IPhoto4 : no more picture files

Hi,
I have just updated from Panther to Tiger and it seems that in the process, all my pictures dated before 2006 have disappeared. I can still see them in iPhoto but they are nowhere to be found as individual documents.
I have tried exporting them from iPhoto but it says it is unable to do so.
How is that possible?
Thanks

but it says it is unable to do so
That doesn't sound like any warning dialog I've seen. Can you give a more precise wording of the iPhoto response to your export attempt?

  • Reducing a picture file to attach to an e-mail message on a new Z10

Hello out there, recently got a new Z 10,  love it by the way.   Does any one know how to reduce the picture files that you take with the Z10 to attach one or more to an email message.   There is no prompt in the sending process that warns you the files are to large and options to reduce the sizes.  I have tried all the visible edit icons that come up but none of them are associated with file reduction.
I would appreciate any knowledgable responce.
    Thanks,  Joseph
    Solved!

the picture editor in the z10 does a great job with cut, effects, sharpening etc.  but there is no re-size. There are a couple of free photo editors in the appworld that does this for you.

  • CS4 programme error trying to save picture files!

    Hi,
I have a frustrating error when trying to save some of my older picture files with CS4 Extended.  The ones that I am looking at are 5 years old and taken with my Canon 5D.  When I open a file and then try to save it the save option is grey and only save as is available.  When I try to save as I get the error Could not complete your request because of a programme error.
I have been trouble shooting the problem images and see that I cannot get File Info on these images with the following error, Could not complete the File Info command because of a problem with the File Info module.  When I look at some earlier D10 pictures they operate perfectly as do my more recent 5DMkII images.  I have tried removing the Exif data from the problem files and all the problems go away so I must be something to do with this embedded data.  The problem images don't have corrupt data... it is all there and looks correct.
I keep track of my photos with IDimager V4.
Does anyone have a explaination or a cure for this problem as the last thing I want to do is loose my File Info for all those old picture that I still need to work on and use.
    Many thanks,
    Nick

  • How to fix FO picture files created from interexchange

    Hi,
I am working on a catalog from a client. There are 645 picture links which were not sent with the job (3GB worth). I did the job in CS4 and saved as .inx so my client could open it in CS3. In CS3, all the picture files are gray boxes marked FO and all the links are missing from the link palette. Is there an easy fix for this?
    Thanks

Stephanie sent me the problem file last night and I've done a bit of playing.
It opened after around five minutes (maybe more) in CS3 with the expected missing links and missing fonts warnings and the gray boxes. Many of the gray frames have tags associated with them (FPO - which means "For Position Only" - on page 1) which are separate text frames added to tell whoever is working on the file that these are not the final images. That cleared up one qustion I had.
More importanly though, there were supposed to be 695 links. I looked in the links panel and all of the links were listed as foo.jpg, with a path of C:\foo.jpg, clearly not correct (I didn't count to see if there were 695). So I took a look at the .inx file as text.
.inx is basically XML, I think, but not really intended for human parsing. You can, however read it (and if you know what you're doing, which I don't, edit it) in a text editor, and it's pretty easy to recognize things like link paths. The correct paths seemed to be in place, so foo.jpg is clearly garbage and I have no idea where it came from.
I opened the same .inx in CS4. It opened more quickly, and showed the links as expected, just as Stephanie reported above, so I saved the file as a new .indd and then exportd a new .inx.
The new .inx was also slow to open in CS3, but this time the links were correctly imported and shown in the links panel, though of course they are still missing. This is the correct and expected behavior. My conclusion from this is that there is something odd about the first .inx file.
The first difference I noticed is that my file is smaller by about 100,000 bytes (both are over 17 MB). They are too large to do a complete comparison, but there are some differences in the beginnings of the files which I am not able to interpret, some differnces in swatch listings for Pantone spot colors which I would guess are a settings difference in Ink Manager for using LAB values for convrting spot to process.
I also noticed what appears to be some additional information included in the link listings of the first file which is not present in the second. I don't know how to read the tags or interpret the hex codes included, so I don't kow if this is significant, but I suspect that's the problem.
In any case, I'd like to know if Stepahnie did a plain Save or a Save AS before doing the initial export. My instinct is that a long series of regular saves left a lot of useless change information in the file that found its way into the .inx. Doing a Save As removes all of that garbage data from previous sessions and reduces the size of the .indd file and makes for cleaner export.
The bottom line, I think, is that the original .inx is defective, but that it could be regenerated successfully. If you have the time, can you do a Save As on the ID file, then make a new .inx and send that to me to see how it opens in CS3? I'm going to send you the one I made from the .inx you sent last night which appears to be usable, but it doesn't really solve the problem of WHY the first file was bad.

  • Question about pictures file in home folder

I am trying to create more space on my hard drive and have a question about the pictures file.
In addition to the iPhoto Library I have several folders named 1, 2, 3 etc each containing a bunch of photos; plus several hundred individual photo files.
My question is whether these files are duplicates of what is in the iPhoto Library - and is there an easy way to find that out?
And I guess also to find out how they got there in the first place. Could these be imports from disks as opposed to my digital camera?
    Thanks for any help,
    Laura

    Hey laura,
I haven't used iPhoto for a while but from memory i think that i work similar to iTunes. Whne files are processed by iPhoto they are catalogued on the hard drive according to the iPhoto preferences. I would check out the iPhoto preferences and see if you can see anything in here that will tell you what is going on.

  • How do I combine two or more pictures into one?

How do I combine two or more pictures into one?

I found out how to do what I wanted and I'm giving my steps in hopes that it might help someone else.  I wanted to put several photos from a file onto a new blank image.  This is what I did.
    1.  Create a blank page.    File/New/ Blank File.   Put in the size.  I used 8x10.
    2.  Bring the photo  you want to use into Elements as you always do. It will list along the top next to the blank sheet.
    3.  Choose SELECT (top of screen)/ Select All.
    4.  Choose Edit/Copy   or Command "C"
    5.  Click on the Blank File.   Chose Edit/Paste  or Command "V"
    6.  Click on Image/ Transform or Command "T".  There should be a dotted line around your pasted image.  You can then move and adjust the image to how you want it.  When finished, press the check-mark on lower right of photo.
    7.   Repeat this with all the photos you want on the new blank file.
    8.  You will see on lower right of Elements,  the background layer and as many layers as you have photos.  These layers need to be permanently placed on the background layer. Go to Layers and press Merge Visible.  This will merge all layers to the background.
    9.  Save as and you are done.

  • Want to import from pictures file and wont let me

I am so so frustrated. I have so many problems using imovie.
I have a mac book pro latest update and leopard.
I don't import my pictures into aperture or iphoto because I can't find the photos after wards. They are imbedded into the program. So I always download into Bridge. I love bridge and photoshop. I don't use aperture to edit. I want more control. So I go to use imovie and it wont let me import from my pictures file. So i finally break down and import into aperture and now all the pictures are split up into a file each. WHYWHYWHY.? Why would it put a picture in each file. I have the file and then 78 subfiles with 1 picture each!!!!! That is so irritating. I tried to download from a camera archive and it didn't work either. This is why i don't use imovie hardly ever. It is just too difficult to get the pictures inthere and if i do put them in i can't find them on the hard drive.

no, it is quite easy - you make it difficult.
and a Computer/program is much faster searching and finding files than you.
    I like the metaphor:
why naming the drawer, you put in files manually, instead of letting a machine find it for you? I can find a well-indexed/'tagged' pic-file much faster with iPhoto than any manual search ".. was it Sept/08 or Oct/08? Was it 'Vacations/Summers/Islands/Trees' or 'Backgrounds/Nature/Woods/' .. ? • IWeb Podcast - Drag and Drop Audio and Picture Files

I have been using iWeb the last few days to create a web site that includes some podcasts. I currently have three podcasts as a part of the site. I have been able to get two of the podcasts to work correctly but the third one, no matter how many times I recreate it seems to be where the difficulty lies.
The podcast page gives me the opportunity to drag and drop an audio file and a picture file onto the page. As best I can tell, when I drop the audio file onto the page, things seem to be fine. When I drop the picture file onto the object, the audio clip seems to disappear. I have tried dropping the picture file first with basically the same results.
A couple of more things. I created the original podcast file in GB3. I have found I can't import the podcasting file directly form GB because I end up with a very large file (>60GB) for the audio portion. So, I share the audio file to disk as an M4a file. When I add the audio to the podcast page in iWeb, I drag the audio file from Finder onto the object. The picture I have dropped onto the podcast page both from the Media Browser and from Finder. The results are the same.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Dave

I think you're asking the question in the wrong forum. From what you posted, there's nothing wrong with GB, you should post in the iWeb forum where you're more likely to get useful and accurate answers about, well, iWeb.

  • Relinked picture files not updating

    Hi all,
To begin with, I am using final cut pro 10.0.8 on mountain lion 10.8.4.
The problem I'm having is that my media files are not updating in final cut pro x once they have been changed outside final cut pro. I'll explain what I'm doing:
    1. I have imported some png files into my events and chose not to copy to my events folder. These picture files are used extensively in my project.
    2. I have found that I need to make some changes to the png files. After making the changes in photoshop (the original file is psd and I save to png), final cut pro does not automatically update the new details even though when I click the event and choose reveal in finder, it takes me to the newly saved file that does have the changes. The file name and location did not change.
    3. I then tried to manually relink the files, but it still does not update the new changes. What is interesting is that the info on the picture still refers back to the orginal details when the file was created. Again if I choose reveal in finder, it highlights the newly saved png.
    4. I then decided to delete the original png file and empty the trash can. Final cut shows that the media is missing. I saved the png from photoshop again and final cut pro automatically relinked the file, but it is still the old image!
    5. As a last resort, I trashed the original image again, resaved the png with a different name, relinked again. This time final cut updates the date it was created, but the image is still the old image!
No matter what I try to do, I can't get final cut pro to update the image. I dropped the png into the timeline and did and export hoping it was just displying the original image but would use the new image when it renders. Unfortunately, the movie it created had the old image still.
Obviously the image the event is pointing to is not the one it is using because I have double checked that the file saved has been updated outside of final cut.  Is there something I am doing wrong? Or is there a bug with final cut pro? I'm suspecting it is using a chached file somewhere.
    Thanks for your help,
    Adrian

Tom, I followed your suggestion and final cut updated the png in the event viewer the first time, but refused to update any further changes I made. So I deleted the entire event, created a new one, and imported a new picture with different name, and could not get it to update again.
What is crazy is when I right-click on it in the event viewer and choose Reveal in Finder, finder shows the updates I made.
Now obviously this would not be suitable in my case, as I can't edit the png file since it has been flattened. I need to work on the photoshop file and then save over th png file. Surely I should be able to save over my png file (when I save as from photoshop) and final cut should see the changes.
Rgarding your question, the pictures I have are different angles of an office scene which will be my background for me green screen shots. I had to tweek a few parts of it and only then found that final cut didn't want to update them. Now that I have this problem, I don't want to continue any further until this is sorted out incase I have to make more changes.
I've only had this new computer for 8 days, so final cut has not been installed for long. But since no one else is having this proble, I'll trash final cut and download it again. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

  • PICTURE FILES gobble up backup drive?

My photos are all imported--I do not own a camera. There are just too many copies
of the same old, same old! I want to make DVD 's of some important backups on the
TM amd DELETE all of the PICTURE BACKUPS on the TM. Then I intend to backup the
Picture files as needed manually on DVD's. My reason for this is that I need all
my backup drive space for my creative work.
So, I need to know how to make DVD copies from the TM, and how to
delete all the photo fles on the TM. Since I want to delete everthing on
that subject, how will it hurt the TM? Please, some of you smart techies
    helpme. Thanks.

    Golden-age girl wrote:
    Dear Pandini,
The important thing I need to know before moving all Picture files to DVDs is: Can I open up Picture files again on my computer when more photos come in to me, or does this happen automatically?
I don't know just what you mean. If you copy a group of photos to a folder, then burn it to a DVD, then yes, you can open them when you read the disk. It's not automatic, and they won't go back into iPhoto unless you import them from the DVD into iPhoto.
But experiment with this before you start deleting photos; make sure you know how to do it, and how to get them back if/when you want to.
In the future if too many photos amass again, and just move them to DVDs again?
Yes, you can always copy things to a folder and burn it to a DVD.
Thanks for all your help. iPhoto has been my Jonah from the start, and in the future when I don't have so much to do with a manuscript, I willl consider the Workshop in iPhoto at the Apple store.
But before we part, I need to tell you about a message from TM again: "Backup disk is full, TM will delete old backups to make room for new ones." THEN IT OFFERRED ME PREFERENCES AS A CHOICE.
What it was offering was the option to +automatically delete+ your oldest backups when it needs room for new ones, by un-checking the +Warn when old backups are deleted+ box; and/or for you to exclude things from backups.
I selected Preferences so I could save some space by deleting Hourlly & Daily backups for the time being.
Time Machine does that on every backup. It's not an option. And it's not a problem, unless you've been deleting things you need from your internal HD.
It sounds more like you went into Time Machine's "Star Wars" display to delete individual backups, per #12 in the FAQ Tip.
How can I remedy all this?
There's no "magic wand" to wave and have your Mac do whatever it is that you want. I'm still not sure exactly what you want, or what's going on. But as long as you keep adding photos to your system, your system, and backups will get larger.
I am so pre-occupied with the manuscript I have to finish & get published that I needed this relief before I could prepare & create the DVDs.
Again, you need to either stop adding stuff to your system, figure out how to deal with it, or get a new, larger drive for Time Machine. Sorry, but those are your choices.
If you're still confused, make an appointment at your local Apple Store, either with a Genius who can help you with this, or for the workshop.

    Hi,
According to the following, the Sony Alpha A6000 requires camera raw 8.4 which is not compatible with Photoshop Elemenets 11.

Providing your system is not XP, Vista or Mac OS 10.6 or earlier, then you need to upgrade to Photoshop Elements 12 or 13 or use the DNG converter 8.4 or later.

  • Link missing from iPhoto Library to picture files

In iPhoto '08 when pointing to a picture and using drop down box to "show original file" it shows the linkage/ file tree diagram from picture to next level up subdirectory to Original to iPhoto Library to Pictures. Yet when looking for my picture files from Finder to User to Pictures to iPhoto Library there is no linkage to the Original subdirectory. NB there is no arrow under the iPhoto Library indicating a subdirectory. All that shows is a Preview column showing size of the pictures in the file but no file. How can this be fixed so I can find pcitures from Finders approach.

Thanks. First of all, I really appreciate the time you are taking to try and help me.
To begin, attaching pictures for emailing purposes wasn't the main problem for me, because I am using Mail to read my Yahoo mail, and have been using the email button in the iPhoto app.
My frustrations were when I was on a site, such as Shutterfly, snapfish, and I was choosing the pictures that I wanted to upload. I have thousands of pictures and because I don't keyword or rename them, I was used to being able to find the pictures I wanted by the visual in file system. Based on the folder names. I guess I am confused, because when I click the browse button, I am presented with what looks like a finder window. So, maybe my question is how to view the picture files via the finder. I was referring to your suggestion:
"Also, for 10.5 users: If you use the extended Open or Attach dialogue (with Column View) you can scroll to the bottom of the Shortcuts and find the Media browser there. Select any pic you want from there."
When I do the above, I still keep just launching the app. not seeing the files that are hidden within.
I did follow your instuctions below, but was unable to attach. Only when I dragged the photo to Safari on the dashboard, did it open in a separate Safari browser. It did not link or merge with the attach window.
Open Safari and go to attach a pic to an Email. The attach window descends in Safari
Now, pop back to the iPhoto Window and drag the pic from the iPhoto Window to the attach window
    Does that work?
If it does, you can then try replacing the iPhoto Window and use the Media Browser window, but remember you're dragging from the browser to the Safari window, not trying to find a file via the Attach window.
Yes but iPhoto is nothing like Windows Explorer. If you want to mimic that format you would use the Finder, not iPhoto. iPhoto is a database application, a photo organiser, not the main Computer filing system.
I guess this is more what I would appreciate help with. Although, I think I need to spend a little more time in iPhoto creating Albums, versus the Events that all of my pictures have be organized in by default.
I think you might have misunderstood my comment below...I just want to be able to find the photo files with a visual not just the file name. Because I have no other way to find them in a browse situation.
Of course, you'll be able to do the same. But why you would want to work via "little thumbnails" when you can do so in more comfort via the Media Browser or the iPhoto Window I don't know.
I was formerly using Picasa on my Windows computer, which is a really easy app. and when I created a new album, it was very easy to find in the Windows Explorer when browsing for an upload. Obviously I need a little more time with the iPhoto, but I have been trying to do this for about 2 months when I got the computer, with what I thought was pretty decent common computer knowledge, but feel totally lost. I guess I feel a little bummed that I made a switch to Mac based on the concept that it was simpler, but it has proven to be much for difficult to do the very basic things I use my computer for everyday.
You've changed Computer, Operating System and now you've made an enormous change from using the File System to organise your pics to using a Photo Organiser. There's going to be change involved, and some learning to be done.
Thank you again for your time.

  • Pictures - File Names

This might be a weird question, but it's bugging me so here it goes.
When I use to import my pictures on my windows (winblows) computer I would go and change all the file names of each picture imported. Since I have gotten my Mac I have been using iPhoto. Do people that use iPhoto just ignore the actual picture file? Do you just keep the file name that iPhoto creates when it imports the pictures? Or is there a way to tell iPhoto what to name the photo's file names?
Here is what I do every time I import from my camera:
I import the pictures; then I go into the iPhoto picture folder and rename them, then transfer the picture files into my own folder; then I delete the files from the iPhoto folder. I then delete the pictures from iPhoto; empty the trash (iPhoto trash); then I import the pictures back from the folder that I like to keep them in. (Is that confusing)
Am I doing a whole bunch of unnecessary stuff here? Am I the only one that likes to have control over the actual files? Should I just let iPhoto do it all for me?

I also tell iPhoto to not add the pictures to the iPhoto library, is that okay?
    Not really
It is ok but means that you have total responsibility for managing your originals INCLUDING NEVER changing the path to them (New HD, new computer etc) and that you never make a mistake and delete an original that has not been deleted first in iPhoto - in short, it is a recipe for problems and most people who have tried it are sorry they have
Also if I edit a picture, does it save it as one picture? Or does it keep two copies of the picture file?
iPhoto always keeps the original and a thumbnail plus if you make any modifications the latest modified version - if you let iPhoto copy the photos to its library you have non destructive editing so you are never more than one step from the original - not so (I hear) if you use a referenced library
How do I know if there is an original picture and an edited picture?
By reading and knowing how iPhoto works - just like how you know anything else in life - You can see them (if you are suing a managed library) in the iPhoto Library - DO NOT CHANGE OR MOVE ANYTHING - in the originals folder, the modified folder and the data folder (thumbnails)
