Iphotos Package Contents: What are all these folders for? Is it too large to back up in the cloud?

Dear experts,  I am quite a newbie when it comes to understanding the Mac filing system, as I originally came from the PC world.  There's lots of things I dont understand in the iMac file viewer and how to organise and backup my photos is an important issue for me.
I know that if I want to look at the original photo files on my iMac, I can right-click on users/myname/pictures and select "Show Package Contents".
Question 1 - What are all these folders for?
Please can someone explain what is the difference between all the folders I see?  Some of them seem to be exact duplicates of the others e.g. Masters, Modified and Originals all seem to have the same content.  So here is a list of folders that I see.  What is in them?, or what is their purpose?
Data
Data.noindex
Modified
Originals
Apple TV Photo Cache
Attachments
Auto Import
Backup
Caches
Contents
Database
iLifeShared
iPod Photo Cache
Masters
Previews
ProjectCache
Thumbnails
Question 2 - Which photo folder should I back-up?
If I want to keep a physical backup of my photos, which of the above folders should I copy to an external hard drive?  (I use Get Backup to automatically  copy all important new or changed files to an external drive)
Question 3 - Using the cloud: What is the best way to backup my large photo library in the cloud safely?
I would like to have some kind of safe backup in the cloud for my photos.  However the size of the iphoto library is huge at 165GB.  Even the Masters folder is huge.  It is 130GB.  Is it possible to back up files of this size in the cloud?  I have a couple of services called photo streaming and Dropbox, but they don't seem to be able to handle this kind of size.  Photo streaming only works with 1000 photos (as far as I can tell), and my Dropbox probably has a limit too.  I guess it's about 5GB.  I am already using about 3GB of my Dropbox space for other files.  I would consider both paid and free solutions.
Many thanks to all the experts for your help!

know that if I want to look at the original photo files on my iMac, I can right-click on users/myname/pictures and select "Show Package Contents".
Don't do that. That's like opening the hood of your car and trying to figure out what all the different bits and peices are and which you can yank out and dispose of. Simply, there are no user-serviceable parts in here.
So, your Question 2:
You back up the iPhoto Library as a single unit.
Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
Your question 3:
There is no good back up to the Cloud. There are a couple of reasons for this. One is that the datasets are so large and the cloud services shapre their download speeds. This means restoring can take days to complete. Then, and this is the big problem, the iPhoto Library needs to sit on a disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Bluntly, no servers online are formatted appropriately, and if the Library is written to - by an incremental back up, for instance - there is a very high likelihood that the library will be corrupted.
Your Question 1:
The Library you're describing there sounds like one that has been updated a few times. Not everything you list there is a folder. Some will be aliases.
The Data folders hold thumbnails.
The Masters and Originals folders hold the files as imported from the camera
The Previews hold the versions of the edited photos that are accessed via the Sharing mechanism.
I think if you look losely that you'll notice that one of the Data folders and one of either the Masters or the Originals folders is actually an alias.
Everything else is a database or cache file of some form. All are required for iPhoto to work.

  • What are all these strange .plist's I'm seeing?

Just took a look in my HD > USER > LIBRARY > PREFERENCES FOLDER ... and I see a lot of strange "repetitive" plists.
These are SOME of the strange listings:
... and this kind of "duplicate" .plist occurs with many other preferences in the "Preference Folder" as well.
Some are fine, others have one or more duplicates with strange numbers and characters after them.
I can see that the top .plist icons are using the "textwrangler" icon, and that all others that follow, don't have the "textwrangler" icon ... but are instead  "blank" white page icon.
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT"S GOING ON HERE ... and why ALL these "duplicate" .plists are being created
AND HOW TO FIX THIS ISSUE?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I know this is not normal OSX behavior

This is the basic explanation for these "strange .plists:
(Read the CNET link in the above discussion window above)
    Temporary plist files
Part of the way the system manages preferences files is a protection method for preventing corruption from happening if an error occurs when the system is writing preference files. For instance, if you are saving settings for a program and the system suddenly loses power, then the preferences file being written to may get corrupted and won't open properly when the system is restarted, which would result in all your settings being lost. To combat this, the system creates a temporary file to save the new settings, and when the file is properly saved, it then replaces the old file with the new one.
In OS X 10.6 or earlier, if you look in the preferences folder you may see a number of property list files with a string of eight characters after their names, such as the following:
    com.apple.iTunes.plist
    com.apple.iTunes.plist.3847EH45
    com.apple.iTunes.plist.2GDH17DJ
    com.apple.iTunes.plist.37D6JH25
    ...etc.
All of the files with eight-character strings appended to their names will be 0KB in size, and are the temporary files that were used for a specific preference saving instance. The temporary file should be deleted automatically, but sometimes odd problems may result in them sticking around. The accumulation of these temporary preference files may have been corrected in Lion, but if you are running Snow Leopard or Leopard, then you will likely see them appear after a while of using your system. You can safely remove them from your system if they begin to accumulate over time.

  • Activity monitor - what are all these processes and how do i stop them?

    hi.
i have a laptop that i use completely for live music performance and i want to disable everything on the mac that could be taking up RAM and CPU power.
i firstly notice airport base station agent and spotlight. can i disable these?
i also notice itunes helper... whats that?
i also have lots of others such as - ATSServer, launchd, loginwindow, mdworker, pboard, syncserver, systemUIServer and UserEventAgent... what are these and do i need them running?
    many thanks....

    hi.
thanks for coming back with an answer so quickly.
in activity monitor i can see spotlight is taking up about 25mb.
i have a 6GB music session to run with a huge CPU load so every bit of my 4GB RAM is taken up.
i do use spotlight a lot but could do without if it meant freeing up a little bit of space... it all helps!
i can see no page outs and it says 0 bytes but even though im running nothing on my computer i only have 3.3GB of my 4 available. 260MB is active and 420MB is wired.
im sure ableton live (my live music app) would appreciate even a little bit more RAM...
i know the maximum RAM my mac can have is 4GB but i think thats the limit for the application anyway so buying a new mac and more RAM wouldnt help i dont think....
    any ideas?

  • What are all these duplicates in iTunes 11?

Why am I seeing all these duplicates in an album in iTunes 11? How can I get rid of them? Why do some have download from iCloud buttons?
    I don't want to think.
What's going on here. What has Apple done to a nice simple interface?
    doug

Anything you purchased from the iTunes store is now in iCloud, even if you have not used iCloud yourself. It is there to redownload, in case you've accidentally deleted or corrupted your library.  In iTunes 11, Apple made the decision for you that if you bought it, and the version you bought from them is not currently on your computer, they were going to give it back to you.  So, for example, if you added a CD version of a song or album at a higher bit rate than the one from the Store, they can only see you don't have their version and want you to take it back.
Try going to Preferences, Store, and unclick "Show iTunes in the Cloud Purchases"

  • What are all these badges/flags I see in my files?

I am new to Lightroom and find that there are badges or flags overlaid on all my thumbnails in Windows 7 photo files.
I have no clue to what they are.  Some are a rectangle with green color and a large white check and some are red rectangles with two right facing
"arrows " (or chevrons) on them.  I can't discern what their purpose is other than to block the view of my thumbnails almost completely.
Sure would like to know how to get rid of them.
There is nothing in the Lightroom User Guide on them that I can find ... there isn't even any section "B" in the index!  How can I look up badges??

There is nothing in the Lightroom User Guide on them that I can find
You can go to the online help:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Lightroom/3.0/Using/index.html
and search for "badge", and you'll get some useful information about what they are and how to control them.
Many people prefer to download the entire Help as a PDF file (see the link in the upper-right corner).  When I search the PDF for "badge", I get a few more useful hits.

  • What are all these light blue lines?

...and how do I get rid of them? I'm working in AICS6. I have a number of paths with images placed inside (called "clipped groups" in the Layers Palette). Running across my entire space are these light blue lines that go on and off with the "clipped group" visibility button in the Layers Palette. They serve no purpose for me and are really annoying as they are cluttering up my drawing area. How do I turn them off, preferably permanently? Thanks in advance.
    MH

I hope you can see this. They extend to infinity (or at least AI's version of infinity) in both directions. If they are "smart guides" I don't see what is so smart about them nor what they are guiding. I'm sure I'm missing something useful, but I need to get this project done and right now they are just making a mess of my illustration. Thanks for your help!  MH

  • What are all these files?

Since upgrading my Powerbook to 10.5 I noticed that I am seeing all the system files at the top level of the hard drive, these include bin cores etc sbin usr var volumes. Even after upgrading to 10.5.2 they are still there. Is there an easy way to make them invisible again?

I've had this happen on a few machines, here's how to solve:
    Open TextEdit
Create a documnet and put each visible item name you want to stay hidden on a line ie.:
    bin
    cores
    etc
    sbin
    usr
    var
    volumes
Then go to the Format menu and select "Make Plain Text".
Now save the file as ".hidden" in the root (make sure you don't have the .txt extension & also uncheck "If no extension is provided, use .txt")
Now restart and those files will be hidden. Note: if you notice any items left out upon restart, you can reopen the ".hidden" file by recent documents.

  • Just downloaded FF 4 beta 1 and... what the hell am I looking at? What are all these multi-colored buttons all over the top of my screen?

What is this? I just downloaded FF 4 beta 1, and I make figure out what all of this at the top of my screen is for. I wish I could send you a screen shot! The actual window is cut in half...what the hell?
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== As soon as it was downloaded and installed

That's Page Saver, and it's great for taking a snap shot of a webpage. It doesn't capture any of the browser tool bars and such, though, and that's where my problem is. I've got a great splat of toolbar and many many many colored buttons and other random things eating up the top four or more inches of the screen when I open FF4b1, and I can't get rid of it. A screen capture shows the problem well, but something made with Page Saver only shows the web content and none of the browser.
This is turning out to be far more trouble than it's worth.

  • WHAT are all these printer drivers?

does anyone know if (in the vein of monolingual) there's a utility (or just a way) to remove the gratuitous printer drivers present in OSX? is this advisable? i really don't think i'll be printing directly from this machine in the next few years any time.

IIRC there have been standard OS updates (point) that contain updated printer drivers. I think it was epson. You'll probably get them anyways. I wouldn't advise removing them. Sure, it's 2gigs or something like that, but it's a really useful 2 gigs (might be a little less). You may find yourself printing wirelessly and being really glad you kept all those drivers. The thing about Mac OS X just working is exactly what you're thinking about gutting.
In the vein of monolingual how bout gutting everything but C? I mean...who needs java right.
Calm down....it's not that much space... get a cup, stand outside a supermarket, and soon enough you too can get a larger hard drive.
But..yeah...I would advise against it as being 1) more trouble than it's worth, 2) unreliable, and 3) something you might regret.
You may not need a certain language input menu, but you just may need to print something out. Kinda a higher probability there.
Anyways it IS your Mac. Do what you want with it
    Good Luck,

  • What are all these unwanted sounds?

Recently, after I've signed onto the my A8 17-inch laptop, the appearance of my desktop is accompanied by an obnoxious trumpet fanfare.  I have no idea why this started;  I sure did not program it.  The other day an annoying electronic sound accompanied my clicking on sites in my favorites list.  That's gone, but the trumpets remain.  Can you help me get rid of these?

Type "Change system sounds" into the Start Menu's search box and hit ENTER. Use that utility to change Windows sounds.

  • SharePoint 2013 - What are all requirement components for People Pickers to list, search, display, and assign users permission

    Hi All
the past few months, I have been working with permission issues related to SharePoint 2013 site permission settings using People Pickers to list, search, display users to assign or check permission.
Our environment include multiple domains and few forests. Our SharePoint farm is installed on one domain but the good thing is our AD structure are configured to have all other domains and forests with 2 ways trusts with this domain so domain
users are authenticated and can access SharePoint just fine. Also SharePoint use default claim authentication.
The problem is People Picker is not display all domains user accounts when site owners need to assign permission. So to resolve the problem, I had provisioned
SA - User profile service and Import AD domain user accounts (one way) into Sharepoint.
    I configured stsadm.exe -o setproperty -pn peoplepicker-searchadforests -pv
for all domains and forests (eventhough, as mentioned we do have 2 ways trust)
and sometime tried different query (user last name, domain\logonname, email address) if one is not showing.
With all that added, People Pickers seem to find and display user account for all domains now.
My question now is do UPS and all AD domains users need to be imported into SharePoint and STSadm configuration are required in order to have all domains user accounts to display in People Pickers so the site owners can
find them and assign permission when needed?
Please share your advices, comments as they are really valuable to me.
    Thanks
    Swanl

UPS and people pickers are virtually unrelated. The only connection between them is to do with caching and updating user names and emails if they change over time, or in other words not relevant to your situation.
To answer your question directly; Nope, you do not need to set up synchronisation connections to a domain to be able to pick up a person in a people picker. As you've seen you may need to run some STSADM commands to make sure they are checking the right
    places.
