IPhoto4 quit importing photos - but from one user only ??

Hi, Sorry for the long post but it may save several reply/post exchanges.
iPhoto4.0.3 just decided to no longer import photos from a Canon Digital IXUS V3 - but only for one (managed) user. It still works perfectly for the other (admin) user.
As an administrator, I have tried - on the managed account -(but perhaps not in the correct order!) the following potential solutions learnt from this Forum (mostly thanks to Brie Fly and others helping other folks, ta!):
1. Selecting all items in the /System/Library/Image Capture/Devices/ folder
2. Dragging to the trash the file com.apple.iPhoto.plist (located in User's Library/Preferences folder) and then letting the system regenerate it
3. Using Disk Utilities to Repair Disk Permissions on the HD
4. Holding down Shift+Option while opening iPhoto4 to get it to rebuild the iPhoto Library (which it successfully did by producing iPhoto Library-1, so there are now two sets - the original file and the -1 file)
5. Checking that in Image Capture, the option to start iPhoto is checked when a camera is detected
Unfortunately none of this worked for the managed user account, while there had been no problem until now. Of course, I do not know what might have changed to trigger this halt to importing.
What happens on the managed user account is that the camera is plugged into USB, switched on and then iPhoto4 starts up (saying 'loading photos') - so far OK! But then when I try to import, there is no camera recognized. Trying to use the Image Capture application gives a similar non-recognition outcome. When the start-up option is changed from 'start iPhoto' to 'Image Capture' then instead of iPhoto, Image Capture starts up at camera switch-on but there is again no camera recognition. Trying 'Browse Devises' there does not work, either.
Exactly the same camera, cable, battery, etc. combination still works without any problems on the admin account: both iPhoto (if set for start-up) or Image Capture start up correctly, recognize the camera and can import photos from it.
As usual, the camera card was formatted immediately prior to this set of photos having been recorded on it.
Interesting... All suggestions extremely welcome! And special thanks to all who volunteer their time by sharing valuable expertise and experience. Cheers!

Hi and Thanks to all who helped!
PhillyPhan - as one engineer to another - I am an inveterate grammar fanatic also! (What is it with engineers, maybe we're trained to attempt to eliminate all possible errors?!)
Creating a new non-admin user was the key as it gave a possibility for comparison of all details - because the new user account happily imported into iphoto4 from the camera immediately.
The secret was (after much checking of details in each non-admin user's preferences, etc.) that the new user account showed as 'standard' while the problematic one was 'managed'.
Apparently, 'standard' means a non-admin user (without any restrictions) while 'managed' means a non-admin user with some restrictions (set by the 'admin' user under the Parental Controls tab to apply to the 'managed' user).
Simply removing the Parental Controls from the 'managed' user account - thus making it into a 'standard' user account - solved the importing problem immediately.
There must have been some obscure restriction(s) imposed onto iphoto under the 'managed' settings (even though I had tried to make available all options that I could find). I had set up the 'managed' status a long time ago (much prior to the importing problem arising) in an attempt to cure an earlier unrelated application access problem.
All is well now and I really appreciate all the help (also gleaned from earlier posts by others). Cheers!

  • How do I export photo's from one user acct. to another user acct

Trying to export photo's from one user acct. to another user acct. on same computer into second users Iphoto app.

File -> Export to the destop. Drag to Users/Shared Folder and then import from other account.
    Or use iPhoto Sharing:
For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • Importing itunes songs from one user to another on same mac

This is probably a simple one. My son has bought an album from the itunes store and I want to import it into my itunes library on the same mac (not that I can stand most of the stuff he listens to!). I assume I can do that, but when I go to import files and go to his music folder on the mac HD there is a no entry icon on it and I can't access it....
    Thanks!

His Music folder permissions by default prevent others from opening it.
You could manually copy (not move, copy) the album of interest to a location such as the Shared Folder where you would have read privileges. Then you could import it into your iTunes Library.
However if the music is DRM protected you will still not be able to play it.
Another method would be to burn an Audio CD of the album and import that into your library.

  • How to import a mailbox from one user to another?

    Hi,
This is my situation on a work computer.
User 1 has a mailbox with work emails on it.
User 1 has just left the company.
I have created a user 2 for the new employee.
I want to import the User 1 emails over to user 2 so that user 2 can carry on with user 1's work and still have all the emails user 1 sent and received.
When I use the import mail function of mail I cannot import another users mail.
How can I do this? Surely this isn't an unusual situation?
Can anyone help? We are on pop 3

Assuming you can either login to the computer as user1, or as the admin on that computer, try copying the entire /Users/user1/Library/Mail folder to a USB flash drive, then login as user2, launch Mail and in Mail's menubar, go to File > Import Mailbox and follow the directions to navigate to the desired mail account data stored on the USB flash drive.

Download/install an app is a know possible solution.
    3. Install another app from the App Store
If all user-installed apps are not launching, it could be an Apple ID authorization issue. Download and install an app that isn't already installed on your device to reset this information.

What DB version do you use?
I don't know if dbms_metadata is present on oracle 9i but I'm quite sure that to_char(CLOB) is supported only on 10g, so you should find onother way to get the clob.
You could also determine the extract ddl script with this script that runs on older versions as well:

  • Move photos from one user to another on same computer

How do I MOVE pictures that I have created on one user to the new user?
I don't wish to keep the photos on the other user as I feel it would use up too much room on the Imac...

    Does this involve iPhoto somehow?
Assuming it does: export from iPhoto in Accoint A; put the files in the Users/Shared folder. Switch to Account B. Import the files from the Users/Shared Folder.
Then delete the files from Users/ Shared and back to Account A and delete them from iPhoto there.

  • Problems importing mail from one user to another on same computer

    Hi,
I work from home so I created a new account on my computer so I could have a personal user and a business user. That way maybe I won't always end up working when I'm trying to relax. So I want to bring all my old work emails over the the new work account. But when I copy the mail files to the new user account and then try to import, the folders all have red circles with minus signs. I gather that this has something to do with permissions, but when I change the owner to the new user, they still have the red circles. I also tried just moving the whole mail folder over to the new user, but it's "read only".
Both users are administrators. I'm running OS 10.4.4.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

    Hi Andrew.
What you tried to transfer the Mail folder from one user to the other should have worked, except I believe you didn't properly change ownership of the files and folders involved.
    7. open new user Mail
    8. Mail asks me to set up an email account
This probably happened because you didn't change ownership of the com.apple.mail.plist file. If Mail doesn't have access permission to write to that file, it just deletes the file and creates a new one (Mail can delete the file because doing that requires write permissions for the directory the file is in, which it has). As a result of re-creating the preferences file, Mail asks you to set up your accounts from scratch all over again.
    14. change the ownership of the mail folder to the
new user, but I still can't look inside the folder
and it has the red circle with the minus sign.
It looks like you tried changing ownership of the enclosing Mail folder only. Ownership of all the items within it must be changed as well. Unfortunately, there is no way to do this properly in the Finder, as the Apply to enclosed items button in the Get Info window also overwrites access permissions, not just the changes you make to ownership. Usually, this is wrong, as a different set of permissions may be appropriate for each item. In the particular case of the Mail folder, however, you can come close to doing the right thing as follows:
    1. In the Finder, go to HOME/Library/. Locate the Mail folder, select it and choose File > Get Info (⌘I). Under Ownership & Permissions, expand Details by clicking on it.
    2. Change the settings as follows (you may need to click on the lock icon to authenticate first). Owner: username, with "Read & "Write" access permissions; Group: username, with "Read only" access permissions; Others: "No Access".
    3. Click on the Apply to enclosed items button at the bottom of the Get Info window.
    4. Change Group access back to "No Access", which probably was (or should be) the initial setting when you opened the Info window.
    5. Close the Get Info window.
The right way to (recursively) change ownership of the Mail folder without altering access permissions would be issuing the following command in Terminal:
    sudo chown -R username:username ~/Library/Mail
And while you're at it, you may as well use Terminal to change ownership of the preferences file:
    sudo chown username:username ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist

  • I can't import a table contains BLOB column  from one user to another user.

    grant connect to d2zd;
    create user d3zd identified by d3zd default tablespace d3zd quota unlimited on d3zd account unlock;
    grant connect to d3zd;
2)Then enter oracle as d2zd and create a table contains BLOB column and insert data to the table.
    3) export d2zd as follow:
    exp d2zd/d2zd file=d2zd.dmp
    4) import to d3zd as follow:
    imp d3zd/d3zd fromuser=d2zd touser=d3zd file=d2zd.dmp
the question is the table with BOLB colum can't be import,
it says:have no privilege on tablespace d2zd.
How can I import a table contains BLOB column from one user to another user?

Hi - the reason for as our friend already told ist that a blob can be stored outside of the table segment, in another Tablespace, This is for performance reason.
Sou you would need to have Quota on two tablespaces.
the one which holds the table segment the other which holds the blob(segment).

I have recently transferred data from my old Mac to my new one. The result was good, but I have 2 users now, whose data I want to merge into 1 single user, so to avoid having to switch from one user to the other to view and use certain files. How to do it?

    Here's an easy way:
Pick the user that you want to eliminate (making sure that the remaining user has administrator privileges) and move all of the data that you want to keep into the Shared folder. Reboot or log out and login to the user you want to keep. Copy all the data from the Shared folder into your account - placing it neatly in folders (Documents, Music, Movies, etc.).
Once the data is moved, log into the account you want to delete just once more to make certain that you've grabbed all the data you want to keep. Log out and log back into your admin account and go to System Preferences>Users & Groups and delete the 'old' user.
    That should do it.

  • Transfer music from one user account to another on the SAME mac?

My family (wife, son, daughter, and me) share an imac but we all have our own user accounts. Our entire itunes music library is in one user account and is getting to the point of being unmanageable.
Can I move some of my itunes library (e.g., my son's music) to another user account on the same iMac? Some songs were imported from CD and others were purchased from my Apple ID number.
It's my understanding that an ipod can only be synced with one itunes library at a time, but I thought Apple also restricted the usage of music bought from itunes to a finite number of computers. If this is true, I think I would be able to transfer a group of songs from one user account to another so long as the user accounts were on the same computer.
I was told that I could just drag the songs into a shared folder and then log into his account and drop them in iTunes.
    Some specific questions:
    1) Can I move all music files (CD and purchased) to the shared folder for dropping into his account?
2)The purchased ones were purchased under MY apple ID which I do not want to give him access to. Should I create one for him or just have him use mine and wait for my password. I would like to put an allowance on his new ID number and keep it separate from mine. Would that make a difference in the future if I wanted to use one of his songs on my iPod or in an iMovie project?
I just reinstalled my Lepoard OS X and put all my data back. I did not deauthorize anything before I did this. Did I need to? Or is even a clean install on the SAME machine ok and seen as the same authorization?
    Thanks in advance!!

You can give him copies of song files, either by using a shared folder, or by putting the copies on a USB flash drive from which he can copy them to his own iTunes library.
Any DRM-protected tracks that you have purchased from Apple can only be played if the user has authorization to the account(s) from which the tracks were purchased. Authorization requires physical access to the computer and knowledge of the password, and you can figure it from there!

  • How do I move imove content from one user to another on the same computer?

We bought our Macbook pro about six months ago. We made the mistake of creating two users for it (my husband and myslef) but bow we only log in under my user name. The problem is we originally imported all of our video camera content to his "log in" and now it is in his imovie folder, and not mine. I want to make a movie on my log in with the fottage that we imported to his. So, how do I get video content from one users login on the SAME computer to the other log in users? I cannot seem to move it for the life of me. I did not expect this to be so difficult.

    Hi,
You need to log into his account and look, under the Movies folder, for iMovie Events. Inside, you'll find folders with the events names and still further will be the movie itself. Copy each to an external media or use the Shared folder so both accounts can reference them.
Another option would be to attach an external HD and via iMovie (Events Library pane) move them to the new disk. You would preserve the thumbnails and analysis already performed on the videos.
    Good luck!

Using Lion, I had to "re-migrate" my photo folder from my old MacBook Pro to my new MacBook Pro, but it required me to set up a new user on the new computer.  Now I need to get the photo folder from user2 folder to user1.  How does one do that efficiently?

  • Import local mailboxes from one account to other in the some computer

I need to import local mailboxes from one account to other in the some computer. I have tried copy/paste from one user/library to other, but mail went crazy with permission and even if I changed them manually now Mail can't save the passwords of the mailboxes, so I need enter each time Mail check the mail from the server. Any idea?

You need to let Mail do the Import, and not do this manually in the Finder.  However, if you force a reindexing things may get back to normal.  This assumes you are not talking about mailboxes in account folder, but rather On My Mailboxes?
To reindex all mailboxes force a reindexing by deleting the Envelope Index. With IMAP or Exchange account, forcing reindexing requires removing the account folder. See:

  • How to copy discoverer workbooks from one user to another user

I need to be able to copy all workbooks from one user and save them in a shareable user account. The request is being made by his manager (in preparation for the user's retirement) so I need to do it without the user's knowledge. The manager wants to ensure that all workbooks are copied. For example, can the DBA copy all workbooks of schema JOHNDOE to APPLEX. We are using  Oracle Database 10.2.0.5.0 and Discoverer 10.1.2.3 in the Windows environment.
    Robert

    Robert
Are these workbooks saved in the database or on a file server somewhere? If its the latter you just need to copy them to another location.
If they are saved to the database you can export them using the Admin tool but I have a feeling you will only be able to do this if you have access to them: aka they have been shared with you. So here's several ideas:
    1. Grant JOHNDOE and APPLEX access to be an administrator then log on as JOHNDOE in the Admin tool and use File | Export | Selected Objects | Workbooks and export ALL workbooks owned by JOHNDOE. Then you log in as APPLEX and import the workbooks this time taking ownership. Now you can share them with whoever else needs them. You will need to make sure that APPLEX has access to the same business areas as JOHNDOE. When done you can revoke the admin rights of JOHNDOE.
    2. If you don't know JOHNDOE's password you could export the entire EUL to a file. For example if you EUL is owned by a user called EUL_US then create another database user called EUL_US_TEMP and install an empty EUL as a Private EUL, not Public. Then you grant APPLEX permission to be an administrator of this new EUL. Next you log in as APPLEX in the new EUL and import the EUL you exported earlier, this time also taking ownership of all workbooks only if the original owner cannot be found. You'll find that APPLEX has access to ALL workbooks not just those originally owned by JOHNDOE so next you have to work out which ones were originally owned by JOHNDOE. You can do this in SQL by examining the file called EUL5_DOCUMENTS in the original EUL and look for all documents owned by JOHNDOE. Now that you know the names of the documents you log back into the new EUL as APPLEX and export only the workbooks you want to a separate export file. With that done you can log in as APPLEX into the original EUL and import that file this time always taking ownership. Finally you can drop the EUL_US_TEMP schema.
    Hope this helps
