Ipod 160 classic random pause

Ive read other people having a problem with their ipod 160classic randomly pausing for 2 secs then resuming play from where it left off. Ive also read this is probably an inherent design flaw with to small of a cache because it happens with larger files( i've only had it happen with my apple lossless files and wavs as opposed to my 256vbr mp3s). Is there any fix ive restored, my ipod defragged it, took off album art, and nothing helps. Nothings more annoying than having a random pause as your getting into the music then to have it continue where it left off. THe problem cannot be recreated its random if you rewind to where it occurred it wont repeat there but somewhere else. this happens 5 or more times per hour for me using the higher bit files.
I bought the 160 for the purpose of storing lossless files yet cant do it without this annoying problem is there a fix or a downgrade. Heck id be happy with no other features or color just to have it not pause while playing music. Ive also read that rockbox is not coming out for the classic and was hoping that might fix the problem. Any soulutions would be appreciated thanks for your time, -Shane

Hi Mitch, that is a really great point. I so rarely listen to the iPod undocked for extended periods, I decided to test it this morning.
I have been listening to it now, undocked for around 4 hours and have heard no pauses at all. Yesterday, it was pausing about every 10 minutes or so while playing in the dock. Maybe this is significant to determining the issue...
Thanks for asking the question, and leading me to a workaround..
It certainly means I can enjoy the iPod again, even if it's plugged into my HiFi using the headphone jack, and running on battery power. Still sounds great.
It would be nice if the device worked properly while docked, but I'm a lot happier now regardless.
Cheers, Bill

I'm having this problem with all types of files, 128 up to lossless. Very frustrating.

  • Classic Random Pauses and Gaps

Is there any news on fixing the Classic 160Gb random Pause issue?
I can be listening to my iPod in the car and itll be fine for 10 or so songs then mid-song it will pause for a second or so then continue playback. Its not in a dock or anything, just sat there playing away.
    Maybe its a caching issue?
I hope its a software thing and will be fixed soon as currently the iPod isnt fit for purpose. Could it be a hardware issue and Ive got a dodgy iPod?
I hear a few others have this problem.

I am really annoyed by it as well, but all I could find was this board that seems to go completely unnoticed by apple. I live in Mexico, so calling support would be completely irrelevant.. they'd ask me several stupid questions and it will end nowhere since they don't have the authority about such issues.
I'd cal the US if necessary, I am that annoyed.. but I believe that US customers would be the best way to get to Apple.. or a mail where we could send out complaints...
Thsi things never happened with my iPod Video 80 GB, which had the exact same lossless tracks.

  • Ipod nano keeps randomly pausing.

Ipod nano keeps pausing mid song and it's not the headphones... I've tried different sets of headphones & even held them in so they were flush. Still keeps happening. Been listening with no issue for about 2 hours before it started happrning all of a sudden. sometimes it will play 10 second sometimes it will [lay a few minuts but it always eventually pauses itself. Any ideas?

I just received my brand new 7th Gen iPod Nano today, ordered directly from the Apple website, and I am experiencing the exact same issue. I have tried several diffent pairs of headphones and regardless, the iPod randomly pauses. I also noticed that on occasion if I press play the iPod will indicate that it is playing music however no sound comes out of the headphones. It seems pretty clear to me the headphone jack is faulty... I suppose I'll need to get on the phone and deal with the highly inconvenient process of exchanging it. Very disappointed.

  • IPod 30gb video randomly pausing...anyone know why?

My 30gb video will randomly pause and will only unpause if I hit the play/pause button. Anyone have a suggestion?

When you unplug your headphones the iPod automatically pauses, so it could be a problem with your headphones or possibly a faulty headphone jack. Try a different pair of headphones.

  • IPod 120gb Classic randomly restarting

I just upgraded to a 120GB classic, my former iPod was a 4thGen 60gb. I've had it for just over 3 weeks now, and it's starting to act strange. Yesterday, it just stopped mid-song and restarted, and continued to do so. I'll get anywhere between 15-25 minutes of playtime, then it just restarts itself.
This has happened before, but not with any real frequency. Yesterday it started getting bad. Also, when it reboots to the apple screen, the colors are all distorted.
It's not at capacity (70+ gb free) and I'm running most the recent version of the software. The battery has almost a full charge. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

EXACTLY the same problem I'm having with my 120GB Classic, and it's only about three months old. The problem actually started after a few days of owning it. Restarts are random...sometimes it will be within a few minutes, other times after a few hours.
When I restore the iPod back to factory settings and resync my library it will temporarily cure the problem. However, if I add/remove/change music in my library and then sync again it tends to cause the problem to rear its ugly head once more.
I have sent the iPod back to Apple but they could find nothing wrong, and promptly sent it back to me.
Thinking it was a possible problem with my PC (Win XP Pro) I decided to wipe my PC at the weekend. I also rebuilt my itunes library. Still the fault reoccured. The other night I ran a tool called MP3Val (http://mp3val.sourceforge.net/download.shtml) on the mp3s on my hard drive to check them for any problems. Some of them did have some problems and I used the tool to repair them. Once this was done I did the restore and resync. Worked fine again until next sync and then back to square one again...
This is driving me mental now. I do not want to have restore my iPod every other day. It takes 2 hours for a start.
Oh, by the way, I trawled through the net a little while back, hoping to find a solution. One temp fix was to set the backlight to always on, and the brightness down to the lowest level. This DOES stop the restarts occurring but obviously this shouldn't be the fix we have to live with.
I'm going to take mine to my nearest Apple store next week. I've emailed them and they said they would replace it. Hopefully this will be the case and HOPEFULLY my next iPod won't have the same problem.

  • Video out on ipod 160 classic

I was looking into buy a classic ipod but dosen't the video out put only work through the bottom of the ipod and i heard on the video cable to the new ipod instead of the cable having a yellow end it has a blue end for video my tv's only have a yellow hole white and red hole will the new ipod work with my tv then i only want the ipod if i can do video output

You are correct in thinking that the Classic does not output video signals through the headphone output.
Check out the cables you need to connect to a TV here.

  • My ipod 160 classic ejects itself.

Before I can click on it in itunes it ejects and disapears. I already had it in Disk Mode and have been able ot use it within the past year sucessfully. Now it won't stop ejecting itself. How can I fix this? I even tried a new ipod cable.
    -Thanks!

Did you do a simple reboot of both the PC and iPod to see if that does any good?  It wouldn't hurt to also remove any other USB devices if they are connected.
To reset the iPod, press and hold both the Select/Center and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

  • NEW ipod Classic keeps pausing

My iPod classic keeps pausing randomly, every 1-4 minutes. It happens in my car when it's plugged into the auxillary jack and when I use headphones. When I am listening with headphones, it sits flat on my desk and doesn't move at all and it still pauses.

It may be related to the data "caching" used by iPods with a hard drive for storage.  This caching (pre-loading upcoming song data into memory) allows the iPod to play continuously, even if movement and vibration cause access to the iPod's hard drive to NOT be continuous.  However, if the iPod is stationary on a desk, this should not happen.
If you have not already, Reset (restart) the iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1320
If that does not help, you may want to do a Restore on the iPod using iTunes.  The cause may be data corruption on the iPod's storage.  The Restore button is on the iPod's Summary screen in iTunes.  This will erase the iPod, reinstall its software, and set it to default settings.  After the Restore, sync your songs as before, and see of this problem still recurs.
It's also possible that the iPod's hard drive is faulty, and that is why the iPod is having problems accessing the song data (which causes these pauses).  If the Restore does not resolve this problem, you should have it looked at under warranty.  If there is a conveniently located Apple Store, you can make a reservation at the store's Genius Bar.  OR, if possible, return it for a full refund and get another one.

  • Has the new model 160gb classic solved the random pauses and gaps problem?

Just wondering if the apple morons have solved the problems that the last 2 generation classics had with the random pauses and gaps?
I binned the first model 160gb that came out 2 years ago and went back to the 5th gen 80gb model which plays perfect.
If they have finally fixed the problem with the new classics, i'll be picking a new 160gb up, but not until i hear what people who already own them have to say first.

well your one lucky customer. having bought a 2009 ipod and no hard drive issues. i bought one and i got it to sync music and photos. but than it paused and restarted it and i got the red x. so i returned it and they exchanged it for a brand new still in the sealed box ipod and it was the same thing again. im gonna try sending it in. if it still happens, than im gonna have to refund.

  • I spend a long time to try to sync my itunes music on my ipod 160 GB Classic, but after waiting so long get a pop up message that itunes stop syncing because of error 46, some times giving me 58, 1469, and many other numbers, please help macbook pro

i spend a long time to try to sync my itunes music on my ipod 160 GB Classic, but after waiting so long get a pop up message that itunes stop syncing because of error 46, some times giving me 58, 1469, and many other numbers, please help am using macbook pro

That is precisely what my mid-2010 MacBoook Pro 13 was doing before the drive finally died after an Apple Genius rebooted it a dozen or so times. I have since read about the exact same thing happening to others, including a writer for The Atlantic magazine who had never had an issue with a Mac before. Do a back-up ASAP to make sure you don't lose anything and see about replacing the HDD. It is only about $140 for a new drive. The real issue is if you lose your data, too. So, make sure you do that back-up!

  • Ipod Classic Randomly Loses Tracks/Songs when sync with Itunes

My IPod Classic Randomly loses Songs from playlists. I can sync with iTunes and it will keep say 8 songs out of 10 in a playlist (sometimes all 10 if I’m lucky) but if you re sync it will have 7 or 9 different tracks in the playlist. Its Very annoying as my girlfriend uses it for teaching and songs are always missing.
I have tried updating IPod, re-installing ITunes and restoring IPod
Any Ideas??? Apart from buy a new one but from what I can guess seems like a software issue.
    Thanks

I was having the same problem.
I have an i pod classic 80GB (with the wheel) I think it's 5th generation
I would start a Sync, it would sync 2 or 3 songs then stop or hang up, which did not interfere with any other function, so I would not say it froze.
Once I ended the sync by clicking on the X next to the sync progress bar at the top of the window, I ejected the ipod and then plugged it in again.  Then  I selected my i pod under Devices in the menu on the left-hand side of iTunes.  Clicked on the summary tag.  Clicked on  "Manually manage music and videos" Clicked ok and apply.
When in manual mode, you cn drag songs from  iTunes to the device icon in the sidebar. Once I downloaded the song or songs or album that was causing the problem, I then unselected manual load, and everything else was able to sync normally on automatic mode.

  • IPod randomly pauses

Just got a 30gb iPod video about a week ago, and it's started just randomly pausing while playing songs. Any ideas? And no, I'm not accidently pressing pause!

I got the same thing on a road trip this weekend. It mostly happened just after starting a song and it would often pause twice. I got that look from my wife like "You paid $400 for this?".
