IPlanet Messaging Server -- kill session at browser close
iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 HotFix 2.09
We found a potential security risk.
When a person loads Messenger Express through the web and closes their browser, another person can come in behind them and resume the previous persons session. This is accomplished by going through the browser history and accessing any of the links that point inside the mail client.
When the browser closes, the session isnt killed. Its only killed/inaccessible if the user times out or clicks log-out. We've tested this on just about any browser we can get our hands on.
Is there a fix/patch/workaround for this? I've combed the documentation and the site and can find nothing.
We are using the product in an University environment and this can be particularly nasty in the labs.
Thanks!

There is an idletimeout that defaults to 10 minutes.

How to kill session on browser close
Can anyone tell me, how to invalidate the session on browser closes. I am using Internet Explorer as
browser.Hi anmol10
if evnafets is to be believed, there is no 100% surefire way to do this. This is doing my head in a bit - I refuse to believe that there isn't some way around this.
I've been trying all kinds of things, kicking off threads that keep track of the sessions etc, but to no avail.
Let us know if you think of anything! -
Hi..
iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 Patch 2 (built Jul 14 2004)
libimta.so 5.2 Patch 2 (built 19:30:12, Jul 14 2004)
I heard that SUN have released security vulnerability in Sun Java System or iPlanet Messaging Servers that may allow remote unprivileged users to craft specific messages which contain Javascript to be executed in the end user's browser.
The problem can be solved by using iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 (for Solaris 8 and 9) with patch 5.2hf2.13 or later..
where can I download patch 5.2hf2.13 for messaging server 5.2 ?Hi,
If you have a support contract with SUN you can log a service request to get a copy of the patch via:
http://www.sun.com/service/online/

Where can i find the IPlanet Messaging Server API
I am trying to log a user into the IPlanet Messaging Server when the user logs into the IPlanet Portal Server. I would like to create a SSO effect between the portal server and the messaging server.
ThanksCheck out the documentation for PMDF API and SIMS API. The MTA comes from PMDF. I just did a quick check and could not find out when documentation will be out regarding iMS-MTA API.
For what you want to accomplish I don't think the MTA-API is where you need to be looking. I know that ME and iDA SSO can be enabled, and I think it can be done with Portal as well, but I do not know how. -
Please help me about the Iplanet Messaging Server,SOS!!!!!
I have just installed Iplanet DS and IPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 .But I can only use web to check or send mail . When I use Out Look Express ,I can only send mail and not check mail.Please give me the reason and solution.
How did you set the user up? Have you implemented "direct ldap", per Appendix A in the Admin Guide?

Hi, there.
I wrote a custom plug-in for Netscape Messaging Server 4.15. The client for
whom I did this is now upgrading to iPlanet Messaging Server 5.1 and has
requested that I update the custom plug-in accordingly. Unfortunately, as
specified in the iPlanet migration documents, you have to re-code the
plug-in as a channel to get it to work under iPlanet Messaging Server...
I've scoured the documentation about how to go about doing this, but I don't
know how to get started as I don't know anything about writing a channel.
The plug-in processes incoming messages to see if they were sent from a
specific domain. It then adds an arbitrary signature to each appropriate
MIME part in the message before letting the messaging server relay it.
1. Can anyone direct me to some explicit directions about how to write a
channel for iPlanet Messaging Server? The documentation for Netscape
Messaging Server was extremely helpful; I haven't found anything equivalent
for iPlanet channels.
2. Channels run as daemons? Do you have to start them when the machine
boots, or are they started for you by the MTA as a result of the channel
configuration file?
3. Do channels listen with sockets on a particular port for communication?
Do I have to parse incoming data and encode outgoing data as if it was an
SMTP communication?
4. Can an SMTP channel co-exist with other SMTP channels on the same
machine? Do the channels have to listen on unique ports? (Sorry, my socket
programming is a little rusty.)
Anxiously awaiting your reply...
Sean Dockery
[email protected]What is the expected result of the plug-in?
Also, if you set the smtp log level to debug do you see it initializing the plugin at startup time and also entering the plugin during the smtp-accepts? -
How do can we see the iplanet messaging server statistics?
I need to know how many emails our iplanet messaging server is processing per day/month/year etc and the volume of data that this represents. How can I read the logs? Is there a tool for doing this?
Thanks
PaulThe imap, pop, and http processes have counters, as does the MTA. Check out the manual for the command line utlities for iMS.
As for the MTA logs, the format is documented and thus you can easily write your own tool to parse and report on what you need. I did it years ago and I would share that with you but it has fallen behind in the format and thus needs serious updating.
There is no built in tool to process log files. -

cmdpath: noneYou are probably installing on a hardened machine.
The "installation guide" says that if you are doing so, you need to create a file named libx11.so.4 and update your LD_LIBRARY_PATH (see http://docs.iplanet.com/docs/manuals/messaging/ims52/ig/unix/overview.htm)but:
1- the library name is libX11.so.4 and
2- for jre a common file is not enough, you need to install SUNWxwplt at least. This will install the library on /usr/openwin/lib.
You can check the results running <server-root>/bin/base/jre/bin/jre

How to disable one email account in iPlanet Messaging Server 4.5
Hi,
Any one can tell me how to disable a single user in iPlanet Messaging Server 4.5.
Thanks
AbidI wonder what product you're really talking about.
There was never a product called, "Netscape Messaging Server 4.5". There was 4.1 and 4.15, but the next product was 5.0.
These are all long discontinued, and nobody should be using them anymore.
Assuming it's 4.1, check your ldap record for "inetuserstatus" and set it to "disabled", or even "deleted" -
IPlanet Messaging Server timeout
Hi,
We have iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 HotFix 2.02 (built Oct 21 2004) installed in one of our Solaris8 boxes. While deposting message using SMTP we are getting a timeout. We need to wait more than 30seconds for the message to get deposited.
This was not happening earlier.
I am a novice in Messging server configuration/trouble shooting.
Could anyone help us with this. This is a pressing need and your help is highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Could anyone help us with this. This is a pressing need and your help is highly appreciated.If this is a pressing issue you should be logging a Sun support request (assuming you have a support contract of course).
Given the length of the timeout I can hazard a guess that the problem is DNS related. The usual timeout for DNS problems is ~30 seconds. Have you changed anything DNS related/DNS networking issues?
If you telnet to your mail-server (port 25) does it take a long time for the initial banner message to return?
e.g.
telnet <mailserver> 25

Ending a session on browser close only (firefox)
I'm trying to end a user's session when they close the browser, because they never logout properly.
I need to change a value in the db after they close the browser only.
<script type ="text/javascript" >
var clicked = false;
var xmlHttp
var browser = navigator.appName;
function CheckBrowser() {
if (clicked == false) {
xmlHttp = GetXmlHttpObject();
xmlHttp.open("GET", "../LogOut.aspx", true);
xmlHttp.onreadystatechange = function () {
if (xmlHttp.readyState == 4) {
//alert(xmlhttp.responseText)
xmlHttp.send(null)
if (browser == "Netscape")
alert("Nog een fijne dag.");
else {
//alert("Redirected");
clicked = false;
function GetXmlHttpObject() {
var xmlHttp = null;
try {
// Firefox, Opera 8.0+, Safari
xmlHttp = new XMLHttpRequest();
catch (e) {
//Internet Explorer
try {
xmlHttp = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP");
catch (e) {
xmlHttp = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");
return xmlHttp;
</script>
That works for every browser except firefox.
Please help me with this.

Here is a question I'm having to luck with. I have a VI, set to be reentrant, which is published via the web server. The main VI instance is never interacted with: it makes a clone every time someone navigates to the proper URL, and the user interacts with the newly created clone (never the main instance). A clones is capable of configuring and calling instrument VI's when proper login credentials are entered, which results in browser popups that are controllable on the user's end (though only one user is ever doing this at a time. To clarify, multiple clones can be open simultaneously for login purposes, but only one user is ever interacting with the instruments, which aren't themselves reentrant).
If the user clicks my custom logout button in their browser, it is trivial to close these other, independent instruments and clean up properly. But if the user simply clicks the red X in their browser, there is no graceful shutdown and the instruments which the clone called stay open on the server, when they should be closing.
My experience so far:
No panel close? event seems to be triggered in the clone. The clone simply ceases to be.
The remote_panel_connections property doesn't seem to work correctly in this instance (I haven't had any luck so far), since it is possible for more than one clone to be active, and the main parent that is spawning the clones stays running but isn't interacted with in any way.
What I Need:
A way for the clone VI to recognize that the user has closed their browser, and communicate that it is closing to all active VI's before terminating.
I would like to avoid forcing the instruments that the clone calls to poll constantly to see if the clone VI is present on the network. If there is no other solution but this, I would appreciate a suggestion as to the least resource and code intensive way to implement this type of polling, as the instruments are really meant to be totally independent entities after they are called, rather than sub vi's.
Thanks for any input, let me know if more information is needed.
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hey MTdev,
Panel close? events cannot be triggered on a VI being viewed or controlled remotely. Some more information on that can be found in the help here:http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/371361E-01/lvprop/vi_panel_closeq/. My suggestion would be to set the Title Bar on the front panel of your remote VI to not be visible so that their only option for closing the window is to click the logout button. Are you using Remote Front Panels(http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/3277) to do this instrument control? Using remote front panels allows you to manage a lot of the multiple people accesssing at the same-time type issues so it may be something to look into if you are not already using this method.

IPlanet Messaging Server 5.1 and POP Error?
I've noticed a strange bug with iMS v5.1 and POP (HP-UX). If I send a message with a binary attachment (~250KB), I cannot retrieve the message.
Example:
1. Type the following command after telnetting to port 110 on the server running iMS
USER uid
PASS password
RETR 1
In this case, iMS returns the entire message, but fails to add the "." which signals the end of message has been reached.
If I type "RETR 1" again, the entire message, including the "." is returned.If your using portal in an open portal mode, then use the mail channel available. Unfortunately this does not work if your using a gateway.
-
I'd start with the basics, can you ping the iMS machine? Can you telnet to port 25 on the machine? Do these steps from the MSX server.
If those things work, which I suspect they will not based on the text "Host unreachable" in your question then I would put master_debug slave_debug on the channel which the MSX system is arriving, either going to be tcp_local or tcp_intranet. Then look at the resulting log file on the iMS system.
Hope this helps,
Chad -
iPS Mobility Access Pack is an add-on package to iPS
It provides Calendar, Mail, and Address Book provider channels that easily integrate iMS, iCS, iDS, into Portal.
It helps to have an external LDAP configuration also,
this holds userid/passwords for both iMS and iCS and can be used for Portal to authenticate against. Just
configure via Portal admin a domain, authentication, LDAP.
Messaging needs some parameters configured.
Using configutil, set the following:
local.webmail.sso.enable 1
local.webmail.sso.prefix ssogrp1
local.webmail.sso.id msg50
local.webmail.sso.singlesignoff 1
service.http.ipsecurity no
Restart everything, and as a user, login using LDAP
authentication, then Edit your content enabling
the Mail Provider. With the Mail Provider enabled,
Edit the channel filling in the information based on
your Messenger Express client.
Good luck.
