IPList/IPBlock breaks SLiM - Why?

Recently I've installed IPList/IPBlock, on my computer, but after putting 'ipblock' into my daemons array in rc.conf, I am unable to log in normally. Instead of the usual SLiM login screen, x hangs at a black screen. When I switch to another virtual terminal and kill X, I can use startx to boot into my usual graphic environment. However, killing X and trying to boot into SLiM fails, claiming that SLiM is already running, which I have to kill twice (!) before running it again. SLiM will then load, but my computer will become non-responsive, with my cursor becoming a black "X," and me being unable to switch to another virtual terminal.
When I boot into the blank screen (immediately after boot, before switching to a tty), this message floods my messages.log:

The deal breaker, or why I won't upgrade to Nokia ...

Why can't Nokia come up with a really competitive budget smartphone offering? Why can't it give as an all-around decent phone like it used to do in the good old dates?
For the last 2 years, I've been using Nokia 5530. It was a nice budget offering for its time, but the experience was hindered by an abysmally slow CPU and low amount of RAM (which might have been acceptable for a entry-level smartphone in 2009, but to put exactly the same hardware to models 5800 and C6-00 was a crime; it basically killed otherwise capable smartphones). The software also wasn't up-to-par, with a totally tragic attempt at creating a web browser, (somehow improved as of now, but it still can't overcome the hardware limitations, thankfully Opera manages to save the day) obstacles to install new apps (I finally figured out how to sign them myself, but why was Nokia forcing me to do that, making my life harder for apparently no purpose?) and certainly not well thought-out UI.
Now it comes the time for upgrade and it seems Nokia has finally learned its lesson. New budget Nokia 500 runs at whooping 1 GHz, has a vastly improved UI, comes with a GPS with free maps, has a new, significantly better screen and is finally the Nokia phone we've been waiting for for a long, long time...NOT
Because, as it is customary with Nokia lately, someone had to break it.
For quite a few years Nokia phones have been famous for their excellent cameras, so on e would assume e that at least THIS won't ever be a problem. Well, one would assume wrong as Nokia 500 totally neglects this feature. Don't get me wrong, it's a budget offering and I'm not assuming I'd get a N8 style hardware, but even my entry level 5530 more than 2 years ago had an autofocus with a LED flash. The 500 is unmistakably targeted at value conscious high school and college students yet it doesn't have this crucial feature of being able o take a quick photo of their notes, a page in a book or some printed announcement. It's the year 2011 for God's sake, autofocus is not a premium feature, it's a MUST for any (semi-)decent phone. Ho could anyone overlook it?

What are timecode breaks and why do they happen?

I am trying to capture a tape from a Canon GL2, and it has tons of TC breaks. I have read the previous posts on TC breaks and I think I know how to work around them, but I don't quite understand what they are and why they happen. Does it mean the tape is bad? Or did something go wrong when I recorded the footage with the camera? How do I avoid them in the future?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Best practice for this issue comes down the the shooter.
- Get in the habit of always rolling 5 sec. of tape before action starts and 5 seconds of tape after action ends.
- Try not to turn the camera off.
- Try not to do 'searches' on tapes that are being recorded on.
- If the camera is turned off, or you need to search back into the tape, make sure you do NOT roll past the end of the last recorded frame...preferable stop a couple of seconds prior to the last recorded frame, and begin recording there.
- If your camera is capable of generating Bars, try to record 10 seconds of bars in between scene or location changes...gives you an identifier and room to roll into already recorded TC.
-if you have to pop the tape out of the camera at any point, follow the above listed practice of cueing up to a couple of seconds prior to the last recorded frame, and start recording there to pick up continous timecode.
-try not to use 'free-run' timecode. It will make editing an absolute nightmare.

Problem with importing page breaks

When I import text from WORD, Indesign adds an extra space after my manual page breaks. See pic.
How do I change this setting?

Peter, yes, I placed the cursor right in front of the first letter in the line when I inserted the page break.
Here's an answer I just got from a MS Office forum. I am led to assume that I will now have to fix this "empty paragraph" problem manually before I import any MS Word 2010 doc into InDesign...

In previous versions of Word, you could have unintended results: if you changed the line immediately after the page break to a heading, the line before the page break would be formatted as a heading too because it belonged to the same paragraph. Automatically inserting a paragraph break prevents that, so for most users this will be an improvement. You can delete the extra paragraph breaks after inserting the page break.

Why is my video jumping?

my problem is this.
i am recording gameplay from my xbox using a hauppauge hd pvr and eyetv.
it all is working fine, however, the footage i record playes perfectly well in imovie 11.
but when i export it into final cut X, to jazz it up a bit, the video still plays but is a little jumpy. its as if your watching a tv and the signal starts to break up.
why is this happening?
i am importing the game footage at 1080i if that helps.

I found the Fixed Resolution button - I couldn't see it because I'm actually in 3D mode because I've got a lighting effect on the scene, and the Fixed Resolution setting only seems to be an option in 2D mode.
I switched to 2D and now it's all clean - so thanks a lot!

More questions: Are the HTMLDB_APPLICATION.g_f?? values dependent on the query order or the order that is displayed in the report?
Denes is using a field check_char to hold the value, and I am using a field called approval. I also do not want fields (other than the 'approval' field to be updateable from the [updateable] report. Denes is using updateable fields in his example, and if I set a field to be a report field rather than editable, the app breaks. Why?
I have read the documentation on the checkbox function, but it does not help a lot; and I have not found other explanations in this forum.

.g_f(#) then yes. This refers to the position in the
field, example your query has 6 outputs labeled
1 = .g_f01
2 = .g_f02
3 = .g_f03
4 = .g_f04
5 = .g_f05
6 = .g_f06

What I meant about the order is that you can change the display order in the report (select the report attributes tab from the report region and toggle the display order) and not change the order in the original query. Is it the query order or the display order that matters? As for the example report itself, I refer you to Denes' example. He has 10 fields total, and 6 are editable, two are hidden.

Yes is the simple answer, you have the option under
the edit region to allow an end user to update the
form as well as write into the code the option to
update the Database directly with something as simple
as a button.

Creating popup menus using bookmarks in acrobat pdf

Hi All,
I have a requirment to create a button called "Index" in a pdf.
When I click on that button it should show the popup menu and if I click any of the menuitem in that, it should take me to that particular page. I saw some of the interactive pdf's available on the web and they have this facility. I tried to incorporate this into my pdf, it shows the popup menu item correctly but not taking me to that particular page and throughs an error message.

Error during install

I downloaded the trial version of dreamweaver and every time
I try to install I get the following error--The system
administrator has set policies to prevent this installation-- I
have xp home sp2 only one user the defalut one setup during windows
install. Does anybody know what windows defalut policies this
program breaks and how would I install if it breaks defalut
policies? I am unable to contact Adobe support because this is a
free download trial with no ser#

5-screen (multi-monitor) nVidia xorg.conf -- my setup

Hi. I would like to share my xorg.conf, since it took forever to get right.
There isn't a lot of information out there for folks using > 2 monitors, or several graphics cards, or esoteric setups including rotation etc. I hope this will be useful; I wouldn't mind contributing to the wiki if anybody thinks it might be useful.
So first up: hardware. I have
nVidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti connected to a 24" monitor (in the middle)
nVidia GeForce 210 connected to two 19" monitors, rotated into portrait (on either side of the 24")
nVidia GeForce GT 440 connected to two 15" monitors (above the 24")
here is a picture of the monitors, click for a bigger version
Drivers: I'm using the official nVidia drivers, I couldn't get nouveau to work. Since I am using Xinerama, the XRandR extension isn't loaded -- therefore my setup won't be suitable for people whose screen configuration changes dynamically. But I'd prefer not to use Xinerama, and even to use nouveau if possible; if anybody has a similar configuration working with nouveau, please share
Finally, the actual config itself. Here it is on pastebin.
Rotation
The correct way to rotate monitors in xorg.conf is through the metamodes option of the Screen section. On my Screen 2 and 4 (the two 19" monitors), you can see that

has been added at the end of the metamodes option. Contrary to some other guides floating around, it is not necessary to specify these options:

I believe these come from an earlier version of Xorg. They don't have any effect when I put them in my xorg.conf, using Xorg 1.12.4 and nVidia 304.43.
Even when I specified rotate in metamodes, my monitors didn't appear to rotate because I had originally written
Option "metamodes" "CRT-1: nvidia-auto-select +0+0 { Rotation = left} "
instead of
Option "metamodes" "DFP-1: nvidia-auto-select +0+0 { Rotation = left} "
This just made rotation fail silently, with no error message. Make sure to specify DFP if you're using a digital output (DVI, HDMI, DP) and CRT only if you're using a VGA output on your graphics board.
Tips
When you're testing out a new Xorg.conf, you can use
startx -- :1
to start a new X server without killing the current one. See if your configuration works, then switch back to your original X server by pressing Cmd-Alt-F7.
You should also keep a log of different configurations you have tried. You can use a version control system like git to track changes to your Xorg.conf; make sure you document every change you have made, and why, it can prove invaluable later on.
Feel free to ask about this setup. I would like to know something: what is the function of the Screen option in the Device section? On the four Device entries for my nVidia 210 and 440 cards, there is an option called Screen; when I take it out, the setup breaks. Why are they there? And why do they not map to the screen numbers in the Screen section? (They are numbered 0, 0, 1, 1 rather than 1, 2, 3, 4)

The red arrows show the pointer progression through the monitors (moving mouse left to right). When the cursor is on the top monitor, it becomes an X, and the screen is black.

This what appears with the new xorg.conf:
"leftAcer" and "rightAcer" appear, but nothing appears on "topAcer" (it appears not to be getting a signal from the gpu). I can move the mouse pointer between "leftAcer" and "rightAcer".
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Here are a few details about the hardware setup:
GeForce 9600 GT is in the PCI:1 slot. It's DVI out is going to "acerLeft", it's VGA out is going to "acerRight".
GeForce GT 610 is in PCI:2 slot. It's VGA out is going to "acerTop".

Ipod is nothing more than a very expensive toy

I just bought my ipod touch. Some of the features are quite good. Also in writing this note, I am very new to the ipod. If there is a feature I complains about, it is because I don't know it exists. I have found the documentation on the ipod horribly incomplete if I want to go beyond using it as toy music or video player .
Having come from a palm pilot, I really like the touch pad and touch keyboard. Playing videos, music is OK. But everything has to go through itunes. Why cannt I just mount the ipod and using it as a disk. Then select music or videos I want to play. Of course those items having data rights would still need to go through itunes.
Notepads and such. No copy and paste. What gives. This is not rocket science. Apparently there was openclip or opencopy. Which if two applications wanted to use it could do a copy and paste between applications. But in a recent ipod update Apple squashed it.
Notes. I have to send myself an email to move a note between the ipod and my mac. Give me a break. Why not a simple sync like calendars and phone addresses.
Also notes has not formatting capability. There is magicpad, BUT it cannot sync its information with a host system. Again gimme a break.
The ipod has an incredible potential to be a very powerful portable office tool. But no cut and paste, and not being able to just mount it as a disk without itunes makes it a toy. Right now I use it as a toy. Watch movies in a restaurant.
Oh I did download filemagnet. so I can view some files. So I can get some work done. But filemagnet doesn't know how to deal with secure documents. So files with passwords appear as a blank screen. Maybe for coloring???

after well over a decade of palm organizers, the touch is, for me, a breath of fresh air.
calendar is my main app (synced with ical); phone book, notes (hopefully synced one of these days to notes in apple mail). contacts.
all these pda functions work great for me. having ereader, music, movies...a plus. then mail, safari, maps, subway map, dictionaries, airsharing...some games, fun stuff. myspace, photos, remote.
plus all the apps at the appstore...
anyway, seems like the touch is whatever you need it to be, which is pretty amazing...

JavaScript Runtime Errors in init.debug.js

I have a custom branding solution for a SharePoint 2013 site collection in Visual Studio. When I navigate the site collection or debug the solution, I seemingly randomly get Unhandled Exceptions in the /_layouts/15/init.debug.js. It's rather
0x800a03ee-JavaScript runtime error: Expected ')' or 0x80070005 JavaScript runtime error: Access is denied. The first error occurs just navigating the site collection. The second error occurs when I hover over the name with presence
at the bottom while editing an item. I haven't edited this script at all, so what can cause this JavaScript that is in the hive to throw exceptions, and what is a good approach to debug it in order to get to the root of the problem?

Thank you for your response. I'm in a SharePoint 2013 development environment using IE10. When I added the site collection as a trusted site in the local intranet zone in IE 10, I no longer get the JavaScript runtime related to the name of presence
and Access. When I deploy the solution, I do not get any errors. But if I debug in Visual Studio, the solution, which is set of features that installs a master page with custom navigation, I get this error when I navigate the site collection:

The error occurs in NotifyScriptLoadedAndExecuteWaitingJobs in init.debug.js, and the call stack goes back to DeltaManager$_ScriptLoader in start.debug.js and eventually to the browserHandler, ScriptResource.axd.
init.debug.js, correct me if I'm wrong please, is a JavaScript that SharePoint adds during debugging. If I go in the hive and add that ')' where it breaks, then everything breaks. Why is this error thrown, and what is the rev parameter at the
end of the query string?
The custom master page in the solution being installed has a line:

I added ScriptMode="Debug", and the errors occur during debugging. I changed it to ScriptMode="Release", and still got the same errors.
I'm not sure if and where in the code things are breaking, but I'm having trouble understanding why SharePoint, Visual Studio, and Internet Explorer behave in this manner.

Has anyone tried iUsers for sharing an iPad?

Trying to figure out the best way for my wife and I to share an iPad. There is a free download called iUsers that seems to have the right functionality, but the user reviews are from mid-2011 when it was still in Beta.
Has anyone tried this more recently? Would like to know your experience.

Ios7, ios8 wifi problem with Linksys WAP54G

I have 4 apple wireless devices (iPad mini, iPad 2, iPhone 4, iPhone5) in my house.     I have about 8 other wireless devices (non-apple).   I have a Linksys WAP54G wireless access point (on the latest software 3.08.06).
Everything worked just dandy until I upgraded to iOS7.   At that point, all apple wireless devices did the same thing: After a random amount of idle time, picking them back up again, they'd be disconnected from the network.   They all claimed they were connected to the wireless network, had an actual valid IP address from the WAP, but would not access the network.   Just spins.    Only solution is to deactivate wireless on the device, and re-activate.   Now works fine until the next random time it drops it again.
I figured this would be fixed in iOS8. No luck.
All other devices of different types (windows 8 lenovo laptops, Roku boxes, Tivo boxes, Nest thermostat, etc...) ALL have always connected just fine to the wireless network, and the Apple devices USED TO until iOS7.
Clearly they broke something in iOS7, and it is still broken in iOS8.
I realize this is an old WAP, but come on.
anyone else have this issue?    Apple, what did you break and why can't you fix it?

I am in the UK and have one of the fastest fibre optic broadband on the market but have the same issue with my iPad air since downloading ios8. I can no longer watch Netflix and pages close, or just go incredibly slow. Apple are you going to get this fixed. My iPad drops outs of my broadband connection and buffers constantly yet I have no problem with other devices.

Right-click contextual menu appearance

This is an odd one. Not serious, but I'd like to find out why.
We have two new Macbook Air's. One has the standard configuration, the other the higher spec CPU & Ram. When the lower spec version right-clicks on the desktop using a two finger tap, the menu appear instantly. When the higher spec version does this, it takes between 0.25 and 0.5 second to appear. As I said, not a deal breaker, but why the difference? They both have similar things running in the background, similar things in the menu bar? Very little CPU being used, etc. Geekbench puts the higher spec one 1000 points better off so regardless of what background process is running it shouldn't make this kind of difference anyway. Can anyone offer a suggestion as to how I might ascertain what's causing the hold-up?

This UI change is really stupid and useless. People got used to some specified menu items order. Changing this order could only annoy and anger.
Also the reload button has been relocated. This is another example of stupid Firefox 4 UI change. The good news is that it could easily be relocated to its original place.
It looks like the Firefox developers are suffering from idleness and boredom.
CHANGE IT BACK ASAP!!!
