IPod 1st Gen Not Recognised or Connecting to anything.

The story so far...
I have a 1st Generation iPod Shuffle 512Mb which was bought 2 years ago in an Apple store in Japan. It has been treated well over the years and is used once or twice a week. There have been no issues with it until my current issue this week.
I decided to give my iPod to a relative and over the weekend plugged in the iPod to the PC (Windows XP - Latest Version) that was to receive the player. The shuffle was recognised and I was challenged by iTunes (Latest Version) that the player was associated with another installation of iTunes. Did I want to transfer to this version of iTunes or did I want to ignore the iPod. I chose to transfer and this is where things came off the rails! The iTunes application closed down in an uncontrolled manner and after a reboot of the machine was in capable of recognising the shuffle.
I have followed the 5 R's to the letter.
I have tried to restore from iTunes on Windows XP
I have tried to restore from iTunes on Mac OS
I have downloaded and run the Reset Utilities provided on the Apple website.
I have reset from Windows XP (on two different machines)
I have reset from Windows XP (having uninstalled iTunes)
I have reset from Mac OS 10.4.9 - iBook G4
I have reset from Mac OS 10.4.9 - Powerbook G4
The utilities see the shuffle and recognise that it is in Restore mode. However the reset fails with a Error Retrieving Information from your iPod message.
I have read the discussion threads where the advice is to format the iPod however in my case the although I get a mapped drive with a letter (e.g. E:) when I try to access it I get a pop up window asking me to insert a disk..
I am currently reseting from Windows 2K on a machine that has never had iTunes installed onto it. It has recognised the device.. and is attempting to install the drivers... but I have a sneaking suspicion that it has stalled midway through-- I decided to let the install process keep running while I'm at work just to make sure that it just isn't taking it's own time.
Has anyone---
1. Got the same issue?
2. Got any resolutions that don't involve going to the Apple store and buying a new one?
(Sorry for the length of the posting but I have done quite a lot of stuff and I need to give you the whole picture).

There is no conflict either. On one of the machines there were no other installed devices.. and on all other machines the interaction with USB seems fine on both Mac and Windows platforms.
I have even followed the instructions to re-register the iTunes .dll files with the apple provided bat file. All to no avail.
What is interesting is that the device is not identified during the restore process with the name that appears on the apple website but instead it is identified as a recovery device player class device.
I tried the remapping of the driver letter. Bascially the change of letter works fine but there is no storage associated with the letter. So the device is mounted but there is no capacity.

You've pretty much exhausted everything so it is time to get it serviced. Is it in warranty?

  • IPod fifth gen. not charging neither connecting to computer

Hi, I have an iPod 5th generation 30gb and it isn't recognized by my computer.
    It isn't charged.

I am having the exact same problem. I have a dell Latitude D510 running XP pro. Please help. My daughter will be traveling to perform in the Rose Bowl Parade this year and it has become at must fix! All I have is a blank screen (dark) as though it is off. I just replaced the battery, thinking that was the problem. That did not change anything.

  • IPod shuffle (1st gen) not recognised

    Right, here is my problem:
When i connect my ipod to my computer (or any other) i get an error warning saying that the "usb device is not recognized....". It doesn't appear in 'My Computer' at all, and i have already tried the ipod shuffle reset utility for windows, but because it is not found at all on the computer, the reset utility cannot find it either!
Now where this seems to differ from previous problems that people have mentioned is that my ipod will still play the music that i presently have on it with no problems and will charge with no problems either (its fully charged).
At the time this problem started, i was using the most up to date version of software for it and for itunes.
Any help would be so greatly appreciated

This is going to sound hokey, like one of those ‘cheat codes’ where you move your joystick right, right, left, up, down, right, right and then hit the “A” button. Desperate times calls for desperate measures. Don’t know if this is going to work for you but no harm in trying.
    1. Open the latest version of Itunes.
    2. Turn on your Ipod Shuffle quickly (you should see the green led light briefly) and plug it right away into the USB port.
    3. Then turn off your Ipod almost just as quickly.
Hopefully, the Ipod should blink orange continuously and Itunes will say that the Ipod is corrupted. “Do you wish to reset it to the original factory settings?”
    D*#n right.
    4. This will delete everything on your Ipod, but more importantly, after this, the Ipod starts charging with a constant orange light.
    5. Then start transferring your music back onto the Ipod.
I’ve played around looking to fix this frickin’ problem forever…would’ve been better buying a 2nd generation Shuffle for $79, but then I see the problems on this forum with it as well. The only good to come out of this was that I no longer feel alone with this problem.
Apple says to download the latest Itunes and do the 5 R’s, blah, blah, blah. I have a frickin’ Shuffle – I just want to listen to it when I ride my bike for 3+ hours, recharge it via a USB, and do it again. I don’t want to download a 50MB application (Itunes) that supports video and does all this other crap, when it was what, originally a 30+ meg. app? Yea, I know there are other Ipods out there - how about a simple Itunes for the simpler applications?
And then doing the 5 R’s mostly involve a fully charged Ipod – how often does that happen? Frickin’ Apple. They just don’t understand. 90 days for support? Based on the forum, some of them do conk out within 90 days of purchase, but a majority will occur after the 90 days. I’ve charged mine for less than 50 cycles, and now, only my “Random” setting will play. I’m not even going to bother looking for a fix for that problem. After my Shuffle dies for good, I’ll get another non-Apple mp3 player that won’t give me hassles.
If the above solution works, great. If it doesn’t, sorry – I tried. I can tell you about how the Ipod will have a momentary charge (orange light) when plugged in and you turn your computer on for the first time (but not when ‘Restarting’) and other nuances from my many experiments, but the above is the only thing I was able to do to get it to work. The whole purpose of the above ‘solution’ is to try to help Itunes communicate with your otherwise dead Ipod (red battery status indicator). One without any lights at all is probably truly dead. Good luck.

  • Ipod 1st Gen Not Connecting to the computer and not being recognized

Hi my friend is having some issues with her ipod first generation it is not being recognized by the computer when she plugs it in and when she opens itunes it does not show up. the only thing she can do is charge her ipod from the computer, if anyone can help that would be great thanks!!

Could be any number of reasons.  One of them just may be your refusal to update iTunes.  Just because others are having issues does not mean you'll have them!

  • Ipod 1st gen not working after update

Doing a firmware update via itunes. I couldn't restore my ipod after it had finished doing the update.
The error number I got was 6. And then my iPod just didn't turn on for ages, and now it finally has and won't turn off and is stuck on a the backlit blank black background.
I went into an apple store and the man at the genius bar said because it was itunes, Apple has nada to do with it(?), and was just really unhelpful in general.
The ipod I have is a Touch 1st generation 16GB.
Would appreciate any help or advice. Thanks.

It is only available for late 2006 model iPods. The Fifth Generation iPod (Late 2006) serial number's last three digits will be one of the following: V9K, V9P, V9M, V9R, V9L, V9N, V9Q, V9S, WU9, WUA, WUB, WUC, and X3N.
If yours is an older model, it doesn't have it, nor is it available via a software update.

  • Why aren't there anymore updates for the ipod 1st gen?

Why aren't there anymore updates for the ipod 1st gen? I can barely do anything on it now and it would be a waste . its only 4.2.1 just make it to ios 5

Because the hardware will not support a higher iOS.

  • IPod 1st Gen Connection?

So recently I got a iPod 1st Gen (w/ Scroll Wheel) thats 5GB. And I also got a Firewire Card for my PC. My iPod is already Windows Formatted. Anyway I'm trying to sync music to it on my PC. But its not getting recognized in Windows Explorer (not on any drive in My Computer). Whenever I connect it, it says "Ok to Disconnect" with the check and it recharges. It won't show up on my computer. Can anyone help? And yes I've already read this article entitled "iPod missing in "My Computer" or in iTunes for Windows."

seems it could be problem with the firewire card's driver.

It doesn't quite work that way. Transfer your music from the old computer to the new one. Then, sync the iPod.

My ipod 5th gen says it is connected to the internet and i can go on apps that require an internet connection but whe i try to use the weather or another app that uses your current location it cant find me???

If you open the Maps app where does that say you are located?
For location the iPod uses the location of nearby routers that are in Apple's database of routers and their location. Thus it appears that Apple's database is incorrect. You do not have to be connected to the router, just within range.
Apple periodically updates their database based on information they obtain from iPhones, The iPhone has to have turned on the option to send info to Apple. no one has found another way to get the location of a router added/corrected.
You can confirm that by going to well-know place with wifi like Starbucks or McDonalds

  • My Ipod Touch is not recognised in itunes or my computer but still charges, Please help

My Ipod Touch is not recognised in itunes or my computer but still charges when connected via USB Please help

Did plugging it into another USB port do any good? Make sure it is a USB port on the back of your PC and not via a USB hub or one on the front as they sometimes do not output enough power for the iPod to properly communicate with your PC.
Do you have another 30 pin dock connector cable around you use to try and rule out a faulty cable?
Did you try a hard reset of the device with it still connected to your PC?  To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
With the article above were you able to verify that the Apple Mobile Device Service was installing and running on your system?
Lastly, try plugging it into a different PC to see if it is recognized there.  It can help narrow down whether it is an issue with the iPod or with your PC.
