IPod 160GB Classic (late 2009) sync & related problems

My pod went weird while syncing this afternoon.
First the iTunes started freezing & the pc subsequently hanging after adding just a few of the freshly imported songs.
Incidentally, all my songs are imported from legit audio cds or paid downloads.
On every occasion i had to re-boot my pc to start over.
Re-booting with the pod connected does not work either (though i have never tried this before), as the pc stalls after the windows splash screen.
On the 3rd attempt the ipod stopped appearing on itunes altogether!
Then it became invisible to explorer completely.
The "connected" warning & rotating graphics are playing on the pod though!
Finally the pc started freezing everytime the pod was plugged in BUT is waking up on removing the pod.
iTunes on its own is working fine.
On checking the iPod i found that it has come down to only "49" songs (from 5530 orginally) & the memory status is showing 148GB used!!!
Fortunately the library on my HDD is intact & i am still within warranty period
However, after going through some of the threads here, it seems this is a well-known issue.
Will be grateful if anybosy could help me.
BTW, trying to download a fresh iTunes on top of the existing one (whic was updated last week).
In case that helps.
Have tried restore etc., without any effect.

Ok I've got some additional info. If I reload the offending videos into itunes as Movies rather than TV shows then the'll load onto my iPod. Anyone know why my iPod would let me load it with a movie but not let me load it after the exact same video is changes to a tv show? Someone has GOT to know something. Please people please!

May try DIY due to cost
Just wondering if anyone's had this fixed how much it costs
Or if it's another problem before I order parts

I have found the solution for myself for the above.  I use a specific scripting program which is accessed by Control A. To pause it, you need to use Control B. not sure if this would work for any other application but it resolves my dilemma after hours of trying!

  • Select characters/symbols won't display on iPod 160GB Classic since restore

I don't know if anyone has come across this yet or not. My new iPod 160GB Classic crashed after 1 week. Since restoring, I've noticed that certain characters/symbols won't display in artist/title names on my iPod that used to display just fine before the restore (symbols like + and ÿ). The restore function says that it restores it to the 'original factory settings,' but obviously not. I have tried restoring again, but that hasn't solved the problem. I've tried getting the track names from Gracenote (thinking maybe it was a font-specific thing), but that didn't help either. I know it seems petty, but I'm not sure how to solve it. The latest update has been applied to my iPod and I have the latest version of iTunes. Any ideas? I believe the crash was caused by a third party software which has since been removed. I have not experienced any problems since.

Probably, the easiest way to resolve this is to copy the artwork from one song on an album and paste it into every song on that album.
In your iTunes Library, choose an album that has artwork issues; choose one track that has the artwork and copy it. Then:
the slightly longer method is to check each song individually, until you find the one with the missing artwork. Paste (the copy previously made) from one of the other tracks on the album.
a slightly quicker method is to highlight all the songs on that album (make sure it is just that one album) and paste the artwork into the box.
Sync the iPod with your iTunes Library.

My iPod 160GB classic keeps freezing during play.  Have restored it via itunes and now it won't sync completely.   Is there a way of running a defrag or reformatting the ipod?

    Yes, I think so.

Thanks roaminggnome. Can I do that transfer wirelessly or do I have to get a large jump drive to copy and transfer. I presume that I cannot use my iPod right?

  • ITunes 11.1.5 completely wiped ipod 160gb classic

Updated to itunes 11.1.5, unchecked a few songs for my ipod 160gb then hit sync.  The whole ipod has been wiped!!!!
I spent hours with all this music and playlists, now totally gone, so much for new music on the roadtrip tomorrow.  To say I'm hugely annoyed would be an understatement.
To top it all off I've had to restore (think ipod wouldn't recognize?) which has resulted in the error 'the ipod could not be restored because it is busy.

The 160GB iPod classic was released in 2009.  It is still being sold unchanged.  That's a much longer product life than most Apple products.  So, a 160GB iPod classic can be brand new, or almost 5 years old.  A high percentage of them currently in use are approaching the end of their useful life (even if treated carefully), because hard drives eventually wear out and become unreliable over time.  They are fragile and have many moving parts.  It's not a matter of IF they start to have problems, but WHEN they start to have problems, just like hard drives in desktop and laptop computers.
Here's an example of what often happens...  An aging iPod seems to be working fine, but the hard drive is slowly becoming less reliable, with problems like bad sectors.  As long as data updates are small, incremental, and not that frequent, it continues to work fine, with minor issues such as occasional slowness and songs that skip.  The owner wants to give it a "fresh start" by doing a Restore.  The Restore requires a major update to the hard drive's data, and the hard drive errors out, "bricking" the iPod.  Conclusion by the owner...  iTunes broke my iPod.  It can't be a coincidence that the iPod's hard drive "completely died" exactly when I did the Restore.  iTunes is bad.
No, it's not a coincidence, because the hard drive was already unreliable.  It continued to work as long as most of its data stayed mostly static and unchanged.  But when a major update to the hard drive's data took place, such as the Restore, it failed.  The Restore revealed the problem, it did not cause the problem.
There is no problem that is specific to the latest iTunes and 160GB iPod classic.  The problem is that many 160GB iPod classics in use today are aging, and their hard drives are becoming unreliable.  In your case, your iPod's hard drive may be unreliable because of the "hot car for a month."  When you had the iPod set for Manually manage music, and mistakenly changed it to using syncing, that was a major change in the hard drive's data (like doing a Restore).  That may be why iTunes then indicated the iPod was corrupted.  That sequence of events is not related to using iTunes 11.1.5.

  • Blue Screen when I plug my Ipod Touch 8GB(Late 2009)

My problem is when I plug my Ipod touch 8gb to my laptop(Acer Aspire 5632wlmi,intel core 2 duo processor T5200-1,60 GHz-533MHz L2 cache,1GBDDR 2,Up to 384MB NVIDIAGeForce GO7300 TurboCache,System: Microsoft XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3,all required updates are done),the windows system detects problem and windows shuts down to prevent damage to my computer, this error message appears in blue screen with the technical information of :
    *Stop : 0x00000007E(0x0000005,0X00000000,0xF78FD7C8,0XF78FD4C4) .
When the system goes down,I have to shut pc down from the power button and when I switch my laptop on I receive an error stating that "system has recovered from a serious error " which has signature of:
    BCCode : 1000007E BCP1:C000005 BCP2:00000000 BCP3:78FD7C8 BCP4:F78FD4C4 OSVer: 512600 Product:256_1

    C:\DOCUME~1FATIHF~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERffa3.dir00\sysdata.xml
What I have done regarding to try to solve the problem ,but not worked at all:
1-I have uninstalled Itunes ultimate version(iTunes 9.0.3 for Windows XP,Vista or Windows 7) and other Apple related components on my Laptop(apple application support,Apple mobile device support,Apple Software Support,Quicktime etc.)
2- a-I re-installed all components mentioned on step 1 and plugged my Ipod: It works when I plug for first time, then I sync with my audio,art-work folders. Then I unplug my Ipod to listen music and see my Art-work,when I plug my Ipod for 2nd time to my Laptop,it crashes and that same blue screen error occurs.
b- I uninstalled all Apple components and plugged my Ipod to my Laptop,it charges the battery but no blue screen occurs.
3- I reset my Ipod and meanwhile uninstall all Apple components again(exactly like in 1st step) in my laptop, then I re-install all components to my laptop, and follow the same steps as exactly in 2nd step.I plug my Ipod and it works for first time, than I do sync through Itunes again, than I unplug and use my Ipod, when I plug for 2nd time than the same blue screen error appears and laptop crashes.
4- a- I reset my Ipod and Meanwhile uninstalled all Apple components,I re-installed iTunes 8.2.1 for Windows XP,Vista or Windows 7) but the same blue screen occurs.
b- I uninstall iTunes and plugged my Ipod to my laptop,no blue screen occurs.
5- I asked my colleague who has MacBook and plug my Ipod to her MacBook, than open Itunes, but Itunes(iTunes 9.0.3 for Mac OS x) can not see my Ipod as device and I am not able to do anything.
6- I've searched in Apple official websites and Google and many Blogger sites,Fan sites and all other possible technical sites but could not find any solution.
7- I've contacted(phone call) to the Local(Portugal) Support Apple Support Centre and explained all history of the problem clearly. But they could not help me,they advised the same possible solutions which I've already done and they said that they can not do more. And than they gave me a support mail address to contact.([email protected])
8- I've sent an email to [email protected], 2 days later they've answered me with the information that they are phone based support therefore they not provide me support.
Basically I am not able to import or export anything to/from my ipod, anyway all windows is going down.
It is first time I buy Apple product. My friends who have Apple products were generally positive about them, and I was thinking to by a MacBook as well, but after this problem I got doubts and I am not satisfied and happy at all. Since days I am trying to find solutions and find the exact support contacts to get helped with this problem. But could not reach any information. Now I don't have any positive Idea about Apple products or support service.I went to the Techno-Market which I bought the Ipod to change with an Iphone or at least try to have my money back if not possible to swap it with Iphone, but they've told me that it has been more than 15 days and they can not swap it or refund it,even if it was possible they would not refund it because the very sensitive backside of Ipod has some small but visible scratches.
Anyway I can see the difficulty of having Apple product, having support of product and finding the right contacts to communicate is not easy and I would really be very happy if anyone could change this idea of mine with helping me out to use my Ipod with peace and without any other problem.
As you can see,I spent a lot of money to buy it and spent days to find solution to my problem and spent a lot of energy to find right Apple Support contacts to help me with my problem. And I am not able to use my product as I wish.
Please advise me regarding to solve my problem. I hate to deal with courts and other legal ways to take action in those kind of cases. But if not of course it will be my last option to do it so.
I am waiting an answer, please try to answer me as soon as you have an answer for me.
    Thanks In advance
    Best Regards
PS:If you provide me an email address which I can send all print screens and full blue screen error message .txt I'll contact you soon after receiving your contact.

  • 160GB Classic Requires Multiple Syncs

My iPod seems to require multiple syncs, and I haven't the foggiest as to why. Here's the lowdown:
    1) I recently completed a mass re-encoding of my music collection.
    2) I restored my iPod in iTunes (in OS X).
    3) After the restore, it automatically started syncing my library (just shy of 28000 songs).
    4) Syncing completed. I unplugged and went about my day.
    5) After modifying the album art of 2 albums (with about 12 songs each), I plugged my iPod in to ensure it was kept up-to-date.
    6) The iPod (or possibly iTunes) decided to delete 519 of its songs and re-sync them.
This happens without me modifying any of the songs themselves. Sometimes it decides to just "arbitrarily" delete and re-sync ~3000 songs--this is extremely irritating when I'm just looking to add the one album I've added to my library and I have to leave in 5 minutes for work.
I don't get why those extra songs required syncing, and this wasn't the first time this happened. I figured the restore that I did would fix the earlier problem.
I realise that I could just manually manage... but sometimes it's tough keeping track of the modifications when a library is as large as mine.

    Hi Areolex,
I work for Dr Pod, an iPod repair company.
It sounds like your hard drive is dying. Sadly, no software can fix this - the hard drive would require replacing. Are you in the UK? This would usually cost around £100 for a new drive, which my company could do for you. As your iPod is 19 months old, it is out of warranty, and Apple would charge you for any repairs. If you are near an Apple Store, you could always take it and see if a Genius would be willing to repair for you. You need to book an appointment for this.
In short, the iPod needs a new hard drive, which is a hardware issue.
I hope that I have helped. Please get back to me if you need any more assistance,

Turn the Hold switch on , then off again and press-and-hold the Menu and Select (centre) buttons for ten seconds.
"Wiggling it" will not work, unless it's a new form of dance

  • Late 2009 mini video problem

    Late 2009 mini, C2D 2.53, Mavericks, 8G RAM, 1TB SSD
The right hand side one-third of my screen looks as pictured. It's flickering, as if scan lines are moving side-to-side. This is a new problem. The mini has been working with this monitor for a year or so.
A PS3 connected to the same monitor doesn't do this. The mini is connected through the display port, while the PS3 is connected via hdmi-to-DVI.
I tried powering off and unplugging for a while. Didn't work. My Northbridge is running at 79C while I'm running firefox and a backup, which seems high but I don't know what's normal for this machine. The fan is running. The machine was open for memory/SSD installation just a few months ago, and there wasn't a lot of dust then even after four years of operation so I'm inclined to believe it's not a dust buildup now.
If this were a PC I'd change the video card and call it a day.
Does this look like I'll be getting a new mac? This is a very poor time to have a mini die, as the current offering is two years old.

I found my miniDVI-to-DVI adapter and that's working fine. I don't want to buy another display port cable just to find out if that's the problem, since I have the display working now.

  • I just bought a new computer and have tried syncing my iTunes library and iPod 160gb classic to the newly downloaded iTunes on my new computer. It is not working.

Please can somebody help? I followed the instructions on the support page for transferring music from computer to another by downloading the music files then putting them into the iTunes music file on the new computer. Unfortunately, iTunes on the new computer is not recognising the files. I have turned on home sharing to see if I could transfer them that way. It seemed to work then disappeared entirely. I tried connecting my iPod to see if it would recognise it that way. It does recognise my iPod but not the music in it and will not sync with my new computer.
Sorry if this is a boring subject that everyone has had a problem with but I am not able to get a proper answer on the internet. This should be easy not rocket science.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi ldean1,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The best way to get your music onto your new computer is to create a backup of your iTunes libray from your old computer to an external drive.  Follow the steps in this article:

  • HELP: ERROR MSGS WHEN TRY TO SYNC IPOD 160GB CLASSIC

    I have done the following:
Installed the latest version of Itunes
    Restored my IPOD (multiple times)
    Restarted computer
Tried both USB ports on CPU
Made sure I check Sync Music and Apply
    Results:
A few albums are on IPOD
    Get error message above
Thanks in advance for any other suggestions!

Since your song files on the computer are accessible by iTunes, I think the problem is iTunes not seeing the "required folder" on the iPod.  As a test, try shutting down (powering off) the computer and disconnecting all USB devices (including any hubs).  You can leave standard keyboard/mouse connected, if used.  If the computer is a laptop, connect its power adapter so that it's not running on battery power.  Do a Reset on the iPod
Reset your iPod - Apple Support
Start up computer, run iTunes, and connect iPod to a direct USB port by itself.  Try doing a sync.  Any difference?

  • Overdrive Media Player for Ipod Classic late 2009

    Hi
I am unable to transfer from Overdrive Media Player even though I have followed the instructions. It keeps telling me it is unable to connect and that iTunesw v9.02 or newer (I have version 10) is required. I have also enabled manually manage music and videos. When I cancel the request it tells me that no portable device can be found yet it is in iTunes and as a separate drive. Any ideas please
    Mark

Effectively, Apple have told you that your iPod is beyond economic repair. In other words, it will cost more than £102.44 to repair. They know that as soon as they realise that it has been water damaged, so that's why they haven't looked at it (or rather, haven't looked any further than the water indicator).
The problem is that water gets in everywhere, and the electricity from the battery causes short-circuits, which damage components, so it's often impossible to tell which bits work and which bits don't. Even more difficult is when a component works sometimes but not others. When that happens, you have an intermittent problem, that comes and goes without warning. Such an iPod would simply be unreliable and you would find it very irritating.
As soemone who has had to deal with the recent flooding in the UK, I can confirm that the water does terrible damage to electronics. In our case, the incredibly fine silt (muck) that went with the floods is almost impossible to remove from the outside of things, let alone the inside.
I think it's time to buy a new iPod.

  • My iPod classic (late 2009) keeps turning the main volume up all of sudden

I've restored it, but didn't solve the problem. Btw, It's on firmware 2.0.4

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
