 6.5
Photoshop Elements 8: Camera Raw 6.2
Photoshop Elements 6: Camera Raw 5.6
    Photoshop Elements 4.0.1: Camera Raw 4.6 ( 4.1 under Mac OS 10.3)
Photoshop Elements 3: Camera Raw 3.6
Q: What version of Camera Raw started to support my camera?
A: This page: http://www.adobe.com/go/kb407111 lists when support for the raw files of your camera was added in Camera Raw. If the version listed is higher than the one supported by your version of Camera Raw, you first need to convert the files to DNG using the latest version of the DNG converter in order to open them in Camera Raw.
Q: I do not have the latest version of Photoshop, how can I open the Raw files from my new camera?
A: Only the current version of Photoshop will receive ACR updates that add support for the latest cameras. However, you can download the latest version of the DNG converter, and use it to transform your raw files to the universal DNG format. Camera Raw 2.4 in Photoshop CS and all newer versions of Camera Raw compatible with your version of Photoshop will be able to open the DNG files. Photoshop 7 and ACR 1.0 do not support DNG, therefore you will need to upgrade to the latest version of Photoshop.
Q: When will the new update of Adobe Camera Raw be released?
A: Adobe cannot comment on unannounced products, however, it is expected that ACR and DNG converter will be simultaneously updated 3 or 4 times per year (i.e. every 3 or 4 months).
Q: What does "Unofficial Support" for a camera mean?
A: Unofficial support means that Adobe's Quality Engineering department has not tested the support to the degree that they want, and thus cannot guarantee the results. So we don't include the camera in our official lists, and don't provide any technical support. Unofficial support means "use at your own risk".
Q: How do I know that Adobe Camera Raw is installed correctly?
A: For Photoshop CS customers, the most efficient way to ensure that you have the latest Camera Raw update installed correctly is to choose the Updates option from the help menu. For Photoshop Elements customers the best way to verify that the Camera Raw plug-in is installed correctly is to make sure it appears (only once) in the "About Plug-in" menu (see: Photoshop menu on a Mac or Help menu on a PC). The correct version is displayed when you pick its name and see its about box. If "Camera Raw" is not in this list, you have not installed it correctly.
Q: Why is the profile listed in the Calibration tab showing a version of Adobe Camera Raw that's older than I am using ?
A: What you are seeing is normal, and is due to the fact that the built-in profile for your particular camera model hasn't changed between that version of Adobe Camera Raw and the version you're using now. If you see the profile listed as "beta" then your camera has only unofficial support.
Q: Why is there more than one profile listed in the Calibration tab of Adobe Camera Raw?
A: The built-in profile for your particular camera model has changed since it was first supported. The profile shown by default identifies the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw in which the profile was updated. Other profiles in the drop-down list identify those included with earlier versions of Adobe Camera Raw, and are available in case you want to maintain compatibility with earlier versions.
Q: My camera is listed, but Photoshop cannot read its raw files.
A: Download and install the most recent update to Adobe Camera Raw.
Q: Where can I download the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw?
A: Adobe Camera Raw for: Macintosh and Windows
Q: I am trying to replace my existing ACR plug-in with a more recent version, but cannot find ACR in my Photoshop/Plug-in/File Formats folder. Where is it located now?
A: As explained in the "Readme", which can be found on the ACR download page, the correct location is:
    Photoshop CS2
    Mac: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-ins/CS2/File Formats/
    Win: \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-ins\CS2\File Formats\
    Photoshop CS3
    Mac: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-ins/CS3/File Formats/
    Win: \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-ins\CS3\File Formats\
Note that "Common Files" is localized in non-english versions of Windows.
Q: Why do I only see a small generic icon in Adobe Bridge instead of a thumbnail when I browse the folder containing my RAW files?
A: Bridge occasionally has difficulty with RAW files, but this is usually because the user has installed ACR into the wrong location or browsed the folder prior to installing the ACR plug-in that provides support for their particular camera model. The fix for this issue is usually to make absolutely sure that ACR is installed correctly, then purge the Bridge cache. If you're in the habit of using the Distributed cache (Bridge 1.x) it would be prudent to manually delete the cache files from the folder containing your RAW files.
Q: Whenever I open an image in Adobe Camera Raw a small explanation mark within a yellow triangle appears in the upper right hand corner of the image.
A: This symbol indicates that a high quality preview is being generated by Adobe Camera Raw. It should disappear after a couple of seconds.
Q: How do I turn off Auto Adjustments in Adobe Camera Raw 3.x?
A: Open Adobe Camera Raw. On the Mac press Cmd+U or on the PC Ctrl+U. This keystroke combination toggles Auto Adjustments On and Off. Alternatively, disable the Auto Adjustments setting from the fly-out menu adjacent to the Setting drop-down menu. If you want the default to be Off for Auto Adjustments simply choose "Save New Camera Raw Default" from the fly-out menu adjacent to the "Settings" drop-down menu then choose Done.
Q: What about Adobe Camera Raw 3.7 and newer versions?
A: Camera Raw 3.7 no longer supports per slider auto adjustments. One Auto control at the top of the panel now sets the Exposure, Shadows, Brightness, and Contrast sliders to their auto values. The Default control at the top of the panel sets these same four sliders to their default values. The keyboard shortcut for the Auto control is CMD/CTRL-U.
The keyboard shortcut for the Default control is CMD/CTRL-R.
Double clicking on a slider to set that single slider to its default value.
Shift double clicking on a slider to set that single slider to its auto value.
Q: Why do I get the the following message: "Unable to create an .xmp sidecar file. The image settings will instead be stored in the Adobe Camera Raw database."
A: This message means that Adobe Camera Raw is unable to write to the XMP sidecar file. Either the media is read-only (e.g. a CD), or you don't have write access to the folder containing the image, or the existing XMP sidecar file is locked.
Q: I cannot see all the tools and buttons of Adobe Camera Raw.
A: Set your monitor resolution to the minimum required for Photoshop CS and higher, i.e. 1024x768.
Q: Where can I obtain a listing of Adobe Camera Raw keyboard shortcuts and modifiers?
A: On the Photoshop online help file.
Q: When I open my Nikon NEF files, all I see is the simple version of the raw dialog.
A: You are running Nikon's plug-in, not Adobe's. Delete from Photoshop's plug-in folder and all subfolders all copies of the "Nikon NEF plugin". Nikon automatically installs this plug-in in up to two places inside Photoshop's plug-in folder, and both must be deleted. Otherwise it overrides the Adobe plug-in. An alternative to the deletion is adding ~ in front of the Nikon plug-ins names.
Q: I installed the update. I can now open my raw files, but I still cannot see thumbnails in the file browser.
A: Purge the file browser cache for the problem folder. Tools > Cache > Purge cache for this folder.
Q: Is it better to resize my images in Camera Raw, or in Photoshop?
A: The resampling code is fairly similar to (but not exactly the same as) the "Bicubic Sharper" resampling in Photoshop CS and CS2. It does not make very much difference which stage you do the resampling in. The exception is non-square pixel cameras (Nikon D1x and Fuji S2 Pro), for which it is best to upsample one size step in Camera Raw if you need a larger image.
Q: What are raw images, and how do they differ from JPEG ones?
A: Read this whitepaper (1MB PDF) written by Bruce Fraser for a concise answer.

    You can check compatibility yourself:
    1.  Go to this page to see the different releases:  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/311515?tstart=0
    2.  Navigate into the download link for the appropriate version of Camera Raw.
    3.  Follow the link to the ReadMe (e.g., http://www.adobe.com/special/photoshop/camera_raw/Camera_Raw_4.6_ReadMe.pdf).
    4.  Look to see whether your camera is supported.
    5.  If your camera is NOT supported, you can use the free Adobe DNG converter to create .dng files that your Camera Raw will be able to open.
Photoshop CS6 is anticipated to be out in a few months, and Camera Raw is supposed to have a whole new approach, so a lot of us are excited about anticipating that.

    Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen!
My question concerns the impossibility to open RAW-files directly from the program Adobe Bridge. At the moment when you open a RAW-file from Adobe Bridge by double-clicking, RAW-file is opened only in Photoshop. In the settings Adobe Bridge - in "open RAW-files by double-clicking in Adobe Camera Raw» box is checked. When you try any changes in the settings Adobe Bridge system displays a message:
Bridge's parent application is not active. Bridge requires that a qualifying product has been launched at least once to enable this feature.
The entire line of Adobe products on my computer updated to the latest updates. Previously, a family of products Adobe Photoshop on your computer is not set. Computer - PC, Windows 7 Enterprises.

  • Camera Raw Plug-in Question

First off, please excuse me if this is a stupid question.  I'm still learning my way around CS5 and Lightroom so please bear with me.  So when selecting any of the "Edit-In" options in Lightroom (as in Panorama, HDR in Photoshop etc) I get an error message that reads as follows:
"This version of Lightroom may require the Photoshop Camera Raw Plug-In version 6.4.1 for full compatibility"
However, everything is updated for Lightroom and CS5.  My Camera Raw version is 6.4.1.145.  I wasn't getting the error message before so I'm not sure what changed (I hadn't even closed the program when I started receiving the error message).
Do I just un-install and reinstall the Camera Raw Plug-In to fix?  Any suggestions or insights?  I appreciate any help.  Thanks in advance!

  • Working with Raw Files: Workflow question

I am seriously a novice and need some advice. I have a Nikon D40x and I'm using Aperture software. I am shooting in raw (nef)+ jpg. I have uploaded the pics via aperture. When I import, a pop-up import menu says RAW + JPEG PAIRS: BOTH (JPG as master).
No problem here. Now I want to do some "fancy editing" but all I see is the jpg copy. How to I get to the raw (nef) file? And once I do and make changes, do I need to convert it to something else? HOW?
Any and all advice welcome! (Preferably in layman's terms, though. I'm already overwhelmed by all of the techie jargon).

    My advice:
Stop wasting your time doing jpg and nefs - just do nefs.
You also need to read the introduction to Aperture and possibly the Aperture manual if you want to get competent in the use of Aperture. Some of the principles and concepts need to be understood before you can use Aperture effectively - forget about "fancy" - you need "fundamentals" first. Might sound like I"m telling you to suck eggs, but this understanding is really important. Who knows - reading the manual might even answer the question you just asked...

  • Camera Raw 6.2 Questions

I am currently using PSE8 for Mac with ACR 5.7. I have a couple of questions:
    (1)  Other than support for several other cameras, what changes/additions are there in the ACR 6.2 update?
    (2) Have there been any glitches or incompatibility issues with updating to ACR 6.2 with PSE8?
    Thank you for your help.

Forgive me if I am being a bit dense. After downloading the update, I open the disk image on my desktop. I double-click the Camera Profiles.mpkg & follow the install instructions (as per Adobe's instructions). Next, from the downloaded disk image, I drag the new Camera Raw plug-in into Applications>PSE8>Plug-Ins>File Formats & replace the old Camera Raw plug-in. However, when I open ACR, version 5.7 opens.
    Thanks for your patience.
BTW, I did notice that, if I open PSE8 & click on the PSE pull-down menu>About Plug-Ins>Camera Raw, the plug-in is listed as 6.2. However, when I close out of this screen, PSE8 will unexpectedly crash. I don't know if this info might be of some help. Thanks again.
