Ipod 1st gen wont show up in itunes 4.0

I recently upgraded my old imac g4 to 10.3.9. Now, my old shuffle will not show up in itunes 4.0. It mounts itself to the desktop, but wont show up? Any quick fixes out there?
Thanks,
MB

Went through something similar on our daughter's old iMac G3. Solution there was to install the most advanced version of iTunes that we could which, I think, was 7.0.something. Her Nano then started playing properly.

  • My ipod (5th gen) wont show up in itunes and it wont let me in my ipod saying i have to connect to itunes what do i do?

So today i went to update my ipod, then it goes to this black screen the shows that i need to plug it into itunes. when i go to do so itunes doesnt pick it up and i cant get off this screen that says to plug it into itunes. i dont care if i dont get the update i just want to be able to use my ipod. by the way i cant turn it off. Help please.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • 1st gen iPhone showing up in iTunes as blank window

So, I have a friend who has a 1st gen iPhone...  iTunes said to her "there's a new version of iOS available, would you like to download it and upgrade?"...  She was feeling particularly good about life and decided, yes!  I will upgrade!
The download happened, and the install happened, and her phone became a dead brick.  She called 1-800-my-apple, and they told her "1st gen iPhones can't handle the latest OS, there's nothing that can be done and you have to go buy a new phone".
Gee...  You'd think Apple engineers might have their OS update installers do a device version check to make sure it can actually support the OS it's asking you to install..  Maybe that's just too much to ask for?  I don't know--- Anyway, this was really disturbing for me to hear as I couldn't imagine Apple doing something so irresponsible and short-sighted to their users.  I know someone here is going to reply to this with "dude it's a first gen iphone.. get a new phone", but that's not the point.  The point is, Apple should know what their devices can and can't handle and not just screw over people who happen to not be in the financial position to upgrade their hardware.
Anyway, so, I happened to have a 1st gen iPhone that I was not doing anything with, so I offered to send it to her so she could have a working phone.  I sent her instructions on how to swap her sim card, and so she did that.. and reported to me that after plugging in the phone her itunes shows this:
No options to restore her previous iPhone backups.. nothing..  I tried googling around for this, but found very little information so I thought I'd ask here.  Does anyone know why her iTunes is showing a blank window?  She installed the latest version (10.5 build 141)...  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm in the same boat.  My mother uses my old 1st Gen iPhone as an ipod, and it suddenly stopped syncing music, so I did a restore, and now it just gives me the connect to iTunes screen, but when I do I get the same blank iPhone screen inside itunes.

  • IPod touch 4th gen wont show up in iTunes, but my old iPod nano does.

So I've looked up this issue on multiple forums and here, but it seems like everyone is having a simmilar issue, but not the same. I've gone through just about everything here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1369 and I've tried all the trouble shooting and everything. I thought that maybe it was an issue with my cheap USB but I recently purchased an apple brand one and it still doesn't work. My iPod doesn't even show up as an iPod in the connected devices on my computer, but it shows up as a camera or something. I have a Toshiba Leading Innovation laptop with Windows 8, and a 4th generation iPod touch. My older iPod nano connects to iTunes just fine. I'm thinking it's an issue with my iPod touch but I have absolutely no clue how to fix this. Can anyone help?

The Nano uses different drivers than iOS devices like the iPod touch

  • Ipod keeps restarting/ wont show up in itunes or my computer...

Recently my ipod has been freezing after listening to it for about 20-30 minutes, i would reset it and it would remain frozen after the reboot until the battery died. Now it wont even take a charge, it keeps showing the apple symbol then the unhappy ipod face over and over until i disconnect it from the charge source. I took it to the apple store nearby and they gave me directions to reset my ipod, the problem is that my computer as well as itunes doesn't even recognize that my ipod is even hooked into the usb port. Any help or suggestions??
    Thank you
ipod 4th gen with click wheel   Windows XP

I am having the same problem with my ipod. I managed to get the ipod into disk mode and then managed to get windows to recognize it and restore it, but after the restore process completed it just went back to doing the exact same thing again so I dont think that works. I am still trying to figure things out and I really dont want to pay over $300 to send it to apple for repairs when I can get a brand new 20GB mp3 player for the same price. I would like to hear any suggestions too.

  • IPod Classic 80Gb, wont show up in iTunes 8, but does in Finder

Just plugged my iPod classic 80Gb in and it wont show in iTunes 8, although it shows up in Finder
Tried a iPod reset. restarted my Mac but no good.
Come on man I need to do a sync....

    I have a similar problem.
This morning, all music was gone from my iPod, just like that. I had been having troubles with playing a couple of songs last night if that's connected. Anyway, I connect it to my Macbook. I try to reset it through iTunes and that was done, I pressed eject and ejected it when it said OK to disconnect -- although when I did so it said it wasn't ejected properly. Now when I connect it appears in Finder as a device (like that thingy that appears when you install stuff, a white thing) but it doesn't in iTunes. In fact, as soon as I plug it in iTunes freezes and I can't open it or do anything in there, the marker just shows that it's loading.
    What do I do?

  • Old iPod 3rd gen not showing up in iTunes

Hi, I realize this may be a futile effort but I thought I would give it a try.
I have an old ipod, 3rd gen 15GB that still works fine, stores a lot of music and plays fine. I would like to update and restore it. I have the old computer I used it with, an iBook G4 OSX 10.4.11 running iTunes 8.2.1, the most updated it can get for this computer I think.
Im just wondering how I can restore the ipod and put mp3s on it. It doesnt show up in itunes but appears to be charging when I plug it in with the old firewire cable. its working ok to the best of my knowledge and I would like to do a hard reset or something but I cant figure out how. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You are out of luck. The 1G can only go to iOS 3.1.3. Its hardware does not support a higher iOS.
