IPhotos vanish to a dotted square

After rebuilding my hard drive from a Time Machine backup many of my older photos disappear on me.
OS X 10.10.1 Yosemite / iMac 21.5 Mid 2011 / IPhoto 9.6
The photos appear briefly then disappear.  I am also on a new Time Capsule now for backup.  My old backup that was used to rebuild was full.

Note:  I am not using OS X mavericks  There were no other options and this is my first post.

  • When using Firefox for the 1st time, I was unable to save or edit bookmarks. I fixed this but now the icon for the bookmark is a blank dotted square. How do I fix this?

I deleted the "places.sqlite" and "localstore" files as instructed in the support FAQ section, and now i can save bookmarks, but in the Bookmarks toolbar and drop down menu, the only bookmark that has an icon(picture) next to the name of the bookmark is one that I use the IE Tab extension for due to incompatibility of that website with Firefox. This one does have an Internet Explorer Icon. The rest are just a blank dotted square where the icon should be. I downloaded Firefox 8 first and was having this problem, so I tried Aurora, which I am using now but got the same problem. The below support instructions solved the problem of not being able to save Bookmarks, but now I am having the icon issue.

  • When i click on projects in brower in browser mode i only get a dotted square

when i click on projects in aperture i receive a dotted square in browser mode i am wondering where the many images in the projects have gone

gee thats fantastic, missing a core feature of photoshop and all.. but is there any plugin or program other than using gimp with the gap plugin? I knew a lot of people that edited in special effects using that, its the MAIN tutorial on any gif making tutorial is using video to frames.
So you basically removed the internets best way to make gifs.. so now my expensive software is less useful than gimp in some cases...

when I upload photos, some of the images do not show, but appear as a dotted square. has anyone had this problem?

Hi Terence, When I am uploading photos from a memory card, not all of the photos show up on I photo as a photo image, but show up as a dotted square line. For example, I just added 12 photo from two days. The first day had 5 photos, but only 4 show up as images, then there is 1 as dotted  a square. The next day, there 7 images, with only 4 showing up as photos, and three as the dotted squares.
    I am using I photo 11, 9.1.1.
    Thank you

  • On some of the tabs I pin to the top of the browser as an "app" the website icon is simply a dotted square!? Others have the web-logo. Is there a fix for that or procedure I am missing?

Wondering why some website tabs I pin to the browser just show a small dotted square instead of the website's logo. So then, I have to hover over the tab to reveal text as to what site it is! Is there a fix for this??? Thanks

If the web site doesn't provide a Favicon, Firefox uses the default "icon". As of Firefox 8.0 that default icon is the blank dashed square, where earlier versions used an icon that was a bit narrower and looked like a sheet of paper with the upper-right corner folded over.
You can revert to the old default icon with this '''userChrome.css''' code. <br /> <br />
    <pre><nowiki> @namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */
    #page-proxy-favicon:not(src), .tab-icon-image:not(src) {
    list-style-image: url("chrome://global/skin/icons/folder-item.png")!important;
    -moz-image-region: rect(0px, 16px, 16px, 0px)!important;
    </nowiki></pre>

  • Why is the new tab icon a dotted square?

hey when i used to press the "add tab" button, it would open a tab, and the icon on the tab was a picture of a blank page.
it has now been replaced with a dotted-line square.
first off this is ugly, and secondly i didn't click on anything to change this, and i didn't ask for a change... how can i get the page back as the icon? it now has a dotted-line square for all websites without icons i've realized.
    please help

  • Recently bought a mac book pro with lion, and using time machine brought over all my info from my mac book with snow leopard. Iphoto is now showing blank squares. I already rebuilt the library. What next?

Info in the title. I've received conflicting advice help from the Apple Store so I thought I'd try here. I've restored iphoto from my lastest back-up on time machine from my old computer (iphoto works well on old computer), I've rebuilt the library, I've put the old library on a thumb drive and loaded it manually. It's all there on my old computer, but won't work in my new iphoto.

Try directly copying the Library from the old machine.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • Iphoto vanished!

I was using Adobe Photoshop and wanted to open a pic from iphoto (by the way, not '09. I've had my mac for about two years and it came with iphoto). I clicked on the icon in my dock and a question mark showed up over the icon. So I clicked it again and accidentally dragged it up into photoshop and it disappeared. I've searched for it every possible way I can and I've come up with nothing. I've only had a Mac for a couple years so I'm still learning. I think Time Machine is kind of like system restore on a PC but I've never set it up. Is it gone for good? Was it maybe a trial run since my Mac came with it and I didn't buy it?

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash) (Seems like you can skip this step)
    2. Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only...’
I think Time Machine is kind of like system restore on a PC but I've never set it up.
But you do have a back up, right? You're not so foolish as to run a computer without some backup of your important data? Right?
    Regards
    TD

  • Iphoto "Vanished" from my computer!..

One day last week, I was happily working on one of my magnificent iphoto
    slideshows...
Yes, it happened!.....as quick as a puff!.... "all gone!".... I remained calm since I knew I was an old hand at this kind of shock!..
And, I knew I had done nothing to goad this malfunction into oblivion...
I then retraced my previous steps, and still came to the conclusion that I was not to blame for this mini disaster..
I immediately made an appointment with Apple Pro Care in my area and lugged my most prized possesion "QuickSilver 933" into the loving hands of an eager "ProCare Genius"...
It then took him about three taps on the keyboard, and my whole iPhoto library came back to life!...
I wiped away my tears of joy!....I kissed him on the lips, then humbly asked "Could you show me how you did that, so that I'll be able to do the same if this ever happens to me again?"...
He then happily proceeded to explain to me what he did.
But, having the low IQ that I was cursed with, I now only have the slightest
recollection of what he patiently had told me..
I do recall that in iphoto, he held down the "option" key, and a window popped up saying something to the effect " do you want to create a new library?".... something like that....
And he did mention "Switching between photo libraries" also.
I also tried getting some info in the "iPhoto help section" but I got nowhere..
Therefore, I'd appreciate any info that would assist me in recovering a
iphoto library, so that I could then refer to it if any future disaster ever
    again occurs.
    Thanks
    S. Pedi

I'll elaborate on TD's succinct reply. When you Option-launch iPhoto, it brings up a dialog box asking you to either Create a new library or Choose a library. Some people like to keep more than one library. You might want to place older photos in one library and keep your more recent photos in a separate library. Or keep one library for work and one for personal photos. Option-Launching is the way to switch between libraries. iPhoto can only open one library at a time. It will always open the library that was used when iPhoto was last closed.
Another reason to bring up this dialog box is to move your iPhoto library. For example, if you wish to run iPhoto from an external hard drive, you simply copy the iPhoto Library folder to the external drive, then Option-Launch and navigate to its new location. This is also the correct procedure for restoring your iPhoto library from a backup, whether it is located on a hard drive or a DVD. You would first copy the iPhoto library folder back to your preferred drive, then point iPhoto to it.
If you were running iPhoto from an external and the power went out to that drive, iPhoto would not be able to locate the library. It would then be necessary to turn on the drive and use that dialog to navigate back to the iPhoto library folder.
In case you haven't seen Old Toad's tip for preventing database loss, I'll tell you now. After you close iPhoto each time you have worked and made changes to your library, you can Duplicate (File > Duplicate) the file called Library6.iPhoto. It is located just inside your iPhoto Library folder. Duplicating it will create a copy called Library6 copy.iPhoto, which is your insurance policy. If you have a power outage while iPhoto is writing to the database and everything seems to be lost, you replace the damaged Library6.iPhoto file with its copy and the database is restored to where it was the last time you duplicated the file. This can save you days of work that you otherwise would spend trying to recreate your library.
Remember, this is the only thing you should do in the iPhoto Library folder from within the Finder. (And only do it when iPhoto is closed.) Otherwise, stay out of that folder and do everything from inside the iPhoto application.
I am glad that your library was restored easily. The fact that you remained calm and sought help demonstrates that you are not lacking in IQ points, after all. Plus, you do tell a great story!

  • All my books is iphoto vanished

I was importing some pictures into iphoto. It froze. I used force quit to exit application. When i clicked iphoto again all my books were gone! I don't mind the finished ones that i've saved as pdf, but i have 3 books that were almost done in the finishing touches!!!!
How do i recover these books? I tried searching for files in finder but couldn't find any. HELP!
In future, how do I save a book that I am working on. I don't want to save as pdf because you can't revise it.
    Thank you.

    dondiliza:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The file you want to have backed up and current if the Library6.iPhoto database file.
Another way to help avoid this in the future is to create a new library for each book and import only those photos you need into it. One way is to create an album in the main library and fill it with book photo. Then either select all and drag to a folder on the desktop for importing into the book library or use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager to move that album of photo between libraries.
The benefits of this are twofold. One, there's less use, importing, etc., of the book library and less chance of an incident like you experienced. The second is that after you've ordered and received the book that book library folder can be burned via the Finder to a CD for saving and reuse if you desire to order another copy at a later date. No chance of messing it up once it's on disk.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • IPhoto 8- Pictures import as black square

Have encountered a problem when importing (2) jpg images to Iphoto 8. Images have been saved on desktop and then imported to Iphoto with result a black square. Have tried importing images to other photo albums as well as to a PC with no problem.
Can anyone out there help? I am a newbie to Mac

Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
What is the source of these photos? The most common cause of "black" photos is that the photos are not RGB (the only color model supported by iPhoto) - if they are scanned photos and have a gray scale color profile you will have to change them to sRGB to work in iPhoto -- If that is it and you have lots to do, Old Toad has an automator script to do bulk conversions - search his posts for a link

  • Pictures in iPhoto turn into tiny square

HI... When I view my pictures in iPhoto, they turn into tiny squares. How do I get rid of this? What happened to my iPhoto? I have OS X 10.9.5 installed and iPhoto version is 9.5.1
    Thanks
    Jen

This is a capture of what I'm talking about.  All the rectangles on are appearing on the image.  Interesting that when you scroll to another picture and then back, these change location, so I'm not sure its a corrupt file.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • ORDER A PRINT ONLINE OF A SQUARE PHOTO IN IPHOTO

How can I order a print of square photos in IPHOTO without them cropping it out as it happened, instead of scaling it down to fit the paper and leave a white border as I assumed they would do??
    MACCBOOK   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Ricardo:
You can't. iPhoto doesn't offer a square format. All prints are borderless. If you want a square print you'll need to use one of the other online providers.

I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
